Hey Sandy...those loose threads are called Irish Penannts. Big no + no. Learned about them from Hubby. He has me take a lighter or nail clipper to them!

Have a great PIR and week end with your Sailors. I am so happy for you.

diannep, I didn't recognize my own kid either.

On the subject of drinking. A Chief who is frequents this site told me that during PIR weekend,  she and her family were eating at The Olive Garden near GL. She was wearing her Civi clothes. Across the isle was a new Sailor eating dinner with his family. She listened as a man sitting with the Sailor kept trying to get him to take a drink of beer. He kept saying things like, 'oh come on, Just one sip. You deserve it."  The Sailor kept refusing politely. Chief walked over to the their table and introduced herself. She congratulated the Sailor and told him that she was very proud of him for not taking that drink.

Chief says Sailors can be seen from a mile away. Officers can recognize them because of the way they look and carry themselves.  When you visit with your Sailor this week end. You'll know what I mean.

I don't know what they did to my son in boot. During PIR weekend my son kept checking for loose threads on his uniform.

FINAL SUGGESTIONS FOR PIR:

Have fun at MeetNGreet, but get to bed early!  Yes, you may have sporadic sleep since you will be so excited, but you need to be up EARLY.  I recommend that those on the shuttles be on the 6:30 one if possible.  Those driving, be in that car line by 6 or a little after.  Gates open at 6:30...

Although PIR doesn't actually start until 9 a.m., the traffic gets very heavy the later you wait.  Then you will have limited choice of seating in your division area.  And no time to check out camera settings before it starts (my piks came out dark because I didn't do this)!  So try and get there early if at all possible!

Also, very important...remember...NO PHOTOS ALLOWED TO BE TAKEN OUTSIDE OF THE DRILL HALL ON THE BASE.  They will take your camera and delete.  Only allowed inside the drill hall.

Also, you only have about 10 minutes after liberty is called to get your piks.  They will clear the hall after that.  So get your photos quickly!

Your sailor will have to return to his/her ship right after PIR...most likely...plan a place to meet up with them on the base when they return.  You will be amazed at how many look alike in their uniforms!  :-)  When waiting for my son, I kept saying:  There he is...nope...oh, there he is....nope....

Ridiculous!  I had no idea he would be gone that long.  Of course, he said he was busy saying goodbye to many he wouldn't see again...

Also, your sailors will be well-advised of the liberty rules....and the consequences if they violate them.  There will be superiors in plain clothes lurking around the area....they will be watching!  So Navy protocol is in order.  Please do not encourage your sailor to take a celebratory drink...because it is forbidden!  They want OUT of bootcamp...and are told that they may be retained and even setback if they violate the rules.  So please follow your sailor's lead!  Being back from liberty "on time" means...in Navy terms...they're LATE!  So when they ask that you have them back 30 minutes early, believe them.  They have a pretty long walk to their ships, even if you drive onto the base.  So again...follow their leads!

Remember, gate pass is needed if you drive onto base...not needed if you take a shuttle (but I had one in my purse just in case!)

Have fun!
