Did you notice the countdown clock above.......we are now in our teens.........yippie!
I totally agree with what Lala said about Facebook privacy. Accounts are hacked into often there. The last names worry me too.
Thanks for all the helpful hints!!
Good morning everyone, I hope you all have a wonderful fun-filled Saturday. We are having a yardsale today so I will be back later this afternoon. I would love to Sell out so I can come back sooner lol.
To be honest i don't think facebook groups are really more secure than this group. Some of them are allowed to post first and last names on open public pages. That doesn't seem very secure to me at all. Everyone should just be careful no matter where they are. The most important thing is to never ever discuss Ship Movement on a website or social media page. You never know who is on the group page even if it is set to private. Most of the time people ask to join and they are accepted. Who knows if the really have a son or daughter at bootcamp. That would be easy to fake. So the best practice is to not say anything that you could not plaster on a billboard for the world to see.
How to change your Profile Page settings:
How to change your Privacy Settings, Username, Picture and URL
You can make your Profile Page (My Page - third tab over at the very top under the N4M banner) viewable only to your friends. There are other privacy settings too.
Click "Settings". “Setttings” is over to the far right underneath your username where you sign out of N4M's.
It will take you to your Profile page where you can change your picture, username, “about me” comments etc.
To the left on your Profile Page is a list.
Click Privacy. It will take you to your “Privacy Settings” Page.
Under “Visibility” (the very top of the list) the first item is:
My profile page and friends can be viewed by...
O Anyone
O Members
O Just My Friends
Choose "Just My Friends"…then go ahead, read through and change the rest your settings to how you would like them.
You can also change your Profile Picture, username, URL (web address...this fills with whatever name you used to originally sign up with N4M's. Some use their real name... change their username...but not their URL and so it is still visible), About me info etc., on the first page that popped up when you clicked "Settings".
Since last names of Recruits/Sailors are not allowed on the N4M website...it's good to change it there as well.
On "Friending"...
When you get a request and the person does not "look" familiar...or you have never seen their Username before...click on their username and go to their Profile page and see if they are active on the site etc. If their page it private...then you could enter their username into the N4M's search engine and any posts they have made will come up so that may spark "who" they are.
Usually the person sending a Friend Request adds dialogue to the request. It is limited to 200 characters and disappears when you accept their request. Here is what I do so as not to lose it just in case it was an important question.
I highlight the dialogue,Copy it by right clicking and choosing "Copy", accept the friend request, then click (this is a left click and so I don't lose the Copy) their username to go to their page. When there I left click "Send a Message" underneath their profile pic. You will get a messaging box. I then right click within it (sometimes it takes a couple of right clicks) and "Paste" it in. Now I have it so I can answer it!
No, it should not be deleted. We have some very competent veteran moms on our 800 Division Discussions and they have instructed the new moms early on on what best to do about posting...also about FB groups and their observations on what they have seen over there ...just like you said mom of 11. You are fine...and so were your postings...it was generic with out specific details...but let others know that you have heard from your SR and that "all is well".
SPECOPS Members - Just follow what the more experienced moms have advised you about here as well as any other groups you are on. Keep your profile pic anonymous, no names, non-detail filled posts. I would also make your Profile pages viewable only to your friends. I'll post how to do that shortly.
NOTHING is ever totally secure. We outline the site rules and give you cautions to help you out...That is our goal.
