Hey everyone! So my sailor and I have been talking a lot about getting married and moving me out to South Carolina. My main concern about everything is my schooling. Right now I am heading into my third year at California State University, Fullerton. I have been looking at different universities out there but I'm not sure of which one. So I was wondering if anyone who lives out there goes to any or could give me some advice.

My son is graduating boot camp on Friday and then going to "A" school for the nuke program in Charleston. So I thought I better join this group since we are moving on.
  • Dodie

Carri, Only a little over 2 wks before PIR...how exciting! My son is an EM & graduated from A School last month. He will be home in 9 days for a week of leave.
  • crmom

Does anyone have an EM that will be graduating next week, July 15th from A school?  When do they find out if they passed the final exam, or is there a final exam for A school?  Also, is the A school graduation a big event like the boot camp PIR, or is it a low key type of ceremony? I'm trying to decide whether or not to pull money from savings to drive down for the graduation.  If anyone has any information I'd be grateful.  Thanks.
  • Dodie

Crmom, They have a comprehensive exam (Comps) the Monday before graduation. My son called me that afternoon after he received his results. We didn't attend his A School graduation since we saw him over Memorial Day weekend when we drove his car to him. He told us not to come for his A School grad, but to come to his Power School grad in Feb 2012. I've read on the nukemoms group that if yoy can only attend 1 graduation, Power School is the one to attend.

  • crmom

Thank you so much for that info.  I think that I'll miss this one and aim for attending the Power School graduation.  Actually that would be better anyway because I was not wanting to pull money from savings, and this makes me feel less guilty.  :)  Thanks again.
  • TN Navy Mom (Stennis Nuke Mom)

crmom - I didn't attend A school grad.  Daughter in law sent me a quick pic of my son receiving his certificate and that was it.  She said that it was short, to the point.  I did make Power School graduation on 6/17 and really enjoyed it.  It was about 3 hours long and 400 + graduates.  Pretty impressive to see them all standing at attention, then parade rest along the walkway behind our seating area.  They came to the podium by sections and each name was called, shake hand, smile for mama's camera, shake a hand, pause and smile for mama's camera.  We were able to get really close to the stage area to get good pics.

I would highly recommend the PS grad.  Our funds are limited in our household so I chose PS over A school, and they were home the night of A school grad.

  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

I agree whole heartedly with TN Navy Mom...even if we were both staying at the Villas and we didn't meet up!!!  I would not recommend doing that because you spend the rest of your time on Navy4Moms kicking yourself that you didn't meet eachother!!!!  My son was home that night, too and it seemed like it would have been a watse of a trip from CA.  At power school grad he did not return home.  He is saving his leave for the end of August to go up north to visit extended family.  I will be meeting him there.  :)
  • Bucksmom

Does anybody know when they get leave over Christmas?  Also, do they all get leave at the same time or is it staggered.  My son will be in Power School then and my daughters boyfriend and  his best friend will be in A-School.  My daughter and her bf are planning on getting married over Christmas break so we are really hoping they can all be home at the same time.

  • nvmomma

The base is on stand down (no classes) for a couple of weeks around Christmas & New Year's, so they should both be able to take leave. The only instances I've heard of where they may not get leave (or get limited leave) are if they are in between schools (t-track or grad hold) or in prototype, because of their assigned duty requirements. And, once they graduate and are assigned to a ship, it's anyone's guess when they can take leave from then on.
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

Good Afternoon!  Question - I'm headed to GC July 21st to deliver my son's car to him.  We'll be in Charleston thru Sun. - leaving Mon. morning.  What kinds of things are available to do in the area?  I've heard about plantations, ghost tours, carriage rides.......  Are there things relatively cheap to do?  Any suggestions would be great!  Thanks!

