Oh and I also heard they are shutting down all the USO's :(

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Welcome to our newest member ~Eve!

Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page.  Lots of good info there.  Also take a look at the Pages (19) to the right under the member profiles - be sure to hit "view all".  And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Has there been an announcement about liberty being canceled for NNPTC grads? I thought it was only for PIR grads.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

partnerinewine - as of Tuesday NNPTC is suspending guest attendance at grad ceremonies starting tomorrow but they are still allowing normal leave and liberty.  I believe it is just the leave/liberty for PIR that is cancelled (as of right now).

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - Glad to have you back!!

I thought it was funny, because I was reading on N4M about stores running out of Toilet Paper and then I had a promotional email come in from a local store, advertising that they had tp on their shelves!!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Chipmunk - the way things are going I think I'd rather still be in Cabo right now!

Don't forget to wear your RED tomorrow!

  • potterycat

The state of mind of society is kind of nuts right now.  Stores are being emptied.

I just want to go see my girl down in SC next week!   But with the threat of quarantine for the base, I'm not sure that is going to happen now.  I'm trying not to think of it too much and just waiting for the word from her.  I will be truly disappointed if I don't get to hug her soon.  Her sisters are really missing her too.  Thank goodness for facetime that allows me to "see" her but I really just want to hold her.  It's been too long.

She's upset too.  She called me the other day to tell me about how the college she was considering is calling off school until April and had she gone there she'd have been able to come home but she is stuck at base in SC....  I suppose this is the new normal - Navy life.... I was naive to say the least....

I'm sad for all those families that didn't get to see BC grad.  What a bummer.

Are any of you "prepping"?  There is a threat to shut down schools here in WI.  We have only had 6 confirmed cases in the whole state. How are the rest of you dealing with the chaos?

  • Chipmunk

potterycat - Hoping you can stay positive and maybe you will be able to see your daughter but if not, may she be at peace with it as well. My husband always reminds me that we can not go the route of the "what ifs." -

My youngest's band was suppose to be marching in one of our town's two parades this weekend. His was cancelled and so was the other one! Partially due to rain, but mostly the virus. - It has hit rather close to home with a situation that occurred the other day, so schools and such are talking about closing for two weeks for spring break instead of the one.  For our area it is also a high allergy season which makes it that much harder in my opinion to identify what is what.

  • Chipmunk

    B'sNukeMom - I hear you!!

  • Chipmunk

I just saw this note: USO has suspended operations in all airports - Not sure how many sailors will be flying - other than those headed to A school, but I know my sailor looks for the military services in airports to help with his food costs when traveling.
Attention: Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, all USO Airport locations in the United States will temporarily suspend operations until further notice in order to maintain safe environments and avoid unnecessary risks of exposure.
The USO will evaluate our operational status on a weekly basis and will reopen airport locations as soon as possible. We remain committed to responsibly supporting our service members and their families across the United States and overseas.
For more information and to stay up to date on location statuses, please download the USO Mobile app available for iOS and Android or visit www.uso.org/coronavirus. #BetheForce

I watched PIR this morning, it was much quieter than I remember.

Our office has implemented a work from home policy.  Most of the inside sales staff has left, I'll be around for a bit then I'm headed out too but not home.  Driving to VA (the western part) to go wedding dress shopping with my oldest.  I'll also be meeting her MIL for the first time.

TP and hand sanitizer are missing here too, but my co-worker said that Trader Joe's was fully stocked with everything.  Honestly, if you need more than a months worth of TP, there are worse things that you'll need to be worrying about.  This too shall pass.  They are down to 8 active cases in China, good news.

Ya'll be safe out there :)

    Hi all - Happy Friday!

    See the source image

Things are just getting crazier and crazier......trying to stay positive. We are a manufacturing company so trying to keep going and keep our workers safe.  Holding extra safety meetings to remind everyone about good sanitary practices.  Sad that we have to tell people this lol!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • Velvetenor

Hey all, things are crazy here in the state of NJ, too.  My daughter (HS senior) was off from school on Wednesday so the teachers could formulate a plan for if (when) the schools close. All of the students have Chromebooks so they will be employing online learning if this comes to pass. Since we have seen some of the schools in other NJ counties announcing school closures for at least 2 weeks, I suspect ours will do the same, and I would not be surprised if they announced it this afternoon. My daughter is sad - all of their school trips are cancelled, and possibly prom will be cancelled, too. I feel for her. Most colleges in NJ are closing and sending kids home and/or having the students employ online learning after their Spring Break is over.

