  • Ret. Navy & Mom

Hey everyone. I have a daughter in boot camp due to graduate Oct 8th and going to Pensacola on the 9th (Columbus Day weekend) and I have a few questions on how they are running things at Corry these days. I have read about the Phases and know she will not be able to leave base during the first phase. We would rather come see her down at Corry (much closer than GL) than go to her graduation and only be able to see her for a few hours ( Plus, she asked us to come to P'Cola instead). We would hopefully have more time to see her, bring her some of her stuff, and of course we have many friends down there. I guess my questions are will we be able to see her if only on base? I think I read somewhere that they sometimes house them over at NAS?? Will she have to do anything during that first weekend? Thanks for any help you can give me.
  • ctnRetired

For Ret Navy&Mom, current rule is that everyone coming to Corry as a new accession will be placed in Phase I liberty status for 10 days (on base only.) It's a tough one, because it is a 3-day weekend, there is a slight possibility that when she first checks in on Friday, she will be assigned to holding company, and may request leave for the weekend due to family being in the area. They MAY allow it, but normal policy is no off-base liberty or leave until they go to Phase II. Today is a bad day since it is the 15th of Sep all Chiefs are out busy today and tomorrow with the new selectees. I can't get ahold of anyone other than the NMT Qdeck folks who passed on the above info to me.
FYI - when I came to Corry for the first time in was also Columbus Day weekend (1985). I arrived on Friday, bought an airline ticket and spent the weekend in NY with my family. Hope it works out for you and your daughter!
  • Ret. Navy & Mom

    Thanks Fred!
  • linxs321

Hello All! I've been going over this site for quite some time now and find the information on here pretty useful. I'm about to go to CTN-A school here soon and was wondering if anyone who lives down there could tell me where I could find a good apartment? Thanks for your help!!!
  • linxs321

Yes I am cross rating again! I was an AT, now MA1 and soon to be CTN.
  • Craig

linxs321 - Over at NavyDep.com there is a user named xenocide that is going in as a CTN, he actually lives in Pensacola.

It's funny because he says he is tired of Pensacola and wants to get out of there. Being a CTN, you'll be in Pensacola alot if you make the Navy your career....
  • Ret. Navy & Mom

linxs321, also try the group "Sailors In Pensacola, FL For A School....Corry Station too!!" if you haven't already. There are some people in that group who have lived around Pensacola for some time who can probably help you.
  • linxs321

Thanks, I will give it a look. I've been in Pensacola but that was in 2001 and didn't have a family to bring with me at that time!
  • linxs321

You can go house hunting but on your own dime. My last 2 PCS moves, I've taken leave in transit and found/set up my house before checking into the command. A command can grant up to 10 days for house hunting.
  • ctnRetired

Not an official website, but you can get lot's of info at:
    http://pensacolanavalhousing.com/
There are plenty of apartments and houses to rent in Pensacola. Ensure to stop by the housing office just inside the front gate at NAS Pensacola (2 miles down the road from Corry Station). They will have the latest info on approved apartments for navy personnel. There are some low-rent apt complexes near the base that I would not consider suitable for families. Stay away. Plenty to choose from that are only 15-30 minutes from the base. Housing will have the complete listing.
  • Craig

clockard - Here is the offical instruction of Permissive TAD for Housing Hunting....
    http://www.npc.navy.mil/ReferenceLibrary/MILPERSMAN/1000MilitaryPer...
  • linxs321

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the countrywood at blue angel apartment complex, it looks descent...Looks like I'll try to get TDY orders for house hunting and check out the area before I start school. Should be interesting to fly trans atlantic 2 times in a 1 month period.
  • ctnRetired

That's not a bad location. I live about 4 miles from there. It is only about 10-15 minute drive to Corry. If you have school age children, make sure to check the correct zoning for that area ( I think you said you had a family or implied that you do). I checked a website but it is not accurate. I think the Elementary school for that location is Blue Angel Elementary which is pretty good. Middle school is Bailey which is good too. That zip is also for Warrington Elem and Middle which aren't that great...so check first before you sign on the dotted line!
  • linxs321

My son is only 2 so I don't have to worry about schools, just parks! Just looking for something close to base without living in bad parts. I heard outside of Corry is pretty bad and a buddy of mine that just came from Pensacola recommended fairfield village but I can only find fairfield lakes. I will contact the housing office this week to see if they can give me more info plus I should be getting my hard copy orders this week too.
  • ctnRetired

linxs321 - it's probably Fairfield Villas, but I wouldn't recommend anything off of Fairfield Drive. Lot's of problems at all the apts down that way.
  • Deena/SHIP 06 DIV 944

