Hello! I have a question for updating info... My husband returned to base last week and got the packet from his instructor to update his information (going from single to married etc). Is that all the paperwork we need to fill out in order to have everything updated or do we have to go to other sources as well for additional paperwork? I just want to make sure we have everything correct before he is given his first orders. Thanks for your help in advance! :)
Jessica, your sailor needs to ask for sure what all is in his packet and make sure there isn't anything else to fill out. I cant tell you for sure whats in the packet or if there is more since I don't know whats in it. My husband had to do it all himself. He just went down to admin and filled out the form to add me to his page 2 and get me in DEERs. Also have your husband ask if he needs your ss card and or birth certificate, he will probably also have to have the marriage stuff too that you got when you got married.
navywife is your husband in bootcamp? school? first command? as far as what the insurance covers, it doesn't cover dental that's another company called metlife. You choose between Tricare standard and Tricare prime. Tricare doesn't cover chiropractor, cosmetic stuff, contacts, and a few other things they deem not medically necessary or that they wont cover. It would be easier to ask what you need covered to get a specific answer.
This has been such an awesome website for me to get all the information for my husband and also for myself since this is a HUGE life changer. It JUST literally hit my husband and I that he will be leaving in like a month and a half, so I cried (being honest here). I always spend time with my husband, he's my best friend, I have friends but I mean my days are making him food and laughing with him about all the silly stuff. Can you guys give me some tips on what to expect the first two weeks and any advice? I have been chatting with some navy wives I met here (which is awesome) but still wouldn't mind all the advice I could get. I am in school, work, and workout, so pretty busy at times.
Lily_ter's wife, have you looked into myCAA? It's financial assistance (grants) for spouses. It is only applicable to certain degrees and certifications, and there is a limit to the amount of assistance. As far as other assistance the answer is no, we do not get assistance from the military. Your husband gets his GI bill and at some point he can transfer that to you but I don't know the details.
It can still be worth looking into! And there are always scholarships and grants out there for military spouses-not sponsored by the Navy but other organizations so I would definitely search for those and see what's available for your field. Some may not even be field-specific they may just pay for your courses for whatever you're studying.
To transfer the Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits, your husband has to have served at least six years and commit to an additional four years, so that isn't likely to help you now. MyCAA doesn't cover CEUs, so it appears those avenues are closed to you. You can get more information about both programs by following these links
The National Resource Directory has links to a number of scholarships and grants for military dependents. It may take some work on your part, but can't hurt to check it out. Their link is: https://www.nrd.gov/education_and_training
I believe the length of schooling has to be 24 weeks... and the Navy will pay to move you to where he is. That is the length of ONE school though, not combined school (for example, my husband had an ATT course, A school and a C school). Also keep in mind that each branch has different protocols, so just because one branch does or does not do something does not mean it's the same for all branches.
I know the A school is long enough for ETs and FCs whose A schools are in Great Lakes for the spouses to be moved. But, those are the only rates that can be approved for live ashore in Great Lakes. Sorry, I'm not sure about the other rates outside of Great Lakes though.
I have been told its 20 weeks for a paid move. Is he in A school right now? when they get there usually they will talk to them about it or they can ask for sure when they get there. That doesn't include hold time, that only includes the number of days included if they were to start right away.
My husband just left for BC i catch myself crying and shedding tears i miss him already so much..I hope it gets easier because i hide to cry from my 3yr old son.
My husband graduated BC back in April and it still almost brings tears to my eyes thinking of him leaving. It does get easier, but you never stop missing them. This website helps tremendously though, particularly the boot camp forum. In a week or two you should get something in the mail with his graduation date in it and then a group will be created for that date. Join that group! There are a lot of moms, but there are plenty of wives too. It made such a big difference for me being able to communicate with others and knowing what was going on. Also, it's never too soon to write him, you can just send them all at once when you get his address.
Question ladies about A school... do sailor choose C school or is it like when they signed up that they told them these jobs are available? My husband will be going to San Antonio and I am wondering how that works with c school.
It's usually included in their initial contract if they are going to have C school. I think for certain rates they can choose in boot camp or A school if they want to adds C school but they have to add time to their initial enlistment. I am not too familiar with corpsman school except I remember when my friend's husband was in corpsman A school he got to choose which C school he wanted to go to (basically which medical area he wanted to concentrate in). They also give them a choice of going FMF which may change their initial contract as well.
