You can move there anytime you want but the Navy won't pay for it as it will not be an authorized move. My fiance has several friends who are married whose spouses have not moved to SD yet because it would be out of pocket. On the other hand, there is a female whose husband and children are there but they had to pay for the move themselves. Plus, she had to be on phase three liberty to stay overnight with them. If your husband gets a C school over 6 months (I think) then the Navy may pay for you to move at that time, if not, it's on your dime.
  • newyearsbaby

He'll have to put in a Live Ashore packet to be able to live off base and it's my understanding they're not technically allowed to live off base during A school. But once again, the sailor in my fiance's A school class stays overnight with her husband because she is phase 3 and they do not have to muster each night.
  • aheathe2

Is there any circumstance in which they would move me before his A school? He was told they would, and its been the light at the end of this dark tunnel. You're probably right, and they probably told him wrong. Its just a hard thing to realize this late in the process, especially when we were planning and hoping for a different outcome.

    Thanks for your help.
  • newyearsbaby

Like I said, you can move out there anytime you want but they will not pay for it because you will not be on his orders. A school isn't long enough for them to authorize it. They may pay for this move if his C school is long enough but there are several different C schools with varying lengths, although most have been pretty long lately. He cannot leave base until he has reached a certain phase of liberty so even if you move out there he will have to do his part to get to phase 3 so he can get overnights. It's tough but this is part of military life. No matter what your circumstances, the Navy's needs come first. We are getting married in November and then I'm hoping to move out in December. If his C school isn't long, I probably won't though as he'll be assigned a permanent duty station shortly after. Hang in there and don't freak out. Just take it day by day.
  • MandE'smom(Hi, I'm Mary)

Hi Guys...I have been a silent member because my daughter isnt quite to this point yet, but we will be there soon! My daughter just graduated from boot camp and reports to A school on Wednesday! :) One step closer!!
  • txsailorsam-Donna

Mande's mom my son graduated bc Friday and leaves Sat a.m. I think. He said he is grad and go.
  • MandE'smom(Hi, I'm Mary)

Wow...congrats to you and your sailor!! E wasnt grad and go (thankfully) and will start A school at GL for 8 weeks and then transfer to San Diego. Is that your sailor's plan?
  • txsailorsam-Donna

Your sailor must have signed on for 6 yrs. Mine is in for 4 as of now.
  • txsailorsam-Donna

Anyone know if there is an STG A school group?
  • txsailorsam-Donna

teachertoo... did your son just arrive in Point Loma this week?
  • txsailorsam-Donna

My son is still on hold in Point Loma. He is working on phasing up, has no idea when he will class up. He is thinking of going the 6 yr route but is on the 4 yr plan right now. All of this seeming indecision is hard to deal with. His attitude is good though.
He took a test that had the questions covered up with part of the answers making it so he couldn't see that question thereby getting some questions wrong. . He got a score he wasn't pleased with, took it over got a 100 but thinks the first one will still go on his record. Should his record be blemished by faulty equipment.? Is there anything he can do about that? He's going to check with his mentor. Have a good day... grand son requesting attention.
  • sailormom-cathie

Congrats teachertoo, so glad your kid got his wish, mine loves SD too.
  • sailormom-cathie

  • sailormom-cathie

Just have to share this, my son is graduating A school tomorrow 3rd in his class!!!! So proud of him, now comes the wait to see which C school he gets. Re sending a Birthday cake, can it be delivered to the base?
  • sailormom-cathie

Bev, is your daughter 4 or 6 yo?
  • sailormom-cathie

Thanks Bev, it must be so tough on your daughter after going to school and being excited about doing your job to pull Galley time, good to know its only temporary, if my son gets that it will be tough he has never done more in the kitchen than heat up some mac n cheese lol
  • sailormom-cathie

teachertoo, Congratualtions!! Yea now waiting to see which C school mine gets, he already took ATT while in Great Lakes right after boot camp. So your son already knows his ship assignment?
  • sailormom-cathie