    Thankyou clockard
  • CTmomof3

My Son is going to MEPS next tueday and wants the CTN rate but his recruiter told him that he doesnt know of anyone going from BC into CTN that you have to 'transfer" into it. I don't think that's true is it? My feeling is the recruiter is uninformed,
  • Deena/SHIP 06 DIV 944

The recruiter is wrong as of 2007 I believe, your son can go directly into CTN. My daughter did and is there right now.
  • ge3kswagTony

CTmomof3, that recruiter is absolutely misinformed. I enlisted not too long ago and got CTN. From what I know the CTN rate for the most part is still a undermanned rate, this means as long as you qualify and it's open......you can get it. I went through 5 recruiters before I found one who even knew what a CTN was and some even thought CTA was still an active rate.

Also, October is the start of the new Navy fiscal year so more rates will have openings and I'm almost sure CTN will be one. If not, and your son really wants CTN and isn't in a rush, he can go back...hope that helps
  • CTmomof3

Oh thanks for the info. I told him not to believe what the recruiters say. He said that if that rate isn't open he will have to choose something else... My advice to him was NOWAY tell them you'll wait till it opens up. He's a quiet kid so I hope he listens to his Mom and Dad on this one. Didn't know out the fiscal year thing as to rates opening. That's good to know...not to doubt you but are you sure about that?
  • ge3kswagTony

CTmomof3 tell your son to check out www.navydep.com it has a lot of info about the rate and will help him through the process. There is a user on there xeno and myself are both going in as CTN's and Craig ( the resident CT expert ) pretty much runs the site.

Make sure you stress to him the importance of sticking to his guns and getting the rate he wants...
  • CTmomof3

Thanks ge3kswagTony...Oh Craigs on both sites? I'll tell my son to go to the dep site. He needs all the info he can get. His brother is a CTR but he's very hard to get a hold of. I do stress that but ya know I'm only Mom what do I know Lol Are CTN only shore based?
  • ge3kswagTony

From what i gather the CTN rate is about 90-95% shore duty but of course it's always also the " Needs of the Navy " so you never really know.
  • CTmomof3

LtTXsmarty 09/128 Oh gosh the same thing has happened to my son They wanted him in the Nuke program but nope he's color blind so he's choosing CTN. But the recruiters claim they have never had anyone go directly into that. So no issues yet just trying to prevent them at the moment.
  • Craig

Woo-hoo..... I love a good debate. It's actually kind of fun....

I truly don't mind if someone in another rating leading their people down the wrong path, but you don't do to our CTN's (and now CTT's). I really want those CTN women to come here and join this group. It has everything you need here.
Friendly, fun, lots of answers..... Woo-hoo....

My son just went to the Fort last week for a TAD trip. So he stopped by town going and coming. It was really fun having him home for 36 hours. He's coming up on orders really soon....I hope he gets the Fort....

btw: Do you think I should change my avatar to this?

  • ge3kswagTony

Lol hahahah Craig... that is totally you.
  • CTmomof3

Oh no you two got the booted. Tell me where to go and I'll pass the word
  • Craig

Clockard - Did you get booted too? Man that is too funny if you did.....
Woo-hoo.... I need to start reading my book again:

  • Craig

CTmomof3 - Don't think that he will change to CTN once he accept his orders. Yes, the can do a DAR request, but it rarely happens. My nephew wanted CTN so bad. He was in DEP for 8 months as a CTT, and he is now in CTT "A" school.

He needs to decide now, if he doesn't get CTN, what other ratings will he do. Remember the economy really is bad out here, so if anything is within the ballpark, then they should take it.....
  • Craig

CTmomof3 - Sorry, I thought I pushed send to respond with my commen, but I don't think it went.... Probably because the computers overloaded with being banned....-ha

Anyways.... My nephew wanted CTN really bad. But all they had in the CT field at the time was CTT. They kept telling him that they will put in a DAR request each month, to change to CTN. He was in DEP for 9 months, and guess what, it never changed. He PIR 9/2 and is now at P-cola doing the CTT thing. Which, don't get me wrong, CTT is awesome too, but not as awesome at CTN. CTN is where it's at!
So, what your son needs to remember is this: The economy sucks now. He needs to decide what other ratings he would wants besides CTN. Being a CT, I am really partial to CT's. CTT, CTR are great jobs. I was a CTM, it's great. CTI you need to have that skill, and I don't. So what I would do is tell him to go in there and open up and say, "I will take ANY CT job, but I really want to be a CTN." That way they know he isn't "Job-locked". If your job-locked then they will show you the door, since sooo many people want to go into the Navy now.
Job-locked means you will only take one certain rating.

