Raining "cats and dogs" in Norfolk......
  • joyce

Chris said not bad. Rain and wind. Hanging in the barracks with other sailors. Not real worried he is on the third floor. Said he has food water and beer. Told him I was glad he put it in that order. He said he did that just for me. Im sure beer really comes first. LOL  We are in NY waiting for this storm to approach. Be safe all
  • Sue(Daniel's Mom)

Just talked with my son and he said it was raining cats and dogs.  Also said they have just about as many animals in the house with them as they do people. Four people, four dogs and soon to be two cats. He said he would call later to let us know how the storm is progressing.  Of course we are glued to the Weather Channel.  Just wish the Weather Channel would give us a little more info about Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Keep praying and be safe.

My son is off today and tomorrow so he is staying close to home and hanging out with other sailors. so he not alone.

@Jane ~ I see you're in OP.  I'm originally from Hays and used to live in OP (119th and Metcalf area).  My step-son and his wife used to live in Olathe but they bought a house and moved to the Waldo (KC, MO) area about 1 1/2 years ago.  My son is on the USS Enterprise.  I hope your daughter stays safe and your SIL has a safe and uneventful trip back to Kansas (a/k/a 'the land of OZ" or "ahhhs")!
  • Sue(Daniel's Mom)

Talked to Daniel around 12 noon and he said the passenger glass on the back door of his 4-Runner was knocked out by something.  I hate this for him but at least is safe for the moment. All of this from wind and rain - just think the hurricane hasn't gotten there yet. cshore glad Max and Dom are ok.  Keep us posted.
  • soonergirl99 12/159~5/6/11~Big E

Did anyone see the streaker in the broadcast from VA Beach (two broadcasts ago)?  After the coverage switched back to the control room in Atlanta some of the workers in the background were laughing and pointing at a monitor.  Really STUPID for so many people to be out and about during a hurricane.

@Sue ~ sorry Daniel's 4-Runner was damaged.  Hopefully it won't receive additional damage.

Saying a prayer for everyone in the Norfolk area. I live in Wilmington NC Irene came thru here last night and early this morning. Everything here is fine we have about 80,000 people without power but thank goodness I am not one of them. My son is aboard the USS Leyte Gulf and they are out to sea and just got word that everyone is safe and sound. Everyone stay safe.

  • joyce

  • Sue(Daniel's Mom)

Thank God this is past Norfolk.  Talked with Daniel and he is good. They never loss power and minimal damage to his 4-Runner.  Have already contacted the insurance company and they have a tentative schedule to fix the broken truck window tomorrow.  Hope all of you have heard from you sailors and that all is well with them. Daniel said he will report on Tuesday morning at 5:30 am. Thanks to all of you for being here during this tough time.  May God continue to bless you and yours.

@Sandra AM Mom ~ I am actually in the Dallas area but lived in the Edmond area until 4 years ago. Hubby and I moved to DFW for his job in the Summer of 2007. My son stayed with his dad in Edmond when we moved to Dallas so he could finish high school there. He went to school in Edmond from K-12 and graduated from Edmond North in 2009 and attended UCO during the 2009-2010 school year. My mother-in-law lives in Bethany and my sister-in-law lives in Mustang so we're in the OKC quite a bit. I'm a huge Sooner fan (as evidenced by my screen name). My son is stationed on the Enterprise. Where do you live in OK?
  • soonergirl99 12/159~5/6/11~Big E

I just talked to B. He was standing on the flight deck of the Enterprise and he said the sun is shining and the wind is finally gone. He is getting ready to catch a cab to downtown Norfolk to get his car. I've been worried about car being vandalized so I asked him to send me a text when he gets to downtown Norfolk so I know he made it safely and that the car is okay.

Continued prayers for those still in the path of this storm.
  • TexasMomof2

My son is back at his apartment in Virginia Beach after spending Friday night thru this morning in Norfolk.  He says there isn't any damage......nor flooding.  They are without power.  But he says it's one of the most beautiful days he's ever seen.
  • soonergirl99 12/159~5/6/11~Big E

B sent me a text saying he picked up his car from the parking garage in downtown Norfolk.  No damage (storm or vandalism) and it was free parking ~ yeah!  He is currently at the Norfolk mall so they are open for business as usual today.
  • navy25

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Hello everyone!!  My son got orders to Dam Neck for (C)school. Does anyone know if there is a Dam Neck VA group on NFMs.  He is an FC.

I am glad everything is back to normal after Hurricane Irene swept through.

My son was concerned that there was lots of damage and that his orders would be changed, LoL.

  • Sandy's_sailor son

navy25, we are in Colorado but all of my relatives on my Mom's side of the family are in New Jersey. I hope they are ok. I heard yesterday that there was lots of flooding and damage.
  • Grasshopper

Hi Sandy...Welcome to the Norfolk group.  I don't think there is a Dam Neck group.  Since Dam Neck and Little Creek are fairly small bases, I think Norfolk just sort of includes all the bases of that Area.  They are all so close together up there.  My son is at Norfolk but we have a cousin at Little Creek.  Takes them about 15 to 20 minutes to visit each other.  My son's recruiter who is now good friends with is now at Oceanna is only about 10 to 15 minutes away.  Then there are also the shipyards like Portsmouth that are nearby as well.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Thank you Grasshopper, Dam Neck is even closer than I thought to Norfolk. I had pictured them being about 40 minutes away.  Google maps can be very deceiving.
  • Sugar02

For those of you that have stayed at the Norfolk Navy Lodge, did you have to have your sailor with you whenever you wanted to leave the base?
  • Sugar02

Rhonda - thanks for the clarification.  But I do need to have him with me when I check in, right?

