    Good morning!

Princess, your cub is leaving CL and mine will be heading that way shortly for his next duty assignment!  Guess I need to prepare for another deployment in the future!  :-(

  • Dan's Dad (John)

Dan's next duty station will be blueside too, Pax River Naval Air Base. He can't wait to leave CL.

Carol- get the next two Hunger Games, they were great. Carolyn and I read all three in a week. Can't wait until the next movie!

  • mikes mom

I love hearing Blue side ! Hmmmmmm she has her own seat ; )
  • MEsailormom

Leaving tomorrow for the treck to Camp Pendleton. A long way from the coast of Maine. We are all really excited! What were those Caarlsbad restaurants again?

  • mikes mom

Enjoy your journey : ) I hope you get some Cali sunshine  ..

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hey Betty!  Enjoyed the sunshine and worked in the yard.  It's very windy here today, but sunny and nice.

Ooh how I like Carlsbad!  Robin, these are in Carlsbad Village:   The sushi diner is Mikko's on Carlsbad Village Dr right by I-5; good value, sushi is 50% off when you dine in :) Mikko Sushi

Mexican:  Las Olas, right by the beach

Italian: Caldo Pomodoro on State Street (a little more $) - there are several good restaurants on this block in fact.

Also, find a Rubio's for lunch, they're all around and have the best fish tacos anywhere!!

There's a nice outdoor outlet mall in Carlsbad too if you want to do a little shopping, Barney's, Banana Republic, Michael Kors, Crate & Barrel, etc (and there's a Rubio's there! lol Can you tell I've been there?!)  Carlsbad Premium Outlets

  • MEsailormom

Carol won't your son be surprised! Thanks all for the suggestions. Can't wait. Need to hug that boy...er man.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Happy Tuesday!  Having my midday coffee break and rooting through my extensive tubetop collection in anticipation of upcoming toasting  :)  So much good stuff coming up!

"HOW TO SIMULATE LIFE IN THE NAVY"

    1. Buy a dumpster, paint it gray and live in it for 6 months straight.

    2. Run all of the piping and wires inside your house on the outside of the walls.

    3. Pump 10 inches of nasty, crappy water into your basement, then pump it out, clean up, and paint the basement "deck gray."

    4. Every couple of weeks, dress up in your best clothes and go the scummiest part of town, find the most run down, trashy bar you can, pay $10 per beer until you're hammered, then walk home in the freezing cold.

    5. Perform a weekly disassembly and inspection of your lawnmower.

    6. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays turn your water temperature up to 200 degrees, then on Tuesday and Thursday turn it down to 10 degrees. On Saturdays, and Sundays declare to your entire family that they used too much water during the week, so all showering is secured.

    7. Raise your bed to within 6 inches of the ceiling.

    8. Have your next door neighbor come over each day at 5am, and blow a whistle so loud that Helen Keller could hear it and shout "Reveille, Reveille, all hands heave out and trice up".

    9. Have your mother-in-law write down everything she's going to do the following day, then have her make you stand in the back yard at 6am and read it to you.

    10. Eat the raunchiest Mexican food you can find for three days straight, then lock yourself out of the bathroom for 12 hours, and hang a sign on the door that reads "Secured-contact OA division at X-3053."

    11. Submit a request form to your father-in-law, asking if it's OK for you to leave your house before 3pm.

    12. Invite 200 of your not-so-closest friends to come over, then board up all the windows and doors to your house for 6 months. After the 6 months is up, take down the boards, wave at your friends and family through the front window of your home...you can't leave until the next day you have duty.

    13. Shower with above-mentioned friends.

    14. Make your family qualify to operate all the appliances in your home (i.e., Dishwasher operator, blender technician, etc).

    15. Walk around your car for 4 hours checking the tire pressure every 15 minutes.

    16. Sit in your car and let it run for 4 hours before going anywhere. This is to ensure your engine is properly "lighted off."

    17. Empty all the garbage bins in your house, and sweep your driveway 3 times a day, whether they need it or not. (Now sweepers, start your brooms, clean sweep down fore and aft, empty all trashcans over the fantail).

    18. Repaint your entire house once a month.

    19. Cook all of your food blindfolded, groping for any spice and seasoning you can get your hands on.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

    Me too!!!  Priceless!

Happy Anniversary to C, isn't it amazing how the time zooms by? And yet we don't change a BIT!

Hey I'm watching CNN and news about the tornado that ripped through the Dallas area today, this video is so scary and more warnings for downtown Dallas.....Anna???????  Dallas tornado video

  • velvetlace

Thanks, Carol.   I borrowed it from another terrific Navy Mom.

    Is Anna O.K. in Texas?

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

    Thanks Carol!  Yikes.

  • Greg-and-Angela

    Carol,

Do you know a Cheryl in your blue star moms group with a Corpsman in the 1/7. She has a son deployed with mine. She is on the Marine web info page. Thought you might have connected, since she is a Colorado Blue star girl.