He should be getting idea now of what else he will choose. I want him to have an idea on what the various jobs do, I have temporary opened up my website for you. Just have him scroll about half way down until he see's the RATINGS (JOBS). They should all be in there. I'm only missing a few.
He doesn't need to register, this section I just opened up so he can view it without registering.... http://www.navydep.com/forums/

Let me know if you need any more info, it's not like I can hang out in the Pensacola section....-ha
  • Craig

This is what you'll hear next...

    clockard & Craig
    vs
    The Pensacola group....

  • Craig

CTmomof3 - Man, I totally misread your post. Sorry about that. But that recruiter doesn't know what he's talking about. The CTN rating came about in 2004 and they only took people from ratings to cross-rate into it. Then, on Feb 26, 2007 they started the very first class of CTN's. These young sailors are the 1st to be recruited and start the entire path to be CTN's.
    http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=28110

The recruiter must be from a real old era. He is out of date.

clockard - Come on, we would be a good tag team. I'll do the "Pile Driver" and you can do the "Figure 4 leg lock"... -ha
p.s. I bet you missed my links huh? -ha
  • linxs321

Just to put my 2 cents in; recruiters always try to push new recruits into rates that they need to fill their quotas for. He could always talk to someone else on his first trip to MEPs for his physical or go to another recruiting station.
  • CTmomof3

Thanks everyone for the info. That's ok Craig I knew you'd catch up on the question.. He took the practice ASVAB 2 weeks ago and now going to take the "real" one and do the physical stuff etc next Tues. I and his Dad also told him to...stick to your guns... don't let them tell you to just pick something etc etc. His dad gave him all kinds of advice on how recruiters work and several co-workers were listening to the conversation shaking their head in agreement... his Dad works for the joint staff at the pentagon so you can figure out who his coworkers are. I did ask my son if the rate he wants isn't available what will he do he needs to start thinking about that. He'll try CTN or CTR...
On the color blind? I knew he was colorblind since he was young but get this one..the recruiter had him take a colorblind test on GOOGLE What??? I said. ya mom told he went on google and tested me..,Well, that's a new one.
Craig im going to give him your link to look at.. I go by you can't have too much information..and he has some good resources. here you all are fantastic
  • Deena/SHIP 06 DIV 944

You guys are too funny! I love it. I am thinking I found the right group.....just don't tell pcola they may boot me too!
  • Craig

Just to give you a background on "patch". Beleive it or not, the first time it was ever published was on July 13th, at 12:52..on this CTN forum.

Knowing that CTN's didn't have a logo since they were brand new, I wanted to get something out there for them. My friend actually drew that up, but it was orginally for our group at work. It orginally had "CTO" which stood for C=Contractor, T=TRW, O=Operations. I liked it so much I ask him if I have it for my website. So, I doctored the master up, and changed it to CTN and added the CT quill and lighting bolt.
I truly wanted our guys to have something. Not having a logo is not being a sailor. It's funny how it's made it's way around.... Please keep passing it along...
"and know you know the rest of the story"
  • Craig

clockard - The one that assigns rating is the "Classifier". They are usually the NCC rating.

CTmomof3 - You should tell your son that his family background is "CT''s. If he accept anything other than a CT rating he will get a foot in his @ss (kind of like the book 3 pages ago). Beleive me, legacy in the military is something to be proud of. If you would break that in my family, then I'd be really ticked.

We have the same pride as nukes, maybe even more. At least we don't do stupid crap like nukes. Did you see the recent bootcamp video where they accidently put a nuke in with the special ops guys? Here it is....Can you spot the nuke?

  • Craig

Deena - if you are not easily offended, and like "off the wall discussions", you may want to look at the "Chicken Ship" forums. I started it about 14 days ago, and it already has 215 pages of posts.
The thread is truly about nothing. Just people having a goodtime talking. I go there, then here to the CTN section, then to my websites and just make a big loop.

