My sin said the first day or so was a bit overwelning with some conflicting info. Regarding thw CS rating. He is starting out first day of class with a 5 mile run. So you might want to make sure your son keeps up on his pt.
May receive our First Phone call today from My Son others with the same PIR date are getting theirs I may or may not of already looked at my phone over a 100 times hahaha
hope you all are having a wonderful weekend Hugs
and thank you for all your posts it helps to know what the next steps will be for my Son after RTC :)
sassymom9503 - hope you get your call today!!! You will look at your phone every day 200 times and then check to make sure it is ringing and working lol Well I did daily lol
My son flew into Fort Lee last Saturday with a good size group of CSs - only a handful started classes this past Monday and the others are on hold in Fort Lee - suppose to start classes this Monday. A few of them have been on hold at GL for 2-3 weeks and continued on hold at Fort Lee - so expect anything but hope for the best. Not sure how they figure out who should start and who is on hold. My son is enjoying Fort Lee to an extent. He says it bothersome that the Army guys make nasty remarks to them but our Navy CSs are being the bigger person and not responding or reacting - but he said it's tough lol
NavyMomDPL - when did he receive his orders? This mom is not doing a good job on the "wait and see" lol Congrats to yours on the USS George W.H. Bush!!
TX Trina -- my son too flew out of GL last Saturday. He is anxiously awaiting class to start. He too has talked about how Army makes not so nice remarks to our Sailors. Very sad that this is happening! I thought this was the USA military that ALL of the branches were serving. I say let us moms handle those disrespectful army recruits!! They wouldn't last very long with that attitude then.
Nice to meet you!
Labornurse - Yes ma'am lol I told him it's funny how the Army Recruits are mouthing off but the first time they need a ride to carry their crap... who do they call??? Exactly! Bugs me but it's only for 5-6 weeks (that's what I keep tell him while I fume lol). His best friend & cousin are both Army and they give each other a hard time but never talk down to each other. Nice to meet you too!
So Happy my son graduates CS on Thursday then will come home for two weeks. Over all my son said the CS Classes has been a good experience at Fort Lee. He did have a few negative comments on the Army.
My son had PIR this weekend (10/04) He is InDoc in GL for a week and then ships to Fort Lee, for CS School, I would like to know as much as I can in regards to CS schooling. He said it is the shortest schooling, is this true? Do they have a graduation ceremony we can attend? How do we write them letters?
jappyjship14div375 and Em's Mom - The graduation ceremony for school is very informal. I don't even think they have an actual ceremony. My son said they "graduated" in their classroom so probably not much of an event. The other side to that is that they are ready to leave immediately so if you are traveling to go to the graduation your sailor will be so ready to get home that you may not get in much visiting in the area - at least that was my son's mindset. FYI - they also didn't get their orders/release docs until the last day or so which makes it very hard to plan flights etc.
We really didn't write while he was in school because they have their cell phones with them. Its not as restricted as far as talking as boot camp was.I think they can only talk in certain areas on the phones but you will interact a lot more.
By the way, my son was only supposed to be in GL for a week and it ended up being about a month so that timeframe can change for any "about to graduate BC" Moms out there :).
Congrats Wendy/Chris'Mom ! I'm sure you are so proud of your young man.
Thanks for the information. I only live two hours away from Fort Lee, so if I can attend a graduation of any kind I will. If he is able to leave right away that would be great as he can spend some time with me before heading home to visit with his dad.
I figured there was not much writing once in A school as he does have his cell phone now. It's so much easier getting intouch with him and being able to speak with him whenever I want.
I guess I just don't know what to expect at this point with A school, as I don't have much information on it. He is being held in GL until October 26 at this point, but who knows someone from our PIR group said anyone from l-z is not going to ship for 3 months. My son last name begins with a J but with the sutdown in place anything can happen
My son was held at GL 3 weeks before he was sent to Fort Lee. Holding my breath but looks like he will graduate this friday and then coming home to Colorado. He heard that because he is coming home now he won't be able to come home for Christmas. That thought just turns my stomach.
NavyMomDPL If he gets assigned to a ship - and he has leave time available - they have holiday leave rotations. Generally they can choose to take the first leave period which starts several days before Christmas and they have to return the day after Christmas or the second leave period which starts on the 26th until New Years. So there is usually a leave period available if he has the time to take. With this government stuff going I'm not sure how much leeway the new grads have with possibly cutting their leave time right after school down to make sure they have some time for the holidays but he could ask :). This holiday routine happens once they are out of the whole school/Boot Camp phase. I'm not sure how they do it when they are still in initial training.
my sailor is struggling . she is very homesick. is there someone there that could talk toher? i dont know how to help her.she is at a school for culinary in fort lee.