  • javajo50 (MM Power School 1103)

Mama C~  I would suggest going to the Visitor Center on Meeting Street in Charleston.  It is an excellent place to find out what the city has to offer.  They sell tickets for all kinds of events and they are relatively inexpensive for what you get.  A month ago my sister and I paid $30 for a combo boat ride to see Fort Sumter and an additional 90 minute bus tour through the city.  In all it took up a good 4-5 hours of our day and it was great fun.  Enjoy!!

  • wagner's wife

So excited! My sailor graduated 7/8 and we also got married. He left Saturday afternoon and he is coming home Wednesday to move me. This time next week I'll be a Navy wife residing in Charleston!
  • javajo50 (MM Power School 1103)

congrats Wagner's wife!  A new adventure awaits :)

  • clarkedu (MM Nuke Prototype)

I have a question, and I hope this is the appropriate place to ask.  My son's bc PIR will be August 5th (barring any unforeseen circumstances, heaven forbid!), and he is scheduled to leave for Goose Creek the next day.  When is the soonest we can expect to be able to see him after he arrives there?  We plan to drive there after graduation to give him his box of belongings, and I'm wondering if we should try to get there ASAP after PIR, wait a few days or not go at all if he won't be allowed to see us during that first week or two.  Any information or thoughts about this will be very much appreciated!

I look forward to getting to know many of you as my son enters Nuke school and throughout his experience there!

  • clarkedu (MM Nuke Prototype)

Thank you, Shauna, I really appreciate your reply!  I joined Nuke Moms as soon as my son left for bc but have been so consumed with that stage of his "adventure" that I didn't visit Nuke Moms much, until now.  I looked at the Sailors schedule and didn't find anything definitive.  Of course, "definitive" and Navy seem to be mutually exclusive in many regards. lol I will look at that schedule again and see if there is something I missed.  Thanks, again!
  • TN Navy Mom (Stennis Nuke Mom)

TEX my sailor originally thought he could leave about 11:00 after A school grad.  Then a few days before grad it was 4:00.  Then the day before grad it was back to 11:00.

The biggest thing I have learned since my son has been in the Navy is NOTHING is carved in stone.  I'm a list maker/checker offer and this lesson has been nearly impossible to learn, but I'm getting better about being flexible.

I booked my flight in to Charleston for his Power School grad with the understanding that he'd start leave after that grad.  I kept asking about his leave chit in case I had to adjust my fun budget to book a flight home instead of riding with him, because I know anything can change until they get that piece of paper in hand.  I was a shambles until he got that chit (had verbal approval).  He officially got the piece of paper AFTER graduation.

Who knew that the Navy (or any other branch of the military) doesn't follow the same calendar or clock that we do!!!

  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

Graduation is at 9am and lasts until about 11:30-12:00.  But TN Mom is right....he needs to have that chit in his hand before he plans on any leave.
  • mochi1

My son graduated from A school at 2 pm........so definitely not set in stone.
  • Michimom (MM Nuke Mom)

FYI for anyone who is interested:  There are free events at Ft. Moultrie this Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.  The normal entrance fee will be waived for the day.  It's to commemorate an assault on Morris Island's Battery Wagner, in Charleston Harbor.  There will also be some children's activities.  (Just got an e-mail on it yesterday.)

Hope there's some free stuff when we're there for power school grad.

  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

Oh...so sorry I was referring to Power School.
  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

Hi LindaB...there is a discussion above, I will bump it so it will be the first you see that talks about your sailor's schedule upon arrival at Goose Creek.  THe best part is that you can talk to them whenever they're schedule allos them to call you or you to call them.
  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

So, for some reason replies are closed for that discussion so I can't bump it but if you view all you can find it.  It's helpful.  Also much more helpful info in other discussions above.  Welcome and when you have more specific questions don't hesitate to ask them here or on Nuke Moms which is a lot more active.
  • nvmomma

Hi LindaB, I just bumped the discussion elizabeth77 mentioned to the top of the discussion list in the Nuke Moms group - it is very helpful. Welcome!
  • nvmomma