We are still hoping to see my sailor son in SC in April. We plan to drive his car down there, so we don't have to worry about airline issues, but I hope that they do not restrict the sailors to base and prohibit leave/liberty. Like others, I just want to see and hug my son. He is doing well in A school so far (3.64 GPA), so he is really hoping to earn reduced study time so that he can spend Easter weekend with us.

I normally work from home, so no change for me there, but I am working at a Panera today because we are having new carpet and wood floors installed in my house, so I needed a quiet place to take my calls. It seems pretty normal here right now, but I will brave the store before I go home and see if I can actually get some TP and milk and stuff that we actually need. It's annoying that some are stocking up like crazy people and leaving no goods for those of us who just want to get our normal weekly shopping done!

I am a research scientist turned medical writer and, while I am no virus expert, I still believe that there is no reason for anyone to panic. Use common sense, follow good hygiene and wash your hands, and see a doctor and quarantine yourself if you feel sick. The elderly and folks with chronic respiratory illness are the only ones who really need to take extra precautions right now. We will get through this, like we have with other pandemics in the past. Hang in there, folks! :)

  • partnerinwine

Crazy in Boise too, even with no confirmed cases. I foolishly thought I'd get to Costco when they opened the doors this morning. There was not a parking spot to be found.  I just wanted to buy a few extra things for the hope that our sailor still gets to come home next week after PS graduation. I'm worried they will cancel his leave. We still plan on flying out next week to bring him back. I'm looking forward to seeing the house they are renting and stocking it up for Prototype!

Allergies are ramping up here too. Lots of scratchy throats and sneezing. I'm a medical laboratory scientist at a hospital here and we all give each other the accusing side eye with every sniffle ;-)

    Stay health friends!

  • ProudOfK

Velvetenor - thank you for being a voice of reason and common sense. And B’sNukeMom I like your Bob post.

  • Chipmunk

Hi all - I buy paper products in bulk, just because I can and I don't have to dash to the store when we run out. So, I haven't even thought of buying anything. I was on the phone with my Sister in Law and even went to the garage to survey my selection. I have plenty of TP, paper towels, Kleenexes, and even Sanitizing wipes already on hand. Granted this started when I had 5 children in school and we had to supply ample stock to the public schools.

Now for other information. I verified with my husband that this was public and he said yes, or I would not have been able to open it. It may take a bit to load, but it is a memorandum on DoD restricted travel. Not sure how it will determine individual situations, but since people were commenting on travel, I thought I would share.

  • Chipmunk

I am not good with all of the legalese so, I am only sharing the information. I know it is already affecting plans our family had for this weekend to attend a family funeral out of state. And other restrictions that are being imposed.

And Velvetenor - I am with you, I feel sorry for the kids and the activities that are being cancelled.

B'sNuke  - BOB is great!!  If you all get a chance to go to the BC Mom's group BelovedbyHim wrote a cute poem based on Psalms 23!

JayDee - Glad to hear that China is on the mend!

  • Chipmunk

Okay, for the lighthearted moment of the day!! I was saying something to my 17 yr. old  son about my paper stock supply in the garage and his response was - "Well if we get really desperate we have cloth diapers!!"  - All I could do was laugh, Yes, I still have usable cloth diapers and a washer and dryer that work! Plus a gallon jug of vinegar and Lysol liquid concentrate and laundry soap in bulk!

  • Velvetenor

Haha, Chipmunk! You posted "Bob" at the same time I was drafting my post, so I didn't see it until now! Love it!! :)

  • partnerinwine

I just heard from my son. He was told that CA, WA, NY and FL were restricted for leave and that there will probably be others in the coming days. He said he may be bringing some Californians home with him :)

  • Chipmunk

JayDee659 - I hope the wedding dress shopping is going well!