But again, it's not for the faint of heart, if your easily offended, it's not the place to be.
Here's the link if you dare.... http://www.navyformoms.com/group/usschickenshipavastrowdymateysbela...
  • ge3kswagTony

Craig - Do you know if they have released a new CTN info sheet?? The one I keep finding still reflects A and C school. Thx
  • Craig

Nukes and CT's are like a brother/sister relationship. They think CT's are wierd, and we thing the same (that we are wierd). Wait, that's not what I meant.... We think they are wierd... It all start when they wore the TI-40 calucalators on the belts in "A" school, and so did we.... but that was in Orlando, years ago....
  • CTmomof3

My husband has a question on the CTN rate. Do you know if you can progress easily? I know of people in other rates that even though they pass the test you can't progress because there are no openings. Since CTN is rather new any info on this.

Craig, I think my son did go on the Navydep site. I found the note i left him next to the computer. He's at work now so I can't ask.
  • ge3kswagTony

CTmomof3, I would say CTN has one of the best advancements...right after Nukes. If you look at the latest CREO which is used more for re-enlistment shows E1-E5 on the CTN rate as 1, which means undermanned. Great chance for advancement and really good opportunities when he gets out.
  • ge3kswagTony

Will your son be going in as an E1, E2 or E3?? Also, does your son have any technical training/certs or schooling...if so tell him to look into the DPEP. Craig told me about it and that next Monday i submitted by packet so, if it's approved, when i graduate from JCAC i'll be an E5..hopefully
  • CTmomof3

Oh good to know clockard..So they did the E5 test already? Funny you mention that as I just got off the phone with my husband and he mentioned he thought my other son had or was about to test for E5.
    . What's DPEP and JCAC?
  • Craig

Tony - Glad to see you put in for the DPEP program. You can actually be an E6, depending on which rating. Again, this is one of those programs that is out there that people rarely know about. I hope you get E5.

CTmomof3 - The CTN is 100% to the E5 level forever.....Here is the quotos
    http://www.navytimes.com/projects/careers/navy/e4toe6quotas/2010/

I know this is kind of hard to read, but scroll down to CTN...
    E6
    CTN
65 = The # of people passing the test
30 = Is the # of posistion that can be advanced. (ie just because you passed doesn't mean you get advanced)
46.15% = Is the percentage of those getting advanced (65/30) (for the current 207 cycle)
40 = The number of people being advance during the Sep 09 test (204 cycle)
42.11% = The percentage that got advanced.
And it continues across to the E5, then the E4's...
As you can see E5 and E4 are 100%. If you take the test, you will be advanced.
  • Craig

CTmomof3 - If you have experiece you can actually come into the Navy in a high rate. E6 is the max. It's really hard to explain, it's easier for you just to look.
    Go here: http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/publications/Directives/1130_8H_VOL%20IV_P...

Look starting at page 171. It explains it all....
  • sarahw1961

It's been a week or so since I've been on here - and man o man did I miss some excitement it seems! What exactly do you have to do to get kicked off a group? Just asking....

And Craig I totally agree with you on the E6 thing - Jeremy passed the test and waited about 6-8 months for an opening....kind of bummed him out - so excited he passed the test then having to wait....but I'm sure he had a lot more patience than I ever will!

And I have learned an important lesson - don't stay off of here for too long or you'll miss it all!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week - we've had absolutely beautiful weather this week - we're actually having 'fall like' weather in N. Texas. Unheard of!

No I think I'll head over to the Pensacola group and see what's happening - has to be boring compared to here though......
  • sarahw1961

You know - I just don't get the negative people and/or negative comments! Isn't this a place to support each other? Call me crazy (won't be the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th etc time) but if you can't be supportive you shouldn't be here in the 1st place!

Wow - on my soapbox 2 days in a row - Facebook yesterday, here today.....I'll have to warn my husband I guess...

And I never said in my previous comment - I LOVE the CTN patch! I have already emailed it to my son and now I'm headed to look at the links that are on here for other Navy stuff. I would love to find the Navy sweats - absolutely love them & have totally worn out 2 pair of sweat pants already. (had to "borrow" 1 pair from my son!)

Clockard & Craig - keep on doing what you're doing - there are obviously more of us grateful & appreciative of you than those that are not.....

This is the only official CTN logo. There were some other logos going around back in 2004 when the rating was established, but this is the official logo approved by NAVNETWARCOM leadership. There are coins floating around that Sailors will get through the career. The CTN coin has this logo on it.