Linda B, type Nuke Moms in the search bar on the groups page, then click on the one that says it has 1481+ members. Once you get to the group's page, you will see the discussion forum at the top; the discussion you want is called 'Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival at GC' - something like that. Good luck, see you on Nuke Moms!
  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

It's actually in this group's discussion also.
  • MJ214 (Ship 11 Div 200)

    Hi ladies,

Haven't been on here in a while because summer is busy busy for me. My sailor has been at GC since June and I'm finally planning a visit in 3 weeks. Any recommendations on what to do while I'm there? I keep Googling the area but it seems like everything that pops up are tourist attractions. I live in a tourist town myself so I'm not to keen on that. I'd love to have some ideas so we don't waste our precious time making plans. Thanks :)

  • wagner's wife

I just moved here a week ago from Indiana.  Extremely new to the area, and extremely FRIENDLESS, haha but we enjoyed our first weekend! I'm so excited to finally be here :)
  • William in Nashua

MJ214 I have a few suggestions but they might or might not interest you Lol.   A walking tour of the Market area of downtown Charleston is nice and there is a lot of shopping.  It is kind of like Quincy Market in Boston it is like an outdoor market, but under a big high-ceiling atrium, and they have food stalls and artisans selling their work.  For a walking tour there are some really beautiful houses there that are part of Charleston history.    Hymans Seafood restaurant is nearby and is  nice too, the place is always packed with a big line out the door to get in.  All of this is walking distance.  My wife was not that impressed with Hymans but me , my older son and my Navy son, and son's Navy buddy all thought the seafood was great.  It is not too expensive and big portions of fresh fish and they keep the iced tea refills coming Lol.  I think this is one of the key areas of town where both locals and visitors go, where you can see a lot of stuff, shop a little and have a nice meal.   It is nice because you park the car once, then you are there for as long as you want.  Charleston is a college town and a Navy town too so there is a lot you can do there without breaking the bank.
  • TN Navy Mom (Stennis Nuke Mom)

We really enjoyed the Carriage Tour and Harbor Tour.  Lots of history and beautiful sights plus you SIT DOWN!!!!  We sat along the battery one evening and watched a full moon rise over the harbor while the breeze blew. (so relaxing). We enjoyed eating at The Noisy Oyster (my flounder was delish!!!)  We also popped in to A.W. Shucks for a meal.  It is such a beautiful town we are looking forward to going again before our sailor hits the fleet.  Palmetto Carriage Co. does a tour that takes you through the residential district BUT that tour stops at like 5 or 6 o'clock so the residents are bothered.  The houses are incredible.  Loved the Market!!!  wish I'd had unlimited funds, the grass baskets are gorgeous (with a hefty price tag)

My DIL took me to Marrington just to walk around and it was very peaceful and quiet with walking trails.

  • MJ214 (Ship 11 Div 200)

Thanks for the suggestions ladies! Very helpful :-) has anyone been to magnolia gardens? (i think that's what its called). Lots of nature tours/boat tour/petting zoo kind of thing. We're both outdoorsy and I'm an animal nut so it looks right up our alley, I'm just hoping its legit. Thanks again for the ideas! Happy Monday
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

MJ214 - I was just in Charleston this past weekend - wonderful city!  Just as an FYI - and this is coming from a local that we met, plus she's former Navy and works on the base still - she said depending on where you plan on staying for hotel to make sure you stay more north up around Ladson, Summerville or Goose Creek area.  We stayed at the Clarion Inn on Dorchester Rd. and our friend said we weren't in the best of areas.  Hotel was fine, just the area was questionable.