Hi all, I am looking for advice on airline tickets for holiday travel, anyone have any recomendations on which airlines give military discounts, and getting refundable tickets, long expensive flight from SD to Ft. Lauderdale, FL thanks
  • sailormom-cathie

Thanks for the info will have my son check out Southwest asap. He has put in his chit, waiting for approval, good to know SW helps military and makes changes no charge. Looking forward to having him home for the holidays.
  • Sparkle_Mary

Question: My husband sent me a letter today saying he was going to go to school at Great Lakes. He is STG and for I have known was he was going straight to SanDiego, but now its GL. I don't know why, how long, or what he is going to school for there. If anyone knows who has been thru this please let me know.
  • Sparkle_Mary

But see that's what I don't understand. He is 4 years.
  • Sparkle_Mary

We will see.. I will stay in the dark but as long as he is doing good I will keep my head uop cause it will work out the way it is meant to be. Thank you ladies for a little insight as to what might happen but telling me what your Sailors have done.
  • Sparkle_Mary

So frustrating. I want to vent. First we were told J was going to SD for A school. Then it was GL. Then it went back to SD. And Sunday I recieved confirmation from the airline that he bought his ticket from home to A school since he will be home for Christmas. Now it's GL again. I am not believing anything til what I hear at graduation. I don't understand why they are changing it around sooo much.
  • Sparkle_Mary

So J has wrote me a letter saying his A school is 12 weeks long. He said he will go back to GL to do a course there that is 3 weeks long then to SanDiego to do the 9 week course. That is the word as of this week. Anyone else do this?
  • phoebe stg2

Good Morning Mary, Yes my S said that if sounds like he will be in GL for three weeks and on to SD after that. Good Luck making plans....
  • txsailorsam-Donna

My sailor is in week three of A School in SD. Hard week but he seems to be doing ok. He is still trying to decide 4 yr or 6yr then will determing the rest of his schooling.
  • nanny2

Hello, My son arrived in SD this afternoon. He has already sent me a text saying he never wants to leave.LOL  It was only 22 this morning here at home when he left, I wish I was there myself. LOL
  • christina_waits

Hello all! My husband is STG coming from CG in DC. He's in GL right now, then off to SD... can't wait to find out what his permanent duty station will be so I can join him!
  • Sparkle_Mary

Quick question... my husband is thinking about changing from 4 yr to 6 yr... and we were wondering if he does and his school is 1 yr long.. if we would get orders to move me out there or I would have to move myself. Wondered if anyone has been through this situation and knows the answer.
  • txsailorsam-Donna

My son graduates A-school in SD Wed. We know what's next ... hold probably until he gets orders.  I am flying out to see him on  the 10th. Somehow he got the impression no one could attend this graduation. He found out 2 days ago we could have. I am  so looking forward to seeing him. His Christmas leave visit was hampered by the death of my dad. He was in Houston... I was in Md. I did get to spend 4 days of his 11 off with him.
  • nanny2

Hi Denise. Congrats to you & your son. My son will graduate on Wed., wish I could be there. Can't tell you much about school, every time I ask he tells me it's awesome & it's top secret.LOL  My son is in the reserves so he will be flying home on thursday, he is sad to be leaving San Diego, he loves it there.  Can't much blame him there, San Diego or Ky, where today it seems winter is trying to come back. Graduation is awesome, I bet you can't wait.
  • phoebe stg2

Nanny2,  I know your son will be missed.  The group hangs out a lot at the beach to play volley ball.  LOL.  Not the military my huband knew.  Good luck to your son!
  • nanny2

Phoebe, I know he will miss the group too. I told him it seems he is on "vacation" instead of in the military. He replied but I am & I'm also learning at the same time. They do enjoy volleyball, he  sprained his finger during one game recently. LOL I am so glad he was able to meet you & your family during your visit. When does your son graduate?