    Ruth,

I have not heard a word from C in ages. I hope he is getting better. Wish I could do the Tiger cruise.

  • Greg-and-Angela

    Betty

Give that Corpsman of yours a big high five and congratulate him for the new job from us!

  • MEsailormom

Hello this time from the other ocean! Carlsbad rental literally on the beach and just perfect. Sailor son so glad to see me but is a bit antsy sitting around as he has been since he joined the Navy. He will join us as he can. I reminded him you all tell me we are on Navy time now....he likes that I have all your knowledge and support! For the few who know of the troubles he had rest assure all is well. The guilty party was severely dressed down. And I mean severely. Son has been called for a 3 day field maneuver so I may have a little time with a book and the waves and the dolphins. Feels so great to be even nearby......and oh yes the sun and warmth is the frosting on the cake.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

So glad from you and to hear that! thanks ME :)

I've always wanted to take the train from that quaint station in Carlsbad to downtown San Diego, nice ride along the coastline plus avoiding the traffic on I-5, and it puts you right downtown within walking of the Midway etc, and the Cafe 222, great breakfast place that's been on the Food Network.

  • IDCmom#1

    MEsailormom,

I just read your message about the sun and warmth in Carlsbad being a plus.  I am still puttng the heater on every morning and wondering when Camp Pendleton is going to warm up.  That's the difference between being from Maine and Florida, obviously!  I have been stealing my son's warm socks to keep my feets warm since I mostly just brought sandals.

My granddaughter and I are going to tour the USNS Mercy this evening.  Really looking forward to seeing where my son will be living for five months.

  • MEsailormom

Marcy we are planning on taking the train into San Diego in the next few days. Depends on the Sailor's schedule as he has the wheels. Did Carlsbad thoroughly today on foot.

Carol unsuccessfully sought our your wisdom and support as I knew you would have had a strong opinion. We will catch up. All is well and that is what is important.

DocsMom...I am quite sure I would melt in Florida. This was one winter white body on the beach!

  • IDCmom#1

Will include this here and at the USNS Mercy group because it was so cool.

My granddaughter and I toured the Mercy this afternoon.  It was absolutely incredible and we only saw a quarter of the ship.  It is set up just like a hospital and when it is fully activated, it is the fourth largest trauma center in the US.  The have a gazillion (well, maybe not quite that many) portable x-ray machines, a CT scanner, 80 ventilators, 12 operating rooms, 1000 patient beds with 80 ICU beds.  It will have 1500 personnel onboard and is only 100 feet shorter than a carrier.  It will have two helicopters.  Has an overload ICU room filled with bikes for spinning.  Wonder where the funding for those came from?  Berthing was not very impressive.  I would feel claustrophobic in those bunkss. Also heard that last time out, some of them were flooded.  That would do something to my confidence.  Visited my son's sick bay that services all personnel (not the patients they bring on board) on the ship.  Five IDCs, two doctors, and not sure how many corpsmen for 1500 people.  Guess they won't be goofing off.  The LPO for Dept of Surgical Services, an HM1, was very impressive.  He came on board, with a chief, in December, and they have been busting their rears to get ready to leave.

  • MEsailormom

I am not sure he has stopped growing. I look short but I am not! Cheers from Carlsbad!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Betty that's so lovely and the feeling is mutual!!!  What a precious group of friends this is.

ME, you missed your opportunity, next time hop up on that chair behind you and assert yourself as #1!  And when it teeters in the sand your corpsman can patch you up.  Speaking of sand, say hello to the beach for me  :)

  • Jana

I just talked to my son for the last time before he flies to Naples, Italy tomorrow.  I can't believe that I will not be able to see him for 2 years, but hopefully if things go well, my daughter and I will be able to go visit him and Italy in the summer of 2013. I think that would be a good high school graduation present for her.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hi Jana!  Oof it's a long time to be sure...but what a fantastic place to visit and yes, quite the HS graduation present.  By then he'll be an expert guide!  We have some moms here with corpsmen in Naples, and there's an app for that N4M group for that too :) Sailors in Naples, Italy

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Thanks for the coffee & fritters Betty!  Just one problem, when I went to pour, this is what I found :)   Happy Easter weekend everyone!

  • IDCmom#1

MEmom, today was just how weather should be all year round!  75, sunny, with a little breeze.

We took the train from Oceanside to Old Towne, San Diego, today.  What a nice train and fun experience for son, granddaughter, and me.  Had a great margarita, and lunch, watched the dancing, walked in and out of shops, and had a nice conversation with the docent at an old hacienda on the square (he  was a former Marine and was saying something about being in the better sea going force.  When son told hime he was a corpsman, the guy immediately changed his tone.).  We were exhausted when we got home; granddaughter, who insisted she was not tired, passed out.  Son woke to a call from wife on the USS Sampson.  That was sure was a nice pre-Easter surprise for him and granddaughter.

For those considering the train ride in the future, it is $11 per adult (half that for senior or disabled) and under six is free.  Ride is a little under an hour with beautiful scenery.