I am right their with you wifeofasalior. I checked my mail box three times today (just in case the mail man came super late or forgot my letter and had to return lol) just to make sure and was super bummed when I arrived home tonight and there was still no letter:(. I hope we both have better news tomorrow. Hang in there!
For new wives/fiances..I am taking a Navy Spouse Orientation 101 online which is VERY VERY helpful it is long but it is VERY HELPFUL with EVERYTHING possible you can think of you will need the website is:
Hubby has been gone for nearly 3 weeks now and I am doing good, but miss him so much it hurts! Missed his first call, but just got another one today :) It was so good to hear his voice, if I only I could hear it every night! Still haven't gotten a letter though :(
I have not been on the site for a long time, but I decided to reach out to you for your help and support, hopefully someone will try to help me with my quest?
In August i'll be traveling to join my HM Corp Navy husband in San Diego, CA. I am very excited, but also will be traveling by myself from Boston, MA to San Diego, CA. I wonder whether any of you traveled that way and would have some helpful hints to share? I will be staying with my friend for a couple of nights in Forth Smith, MO. Also, I would like to visit METC in San Antonio, TX where my husband attended the A School last year, but I did not attend his graduation and I regretted ever since. I was thinking to go there this year and possibly to attend another graduation if it is possible. Could anyone help me with it? Also, I do not know anyone there to stay with. Would anyone help me with the accommodation information to stay on base's Navy Lodge? I then will be headed to San Diego, CA. Does anyone have any clues for safe, at reasonable prices, places to stay on my way there?
I would really appreciate all of your help and assistance in this matter. I would love to visit San Antonio and the base, where my husband was attending his A Class and graduated with honors.
Hey Mia,
My husband graduates from A school at Fort Sam August 14th. We are driving to California together to either get our stuff and come back or visit family. If you are gonna be in San Antonio around that time you could totally follow us to riverside then from there we can help you. Plus you could probably crash at my parents house :)
I'll keep you posted. Message me for my number and btw that is a HARD drive especially through Texas I just did it

Girl I was there and my two pups missed my husband as much as I did. I remember getting that box and being such a mess girl and let me tell you it gets better (so cliche) but it's true. You will endure so much after this and your marriage will get so strong after being apart. My husband and I went for a hike this weekend and talked abt the craziness we went through but we are so in love more. If you need to chat or need to vent just DM me and I'm here.
Hello everyone! I have been where you are. My husband retired two years ago after 23 years of service. I am a veteran Navy Wife, and I am more than willing to help you in any way that I can.
New navy wife. my husband and i got married March 11, 2014 and he left for basic training at GL 9/3/2014. i just got "the letter" in the mail with his grad date and found out he is Ship 02 DIV 951. we have a 3 year old son who was taking everyting well the first 2 weeks but going into week 3 he has been asking for his dad a lot. Im super excited to be apart of this group.
Hello ladies! New to the group, my husband checked into BC last night and yesterday was pretty rough. We have been together 8.5 yrs and have never been apart longer than a week. We have a almost 2 yr old and he will be missing his birthday next month. Going to take things day by day
Hey ladies... this is probably a stupid question but with my husband being gone and me being very new to the navy wife ordeal.. I need help. Tricare... it is my understanding that I am already enrolled in Tricare standard as he enrolled me into DEERS. is this true ? If so.. is there no insurance card or number or anything? or.. how do I get that? TIA
Hello, I'm a new navy wife. We got married on July 17th of this year! :) However I was wondering if we'll ever get the BAH from the month we got married. They keep saying we'll get half the months BAH and it will be in my husbands next pay. Its been about 4 "next pays" and still no July BAH. Granted, its only $600 but it adds up.
Looking for the parents of a "Paul" on Ship 04 Div 038. I am not sure if you are on this site but I would like to talk to you. It looks like I will be adopting him for Thanksgiving and thought you could send a care package I could surprise him with. If you are out here. I am NOT a Navy wife but I am the mom of a new sailor. He has been in the Navy for about 5 months.he got engaged over christmas. He and his fiance are having a hard time picking a wedding date because they are not sure of when he will be available. He is getting ready to deploy and will be back around July or August. Can anyone give us any ideas on how to set a wedding date a year in advance when 1 Party is in the Navy? Thanks for any help
It's really hard to "plan" anything. I wouldn't recommend doing it unless EVERYTHING is refundable. I've heard and seen horror stories of everything being planned and ready only for the bride or the groom (sailor) to not get back from deployment in time or get deployed unexpectedly..... and thousands of dollars went wasted.