Deb,  Thanks for the info on graduation, I was feeling bad because we couldn't make it. This will be the first event  of his  we will miss.  I am excited to see him . He lives about 2 1/2  hrs from us, where he has been attending college, so it will be nice  to be able to spend time w/him. Not sure where is path is going next, finishing college or  if he has decided to go full Navy? He tells me last minute because he said I get to emotional. Which I do. LOL

  • Gwynhwyfar

Afternoon, everyone! My husband is at RTC (PIR 3/25) and then heading to school for STG. I've also learned that he is the WORST letter writer in the known world, so I am absolutely desperate for any information that people who have gone through this can share. :)
  • txsailorsam-Donna

teachertoo... I sent you a private message.
  • missinghim(ship 7,div110)

Hi everyone my boyfriend is going to San Diego for STG.. Does anyone know how long A school is?
  • txsailorsam-Donna

My son just finished a-school in SD. I believe it was 8 weeks. He probably will be on hold first waiting to class up.Lots to do in SD.
  • missinghim(ship 7,div110)

would he class up at GL. He said he will be there for about 3 weeks before heading to SD.
  • phoebe stg2

missinghim,  It depends on if he is 4 years or 6 years.  4 goes right to SD.  6 stays in GL for a few weeks.  My son might go six but he is in SD right now and had to wait four weeks to class up (holds).  He classed up when he stated the class.  He was told different things at BC and just had to wait until just before PIR to know for sure that he really was going right to SD.  Be patient and it will all be OK.

  • nanny2

missinghim,  He might be on hold at GL waiting for a spot to open up at SD.  A-school was about 9 wks for my son, he said some had been there wks, even months still waiting to class up.  My son is not looking forward to leaving Thurs. Congrats to you & your boyfriend.

Denise, another ky mom  yay!  I remember what it was like waiting for that first call. Do you know if others from his div. have made calls? I do know they have to earn the phone calls, mine usually came on Saturday.  Graduation is awesome, bet you can't wait.

  • Vanessa

Hey everyone.... my husband is currently in A-school in SD. I am finishing up my degree in Ohio and then possibly moving to SD... he's trying to get into the 6 year program, but currently is only contracted for 4 years. I'm going there in a few weeks for my spring break... I hear it's beautiful!
  • phoebe stg2

For those going to San Diego an FYI. Humphries Inn on Shelter Island was OK, just don't eat at their restaurent.  Walk across the parking lot to http://balihairestaurant.com/.  A relly great view of the harbor. Get a reservation for sunset and watch the lights of downtown come on.  Get a window seat.  Also, Seaport Village is great and Edgewater grill has a wonderful menu. Have a wonderful time.  We did!
  • txsailorsam-Donna

Vanessa... it is beautiful and there is lots to do. Transportation system is the best I have seen.
  • txsailorsam-Donna

Sam got his orders today. He got his first choice. He and a friend got the same orders. He is excited. .
  • d o

Hello everyone,  my sailor has been in sonar school since Oct.2010.  I've just found this site.  I'm so curious to know if my sailor knows your sailor.  He said his room is a "hangout".  I look forward to hearing and learning from you all.  God bless all you Navy Moms!
  • txsailorsam-Donna

do... My son has been there since Oct 2nd. He just finished A-school about a month ago. He has been assigned a ship but C-school hasn't started yet and he doesn't know when that will happen.
  • d o

I was just wondering... if he was assigned to a ship, will he go to C-school or is that still in the working?  My sailor is doing something called ATT on this phase.  He signed on for six years to get extra training.

Right now he's playing Phase Ten w/ a couple friends in his room.  I guess life is hard out there in sunny CA on the weekends!;)

  • txsailorsam-Donna

They are first assigned a ship then c-school because they need to learn the sonar for that particular system. 6 yr does ATT first, then a-school and then c-school, I think. My sailor is, for right now, a 4 yr. He may re-up and cross rate, ie, change jobs.
  • Gwynhwyfar

Hi, all! My sailor arrived out there for A school over the weekend (Saturday departure, fooey!) and it sounds like he's enjoying the weather and confused by the sudden (relative) freedom. He knows that'll change when they class up, and he's working on the NKO stuff.

He's been told that it's possible that he could shift to 6 year STG-AEF if he does well in A school. He's 4-year STG right now. Have you guys hear of anyone doing that?

I'm SO excited that he's excited about all of this. :)