I will ask my son if there is services. My sob sat in Great Lakes for a month after PIR and then went to Fort Lee. He had a very hard time adjusting as it is a multi branch base. The Insrructora are a bit hard on them for the first week but he got used to it and is now the class leader. Wulk get back to you when he texts me.
Jackie -he said he isn't sure if they are Navy or Army but there are some there. He also said let us know if you want him to listen to her vent or rant or just talk if you would like him to.
Jackie
When I was in the service the best person to talk to was the chaplain. My son said many sailors have a hard time adjusting there. Once he made a couple friends and got used to the routine he was bettee. My son has liverty this weekend. If you want him to maybe talk to her about the base or routine or just listen he will be happy to. He has already helped iyt a couple of other sailors in his barracks that were depressed.
You can send a private message with the information you want to share with someone. I agree with talking to the Chaplain. It is tough being on an Army base while serving in the Navy. My son lucked out completely and has an amazing roommate who only has 2 weeks left and has really helped him meet people and shown him around.
Jackie
You can friend request us I already sent you one and accept . You can th we n Pm one or all of us with her name and barracks. I am sure she is just feeling overqhelmed and once she gets used to the base she will be strong and courageous as she was on thalat day ib PIR.
My son graduated today was waiting to get orders and come home on leave. At 10:00 he all but six of his class were pulled into a room and told they would be on hold at least another week. My son was so down this morning. He is ready to be off the base.
NavyMomDPL - congrats to your son!!! I was afraid that was going to happen to the ones graduating. Is it because of the shutdown that they are holding them?
thanks pat. i am probably just being overly protective. i just worry about her. i am sure they r alll having hard time adjusting to it there. i just dont want her to give up.
ang evansmom, just pray they all start liking it soon. and they find there places there. i bet it is hard adjusting to diffrent surroundings. especially with diffrent branches. how long has your son been there?
Got My Call Today from My SR, I wish I was left feeling better but unfortunatly is did not he is struggling:( is sick and more Home Sick... he was not positve which is so unlike my son, I tried to stay positve and re asure him the best i could but to hear him emotional and know I couldnt do anything tore me up inside... Uggggg now the empty pit in back in my stomach.... I hope when he finally gets his letters and gets further he will be more positive Ship 14 Div 020
Boot camp was the longest 8 weeks . I counted the days as you are. My sailor would tell me after every phone call he struggled. Getting to hug him and listening to him talk about all he learned helped me know he made the right choice for himself. I wrote daily and he told me they kept him going just hearing about what was happening at home. Hang in there mom, you will both get through it.
To be honest - the first two calls I got from my son while he was in BC he cried the entire time. Most horrid feeling in the world but he did make it and it did get better. Thankfully he had a RDC (while it broke my heart) that told him to man up after the second call home. It worked and she became one of his favorite RDCs but she was tough on him the entire time. Your SR DOES have this and will make it! Those first 3 weeks are just horrible for some of them. Sending you giant NMH and will be praying for your SR.
Hi. Our Sr graduated GL 8/30 and held till 9/21. He expected A school to be easier than Basic. He went to Ft Lee. He said it is much harder, very strict and a bit depressed. He said the big thing there is that they had a bad rep before, but the class that left Ft Lee before them had a big party and caused a lot of problems. So now they really have a bad rep with the base. They have to travel in groups of 3.They were told it would not just be reflected on this class but future classes. I am not sure how much NAVAL influence they are getting since it is an all branch school. He didn't know what dry dock meant (he just got his assignment and the USS Abe Lincoln, which is in for refitting till 2016). No one told him. He was saving to replace his issued back pack. My husband said if it was issued, he should take it to the quartermaster for replacement. Not sure how he got a lot of holes in it during all the parading. They gave them a partially legible black and white map of the base, so not sure where things were besides the commissary and PX and class room. Also according to him the food is horrible. When he described how the meals were at GL, no wonder. They had sandwich stations etc, not so apparently at Ft Lee. I think he will be fine once he gets to his Naval station, where he will have other peers with more experience. He is hanging in there. One of the 3's he travels with is Marine. So their barracks is Navy, AF, and Marines. Sent him copy of color map of Ft Lee today. He thinks he will be held at least for an extra week. They are getting conflicting information first with pay, then with leave afterward because of the Govt shut down.
