Right now our son is on shore, so all is well. We can leave him a voice mail on his cell. He even came home unexpectedly for Mother's Day for 4 days. What was difficult was during deployment, there was a period of 6-7 weeks when we heard nothing. I had communicated with other parents on his boat and of course, they got zippo too. We are not asking for whereabouts, state secrets or details - just a short & sweet "They are doing fine." would be so appreciated. If the ombudsman had heard and did bother to let us know, then she needs to be made aware that any message, no matter the length is needed to spare the parents nights and days of sleepless anxiety.

Hi, All, Went on my son's ship's website as suggested by NMXXXY and sent e-mail to ombudsman. She answered right away, saying she was putting me on the e-mail list. Also offered to put me on the FRG's as well. Very friendly and offered help when needed. Love this ship. They are really very communicative! Go USS Chung-Hoon!

Beth, it would be great to get some advice but I am not going to rattle her cage or anything. I know the young gal has young children. It's so hard on the guys and families on fast attack subs that I rather be uninformed than cause her any grief. If the one from you hubby's old ship thinks it's OK to email her again and offer to do some relaying of messages etc. I will take it from there. Thanks.

Now I really feel like the parents of my son's boat have been deprived.

Since this is my daughter's first deployment, and she's married, how would I go about finding out who the Ombudsman is for her ship? I'm not sure how much informaiton I'll get from hubby. He has issues of his own, trying to get moved to the new base and selling the house, etc. Thanks!

Jet from USS Dwight D. Eisenhower breaking sound barrier. Love the heart shape behind it!

Chris, From my son's experience (he is now on his ship) and his buddy's (who is waiting to go to flight school) who is still at his ROTC unit, they do "work" from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. doing what their senior officers ask them to do. They have done things like attend funerals for Navy vets to hand over the flag and play taps (my son sang at a funeral), provide transport for someone who needs it, etc. So they are trying to give them work to do. I understand that after this year that will not happen and the Navy will not pay the commissioned officers who are waiting for flight school (at least from NROTC).

Thanks, Sally. I'll check it out. BTW, See SETTINGS underneath your status box on the upper right. That is where you go to change your username. I would suggest changing your username to something w/o your last name.

My daughter has 21 months to qualify for SWO, so I'm not worried about that. She's a big over-achiever. She graduated first in her OCS class in academics! And she'll be crossing the equator on her first cruise, so she'll be a shell back, too!
