I went to Kyler Estrada's funeral today. The Navy and Marines were there in force to help support the family and were a real blessing. There were more than 10 fellow Corpsman in attendance. Pray for the family!

  • MEsailormom

So wonderful you could attend. I hope it is OK I feel you represented all of us. I am sure it was very, very sad.

  • mikes mom

Paying for all our Military, as things seem to be on the rise

Hey y'all!  been sneaking in and reading but not posting, so much going on, wouldn't know where to start!  5 more weeks and my cub leaves the sand!  Thank heavens!!  Says things up his way are quite heated up after the recent events, spending long hours in the OR with lots of casualties.  My adopted cub, lol, cub's bff is in the south, in Marjah (sp?) and says things are quiet and they are bored.  Told him to hush and be greatful!  He still has months to go on his deployment!  Oh to be young...

All is going well in my neck of the world, having a very warm winter and loving it!  House is just about done, got a smile on my face...life is good.

.Hugs to all, keep all in my heart and thoughts all the time!  XO

  • MEsailormom

Hellooo out there...foot of snow coming tonight. You are all so quiet. Hope evrything is OK. Shipped Sailor Son's snowboard out to him last week. It seems he found there were mountains in CA that the Marines (and their ever faithful Corpsman)don't have to run up.

Off topic!  I know most of you moms and wives are younger than me but you are all headed to where I am one day.  And, that is the land of menopause!

Last night, several of my friends and I attended Menopause, the Musical.  OMG, it was hysterical.  I laughed until it hurt.

There was a smattering of men in the audience and several younger women (probably laughing at their mothers).

If you get the opportunity to see this musical, see it.  You will be glad you did!

  • mikes mom

  • vettespace

    Just north of my home!

  • MEsailormom

    Wow...hold on Sir Vette

  • IDCmom#1

I lived in Libya while in elementary school.  It really is a wonderful country with wonderful people.  However, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near there until the citizens decide who is in charge.  Makes me sad that my brother, who was born there, has never had the opportunity to visit.

Vette, I definitely prefer our hurricanes to your tornadoes.  At least we get advance notice and can get out of town.

  • mikes mom

OMGosh !!!! What pics Sir Vette : ( Scary to this Cali girl... Remember what happened last year so you better keep in touch with all your girls in this group or we will just hunt you down : ) We worry...

    Please stay safe

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Vettespace, stay safe the news indicates the weather could get rough again.
  • velvetlace

Vette-  Stay safe!    My Dad was from Iowa, and when he retired from the Navy he refused to go back to Iowa because of tornadoes and snow.   So, we came to California where we only have these earthquakes.  Ha!

    Mary

  • mikes mom

    Look what I found : )  LOL

  • velvetlace

mikes mom-    I remember the pink princess phone.  How cool!  This is a collector's item.   I remember having an avocado green one in the early 70's.  I think we rented it.

    Mary

  • mikes mom

Mary - The Princess phone is how I got my name in our group : ) One evening we were all talking about our first phones and mine was the princess.. My friend just sent me a pic of hers ..

  • velvetlace

mikesmom-   How cool is that !   Thank you for sharing how you received your nickname of Princess.   That is a great story!

Our weather was foggy all day.  I am not complaining considering all those terrible tornadoes in the midwest and the south.  I will take fog over tornadoes any day in the week.

I hope that all of your ladies are well and safe!   I pray at mass every week for our corpsmen/corpsperson.   God bles them and keep them safe.

  • velvetlace

I have a greenish blue tub tope, tourquise color, but I think I will just put on an Irish sweater.  I bought some Irish soda bread today.  I wish I could share it with all of you!

I personally love playing Irish songs on my accordion, especially Danny Boy!

    Erin go braugh!

BettyB-     I can't wait for our virtual party!    I will never forget St. Patrick's Day in 1989.  I was living in Visalia, CA at the time. We went to a restaurant called The Vintage Press, and we drank and sang Irish songs into the wee hours of the evening.  It was so much fun!  In fact, I think my Cub was conceived that night!   Woot!

