iwagot, you have to go to the Airlines to get a pass. Have your Sailor call you when he gets to the Airport. Your Sailor will have to come to the desk with you to get your pass. There is always someone at the airport that will let your son call you. When you see your son after the PIR ceremony. She will give you all the details.
When you go to the Airport to see her off. Bring only your wallet and cell phone/camera. You might have to go through security.
Micaela, I have never heard such a thing. Keep in mind that the RDC job is to train recruits to be good Sailors. They don't handle anything outside of RTC.
You still will probably get to see your Sailor at the airport. Just leave your plans open just in case. :)
Micaela: That is what he is being told right now. Once he leaves RTC, he is no longer under their jurisdiction anymore. Again, unless he is on a charter plane, you can see him. Just wait and see about it when you get up there. We even contacted RTC once when we were told that NO families could meet at the airport with their new sailors. It was right after the Navy Seal tragedy and we thought it was extra security. RTC told us there was no extra security in place so it was fine. So all went and it was fine. I know for a fact that you can meet up with them at the USO--- and get a gate pass (with your sailor with you) to wait at the gate with them...again, if on a commercial flight.
Here is the Midway USO phone number. Call them and ask them:
773-838-0600
Remember, they do this every single week of the year...well, almost. They can tell you.
Mattsmom, don't worry about anything now or try to plan anything. When you see your Sailor at PIR he will be able to tell you which airport he is flying out of. Sailors don't know what is going on themselves until PIR or after the ceremony. IF they are Saturday-Sunday departures, they will be briefed either before or after PIR.
Most Sailors leave via Chicago O'Hare or Midway. It will all work out:)
Diannep: my sailor told me same thing. I cannot meet him at airport. He is flying out of midway! he said he is group leader so he cannot even wait for me to get past security. I am freaking out I wanted to give him his phone!!!
I am so excited and happy for you and your Sailors. I love reading all of your comments.