  • navy25

Hi Sandy what area are your relatives in.The areas affected bad were by the shore and those that live by rivers like Lodi- Nutley-Fairfield-Wayne-I live by the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel so we had no problems we dodged a bullet.I hope your family is fine.My Sailor is heading to Norfolk in Sept as well
  • navy25

Anyone on here by the Charleston NC area if affected by Hurricane especially by the airport there
  • Grasshopper

I have lived in NC all my life and I'm not familiar with a Charleston, NC.  There is a Charleston, SC...do you possibly mean that?  It's further south than our beaches and they were not affected by the hurrincane this time.  We do have a Charlotte, NC which has a large airport.  Charlotte is further inland and again, suffered no damages from Irene.  I hope this helps you.
  • navy25

Ooops  sorry I read it wrong its Charlotte Airport NC
  • Grasshopper

That's okay...lol!  Charlotte did not suffer any problems from Irene.  It's far enough inland and to the west from where Irene came ashore that they were spared this time.  They have had their share in the past though with a hurricane once many years ago named Hugo!  Hugo went all the way to our NC Mountains!!

  • navy25

Yes Thank you Grasshopper is that my son has to make a stop there before heading to his base in Norfolk how about you did you suffer any problems due to the Hurricane
  • navy25

Grasshopper how about your area any problems
  • Grasshopper

Thanks for asking.  No, we had rain and wind gusts and some debris in our yard but nothing bad. Just to the East of us though, like 45 minutes away, had it a lot worse.  Power outages, trees down and flooding.  Your son should be just fine getting back to Norfolk.  I think all the airports are clear down here! :)
  • navy25

Good Im glad all is well by you and thank you for the info.Is your Sailor in Norfolk
  • Grasshopper

Yes, I have a son that's an MA stationed in Norfolk  He's on shore side and had to ride out the storm on base.  He called us Saturday afternoon and said it was pretty wild up there.  They were all in an open barrack sort of like back in boot camp.  The winds were really howling but they were fine.  He got there Friday at 3:00 and was finally able to go home yesterday morning around 9:30 to catch some sleep so he could be back at work for his regular night shift last night.  I know he's exhausted so I have not tried calling him yet today but will probably try talking to him later this evening as he's off today and tomorrow.
  • Grasshopper

Francine...So sorry!! I know it's tough saying good bye! Glad you got a little extra time with him though!! Hang in there!!
  • Sandy's_sailor son

I have a friend whose son is at Norfolk. Her son said that it was not flooded and all is well. He was concerned about his car to, LoL
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Francine, I agree. It seems like every-time my son comes home on leave, it is so hard to say goodbye. My son just left this Thursday and I cried my eyes out after we said goodbye at the Airport.  I explained to my son that I am very proud and happy for him. It is just that saying goodby is hard for me.

I can't wait to see my son again at Christmas.

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Pat, thank you for your advice. You are right. I should try not to cry in-front of my son. I have to think about something to focus my mind on so that I don't.

Don't be surprised if you son changes his mind. My son goes back and forth on whether or not to re-enlist, LoL.  Every-time he hears about the cuts that our government is trying to make on Military retirement. He wants to leave. Then the next day he wants to stay for 20 years.

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Hi mamabeth. Long time no talk to, LoL.  nice to see you here. We need to learn a lot about the Norfolk/Dam Neck area.
  • Philip

My son turns 21 today on the USS Cole!!

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Francine, I just wanted to know if Dam Neck has Liberty Phases like Great Lakes. Also, is it easy to get around Dam Neck base with out a car. My son is planning on picking up just a cheap clunker to drive. He will have to save his money for that.

I wonder how big Dam Neck is compared to Great Lakes?

Is there public transportation outside of the base or do Sailors have to use cabs?

I am sure I will have more questions as time goes on. I know that when my son gets to Dam Neck, he will have lots of questions too, LoL

Happy 21st Birthday Phillips Sailor Son.

Are you not suppose to get sick in the Navy?  My sailor has been very sick with a bad bacteria.  In and out of ER and medical.     My sailor is being pressured by the instructors at school.  I'm disappointed with this.  What can be done..
  • Sandy's_sailor son

dancer, where is your son going to (A)school??  If it is Great Lakes then I know someone who could give you some good advice to pass onto your Sailor.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

(even if your Sailor is not at Great Lakes this person could still help) Friend me so I can send you a personal message.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Thank you Carol. I'm a member of the AECF FC ET group. They are a great group of ladies.
  • Grasshopper

Sandy...not sure how "C" School works at Dam Neck but it is a small base.  Nothing like Great Lakes or Norfolk.  My guess is that your son will have Liberty Phases and even though Dam Neck is a small base the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area is HUGE!!! Oh yeah, and peope drive crazy in Norfolk!

  • Grasshopper

Francine...your Son will need to talk to his Chain of Command.  My son has had 2 speeding tickets coming home on weekends.  Both in VA but not in Norfolk.  Both times he had to wear his Dress Uniform to court and someone higher ranking than him had to go with him.  Once the charge was dismissed and the other it was reduced.  Either way, your son's Chain of Command should know what to do.  They are pretty used to our Sailors getting these tickets...unfortunately!  Good Luck!
