Welcome to all Anticipating PIR 10/7/2011!!

This group is for those with loved ones who had PIR on 10/07/2011. (PIR is short for Pass-in-Review and just means graduate from Boot Camp.)

It was an amazing ceremony, an amazing opportunity to see our Sailors perform and participate as an entire group, amazing to hear that wonderful Liberty call and completely overwhelming to get those long awaited hugs.

It is our desire that this Group will provide the information, encouragement, and support you need while your loved one continues their Navy Journey. We are hoping you will continue to come back and update everyone on that journey and continue to seek support and encouragement from friends you have already made here.

Enjoy your time here and feel free to Comment and join in the Discussions. Be sure to check out the information in the "Pages" section to the right. This is information that will be of interest to all Members.  (You will need to click on "View All" to see all of them.)

Please review the Community Guidelines and keep OPSEC in mind when you post. If you would not want an enemy to know something, then do not post it here because this is NOT a secure site and the enemy lurks. Please do not post your Sailor's last name and NEVER his/her full name. Also do not use your full name, especially if your last name is the same as your Sailor's. If your Sailor provides specific information about events that will occur, please keep that to yourself and do not post the day/time on here since this information may be sensitive and is not to be shared.

Can anyone offer some clarification, please?  How important is the +4 portion of the RTC zip code?  There is a discrepancy between what was on my SR's envelope and the form letter.  Since we won't be getting another letter for awhile, what's the best way to give this portion of info to the relatives?

Totally agree, and all need to remember how easy it is to get information on the internet.  Please protect your SRs/sailors.  And regarding some of the comments that have been deleted - good for the group creator!  We should be as positive as we possibly can - if an RDC is giving one of our kids a hard time, well, so be it!  1.  the probably deserve it - just like when we yelled at them.  2.  They made the decision to go to boot camp, not us so I expect my son to pony up and take it like the man I know is inside of him. and 3.  the RDC's are working hard to get our SRs where they need to be in order to deal with difficult situations in the future.  This is not a game, but a job.  These RDCs are serving our country too, in a very important way.  Let's support them.

I totally agree with diannep and lemonelephant.  When I first joined N4M's my sailor was going into a job with a low level security clearance, so I guess I never thought that I was jeopardizing him.  I was putting his first name out there in the discussions left and right.  I realized later on that this was not a good idea and I decided to go back and delete all those responses (believe me, this was not an easy chore, since I can be quite chatty).  It's a good thing that I did it too because my sailor was re-classed recently and is now in a top secret rate.  Whew!  Just leaving everything pretty generic is the best plan.  Better to be safe than sorry later.

We not only want to remain anonymous while they are at the RTC, but while they are in the Fleet as well, especially if they have any kind of security clearance.
Comment by diannep on August 23, 2011 at 11:03am

Well, whenever the story happened...IF it did...the moral of the story is that we don't want to bring attention to the SRs.  And we like for all to remain anonymous from their SRs while in bc.  Makes their lives so much easier!

We are all very proud of our SRs/sailors and want to talk about them...but we must be careful for their security and well-being in what we say in case there is a connection...This includes NOT posting on here all that your SR tells you in a phone call or letter...some ladies in past groups have gotten very detailed with this...even expressing the SR's feelings on whether he/she liked something/someone or not.  One lady even gave the name of the RDC that her hubby didn't like...and another lady commented that she needed to deliver this RDC a swift "kick" at PIR!  OOOPS!  Not a good thing.  Group creator had to get rid of those posts immediately...the ones who posted them were quite angry about that...sigh....they had no clue what could have happened to both of their SRs and the entire division had the RDCs read them.

Private messaging is a much better way to communicate details to one of your friends (or more).

momofbp and everyone, it is never too soon to start thinking about and practicing OPSEC. Some people have enough info on here that with just a few clicks of the mouse, anyone can find where they live (the actual street address) and the names of some or all of the members of their household (including their SR). You don't have to give the actual city where you live in your N4M Profile, you can post the zip code of a nearby city and if others ask where you live, you can say, "I live in the XXXX area." This is true, but gives less information than if you said which city you live in. Go to the Page What is OPSEC? and be sure to read through the information in the links. Killing With Keyboards is especially enlightening.

Since the original post on RDC's reading N4M comments was posted by fireteamleaderwife, perhaps she would like to chime in and tell when this happened.  This did happen in the spring of 2008, the rumor keeps popping up every now and then, so I don't know if it is left over from back then or is occurring again.

Thats a relief. I changed my pic and took his name out of my profile name.

momofbp:  We N4M veterans heard this story within the past year, so I'm assuming it was recent, but don't know. No, it wasn't this group.

Good morning everyone!

Ladies, I know that you still have time for this, but don't forget about Priceline.com if you have to book a rental car for PIR.  I am going to see my sailor in Pensacola, but we are flying into Panama City and driving to Pensacola.  I have been looking at rental car prices for a couple of weeks and didn't see anything less than $40 for the type of car that I wanted to rent.  Ugh!  Tonight, I thought, oh what the heck, I'll try Priceline.    I stated that I wanted to pay $20 a day.  I got a response back right away that they accepted that!.  Woohoo, that saved me quite a bit of money over the course of 5 days.  :)