Soon after we got engaged we decided it was best to just get married at the court house and play it by ear. He was in school at the time and we didn't know what would happen after or when. So, I absolutely didn't want to plan or even think about having a "real" wedding only for the plans to change a billion times and maybe end up having to wait a VERY long time to actually be married. Not to mention my family lives all over the country and a few in other parts of the world. Its not fair to them to plan something that may get postponed. When we found out my husband was able to take leave over the holidays and it would be approved, I then threw together a wedding in 3 months with the help of my mom and friends.
Its not "normal" and some people don't understand why we may do things the way that we do them. We have family members who are still upset that we eloped. But, we aren't in "normal" situations. Most engaged couples have all the time in the world to plan their weddings and make them perfect. We don't have the luxury of time.
If you find that you CAN throw together a ceremony or reception, use zazzle or vista print for cheap unique invitations and definitely look through pinterest for affordable diy wedding decor ideas. My mom and I did my whole wedding ourselves with the help of some friends. We used cranberries and candles to save money on centerpieces. Then made cranberry wine with it all after the wedding.
And absolutely use your connections. Ask your friends if they know a venue or HAVE a venue, a farm, barn, winery. Someone may know a baker, or a caterer or be related to one. You'd be surprised. My photographer was a friend from college, and the venue was owned by a military family who was 100% flexible with all of our needs. Even had a generous military discount.
Hey everyone! My husband is currently in BC and I am missing him so much. This is the first time apart...ever. We got married last year but were waiting on the wedding ceremony because it our dream for me to marry him in uniform. So to keep me busy I have been doing accumulating info and budgeting everything. Is there any specific sites or info that would be useful to achieve our dream?
Elizabeth - first off, bootcamp goes by quick! There isn't really anything designated to that sort of thing mainly because its different for everyone. And you can never believe what you hear. You CAN go by other peoples experiences and learn from them. This site is great for that. And everyone is SO helpful. I could go on and on but this "comment" would turn into a novel. I have a blog that I try to add "navy" stuff to whenever I think about it. It has a lot that may be helpful or at least a start for you. http://evataylorthompson.blogspot.com/2015/02/planning-wedding-whil... Check out the PIR for dummies post too! You'll need to plan for that soon! ;) This stuff isn't fact, as I said its different for everyone depending on circumstances. Its just what we experience and hopefully tips and ideas to help other people have an idea of what to expect! They're all linked on the left of the page.
I have a few questions. My SR spoke with his recruiter today - last meeting before he leaves for boot camp. But a few things came up. Recruiter said SR will have 2-3 weeks of living in barracks in Monterey when he gets there. Any married spouses experience this? And for the move, they said they won't pay for this move for a-school to Monterey. I'm just confused by all this since we've never done this before so any advice is greatly appreciated.
Has it expired/is it going to expire or does it need to be renewed for a different reason like her husband has a new rank or re-enlisted so his termination date needs to change?
If it's not expired yet you can get it renewed without your husband having to be with you. You will need to bring a signed DD 1172 or have a POA to sign it at the ID facility. Best bet is to google RAPIDS ID locator to find the one closest to you and make an appt in advance. Some you can walk-in but the wait is forever.
So, I have to vent a little bit. I am missing my husband terribly. He is at basic training right now. I haven't told anyone this but, when he left I felt really depressed. It felt like he had died and I was grieving his loss. That sounds really stark, but it felt that way. I didn't touch anything in our house. I didn't want to spend time at home, except to sleep. It's getting a bit easier now, but it's still tough sometimes. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Grieving, I mean.
@Navywefe — I know exactly how you feel; when he's gone, even if it's just for a few days, I get really depressed and have trouble staying focused and trouble finding the motivation to do basic things (like feed myself or run errands).
It doesn't really stop sucking, but the best thing you can do is keep yourself busy. I've got a bunch of home improvement projects and outings with friends planned for most of my husband's upcoming underways.
Also, write to him as much as you want. Especially while he's at boot camp. Those letters will mean the world to him. Even when my husband is in River City I still email him, sometimes several times a day. It's one-way communication, but it still takes the sting away a little bit and I feel more connected to him.
@sailormade I have written him every day while he has been in boot camp. Judging by how this is going, I don't look forward to his underways at all. I'm kind of glad he'll be a Nuke because that means he'll be in school longer, and we have more time without being separated.
