Congrats Donna!  Our son gets to come home for a few week in Aug. but he will still be in SD until mid November.  Than he joins his ship.  He will be based in FL. on the Sullivans.  Where is your son headed?
  • txsailorsam-Donna

My son is headed to Maypor, Florida  going aboard the USS Carney.                  Am I allowed to say what fleet he will be in?

I am very proud of him. He has worked very hard.

  • txsailorsam-Donna

    Thanks Deb.
  • ProudNavyMom

I'm beginning to despair that my daughter will ever deploy  She was delayed upon leaving the NUKE program...cost her several months delay changing to sonar.  Now, she's expecting!!  I'm delighted, it's my first grandchild, but female sailors get 12 mo. shore duty after the baby is born.   So she'll be in almost 3 years before she ever sets sail!   She jokes that the fleet is a myth.  aha
  • txsailorsam-Donna

It is my understanding that she can cross rate. It is encouraged. She needs to talk to a career counselor. There should be one connected to her ship.
  • josh'saunt (Patricia)

Okay, new to the group, and whole Navy thing too. This is my nephew, Josh. He became like my son after his mother died 8yrs ago. His uncle and I are so proud. He did really great with phone calls when he first left bootcamp and went to San Diego, but not so much now. He has called to request cookies though, LOL. I would like to send him some family pics but maybe in a small collage frame. Anyone know if this is allowed or have any ideas for a care package?
  • ProudNavyMom

Josh's Aunt.... you can send him anything you want now that he's out of bootcamp.  I'm not sure what they are allowed to display in their rooms though...I can't imagine they can't display a few pictures.  The mail delivery is sometimes slow so I wouldn't send anything perishable.   My daughter loves getting gift cards for the restaurants...most national chains are nearby.
  • abuon18

    Hi everyone,

My fiance is in boot camp right now. Then he was told he would stay in GL for ATT (did any of your Sailors do this?) Then go to San Diego for A & C school. I am pretty sure this will not change, although can never be 100% until he gets his written orders in a couple of weeks. My question is about ATT. Since it's not A school, what kind of liberty will he get? Will he get phase 1? Or even phase 2? I am trying to figure out some things and this information would be really helpful!

    Thanks :)

  • ProudNavyMom

Abuon... my daughter was at Great Lakes for ATT.  She initially was sent to Goose Creek for NUKE but returned to GL for her ATT for sonar.   She was there a couple of months, I think, then went to SD for A & C....in C school now.   At GL, she was in the night school so she had very little liberty...no time for it I guess.  But she told me they all get Phase 1 until they earn phase 2.  How long that takes depends on how badly they want it and work for it.

  • abuon18

Thanks ProudNavyMom that is very helpful!

  • ProudNavyMom

My daughter has twice had her car broken into.  The first time, there was stuff visible, such as her GPS,  but the second time, there was nothing of value visible so maybe it was just vandalism.  However, no other cars in the neighborhood were damaged.   It just infuriates me....she's got enough on her mind without hooligans causing such damage.   Makes you feel very violated.
  • d o

Will the insurance help at all with the stolen car?  Didn't they used to hang horse thieves?  How is a car different?!  You have my sympathy. What a rotten thing to happen.

Josh's aunt, you have a lot to be proud of, it's wonderful that he is getting on with his life.

  • josh'saunt (Patricia)

Yes I am very very proud of him. We surprised him in GL at PIR because he didn't know that more then 4 could possibly get in to see him walk, so he was very happy. I and my husband along with our 4 kids (who think of him more as a big brother than anything else) and great grandma drove from Wichita up to Great Lakes. Even his father didn't know that it was a possibility when I told him. Apparently I read more on the bootcamp site than he did :)  Phone calls have been very few but he's loving San Diego. I saw him on facebook today and asked about class but he says it hasn't started yet. He's been there since the 16th! He did ask for cookies, so since I work at the Post office, I will see how soon we could get that request filled. I've stopped picking on him for not emailing back while he's on facebook. So hard to remember they are not kids anymore and we are not the center of their lives (at the moment anyways.) I just hope that he gets all that he can out of this opportunity.
  • ProudNavyMom

Josh'saunt...it could be weeks and weeks before he classes up.  My daughter worked in the galley and did some duty driving while waiting to class up.
  • txsailorsam-Donna

Heard from my deployed stg today. He is on his first deployment. Left Monday. He is liking it although he did bust his head open on his rack. He likes the stg job. IIt was good to hear from him.
  • txsailorsam-Donna

tmsy22.. thanks for the response. Good ideas of what to put in the boxes. SF has a birthday aat the end of this month. We celebrated while he was home but a little something at the time is n order I believe.
  • ProudNavyMom

I've sent packages to my daughter via Priority Mail and she gets them in the promised times.    If you want something to arrive quickly, you might try that.