  • MEsailormom

Marcy thanks for the tip off. I was actually on the Oceanside Pier for breakfast this morning! Have sent phone # to Docsmom to see if we can hook up. Spent the day sailing in San Diego on a 32' Catalina with friends. Took loads of pix of the Navy side of Coronado. Anybody have family trainng there? My son went back to attend a couple of good by parties...there sure must be a lot of those. He said it is always kind of sad.

  • IDCmom#1

Ruth, I should ship my husband to you when he retires later this year.  He loves to cut down trees.  Since Hurricane Erin and Opal in 1995, our not huge yard has lost 15 trees.  If the wind didn't knock them over, my husband insisted they were leaning too much this way or that.  We are down to only three large trees.

Carol, when we lived near Atsugi back in the 80s, we had to make regular trips there to pick up UHT milk because our, then toddler, daughter couldn't drink the "regular" milk as it had palm or coconut oil in it (I think that was the problem, it has been quite a few years!).  It was a nice adventure, shopping in the NEX instead of PX.

  • Dan's Dad (John)

Off to my sister's house for Easter dinner. My corpsman drove home for the weekend, partly to see us, partly to see his new gun...

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

John, that is too funny - ours is coming home next weekend to do the same.  Happy Ester.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Pretty sweet that we have two moms able to see their corpsmen in California this week!

Ok get your champagne or Martinelli's ready to toast, because HERE is our newest married corpsman and his beautiful bride!  What a great looking and very happy couple, Marsha you're a very fortunate mom :)

  • MEsailormom

Mini Mom meet up with DocsMom tomorrow. Loving San Diego and on lookout for blue Harley.
  • mikes mom

Yep Betty for his friend LOL : ) those two LOL

  • mikes mom

I Love those mini M&G especially when its Our Group : )

  • mikes mom

Yes, she was so nervous she started to cry and said does anybody have a tissue? Well I was sitting about 20" away and of course I had some tissue cuz I always cry at my sons weddings : ) and she took it .. Gosh you could just see the love...

  • IDCmom#1

What a beautiful bride and handsom groom.  I think sailors are so handsome in their blues.

I hate motorcycles and really hate them in California with them zooming down between cars.  I need to remember to be extra cautious when changing lanes.  I am so glad my son has outgrown motorcycle (started to say Jeeps but I think that has just been put on hold until he no longer needs a booster seat in the back seat!).

Looking forward to meeting Maine mom tomorrow.  She will be the second mom I have met and both have very distinctive regional accents.  New York for Gloria and Maine for Mainemom.  I am always surprised that the Connecticut Yankee I am married to does not have a New England accent although I think his family does.  My midwest cousins used to tell me that I have a southern accent but I don't hear it.  Just Heinz Variety from everywhere I have lived.

  • IDCmom#1

This morning, as I was dressing four year old granddaughter for preschool, she said, "Oma, I don't like it when you are whiny."  I told her that I am not whiny, I am bossy and she is whiny.  I plan to start a diary of our five month adventure when my son sails but thinking I better start it now.

  • Dan's Dad (John)

Carly got sick Friday, nice having the corpsman home to diagnose her. Dr. confirmed strep, but she and mom still made the road trip to North Carolina to visit ECU, my alma mater! I hope she's feeling better tomorrow for the tour.

Nice pictures Princess, congrats to the happy couple!

  • IDCmom#1

Just a little wrench thrown into MEsailormom and my lunch plans.  Looks like a four year old will be joining us.  Her daddy is at follow-up ortho appointment with her.  The two HNs who worked on her last night were very good with her.

  • IDCmom#1

Kathy, she was first patient of the day.  Doctor thinks it is a sprain and put another removable cast on it and said she can try walking on it when she wants.  Right now, she won't put her foot down.

Off to put MEsailormom's address in the GPS so we can go to lunch.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I love that photo!!!  Truly one of my favorites ever with our corpsmen.  Re having a four year old along, to me that sounds like a bonus!  Hope she feels the same lol

  • mikes mom

Awwww our men in BLUE : )

  • IDCmom#1

Didn't get lost on way to find MEsailormom.  What a nice lunch we had despite having a four year old along.  ME will make a wonderful grandmother one day.  When we dropped her off, my granddaughter asked why we weren't taking her home with us.

It really is a good experience to talk to other mothers in person and find out they have the same worries and pride you have in your child.

  • MEsailormom

Such a great time! Could have chatted for hours. Perhaps you should have left the panut with me for a slumber party. Sweet as honey. Picture will post when I figure out how from my phone.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

It truly is so special to meet up in person!  I'm so gad you two were able to get together.  if you like, you can text your pics to me and I'll post!!   :)

  • mikes mom

How special for the two of you .. Send Marcy the pics : )

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

OK gang, ready for a great big dose of midweek wonderful-ness?  Here's the pic from the California Girls meet-up!

  • IDCmom#1

Well, that picture might get me on my diet!  I'll start as soon as I finish these mini Hostess Cupcakes.  Lent was really long without chocolate.