TxPafamily
My son is also in your sons class. He alsi had a difficult tine in the beginning. I believe the government ahutdown and debt ceiling linit will be over by the time they graduate. This should relieve any holds from the graduating class. Our sailors class really did get a lot of grieve feonvthe previous navy personnel. I was told there is a lot of high school drama going on within the barracks. They are strong and will get through it My son also had an issue with his gear speciffically his whites were stained with a forign material and he does not kbow where it came from. He had to buy a new pair of whites
TxPafamily - my son only knows where his classes are, PX, Comm., and Popeyes Chicken (he was happier about this than anything! lol). I hate it but he said the Sailors he hangs with pretty much stay in their barracks - they take turns hanging in each others rooms. He said it's just better that way - he hasn't really shared a whole lot but I know they don't go anywhere and just count the days until graduation. His roommate graduated in the past week and is also on hold for leave before shipping to Japan. Luckily he and his roommate really get a long well but his roommate is really ready to be home for a bit. If this doesn't get solved soon these Sailors are going to be burned out before even starting their career at their duty stations. So far he isn't depressed but he won't be happy if his leave is on hold still after graduating. If it is - I'll be going there and hugging all the Sailors who are on hold lol
Wow this is such a bummer hearing about the atomsphere at Fort Lee although I guess not totally surprising given its mixed branches. My son graduates from bootcamp 11/27 so I am hoping he will be held so we get a loing weekend together. Hugs to you moms with kids at Fort Lee. I'm glad we will have a heads up thanks to you all.
I had to pull the information from our SR as his mom was concerned (if I ever wanted to know something from my son I had to ask specific questions). I am his Aunt, his dad died of cancer in "08 so his Mom is busy working and asked me to read the forum and pass on to her back and forth. He doesn't not come from any military background, and no male role model. He is determined to do this and we have backed him 100%. Sent letters and always tell him how proud we are, and his father would have been. His mother doesn't understand the military lingo on texting. So she asked that I be her voice (my husband is a Viet NAm Vet). We had called Friday, he said he was off for 3 days since today was Columbus DAy, but had some sort of duty that requires sweeping every 2 hours. I told him it was better than cleaning the latrines in the old day with your toothbrush. He hasn't been out of Texas, so this is different. I don't think he is homesick, just confused, with what is and isn't being told. He went from going to downtown Chicago at GL , I guess on leave, or while in holding, to very strict regiment with classes and duty in the evening at FL. HIs roommate bought the $50 wifi, but it is extremely slow.I think the surrounding ARMY is a strain, especially after the previous class escapades. He doesn't know if he can go home in between FTL and his duty station or not now. How to pay etc.So many things to worry about. I told him to take it one day at a time. But I think the transportation by commercial aircraft is the delay on moving some of them, afterward. The confinement to the base and traveling in threesomes must be a drag, this is week 3. Now he is talking about getting more fit and get a second mos as an EOD. All the military branches are very rival have been for decades, but these kids have not been in long enough to be gung ho NAVY, too busy passing.
Hi my son is currently in BC. His A school is in fort lee. Does anyone know if they are allowed to have laptop and/or iPad? Also will they be aloud to go off the base for a few hrs during the holidays? Or could the family come to visit?
After reading the comments, I am getting very worried. Regarding A school. Could someone send me the link for the colored map of fort lee so I could print 1 for my son.
Go to the Fort Lee Va site (ARMY). Graduation site, and then visitors map. You can also click on graduations and a List of all the graduations on the base, and where they are for the day are. But that is where I found the color map in PDF form.
Just wandering if any Moms or Dads out there have any info on the Sailors on hold at Fort Lee. I am wandering why they are not allowed to take leave once they graduate. Any help would be appreciated
Pat I wish I knew also. My sailors roommate graduated 2 weeks ago and is still on hold for his leave - then shipping to Japan. I asked this weekend if they knew why or when and he said no they just told him he is on hold. At first it was the shutdown but I really thought his roommate would be at home on leave by now but as of today he is not and has no orders.

Go to the Fort Lee Va site (ARMY). Graduation site, and then visitors map. You can also click on graduations and a List of all the graduations on the base, and where they are for the day are. But that is where I found the color map in PDF form.