  • ProudNavyMom

Yes, if they are deployed it is irregular.  When I mailed stuff to my daughter priority, she was in San Diego....it arrived in 2 days.   I imagine when deployed it's ineffective.
  • NavyMom

hello everyone, i am new to this and hope to catch up.  missing my son so much who just left last friday for his first deployment.  got emails for the first 3 day,,, i guess they're so far away at this time.. no more emails...
  • ProudNavyMom

Hi navy mom....welcome.   My daughter has yet to deploy...at the rate she's going, she might never! lol.   She finishes C school this month, then has a month long course...somehow related but she's also expecting in March so I doubt she'll see deployment before 2013!   She jokes that the fleet is a myth...it doesn't really exist.  haha.
  • txsailorsam-Donna

Anyone on here have anyone on the Carney?
  • joankf Ship11 Div 181

Our daughter graduates Monday from A school 2nd in her class and we are very proud of her.  She is assigned to Maypor after OPS.  I am enjoying reading all your posts and wish your sailors God speed and good fortune.
  • NavyMom

@ProudNavyMom, thank you.  My son was also at SD for a year for his courses. The only good thing is we live about 3 hrs. away from SD, so he's home when he got a chance. I knew he's missing home now......after those long wait...

@DebM, thank you.  He mentioned that, too....he said "Mom, i'll probably talk to u in my next port".....

  • txsailorsam-Donna

My son left SD just recently and is now deployed for the first time. He was no. 2 also in a-school and ops. Ops he was .02 pts behind no.1. Strange thing he was no. 2 out of all the bc kids, too again by .o2 pts. weird. He had boils the whole time in bc and wouldn't tell anyone because he didn't want to be set back.

    Have a good weekend everyone.

Heard from SF... He is really enjoying deployment. He is almost finished with his sonar quails. I love hearing from him.

  • d o

Just read everyones post.  I've been off line since my last computer died from a lightening strike.  We thought our sailor would be in school through next Sept., but he says he has orders now to Hawaii in the fall. txsailorsam-Donna, what's it like sending them on that 1st deployment?  How are you coping?
  • txsailorsam-Donna

I have both a  pride in my son and an ache in my heart. The ache is quite selfish... i miss having him around. All that is diminished when I get fb messages and ship to shore calls hearing him doing so well. He has a focus, determination and joy I've not heard in my son until this deployment. I hope all that stays with him through out this deployment. I have so much other painful stuff going on at home with one of my other children that it makes missing SF greater but would have him at no other place right now because he seems so happy. Coping... I am doing ok. I just hang on and wait for the next call or fb message. I am not sure I could have sent him off in Mayport but I sure will do all in my power to be there when he returns.
  • ProudNavyMom

I have a shameless brag.   My daughter's C School graduation was yesterday.  She was officially #1 in the class.  She worked very hard for this honor and we, of course, are so proud of her.    She hopes to be able to take some leave in September and come home for a visit.  We haven't seen her since Christmas.
  • d o

ProudNavyMom  your name fits the occasion!  May that be her pattern her whole career!

txsailor, thanks for sharing. That was well said.  Keep your chin up w/ the other, it will turn around.  Maybe we can meet for a milkshake when you come to Fl.  I'm not sure how I ever get to Hawaii either, but it always seems to work out.

  • txsailorsam-Donna

    do2... where is Winter Haven?

Proud Navy mom...you have bragging rights. I did when SF graduated #2 with a 98.9 average.# 1 had a 99.2 average. Smart young pole.

  • ProudNavyMom

thank you ...they are all smart, fine young men and women.  They deserve any recognition we give them.
  • joankf Ship11 Div 181

Just spoke with my daughter who is on hold after A-School until she starts OPS in September. I asked her if she was sweeping the floor and she said no I'm painting!  Wish I could've initiated my own "on-hold" work assignments when they were growing up! LOL  My husband and I are looking forward to a visit with her in October.
  • d o

It's about 3 hrs from Mayport. They are about to open a LegoLand here in the old Cypress Gardens.

A trip to SD sounds wonderful.  Are you going to stay at the Navy Lodge?

  • Cher11

Hello Everyone, I'm new to this group and wanted to introduce myself. I have 2 sons in the Navy right now. They went in together and both went to school for IT. I think it surprised both of them how difficult IT school is. The younger one is more of a math whiz and he is working hard and still in school. The older one didn't do as well and admits that it wasn't his cup of tea!! He changed rates recently to STG which led me to you!! I think this will be a better fit for him and we're excited because we live in central California and will be able to drive down to visit him while he's in school. He is interested in working on subs, does anyone know if STG's work on subs also? What would your sailors advice be to succeed in A school? Thanks in advance....Cheryl
  • navymommo

    HI Cheryl!

