I know another time, he had to take a cab to NewportNews airport (again, another early morning) and it was about $30 to that airport.  Thanks, everyone!

What a wonderful thing you do for our sailors.  It will seem so different not to have him with us forT-giving.  We are going to try to drive out for Christmas.  It will be 10 hrs at least and we have never been to that area of the country.  Hope weather is good.  Told my son about T-giving with you and he seemed excited and told me to find out how to get in touch with you.  If you could provide that info that would be great.  Thanks

    Hello all

Does anyone have any helpful info at all in regards to going to Norfolk for Christmas?  Good places to stay....Navy base?  What is in the area.  What we might do or where we could hang out as a family.  There are 4 of us and 5 if my mother comes along.  Any info would be so helpful as we have never been to that part of hte country.  Thanks in advance

Hmmm.....I don't think he can do that, Barbara.  He has FL insurance...very strict.  No one under 25 can drive his car...and I don't think he would want them to.  Very particular about his car!  Plus, he may be coming back when that person is on leave himself.  But thanks for the idea!

  • diannep

Wow, Becky.  How sad...hadn't heard that.

  • Connie(Memphis Belle)

diannep-hey honey!!!! haven't been on this group much. i don't know any thing about the area but i was just looking at the map.  if your Sailor parked his car at the secured parking area at the back gate @ Norfolk and called a cab from there could that work for him?  the guy who runs the lot is an old Navy guy "Bill" and i got his phone number off the internet 757 445-1492 and talked to him before my Sailor was deployed.

  • diannep

Hey, Connie!  Good to see you on here.  Thanks for the info. Is this a lot for cars of those deployed?  Hmmm....only thing is the early hour he is leaving...must be on his way by 5:30 at the latest...doubt that man would be there then.

I'm thinking that just getting a cab from Newport News will work out...just was wondering if one cab service was better than another.

Thanks though!  Sure do appreciate the info!  We need to private message soon!  Want to catch up with you!

  • Connie(Memphis Belle)

diannep-yes that is the same lot.  i "thought" it was manned 24/7 but i am not sure of this.  your Sailor coming home for the Holidays...WOO HOO!!

  • paybacks398

My grandson called earlier today-he is being deployed Monday so he will not be here for Thanksgiving-his ship will be in just days before Christmas if they are lucky but he wont be coming home

  • Jess_0411

Please don't post when ships are expected to return from deployment. You are not only putting your grandson's life in danger, but everyone's loved ones lives in danger. We need to keep OPSEC (Operation Security) in mind when we're posting on here. Read the guidelines above as well. Thanks!
  • John and Yvonne

    to paybacks398-

sorry your grandson wont' be able to come over to join us for TG.  let him know that we also have sailors over for Christmas dinner.  :)

  • Jess_0411

I've never seen a departure/homecoming date posted anywhere. And just because the news reports it, doesn't make it okay. The basic rule that the command gives everyone to follow is that unless it released by the ship via their website, press release, or facebook, do not repeat it. Knowing the schedule is a privilege, not a right. A privilege they will not hesitate to take away if it is abused. And your sailor can get in a lot of trouble. The rules for posting are listed above and it specifically says to not disclose ship movements in advanced.

I swear I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just trying to keep everyone safe (:
  • paybacks398

I didnt realize I did anything wrong- I never mentioned a ship, where he was going or anything else

  • paybacks398

I have seen more information posted on here in the past few weeks than anything I just put on here-I would never put our sailor's in harms way-so I guess it would just be best for me not to post anything else on this site.  I guess you put me in my place

  • Jess_0411

Its because of the fact that this is a Naval Station Norfolk group and the you gave the time frame. Unfortunately that's enough information for a terrorist to narrow it down and coordinate an attack. No worries, its a learning process. My husband has been in the Navy for five years and I'm still learning new things everyday. Now you know for future reference (:
  • paybacks398

Its OK, you wont have to worry about hearing anything else from me.  I thought I had found a site to be able to share about my grandson because he is now in Norfolk but apparently I have done something that I shouldnt have so you wont have to worry about me posting anything or joining in the conversations any longer.  You might not have meant to but you really hurt my feelings and at my age I dont need much of that to make me feel unwanted and not welcome.  Folks it has been nice for the past 2 weeks-stay safe and I will keep your sailor's in my prayers

  • Connie(Memphis Belle)

paybacks-nearly every group i have been on someone including MYSELF has made a mistake.  actually i am still learning all the rules.  stay with this group.....post your concerns and questions and ideas!!!

