My Sailor was home at Christmas before she started A School...she had a change of command. She is in C School now and will fly home to Cincinnati (where we lived before moving to NC) in Sept. for her grandpa's birthday, a cousin's wedding and the first birthday of her best friend's baby. Not sure if we can get up there to see her yet or not. : (
Hello STGers. We have a new sailor among the group! My daughter passed battlestations at BC and will PIR Thursday at Great Lakes and depart for SanDiego on Friday for A-school. Any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!
Congratulations to you and your Sailor Joankf. It's almost over! Don't miss the PIR ...it's an amazing ceremony. My daughter is in San Diego...loves it there. The adventure is just beginning.
Congrats Joankf! I hope you are able to go to PIR, it is wonderful to see your sailor after all of those weeks of hard work. My son is in A school for STG right now in San Diego. He loves it. We are waiting to find out what is next. Enjoy every minute of it - it goes fast!
Hi Everyone,
I just found this site, my Sailor had PIR on 5/13/11 and was on hold for A School
in GL until yesterday. She has to complete 6 weeks of classes there before she
goes to San Diago for A & C School. I didn't realize you could go driect from PIR to
A School in CA. Really new at this, so learning much. Thanks for all the information.
CRSmom- glad you found us! You can get just about any question answered on N4M's! Wasn't it amazing to see your sailor after those weeks at bootcamp! My son flew to San Diego the day after his PIR and was on hold there for two weeks waiting for his class to fill up. He is in the middle of A school now and we are waiting to see where his ops class will be. Once he gets that assignment he can come home for a visit! He loves San Diego, your daughter should like it when she gets there. Great to meet you!
My daughter had her PIR in April of 2010 and left the next morning, very early, for Goose Creek as she was initially in the NUKE program. We met her at the O'Hare airport at 3 a.m. to say goodbye! She got dropped from NUKE and then returned to GL for several weeks for her sonar prep classes. Then she drove, all alone, from GL to SD. I tried not to worry...such a long drive for a young woman alone But she made it just fine. She's now in C School. She told me your sailors will make lots of friends there but they are mostly in their own class. it becomes like a little family. While all of our sailors might meet and get to know each other, it's not all that likely unless they seek each other out.
It was so funny when Gaile called her son in SD to see if he knew my son and low & behold they were standing next to each other... Go figure!! CRSmom your sailor will love SD. And the friends will fill her every spare moment.
Thanks for the Welcome. I had a hard time leaving the PIR group.
PIR was Awsome and we got to spend Fri. night, Sat and Sun. with her.
It is hard not to worry about our Sailors sometimes, but we're not in control
anyway.
It sure is nice to talk to her again.
I really appreciate the support I have received from N4M's.
My son went on a camp out hosted by the MWR. He sounded so excited about it. I think it's at Black Canyon. Where ever that is? It's so nice that they provided activities like that for our sailors instead of having them sit there missing the cookouts at home. Now I can't wait to hear his stories when he gets back.
Hopefully I'll get to go out the end of June, if I can find a cheap flight. Any one know of any?
Phoebe, that story is so cute. I was wondering if something like that ever happened.
Thanks phoebe, that was on my list of things to look up. Did you go on the water trip when you went? I was wondering how long of a drive that was from SD.
Don't know from San Diego. We went years ago when we traveled with the boys around Colorado. If you haven't been; a must, along with Indian country and Mesa Verde. No water trip down the canyon. Make reservations way in advance. We did a rapids trip along the Colorado River at State Bridge (South of Steamboat Springs, CO). The best rapids trip is Browns Canyon along the Arkansas River, Colorado. Near Buena Vista.
All of those things sound like so much fun. I remember going to Mesa Verde when I was 14. I'll never forget it. I would like to take my husband, he's never been to Colorado. Isn't it still kind of cold there now? He hasn't seen the Grand Canyon either, so I think it's time we went out west.
My sailor is awaiting ops training. Starts June 6th, then leave. He got his deployment orders today... Aug 1st. He entered bc on Aug. 4th. Lots of hold time.
From her picture, she's pretty too. Has she found a church that she can plug into? They can be especially nice to their service people. It can also help ease the loneliness if they have a young adult program.
What's the MWR like out there? It's sounds like she has a lot of common sense if she's realized drinking will only compound her problems. Beauty and brains can be an intimidating factor to male and female alike. Raising boys has helped me understand how silly my "female" point of view can look to them. I can't tell you how many times I've said, "Just because my ideas are different than yours, doesn't mean they are wrong!"
