My sailor contacted me by Facebook yesterday to let me know he had arrived safely. He was waiting for the plane to take him to the ship. He was tired. Only got about 4 hours sleep since 4:00 am Tuesday morning. Hopefully they let him sleep when he got there. Was so glad he was able to contact me.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Dyon, Kathyf, Navymomkathy, thank you all so much.  Your words have helped me regain a "grip."  In retrospect I guess I was searching for what "normal" is in this situation.  My sailor is the youngest of my 3 boys and the other 2 did not serve in the military so I'm a rookie military mom.  I appreciate your reassurances.

Kathyf, I love the FB page and the pics.  They are SO good about posting frequently.  No pics of newbies like my boy yet.  I think they should photograph all of them as they arrive on board holding a "Hi Mom" sign.  LOL

Anyone have suggestions for dos and dont's for things to send in packages?

Thank you Kathyf. This one is my baby too. My oldest son was in the Air Force National Guard and was deployed to Kuwait & Afghanistan, so I have been through this before but it is still hard. I did not have this support system when he went. I know what you mean about people not understanding what we are going through and how hard it is. I don't think my husband even gets it. He means well but just keeps saying, he will be alright.

That is awesome that both your son and daughter are serving. Be sure to thank them for serving.

I am going to check out the FB page. I feel like I have made new friends already. Cant begin to Thank all of you for all your kind words and advice.

Thank you Dyon. My sailor is on his way. The airlines gave me a gate pass so I was able to sit with him umtil he boarded. A few tears for me at the airport but the waterworks happened after I got back and called my mom. Just keeping busy today and treating myself to a massage this afternoon. I dont know what I would do without the support here. Someday us newbies will be the experts helpimg others!

HELLO DavesMom and Navymomkathy:

International cell phones/satellite phones:  Here is a good and informative site about international cell phones and SIM cards - http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/cell-phone-europe.htm

Satellite phones are VERY expensive - $500 - $1600 each.

Once you hear from your son ~ have him check with his superior for some advice or which office on board that could give him some up-to-date advice.

My son uses an international SIM card in his U.S. cell phone.

DavesMom:  It is NOT unusual to not hear from our children for several weeks at a time, depending on what's going on aboard the ship.  Do you have his email address???  Sometimes writing our kids is a good way to calm our nerves!!  The sailors have access to the ship's computer lab - I believe there is more than just one lab (or bank) of computers available to them.  BUT, we also must realize that there are over 4,000 sailors aboard, not to mention the Marines....so getting to use one in their spare time CAN be a strategic exercise in itself!  My son does have his own laptop - so we don't have to wait for him to have 'shared' time on the ship's computers.  Also, you will want to wait and get his specific mailing address from him.  I TOTALLY understand the impatient waiting game!!!    Also know how it is with being in control of the waterworks one moment.....then having the flood come the next!

Navymomkathy:  YES, you will learn to take GREAT comfort in the "no news is good news" mindset!!

Well, I must go for now and work on some of my class assignments - I've gone back to college and am swimming in homework!!

Take care ladies!!!!  Love to you and to your sailors!!

DavesMom, I am sure your son is just fine. They are probably keeping him busy. But I know what you mean about just wanting to know he is there. I never got the "I am here" call when he got to boot camp and all kinds of crazy things went through my head. But I go with the "no news is good news".

Navymomkathy, also I'll be thinking of you and your sailor tomorrow.  I did ok til I told mine that I was really excited for him and feeling upbeat.  He looked away and looked back 10 sec. later and tears were rolling down my cheeks.  It's such a torn feeling.  We ARE excited for them and ... boo hoo about the goodbye.  Good luck and pls thank him for his service.

Navymomkathy, Amen!  I wouldn't have made it through bc without the Navy family on N4Ms and the fb page.  No, he didn't bring his own laptop.  We had no idea when or how we would be able to be in touch again, but after 1 week it's getting harder to be patient.  All I need is the "I'm here" call again.  :)  Would be comforting to know that he successfully attached to the ship.  Otherwise where would he be?  I'm wrestling with my wondering mind - and my mom's wondering mind, which is even worse than mine.  lol

DavesMom, we will get through this. So glad to have this website to get good info and to share what we are feeling. From what I have been hearing on here we shouldn't have to wait for snail mail. Did your son bring a laptop? My son is not bringing one but he seemed to think they would have computers there they can use. I hope you here from him soon.

I ditto what you said, Navymomkathy.  Just figured out bc and now ... My son left a week ago tomorrow and I haven't heard anything from him since.  Any idea how long it will be until he can send an email?  Pls tell me I won't have to wait for snail mail.  :)  His Grandma is getting anxious and can't believe we don't even have an address to send a letter to.  Is there a general addy for the ship or do we have to wait until there is a specific address to him individually in order to write to him?  I'm also eager to learn more about sat. phones.  Thanks, sisters.