On Saturday, we went to the Aquarium ($19.95/person for adults - if sailor buys tickets and shows ID it's a dollar discount for all tickets).  Then we parked downtown in a public parking garage ( we paid a total of $10 for parking all day) and walked the city.  We went down Market St. and shopped in the vending area - anything and everything is sold there - pretty amazing!  Then we walked down to the pier and walked along the Waterfront Park area, past the pineapple fountain and all the way down to Battery Park.  Really neat area - walked up Meeting St./Rainbow Row and saw all the historic houses - some you can walk thru.  We ate at A.W. Shucks - great food!  Be prepared to possibly share a meal - the portions are pretty good sized.  Try their side of Grits - very good!
The USS Yorktown is across the bay from Waterfront Park and the Aquarium, also the Hunley (submarine).  Isle of Palms beach is a really nice beach - water was really warm!  We ate Sunday night at California Dreamin'.  It's right on the water and people actually dock their boats and go eat then leave by water.  My son has been to the Noisy Oyster and loved it too!
Like TN Navy Mom said, there's always a Carriage Ridge and Harbor Tours, but those can be somewhat expensive.

Depending on how much time you have, you'll have to pick and choose what you want to see.  One weekend is NOT enough time to see everything.  Next time we'll go do other things like Patriot's Point or Fort Moultrie or Harbor Tour.

The BIGGEST advice I can give you is to MAKE SURE you have a GARMIN with you and to know how to use it!  We didn't go anywhere without ours.  The roads are kinda crazy and right now there's construction going on, so things are a bit turned around.

Hope your visit to see your sailor is an awesome one and hopefully it won't be so hot as it was when we were there - 95 degrees with humidity of at least the same!  Take water wherever you go - you'll need it!

    Have a blast!

  • MJ214 (Ship 11 Div 200)

Thanks Mama C! I'm looking at a hotel near the airport/Tanger Outlet center. It's right in between base and downtown. I'm not too picky so I should be OK.

I'm definitely going to look into those restaurants and check out rainbow row/meeting street. We're both early risers/late to bed so I hope we can fit in a lot of what we want to do. Thanks so much for all the advice. I can't wait to be down there. And as for the weather, it's been 95-100 with humidity here too...yuck! But at least I'm used to it!

  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

MJ214 - Across the street from the outdoor vender area on Market St. is a Visitor's Center.  They have alot of brochures and a map of the city, so you can see right where you are and where you want to go.  Everything is marked and the different brochures have prices on them, I believe.  Sometimes certain attractions come in package deals or you can do them ala carte.  We just walked because we ran out of time.

Tanger Outlet area is nice - lots of good stuff there.  Have a wonderful time and give lots of hugs and take lots of pictures!

  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

wamomofchris...you should join NukeMoms if you haven't already.  I believe I saw somewhere there that 65% make it all the way through.  Of course someone quoted that from a recruiter and from what other moms have said recruiters are not always know  about the nuke program. I think it's a hard statistic to come up with.  My son says he believes that those who are chosen have the ability and if they do the work they should get through.  With that said I'm sure there are still those that try hard and don't.  My son has not always been the best student but has always had the apptitude.  now that he is in this program I know he is trying hard and he is succeeding.  Lots of sailors can make stupid mistakes, they are very young and I pray my son does not have a slip of judgement.
  • CindyLou (Louisville)

I have also sought out the answer to the success/failure rate. I found such a variance in answers from my son's boot camp, support groups, blogs and any other information I could find. I found the failure rate runs between 35%-75% depending on the source. I know, this range is so wide spread that the answer doesn't help at all.  I personally  decided not to seek out the answer any more and just ask my son how he is doing and encourage and support him during his education and training.
  • n4vyw1f3

Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone new anything. About on base housing for the charleston base. Please let me know.
  • mtngrl2014

    Hi wamomofchris(7/290),

I was worried too when I first heard about the reality of failure rate in the Nuke program. My SRs recruiter made it sound like it was only 10%, so I was shocked when I found the N4M website and read what's really happening! It seems like it's a little bit above 50%. We are really going to have to be their positive support team and help them through it. They can do it!! Is your SRs PIR 9/1?

