1stlove:  I wouldn't wait on the hotel...if you need a larger suite especially.  Those go pretty quickly up there. But if you just need a room, you probably can wait if you wait.  You usually get a PIR discount at the hotels...or can use AAA if you have that.  They sometimes "sell out" of the Navy rate though. They usually have liberal cancellation policies.  Like up until a day before PIR.

If you book Southwest Airlines, you won't pay a change fee (if needed) and your first 2 checked bags go for free.  They fly into Milwaukee and Chicago Midway.  Milwaukee may be cheaper and easy to get to GL...no traffic.

1stlove there pir date can change at any time up until they do battlestation and they normally do that sometime the week of PIR.
Comment by 1stlove (02/946) on August 15, 2011 at 3:02pm

ok so. we need to wait at least till half way point to book flights correct...(recommeneded)?  Hotel should I wait for that as well? only ask because if you book plane, hotel and car you can get discount? but if hotel occupancy is an issue then should we reserve room now? we are starting weel three tomorrow. we are almost at half way mark.........

does any of our veterans have any insite on when is safe time frame that our sr PIR date will not be changed or is it all the way up to the week of PIR?

does writing start yesterday or next sunday for them?

by the way I am much better today thank you to everyone for prayers and encouragement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw that this site was supported by our local Navy offices of course can you imagine how many phone calls they are NOT having to take because of all the help we get from here..

Dianne, Lol, I hope not too.  ;)   I have recuperating well from the grandkids' visit.  My youngest daughter flew back to New Mexico for college, this morning, so I'm trying to distract myself from missing her now.  This site is a great way to do that.  :)

Betsy:  Hopefully I won't "need" to be changed!  :-)

Welcome back, Betsy!  Did you survive the weekend with your grandkids?  Hope you got a good night of rest last night!  :-)

desireernavygf:  He will just have to open the envelope in front of the RDCs but you are allowed to send paper/stamps/envelopes.  If you think he would not want the "extra attention," you can send a couple of extra sheets of paper/envelope in each of your letters...but if you make these too thick, they have to open them too.  But he is allowed to have these. My son wrote home on Navy stationery that was provided there...although I think sometimes they "run out."

aggiemom:  It is funny to see what the SRs return in their "box."  They are getting so many instructions and so much yelling at once, that most won't take a chance.  They just throw everything in there!

They are allowed to keep their wallets, so we try to let people know in the DEP groups before they leave that they should have the phone card in there...and they can have a list of phone numbers/addresses in there also, although they can keep a small address book and a small Bible.

Question ladies I want to send my sr some more envelops and stamps but I would have t put that in a big envelop will they give this to him or will they take it away.I don't want to get him in trouble by sending him a big envelop??
Comment by aggiemom (Corpsman A School) on August 15, 2011 at 10:30am
Thanks Betsy!!!  My fear is that he won't call because he doesn't have a calling card and I'm going to miss out.  That would make me very sad.  :-(

aggiemom, Yes, he should get the calling card.  The RDC's may have him open the envelope in front of them (but I even doubt that), but he will be able to have the calling card.  He could buy stamps at the NEX, but I would also send him the stamps with the calling card.

Another question!!!  I know - what's new right?  I finally went through my son's bag that he handed me before he left and I found the calling card that we bought for him that he didn't put in his wallet.  Big surprise!  If I mail it to him will he get it?  I heard that they only give them the letters and nothing that you send with them?  Also, since he didn't take the calling card - he didn't take the stamps I sent with him either.  Does he need stamps?  I really want to get a letter or call from him!