  • Jess_0411

I'm really sorry. I'm not trying to put anyone in their place or be the boss of anyone, I swear. I'm just trying to do make sure everyone is keeping within the guidelines to keep our sailors safe. I would hate for us to lose such a great forum because we're not following the rules. There are threats made against the ship and the base on a regular basis. And people who want to harm our sailors do watch pages like this and facebook because Moms/Girlfriends/Wives often slip up and give out information they shouldn't. My husband's ship once got extended a week because some girl thought she'd be cute and post a countdown. Please don't take offense. This is a learning process for everyone.
  • claudia

paybacks please dont leave...we all slip up once and a while ..you are in the right place and i love hearing about all of your children..really helps when mine is out to sea...my son got married right out of boot so his new wife gets most of the news ...which is as it should be ..so i guess i feel alittle left out so you guys help alot

  • Rod

Did I miss something?  I went back a several posts and all I saw was she said her grandson was deploying Monday.  She didn't mention a specific ship or the time or her grandson first and last name.  Give her a break.

  • John and Yvonne

    Dear payback,

please don't leave the group.  We all have to learn the protocal concerning the military.....I still slip up at times and I'm a retired chaplain's wife...

  • paybacks398

I could understand if I had named a ship, a port of call or given some kind of details but I dont understand what I did wrong by mentioning approx when he would be back to port-I know better than to give out exaxt info like that, I have been on these sites for almost a year now,but this is the first time I have been called out about something I said-I guess when you get to be older is hard to swallow from someone you know is probably your kid's age.  I will watch all your post with interest but I doubt I will be joining in any more-I wont take the chance of causing harm to come to someone because of something I said

  • Jess_0411

Well said Marine_Navy Mom. They have been threatening shutting down my husband's command facebook page as a result of people posting things that they shouldn't. That would be really unfortunate because they post pictures of the sailors and that's the only way we can see them when they are gone. People forget how easy it use to put seemingly useless bits of information together. I've been corrected on here and on facebook for OPSEC violations. I just took it as a lesson learned and moved on.

Happy Veteran's Day To All Who Serve Past and Present-My Sincere Thank You

    HAPPY VETERANS TO ALL!!

  • Grasshopper

Very well said Marine Navy Mom!  We all love our Sailors and I love my Navy Moms.  I don't want any harm to come to either of these groups!

  • Christy

My son is just getting started in the Navy.  Well finish A school 12-15-11 then headed your way.  I have truly taken a heart for the milary men and women that serve our America and am proud of them all.  Love the plaque makes me cry.

  • DebbieinCA

    Happy Veteran's Day to all!

Thank you for sharing the men and women you love with our country!!!

  • DebbieinCA

There are 956 members in this group who open their hearts and minds to offer practical and emotional support to every one of us.

Please do not reject the good will of 954 lovong Navy Moms and deny us your good will because of the irritating actions of one person.

One person does not define this group.

  • Grasshopper

Ship 12 Div 098 daughtersbf...I was not trying to "stir the pot" I was simply making a statement that I thought Marine-Navy Mom had stated things well.  I was not taking specific sides although we all do want to keep everyone safe.  Seems to me that you calling out specific Mom's is the one trying to stir up the pot.  We are all here to support our Sailors and each other...no need to call folks out by name and make accusations when you don't know someone.

  • DebbieinCA

I guess I was in the back of the van. I didn't know the issue was dropped. Just saw today's comments.

  • DebbieinCA

daughters bf- What you said to me and 2 other Navy moms was not nice.

I don't know what your 5 second rule is, but my rule is: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Feel free to use it.

  • DebbieinCA

Navy25- Your plaque is beautiful and right on the message! Thank you for posting it!

I hope you don't mind that I also copied it to put on my fb  page. :)

  • Grasshopper

Div 098...I don't appreciate being called the wootangclan.  You don't know me or anything about me.  If you read my post it was directed at Marine Navy Mom giving her a compliment.  Not starting anything or stirring a pot.  Yes, you do have freedom of speech but there is a thing called being polite and respectful and that's what I like to think that most Navy Mom's are.  I have been a part of N4M for a long time and have never seen this type of treatment before.  I have only experienced tremendous support for one another.

  • DebbieinCA

daughters bf- "wootangclan"? Your verbal attacks are highly inappropriate for a group that is all about supporting eachother. We are not free to post whatever we want on this site and that includes tearing down other members.I hope you're banned from posting any further comments.

  • DebbieinCA

daughters bf- I am not the only one on here who took your wootang clan comment as an insult. I googled it and could only find a rap group with very derogatory lyrics. If it is a compliment to be called wootang clan, by all means educate us.

Since you keep mentioning our 1st amendment right to freedom of speech, I'd like to remind you that the 9th amendment of the Constitution of the United States clearly says that our rights may not infringe upon the rights of others. That includes deliberate slandering of another person. That's how celebrities are able to sue the press for publishing things they know to be untrue.

