Yes, that's Newport. That's the view of the bridge to freedom (back to the mainland). And a sandpit in the background. It was a spectacular June day.

For all - a picture of my daughter's first salute. It was quite a moment. cekj5 - she'll be home, but not near me. I'm on Colorado and she's stationed on the east coast. But at least I'll be able to call. Now I can only send email and hope for an answer when she gets time. Also, internet on the ship is less than reliable. LOL!

Thanks Stevemom56 and pgrlisa. I was able to open the Preparing for OCS so I'll definitely read through that. Stevemom56, I add a "hooray" on for your son starting the Candio stage! Pglisa, when my son was home for the summer and getting ready for OCS I called him frequently from work to see how his day was going but the funny thing is that I hadn't realized how often that was until now, when I can't call or see that caller id - bummer. Although when at college I used to kid him that he forgot my number since I often did the calling. One of the wives, whose husband is in my son's class, started a facebook page. Some are moms and dads and others with families, husbands, wives, girlfriends, fiances etc. Although at different walks in our lives, we all, as well as here, have that common bond of wishing the best for our LOs and anxiously awaiting hearing from them. And, yes wondering all day what exactly they are doing at any given time but then again, do we ever stop wondering. It is so nice that these forums exist! My thoughts and prayers for all the Navy families all over the world !! Hey pglisa, that must have been a special moment when your daughter's husband saluted her! Actually, do they videotape the ceremony?? It would be nice to be able to share with family members that can't make it. I'm glad your daughter will be home in a few months.

cekj5 - Thanks! I'm very proud. My daughter's been gone from my house for about 8 years not, but I still miss being able to pick up the phone and call any time I want. Or seeing her number come up on caller ID in the middle of a crappy work day. It's a short tour and she'll be home in a few months.

Stages of OCS - Indoc - the first several weeks. OC - the middle phase (at least that's what I think it's called). Candio - the final 3 weeks or so. They have the fewest privileges in indoc. They get more in the 2nd phase, then finally, in Candio, they get phones, some work with the next class of Indocs, some have other jobs, and they take finals and prepare to graduate and join the fleet. The first salutes are great. My daughter's was from her husband, as he's enlisted. But she didn't have to give him a silver dollar to get it! LOL!

Thanks pgrlisa! cekj5, Candio is the leadership phase--the last 3 weeks of OCS with privileges. I found some info on Navy Portal--what to expect at OCS and our LO's class group page on facebook I copied to documentsWhat To Expect At OCS Navy Portal.docx. I can email you if you want or try to attach here.

You are all great!! Thank you. Wow, Sue I read about the USS Jason Dunham. What a story and wonderful tribute to this brave, courageous young marine. You must be so proud that your son has completed OCS and is now serving on this ship and pglisa congrats on your daughter serving on her ship too! I imagine it is hard to see our son and daughters go but as Stevemom56 says we must remind ourselves that this is what our children want to do and we can all feel very proud of them. I can't wait for my son to finish OCS and to see his first salute. Can anyone review what the stages of OCS are? Is Candio nearing the end? Now, for a little comic relief (thanks Kathy B.) I think I'm going to put out just spoons at dinner one night and watch my family attempt to eat with spoons!! It's got to be pretty funny for the DI's and such a welcome relief when our LOs actually get forks and knives.

Steve's Mom - congrats on Candio Phase. The end is in sight! Forks and knives are wonderful, along with phones and khaki uniforms! My daughter called me a bit more frequently, and was always happy. Now she's on a ship and I hear from her about onced a week via email.

Rosemarie - I'm not sure why the new site doesn't work for you. It's worked for me every time I've tried it. Here is the link for the military hotels: http://military-hotels.us/

Just tried to open the site you suggested plus this one
http://www.ocs.navy.mil/ocs.asp
Neither will open. The recruiter said that this is the main source of info but how are they supposed to get the info if the site can't be open. I printed out a bunch of info the one time I was able to open the site but did not print out the hotel info about the 2 hotels on the base. Does anyone have the names and phone numbers of them?