  • Brian's Mom USS Ronald Reagan

My sons plane just landed in S Carolina and he's an MM headed to A scho. I will encourage him every step of the way !
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

Hi everyone, MM mom here with my son not quite half way through Power School.  I have heard that the days of such high failure rates are over as they now have put in higher expectations at the top end so there isn't as much failure going through.  That said, I believe the greatest rate of failure has nothing to do with bad grades as it has to do with underage drinking!!!  Yes, it does happen and alot.  Encourage your sailor to stay clean for the right reasons (beside the fact that it is illegal) - remember that their future is at stake here.  If any of you have questions about the day and life of an MM, please don't hesitate to ask' I'm here for you and if I don't know the answer, I will ask my son.
  • mtngrl2014

    Thanks Penny!

I'm sure I'll take you up on your offer to come ask questions :) It's sad if it's something like underage drinking taking these young sailors out of the program. I hope that lots of encouragement, in every way, will help our SRs get through to become Nukes!

  • clarkedu (MM Nuke Prototype)

My son arrived in GC Saturday night.  His rate is MM.  I'm looking forward to learning from those of you who are already moving through this journey and to meeting everyone here!
  • TN Navy Mom (Stennis Nuke Mom)

As for failure rates, just an example, my son is on Grad Hold, graduated PS on 6/17.  His section lost about 20% during A school, another 20% during Power School.  Not all of the de-nuking is class failure, underage drinking is a big problem, DUIs, medical, psychological, PFAs, you name it.  Becoming a Nuke is hard work.  They are all up to the task, or they wouldn't be there to begin with.  It is very stressful, long hours and such and the stress gets to some of them.  If you have a sailor in BEQs, encourage them to get out, go to the beach, see some sights, if they don't de-stress occasionally, they will burn out.
  • Kat (MM Nuke)

I just got a spam, I think, posing as a member of Nuke School Charleston.  Something about get a free $250 grocery gift card.  What is the world coming to?  Or is there really a member on here named Janice who for some reason can send emails without leaving a trace?
  • Kat (MM Nuke)

Tn Navy Mom - my son is having a hard time with his roommate who never gets out.  the guys is evidently addicted to WOW and evidently never leaves the room other than for class or to eat.  He doesn't do anything with anyone and stays up most of the night on school nights even playing that game.  then on weekends he's up all night and trying to sleep all day, which isn't fair to my son at all.  They are starting to really get on each other's nerves. The stress is way to intense there for that to be his only outlet and for my son not to be getting proper sleep. And the roommate is not 18, not 20, not even 22 or 24, so he should know better.  And has started failing tests.  So everyone, there are other ways to fail too, and definately encourage them to get out and do something, be with others, don't isolate themselves.
  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

I got an email from Janice saying I could get a MacDonalds gift card for the McDonald's on base.  It's werid.  Didn't open it.
  • illysha10(dylan'swife)

Hi ladies! My names is Illysha. My husband will be graduating from boot camp on 9/9 and we'll be moving to Charleston soon after (hopefully). He'll be a MM. We have a 6 month old son together. I'm just trying to get a headstart on making friends because I know nothing about or anyone in Charleston. :)
  • Crystal(ship11div282)(EM1150)

Hi Ladies, my SR will be there in Sept, to start A school, does anyone know about Thanksgiving, and Christmas leave? If they even get Thanksgiving , I heard they have Christmas leave, any info would be helpful thanks.
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

Kat, what you got was SPAM.  Don't open it up.  Ladies, yes, we have been hacked and from time to time you will see crazy stuff like free gift cards, etc.  Don't open them up!!
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

Supposedly they have a two week Christmas shut-down and try to get everybody out of the dorms...but since this will be my son's first Christmas there, I'm still waiting to find out as well.  Thanksgiving, I'm thinking it is only 1-2 days at most but am open to learning from the more experienced as well.