It sounds like you're entitled to a little bragging. Congratulations on having a sailor with the Navy Achievement Medal;)
I had to ask my sailor the same question. It's a group on base, (it might be volunteers) it stands for Moral,Welfare and Recreation=MWR. They have helped with things as small as rides to the airport to as large as counseling for various reasons.
Our daughter just completed her PIR on Thursday in Great Lakes and is in San Diego with her new group of A-School STG'ers. She's loving the location and looking forward to the challenge ahead!
Wonderful, joankf. Hope she gets in lots of beach time. Emily says the days can be rather warm but the nights are generally cool enough for her to wear her beloved hoodies. haha.
Hello Ladies.. Its Mary.. I hve not been on here since my husband graduated BC in Dec.. long time. A little update.. I have moved out to SD while my husband is in school... doing good. He is finish with his A school and is in his ATT class... he resigned for 6 years so we are still waiting for his "official" orders for C school to come. Other than that.. it is beautiful here! My husband might know some of your sons/daughters/wives/husbands. We are not alone.. tough.. I have met some younger ones who are having a hard time adjusting.. but I live right off base and have my doors open for anyone who needs a friend, a place off base to relax, a shower without soo many eyes.. lol. I hope everyone is well!
It turns out the Black Canyon place that they camped at, was near Hoover Dam. They just slept on mats without tents in sleeping bags. He really seemed to enjoy it, except for an older lady (60's?) went w/ the group and broke her ankle at the top of one of the trails they hiked. He said she was really bossy and was snapping at them as they carried her down. He was thinking, "we could just leave you up here." (I guess she didn't think she should be nice to people that helped her). They flagged down a boat and got her to a hospital. He canoed back to camp by himself. Didn't hear the details as the phone signal was lost. He did seem happy about the whole experience.
Nice to meet you Sparkle Mary. My son has a roommate that's married whose wife lives off base. Wouldn't that be something if it was you! Thanks for your kind invitation, I'll pass it on.
Mary...Nice to know your door is open to the younger sailors. Emily has told me she has a mentor there...didn't realize the navy did that for them. She goes to him if she has any problems (like when her pay got all messed up somehow) and he and his family have invited her home for special occasions, such as Thanksgiving, when she can't get home. It's nice to know she has a more experienced advocate to help her.
We have a MWR at the NEX and they are a great place to get military discounts for some of the local places.. zoo, safari park, legoland, seaworld... etc. If you buy tickets through them before heading out to the places.. its a noticable difference cheaper. Some places around let the military in for free. I know the San Diego Zoo allows my husband in free with his active duty card.
My boyfriend will be STG-AEF, and he has told me that when he finishes ATT in GL he'll have both his A school and C school in San Diego... can anyone tell me what I can expect while he's there? I am moving there with him (not "with him" since we're not married...but I'm moving ther because of him), and I was wondering what his liberty phases will be, when the best time for me to move there would be, what it will be like for him while he's in school there (I know as an STG all the instruction is classified) and really anything else.
abuon.... my daughter is in C school there now and loves it. She has pretty much freedom to come and go. She gets to the beach fairly often. I don't know all the specifics but she seems to have a fair amount of free time and of course she's "off" on weekends except when she has duty/watch.
Thanks proudnavymom! Do you happen to know of he is allowed to live off base in C school if he is married? We are getting married before he starts C school. Also, do you know what kind of liberty he has while in A school?
abuon: It's mostly like a regular 40 hour work week. He will have some weekend duties. My son just started a new class and it is afternoon not morning. Your sailor will be spending a lot of time at the beach. You should try to find an apartment near the base. One wife lives 15 miles away...really hard on hubby. The other lives walking distance. Much better.
My son is only in San Diego a few more weeks. He has enjoyed it... lots to do... loves the beaches. He will finish ops soon, come home for 9 days then deploy from Mayport, Florida. I am both excited for him and anxious about the deployment because of where he probably will be. I will definitely be in Florida when he returns.
abuon -- When my son first arrived after boot camp he had to stay in uniform and couldn't leave much. After a few weeks, I think, he could start leaving base. He was on holds for about four weeks. When he classed up "A" school he was given more passes. He is now in ops training, ( "C" school is done ). He had only five days before his next class started and it will run right into the following class. So he has had no real "vacation" sense starting boot camp. We are hopeful he'll be able to come home in December for a few weeks. We have been to SD twice to see him. What a wonderful place to be stationed.