Below is a picture of my father, Lt. Cmdr. E.A. McCammond, taken right after WWII.  He was a commander of a ship that carried aviation fuel, USS Pumper, during the war.  His picture is a book entitled, Disaster at Bari, bu Glenn Infield.

It is ironic that his grandson, my cub, is now in the Navy.   Both heroes, in my book!

Betty-   Keep that thought!   Home, cub!!!!

    Mary

Betty-   My son and his grandfather have the same blonde hair and blue eyes.  My son is a lot like him, and my father passed away when my Cub was about 14 months old.

    Mary

  • velvetlace

    Carol-

Yes, I have been teased all of my life because I play the accordion.  It is like lawyer jokes!  Yikes, I get those too!   Help!!!!

    Mary

  • velvetlace

Thanks, Carol.  I wish I had a picture of my mother in her nurse's uniform when she was a Navy nurse.  I will look around.  She hated having pictures taken of her.

    RuthVH-

Thank you for the kind words.  I hope that your son gets his promotion.  My Cub is taking the E-4 test in about a week.  I hope he does well on it.

I totally understand about your Dad.  He would want you to be with his grandson.   God bless you!  I will keep you in my prayers.  <Hugs>>>

    Awwwww camping ... lol.
  • NanZam

Hi Kat,  I will not know how you feel until my son's time comes up for deployment, but I do worry and stress over this, and I know it comes with the job that they chose, but it's still scary.  I will keep you and your son in my prayer's.  I have found this site so helpful, and hopeful, and useful in our journey that I hope it will be the same for you.  God Bless You and take care.

  • vettespace

Ruth, I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's passing.  I know he was ill and is in a better place now.  We'll keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers!  Hopefully, the "relative" fun doesn't get too out of hand.

Momma Kat, my cub deployed to the sand box "pit" last year and I'll be happy to answer any questions that I can.

  • velvetlace

RuthVH-   My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.   I know when my dad passed away, I was devastated on one hand , but on the other hand, he had been paralyzed with a stroke for over three years so in a way I was relieved that he was now with God and not in any more pain.   Your Dad and my Dad are in a better place.  HUGS>>>>   Love, Mary

  • velvetlace

Kathy-   I hope your cub passes his E-5 test with flying colors.   My cub will be taking his E-4 test next week, so I am praying that both of our cubs do well!

    Mary

  • Anna

Hello, Momma Kat, I am another seasoned parent about deployments. My cub and Sir Vette's cub went to the sandpit at the same time last year.  It was 7 months for my cub, but has Kathy said........Nothing in the military is routine.  I could not have made it without the help, love and compassion of this group.  Have meet me some lifelong friends, that are always there when you need help.  I have always been the type to handle sh&% when it comes along, but nothing prepared me for a deployment.  It is called a "we-ployment" with this group.  We are in this together.

Just heard from the Colorado Mini-Meet Up.........look at our girls????  Don't they look wonderful????

  • velvetlace

MommaKat-   I hope your Cub does well on his E-3 exam.  My Cub will be taking his E-4 exam next week, so I pray that he does well.

    Mary

  • velvetlace

Carol-   Thank you for complimenting my son.  He doesn't realize that he is good looking.  He is always critiquing himself.   He is spirited!!!   He was in a lot of plays during high school and when he was in college.  He is a natural on the stage.  It must be the blarney!
    Mary

  • Anna

I can help, Kat.  My cub went to the sandpit in Feb, but didn't come home until Sept.  There was snow on the ground when he got there.  They take both gear for cold weather and hot weather.  When it starts warming up, then they ship their cold gear back home.  I sent good warm socks for my cub during the cold and then neck coolers when it got hot.  They ask not to send UnderAmour for the cubs.  It melts to their skin if they are hit by an IED.  Got to be prepared for anything.