I am new too - so I don't have any answers for you.  I am also looking for info about this program as my son is coming from AC (pensacola) and will be arriving in SanDiego soon.  We are from the East Coast- he has never been to California! Can anyone tell me about this aschool?  How long is it?  Also would welcome advice!!

  • txsailorsam-Donna

I think the a-school is about 6 weeks, maybe 8 weeks. My son finished in July. San Diego is a beautiful place to be with lots to do all within walking distance of the base or the trolley system. Course work is not easy. All study done while in the classroom. Study sessions offered daily and highly recommended. There is usually a test every week as well as a practical hands on test weekly.
  • abuon18

My boyfriend is graduating boot camp next week and just got his A school orders, after ATT he has A school from Nov. 28 to Feb. 1 if that helps you Cheryl :)
  • ProudNavyMom

Hi Cheryl... Welcome.   Wow, two sons in the Navy.... give them our thanks for serving.   When my daughter enlisted, she scored a 93 on the ASVAB so they put her in NUKE...shoved her is more like it.  But she was game and after bootcamp, was stationed at Goose Creek, SC.  We were thrilled because we lived in NC at the time and she was fairly close.   But NUKE is tough and it was not her cup of tea, good ASVAB score or not.   So she was reassigned to STG too.   They sent her to San Diego and there we were on opposite coasts!!!   Since then we've relocated in Texas for my husband's work so it's better.   She loves it out there, finished at the top of her C School Class but won't yet join the fleet as she is expecting. We tease that she'll never join the fleet at this rate. lol.    Going out there in March to meet my 1st grandchild (Due 3/5)  Can't wait.
  • phoebe stg2

ProudNavyMom...was it your daughter that was in a race for top of the class with my son? My son said he came in 2nd by 1/100th of a point behind the "female" that is now pregnant. LOL You tell your daughter "you go girl". Was your daughter part of the retirement ceremony last June? Hummm!! See my picture...
  • ProudNavyMom

Phoebe... I don't know...I thought she told me the 2nd place Sailor was another female.   Her class just ended a couple of weeks ago...I'll ask her again.   She and her roommate just left for Phoenix for the long weekend to visit her roommates family.    She called me to complain that it was 112 in Yuma.   I told her to keep driving home...it's only 101 here.   haha.
  • SailorAlphaTango

STG "A" School is 9 weeks long once the student classes up. They're now having students beta-test computer based training for "A" School. The "Ops" class times vary and only 6yos (6-year technical contracts) receive "C" school orders which also very in length.

I was Honorman in my "A" school by .01 percent with D. Johnson behind me. I just graduated SQQ-89 4,6,10 Ops today as Honorman with a 100% average, the second person in 3 years to accomplish that percentage according to my instructors. My mom is VERY proud of me LOL.

  • ProudNavyMom

As well she should be....But I think she'd be proud of you know matter what. : )

  • navymommo

that's very helpful info.  What does beta-test mean? Can you give any advice to incoming students or their moms?  Should we plan on visiting for a weekend during his school? Is there a graduation?

    Congratulations on your success!!

  • d o

It's nice to hear from a sailor.  Congratulations Sailor Alpha Tango,  I think I can speak for all the moms on here with joy and pride that you are on our side, and not the enemies.  Way to go, and thanks for posting!  Good luck with your career in the Navy.
  • joankf Ship11 Div 181

Cogratulations Sailor Alpha Tango!  My daughter begins OPS in September.  Maybe she'll be the 4th 100%!  She then goes to her duty station in November.  We're very proud of her and all of you!
  • d o

I can't believe my sailor's1st ship is in Hawaii!  He reports this fall.  It's so fall from everywhere, and a 91/2hr + flight for me.  I'm happy for him, and sad for me.
  • ProudNavyMom

Yeh.. but WOW, Hawaii.   And that gives you a great excuse to go visit!
  • d o

I didn't even make it to SD once.  I would be ironic to have to fly out there to catch another flight to Hawaii...and a miracle in this economy.  I guess it's a good thing I believe in them:)
  • saladine67

Do STG get liberty or leave between A school and their ship?
  • d o

Yes, he made it sound like he will in a sense be kicked out of his dorm after this next graduation.  (He's done several classes past C school)  So  he can come home until he has to report Lord willing for a week or so.

  • astrosmom

    hello all,

Very new to this site and have one coming to San Diego for STG in a few weeks...is there anyone else that's a "newb" like me?
