Speaking of ombudsman - we have yet to receive a card, an email, a letter, a picture, a video w/o prompting - I started to doubt the existence of such a person on my son's boat - at one point during his long deployment, I did send an email the her (offering to help with communications, if she needed) - got a polite reply that she was busy but will get more stuff out later - right - that was 9 months ago. I know the ombudsman is typically the wife of a senior officer but why take on the volunteer job if you are never going to communicate with the parents. I spend my time playing detective. Sorry. I know I should be more sympathetic.

NavyMomXXXY - She's on a WASP amphibious assault ship. Heading out somewhere on a humanitarian mission. Hopefully, she'll qualify for her SWO pin while on this tour.

Good afternoon. My daughter was commissioned three weeks ago, spent the past few weeks still in Newport at SWOS, reports to her ship today and they leave early next week. Whew! What a whirlwind. I hope to hear from her soon with her shipboard email address. I'm holding up pretty well so far, but got a little misty eyed this morning thinking about it. I know she's nervous about her new assignment, but I'm sure she'll get settled in a few days and will be fine.

Chris, we are up in Northern Calif in Santa Clara Valley - google Stanford if you want to check out distance from Lemoore - in case you daughter wants to visit SF - she can look us up. Free dinner!

NMXXXY,,,,,Thanks, you are right about "in the system" comment. :) I'm doing well. Seems like things are more settled now that he is actually somewhere rather than waiting to be there! Good luck to your XX SWO and enjoy your son being home!

Welcome, LZ27. I am a relatively new Navy mom (son just commissioned in May). I cannot tell you how much this website has helped me and meant to me. These moms are great. They have already helped me over some humps! :)
In other news....got an e-mail from my son. He now has his official onboard e-mail address....or maybe that's in port as well? He is very pleased with his ship, the USS Chung Hoon. He has a job as well, as Asst. Fire Control Officer.
Moving right along.

He will be going to CEC in So Cal which works for me as I live in Sacramento. He already knows he will not be stationed in California as this is his home base. So...who knows where? I know where ever he lands it will be exciting for him. He wants to use his engineering degree. I can't wait to see what this process has done to/for him. Five more weeks and counting!

Thanks Bunker Bee. I am a newbee and am settling into having a son in the Navy. Still working through the alphabet of definations! My son is in OCS in Newport and will graduate on august 20. He just made it through ORLP yesterday and has his midterms and PT exam under his belt. the class as a whole is (or at least his unit) doing well as they got their cell phones on weekend at week 6 and jelly in the mess hall. It is hard to know what is expected/anticipated when you hear bits and pieces from other LO's. All I know is that I waited until this last inspection to make my plane reservations. So my vacation this year will be in RI never in my wildest dreams did I think that is where I be instead of my usual favorite place...Hawaii with friends. I can't wait!

NurseNavyMom: I have been in Maine in the Spring, Fall and Winter. They are all beautiful especially if you get off the main roads. WARING: Some of the roads are closed in the Winter so have a alternate route available. I don't like winter much, but would definiately go to Maine in the Fall and Winter again. We looked at the covered bridges and lighthouses. The hunt is sometimes better than any other part of the trip. Take your time or you might miss something. During the Fall, rooms are at a premium, so book ahead.

Hey, newbies, post a comment, any comment. Doesn't matter if it makes no sense. We have all been at that "clueless but don't want anyone to know" stage. Sometimes, we still are clueless (especially true if you have sailor boys/men). LOL
