  • Yami.Brooke

  • Tricia

Well I finally heard from my son he was asking me was any one else was meeting the ship like I said it is coming in july don't just the date is missing ship been out since january
  • Tricia

are any of your people on the enterperise and coming in on the for july
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hi Tricia, there is also an Enterprise group on N4M to join & remember keep OPSEC in mind, mentioning dates is a no-no here for everyone's safety :)
  • Brogan

Please keep OPSEC issues in mind. Do not discuss dates of any kind. Just because this is a navy support site does not mean that we are safe to discuss specific military information. Anyone can get on this site and anyone can read this information. Keep discussions and questions general and broad and ask someone to personally message you if you need any specific info. Thanks ladies!
  • Tricia

Ladies I thank you all for the infor about the tiger cruise I enjoy you all talking about your boys and girls Iam glad I join you all and can share things I thank you all
  • ChrisyDVM(Chris'sMom)

I ordered a Blue Star Service Flag last week and received and hung in my front window on Sat. I heard about it on N4M but don't remember what group. I love it! Also ordered a necklace, You spouses may already know about the flag and I've heard you're discouraged from displaying anything that would tip thieves off that you're the wife of a sailor and may be alone. So sad that our society is so cruel. For those who have never heard of it you can go to www.bluestarmothers.org and read about the history and to www.serviceflags.com to see the available merchandise
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Never heard that Christy.  Seems to me, a Blue Star Mom would be the one I wouldn't want to tangle with!  :)  Mine's been in the window beside my front door for a while now.
  • Kac46047

Hi ladies does anyone have any opinions on Kings Grant Landing Apartments in Virginia beach? they have great rating and accept large dogs soo its looking pretty perfect
  • joyce

my blue star hangs in his old bedroom window. our navy flag hangs off an awning and our american flag hangs off the house. We try to do our part

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

If you're in Portsmouth, stay in the Olde Towne area.  The Myrtles is great.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Just sent you a PM with some pics :)

Hi, I need a little help. Is there a web site that my son or I could buy study manuals he needs for promotion. He dozen't want to down load books he wants to refer to a manuals.I've looked on line with no success.  LOL
  • Mrs.AndreaD

Hi all :) I'm new to Norfolk and would really love to be able to meet some other wives.  Coffee anyone?  I'm in the Kempsville area, but willing to travel a bit :).  I'd love to be able to get a couple girls together sometime.
  • katofmt

Ben's Mrs- Those are on different sides of the base, so if you have a choice pick the one closest to your husband's work.  We didn't have a choice, but our home is the furthest possible place from my husband's work and he hates being so far.
  • Mrs.AndreaD

I don't know how it works, but I know petty officers who've been in for less than a year. I guess that rule doesn't apply across the board...
  • Grasshopper

For those talking about promotions to E4.  Passing the exam does not guarantee promotion and it does not matter just about your time in.  Lots of things are considered.  They receive points and passing the exam is one of them.  They also receive points if they have been recommended for "EP" (early promotion).  Then as someone else mentioned there must be openings in their classification.  In other words my son is a MA.  Last year they didn't have many openings to promote. It seems that some have retired or left the Navy because he said this year quite a few MA's that passed the exam got promoted.  He said some jobs are easier and have higher percentages of promotions.  It is all very complicated but tell your Sailor to keep trying!!!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Grasshopper, you're right on all counts.  With the economy as it is, the retention rate is high and openings for advancement fewer.  Some rates are so overmanned that they're downsizing them.

Sailors prep for the advancement test by getting the bibliography for the upcoming test and studying, and can log into the Navy Advancement Center website NAC website. NAC has a Facebook page as well. Nancy's navybmr.com is a great site.  If you Google "flashcards Navy advancement" you see options for those.

They need to score well on their evals too, they will know what it takes there.  You can also go back to your recruiting office and ask them for any tips and tricks they may know of for you to pass on to your sailor.  Our recruiters have been very helpful to their sailors :)

Does anyone know if there are fireworks on base on the 4th? Thank you!
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Downtown Norfolk has a big fireworks show on the 4th on the Elizabeth River.  I saw it last year from the Spirit of Independence out of Portsmouth and it was fantastic.  I don't think there was one on base and that may be why.  This link has info, scroll down to July Norfolk events calendar

Spirit of Independence You can take the $1.50 ferry from Norfolk's Waterside across the Elizabeth to Portsmouth, the ferry puts you right where the S of I picks you up.

