Yay Leftwayleft!!!! How exciting. I am so happy you got a letter. What a great feeling that must have been :) Hopefully things should get a little easier for us, now that we are starting to have communication with our SRs.
Graduation book? That is new to me! Are you referring to The Keel, BJAS? If so, you all make sure that your SRs order Pkg A for photos...because if they do, The Keel is thrown in for free...but only if your SR orders Pkg A (not if you do when you get up to PIR...you would have to pay extra for The Keel). My son didn't order Pkg A when he was there. I called a week after PIR to order The Keel, and they told me it was too late. It apparently has to be ordered by PIR day as they only order a certain number to be printed.
"Extras" for PIR should get in. This is a larger PIR group, but even one that had 14 divisions had all extras get in. They may have to wait in the Visitors Center until others on the lists are seated, but sometimes they don't even have to do this. I would advise those with "extras" to be early arrivals at RTC.
BJAS57: So glad that you finally found the site. Was your 1st sailor in prior to 2008? Because the site was started by the Navy in March 2008. I had a friend whose son was in from 2004-2008....she said she sure wished this site was around when he was first in.
sharibari: Be sure to check out any "fees" that they have should you have to change dates, cancel, etc. I know that in the past, some who had booked hotel rooms through sites like that still had to pay even when they weren't going to be able to go. Just remember, there is always a chance that your SR's PIR date could change...they can get setback(asmoed) for different reasons. So that is why we always suggest Southwest Airlines (no change fee, 2 bags ship for free) if you can use that airlines.
I remember one lady desperately trying to "sell" her hotel room to someone on this site when she had booked with a site like Orbitz!
People booking hotels directly pay nothing upfront and can cancel usually up to the day of arrival with no penalty.
Has anyone ever bought airline tickets on Orbitz.com? They are offering round trip from Pensacola to Chicago for $220.00 and it just seems too good to be true! Thanks in advance for any input!
BJA57 - accepted your friend request
diannep- I didn't know about this site until our son had been in the Navy for almost 4 years! It is an invaluable tool, and I have friends from all over the country who kept my spirits up when he was deployed. Now I am finding it a wealth of info as another son goes through boot camp. How easily all this is forgotten as they venture on to their next adventure.
Thanks Julie. I hope we all get in. I know my son was going to ask around, I will remind him just to be sure!
I just read a post from someone who has a PIR of 06/22 and she just got her first letter from her SR. So maybe this time next week it will be our turn for a letter! :D