Abuon...just talked to my daughter. She said when your fiance arrives in SD, he'll be Phase II. He'll have curfews..9:45 on weeknights, 11:45 on weekends. When he reaches Phase III there are no more curfews. Phase III can be earned rather quickly depending on performance and getting stuff done. If you go out while he's still in A School and get your own place, once he gets to Phase III, he can technically stay with you since there is no curfew. Once you get married, he'll start getting BHA (housing assistance) at the rate determined for San Diego. She said if you married before you got there, (but he'd have to get approval) he'd pretty much skip Phase II and get BHA immediately for your housing. I hope I got that all right....I was scribbling notes. When he gets there and is assigned a mentor he can get a lot of help and information then.
I have been getting some conflicting information about when he will class up. I was hoping that since you have had people in the STG program you may be able to give me more correct information!
I have been told that between ATT in GL and A school in SD he will have some time off... is this correct? Do you know how much time? Or does he get sent there right away? I have also been told that he may have to wait before he actually starts A school depending on how many sailors are finished with ATT since it is a self paced class and STG is a pretty small program from what he says... is this true? We were planning on getting married in November before he starts A school and I just want to know if this is possible or if I should start looking for other options... I know it's pretty much impossible to plan anything arounf Navy life but unfortunately I am a planner by nature and occupation and am going a little bit crazy with all of this! So any experience you have had I would really appreciate hearing! Thanks ladies :)
abuon...I don't think there is any way of knowing exactly when they class up. My daughter left GL for San Diego immediately when she finished there. She worked in the gally until she classed up - sorry don't recall how long it was, a few weeks maybe. Then she had a few more weeks between A School and C school. But you can never be certain when they class up. He'll have duty and/or other jobs during the gap.
I am aware that every situation is unique and timing is different for everyone... just wanted to know if it HAS happened and is a possibility... just trying to formulate a Plan A...Plan B... Plan C.....etc so I would just like to be aware of every possible scenario we could find ourselves in!
The Navy works on Navy time...and I have no idea what that is. LOL So you just aren't going to be able to make plans while he is in school. My son was planning on coming home between his 2nd class and 3rd class (whatever they were). And even thought he would be on holds for a few months. He had less than a week off and got in a class that had already started the day before. Go figure. What I do know is if it is graded (other that "pass/fail") he has to work hard and try for top of the class. Means a lot. Good Luck!
Thanks Phoebe, I know that about Navy time for sure! Just want to know all the possibilities so I'm not blindsided by anything... we have a lot of things to do and even having a loose time frame would be helpful, or at least knowing what COULD happen.
My daughter drove from GL to San Diego as well. She had only 4 days to make the trip. It was time enough but no extra time. It was unnerving for me to have my "baby girl" driving all by herself across the country like that. She literally drove coast to coast because she had been stationed in Goose Creek, SC...went from there to Chicago, then Chicago to SD. At least she saw the country. haha.
Thanks tmsy, and everyone else! You have all been so helpful! And congratulations on your daughter making it through A school! Has anyone been to SD? I have not yet but am getting very excited to go!
I can give you some names of people to visit while you are there. Wives of Sailors. PM me for info. We stayed on Harbor Island and also on Shelter Island. Both real close to the base. We flew SouthWest and got a real good deal for air and hotel. We plan on going again so let me know what your plans are. Maybe even with Molly's adopt a sailor in September. WooHoo!!
Deb M... I am a bit techie challenged. I did what I thought you said to do but couldn't find ship names. I found their class but no links to the actual ships. Any help appreciated. SF will be on the USS Carney, an Arleigh Burke destroyer.
Thanks tmsy! I'm very excited to go out there-luckily I work for a hotel so I can get pretty good rates whatever time of year it is, I will probably be going out there around the end of Nov/beginning of Dec to start looking for apartments & jobs, and I'm so excited to check out the park and beach you mentioned! I hope you can get out to visit your daughter as well, is she in school there or stationed there?
My sailor said good-by to SD and is on his way home for a short leave. He will leave for his first deployment very soon. He finished up number two in his class .02 pts behind number one. I am on my way to the airport to get him now. Can not wait to see him.