  • NukeWife

    Thanks for the info!
  • Tricia

Well it is july now and I will start my count down now my son will be heading back to base from the ship I cant to see him I miss my son and only son
  • rredcars

Hi my son will be joining a ship soon and someone told him about using a sleeping bag aboard ship.  A regular sleeping bag is not allowed, needs to  be cotton?

Does anyone know the rules or perhaps where to get one ?  Thanks

  • ckmom

My son never told me he needed a sleeping bag I'm sure he just went and bought one.  He really never tells me if there anything he needs. Only when it is something like his cell phone broke and needed a new one NOW!  He's so funny like I can get it to him that fast.  I WISH !!
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I'm wondering if they're using as extra cushioning to sleep on? And can be a cover, too. My son bought a thin pad at Walmart to go on top of the mattress; the racks are so narrow you can't add much height. Anything they use has to be flame retardant.
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

ladies, it's not so much that they need a sleeping bag but it's very cold in the berthing and from what my daughter said the mattress' aren't very soft.  she bought a foam pad and a comforter for her bunk but one of my "other" daughters has my coleman sleeping bag (which happens to be cotton)

Good morning: hope everyone has a Happy 4th,thinking of our troops, and my son in Virginia. Hope you have good weather there and have a nice BBQ(if your off) and to all Navy Moms..
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Happy Fourth!  This was posted this morning on FB by Naval Medical Center Portsmouth:
Organizers are combining the rained-out Harborfest fireworks with the 4th of July fireworks for a massive display over the harbor! Bring the family to NMCP for the best viewing around. Guests without ID must have a sponsor to get on base. MWR will have a booth by Bldg. 3 selling hotdogs and hamburgers, chips and drinks from 6:30pm until fireworks begin at 9:30.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

NMCP is 12 miles from Norfolk Naval Station, btw :)  Hampton Blvd to the Midtown Tunnel, bear left onto 58 West, take the London Blvd exit towards downtown Portsmouth (east), left on Effingham to the NMCP entrance.
  • ChrisyDVM(Chris'sMom)

Becky, I too came across mybluestarflag.com on the freebie group after I'd already ordered mine. I ordered a free one also though and plan to give it to my parents! You can't personalize the free one, but that's ok; my parents will love it!

Marcy, I'd only heard from a Navy wife that it's not recommended for the spouses to hang one as it can serve as a signal to thieves and she has hers hanging on the inside of their home. It shouldn't be a pb for other family members, though; most parents and other relatives don't live near their sailor's base or even if they do live in the same port city it wouldn't take too much scouting by a thief to figure out it's not the alone navy spouse living there.

I have a question about military housing, do they jsut put you anywhere thats open or do they take request if their able?? Its only my husband and I, so we know we will be only be eligable for a 2br, we were looking at a certain community around some friends but didnt know if were getting our hopes up to early
  • Rod

Yeah, we have the same type of questions.  Also, any info on which units are better than others.  I believe all the housing is privatized, but fits within in the BAH allowances including basic utilities.  My son will be reporting to the IKE in January.
  • NukeWife

@ Kac46047 you are able to request where you want to live for housing, because you and your husband are limited to 2 beedroms it makes your housing options smaller. My husband and I also were only able to have a 2 bedroom. We requested Willoughby bay and got it. They have a short waiting list about 1-3 months. If you have any questions you can send me a message.

  • Jess_0411

Blessedsailorsmom: My husband is on the Ike. There is a group on here (Uss Dwight D Eisnehower) for anyone that has a sailor on that ship.
  • CCity

    Hi Everyone!

My husband currently just dropped Rescue Swimming and he is now being relocated to Nortfolk and I was wondering if anyone can give me any information for there. We are moving in about a month or less so I do not have a lot of time to get everything does. I was wondering about information on the town, apartments near the base, and day cares. I really want to get a job there and i need to know what all to do to get my son in daycare on the base.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hi CCity!  You can also post your questions in this group N4M Ladies of VA, there are a lot of wives on that group; and ask Norfolk wives in the group PCSing/Moving.  You'll find info in all the Discussions, too.  Best of luck, it's a great area with tons to do!  :)
  • blessedsailorsmom ship12div 039

Jess 0411 I tried looking that group up... can't find it. do u have a link ?
  • Jess_0411

Normally I could give you the link, however, I'm currently on my phone, so there is not any way that I'm aware of me being able to copy the link. However, the group name is USS Eisenhower-Ike Family.