As you can see, I honor our entire Constitution by using the freedoms it gives me while keeping the limits it requires in mind.

As for you giving words of encouragement: I've looked up your comments for the past week and see a woman who has a nasty temper and is more discouraging than encouraging. You apologized for your "snotty comments" (your words) a few days ago and you should do it again.

  • DebbieinCA

Kaleigh, I'm glad to hear it.

  • Jeffsmom1380

I think everyone needs to calm down!  We are on this website for the encouragement of each other & our sailors.  How can you take offense to someone pointing out that we could endanger our sailors with something we post?  No one doubts the innocence with which the post was made.  We all need to remember why we are here.  It is Veterans Day after all.  My son marched in his first Veterans Day parade held in Virginia Beach.  He was elated!  That is why we are here!

  • DebbieinCA

Oh daughters bf- Your posts to me drip with anger and sarcasm, and I don't deserve that.

I won't waste any more of my time on you.

  • DebbieinCA

Jeffsmom. Congratulations to you and your son on the honor of marching in the Veteran's Day parade! I'll bet he looked very handsome in his dress blues! I hope you can get ahold of pictures or, better yet, video. :)

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hi all!  I've been so busy that I haven't been on here in a while.  Wow, time is flying, can't believe the holidays are coming up!

Speaking of Turkey Day and holidays, I just posted a Discussion above so we can have one place to post offers of dinner to our sailors, our sailors' needs too, such as (looking for a host family for dinner, needs for rides to the airport, etc.

This is a great group with so much friendship and experience to share for our benefit and most importantly, for our sailors!  :)

  • DebbieinCA

    Marcy-That's a great idea!

I'll be in Norfolk to see my son over Thanksgiving break but in a hotel.

I'm hoping to find a restaurant that's open for dinner on Thanksgiving. If I can, I'd love to include another sailro whose far from home.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

There's Shula's at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott; Kincaid's on Monticello Ave in Norfolk; and Cracker Barrel in Chesapeake, for a few.  Or you could take the quick $1.50 ferry ride from Norfolk Waterside to the Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth for their Thanksgiving Day buffet.  I love the ferry ride and the views are fantastic.

  • DebbieinCA

Thanks Marci! I'll be staying in Portsmouth because my son is living on the barge right now. The Renaissance Hotel buffet might be a good option. I'll be staying at the Governor Dinwiddie Hotel. I wonder if they serve a Thanksgiving dinner too? I'll have to call them tomorrow. :)

Does anyone have a sailor on the barge in Portsmouth who doesn't have Thanksgiving plans?

  • DebbieinCA

kaleigh :), You're in Norfolk/Portsmouth? Maybe we can all meet up for a big Thanksgiving dinner. What do your inlaws inlaws like doing?  I was an American history teacher, so I just can't wait to see Jamestown and Williamsburg!  Now I teach first grade, but I still love history. Would your parents be interested in any of that? I found what looks like a great brewery in Williamsburg, Williamsburg Ale Works. Not so focus too much on booze, but my niece says Williamsburg winery is really nice too. The discussion above on things to do in Norfolk has links to some Portsmouth museums and art galleries too. I definitely want to take the ferry even if it is cold. I love being on the ocean! :)

  • Jess_0411

My parents came up from Florida last weekend and we did the Williamsburg Winery. It was amazing and I strongly recommend it (:

There is also a Naval History Museum in downtown Norfolk which is really cool. And free!
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

it does snow, sometimes.  not like up north tho.  i've been on the outer banks sinc 81 and we've had maybe 4 big snows and numerous little ones.  with the little ones the snow rarely lasts more that 12 hours (if that long) but the biggest problem is most folks aren't used to snow and don't know how to drive in it.  also, here in the south we don't have the proper equipment (salt trucks and snow plows) to clear it.  most businesses and all the schools close.  they have even shut down the bases except for essential personnel.

  • DebbieinCA

kk, I worry about the same thing. I know the Navy uniforms include nice, warm coats but I still Googled Norfolk weather.

An internet weather service says it's 68 degrees in Norfolk today. That's the same as in So Cal. I love it!I've been watching it for a few weeks now. It seems to stay between the high 40's today's 68. It says it will be in the low '70's for the next couple days then rain and 60's on Wednesday and partilly cloudy and high 50's by Friday.

  • navy25

Barbara Congrats on your sons upcoming wedding and to your family also Barbara and daughtersbf I see that your Sailors wont be home for the Holidays mine son hasnt been long in Norfolk does going home goes by seniority does anyone knows how that works