  • KayCee

Hi all - I’m in Western WA and the governor has ordered all schools closed in at least 4 counties closed until Apr 24. Also no social gatherings of 250 people or more. I was registered for a 5k tomorrow, which of course has been cancelled. I work in healthcare and all our caregivers are required to sign a daily attestation that they don’t have a fever, cough or other symptoms.  It’s a challenge for many here since I work in a field where working from home isn’t an option.
So far, my sailor is heading out on deployment soon and I haven’t heard that there have been any changes for his boat.

  • Chipmunk

Good Morning! Hi KayCee and thesuperm72 !

We have two wonderful ombudsmen for my son's ship and she is always posting helpful information. She shared a link to this FAQ about Travel Restrictions - https://media.defense.gov/2020/Mar/13/2002264688/-1/-1/1/FAQ_TRAVEL...

I realize this is a hard time with spring break and planned travels. I know I want to go see my grandbaby! I thought I would share the information that is available.

  • Ceej0347

Ok mommas - looking for knowledge or advice.

i just made the cross country move with my sailor to WA(literally just got here yesterday). With the move he is to weigh the Uhaul and trailer full (which we did along the way) and weigh it unloaded. Does anyone know does the unloaded have to be at a weigh station or can it just be documentation from Uhaul in the weights of each (the 10’ truck and car trailer)...

anyone have any insights.  His sponsor doesn’t seem to know much. And he doesn’t check into his base until Monday to ask command.

  • ShipOfDoodles

Same here SuzyPWarrior. And my son confirmed they have received the restriction posting.

All-I assume that means I cannot travel to see him following his graduation? I am confused, for if they are allowing local leave, how does that protect them if they are going off base locally? I shall be flexible, but I sure would like to know for sure that I am not allowed to travel to spend the weekend with my son--even if he is allowed "local leave."

    Aagh. Confusion reigns.

  • ShipOfDoodles

The one good thing out of all of this, is that my son seems so happy and has made some great friends in his class. That makes me feel so much better about his own well-being. (Insert smile here.)

  • Northwoodsmom

I just got back from the airport, I agree my son was extremely happy and has bonded with several of the other nukes. He was coughing alot which was worry some but he said everyone had colds. They were protected at RTC I am more worried about them at the airport, we were all able to wander pretty freely. Just had to remind them to wash there hands and not touch their face. Praying for their safety daily.

  • Chipmunk

Ceej0347 - So, I tried to ask my husband, but he seemed totally baffled that you would need to do any of this. So, I will ask - Why do you need to know the weight of your son's load? Is the Navy paying him for moving his stuff? Curious as my son just moved his stuff in his car himself. Can you just turn in the U-Haul bill? The U-Haul company should know the weight of their vehicles.

My husband says, sorry, this just seems weird. Maybe someone else has more experience with this.

  • Chipmunk

SLSNavyNucMom - First of all welcome! I know you have been reading a lot. I honestly can not give you answers to your questions. If you happened to see Anti M's comment on BCMom - she also says, I don't know that any of them RTC or the A school really know. I just had access to the information and so I posted it so it was available for anyone to read.

ShipofDoodles and SuzyPWarrior - I am sorry that this is happening. I am not speaking from any place of authority - I just know what our family is dealing with personally because of my husband's work and what I am seeing with the military connections I do have and I know that travel is being restricted, and my assumption is that it is to keep germs from moving place to place. That is not helpful and that doesn't make it easy - I want to go see my grandbaby out of state, we have an upcoming wedding we were planning on  attending and my husband was to be going out of state to a family funeral but we are having to make decisions based on the opinions and directives of others now, because like it or not - it could jeopardize his job, if we don't. Even if we have enough, faith or belief that we will be fine, take all precautions, etc, we are to some extent not always the rulers of our own life. Our sailors are under the jurisdiction and leadership of the Navy, and a lot of this is most likely falling in the blurry section that is one of those "wait and see".

  • NonnaB

Chipmunk, when my son moved from NY to Norfolk, he was compensated for moving himself and that compensation included the weight of the items he was moving.

  • jes12joy

Ceej0347, from what I know about the self move which was called "ditty move" when I was in the Navy and when we moved some with my husband while active. The member usually has to get the truck weighed loaded and unloaded and provide the documents (usually like a receipt showing the weight) when submitting the request for moving reimbursement. We normally went to a truck stop to get the truck weighed for both. Hope this helps.

  • Chipmunk

NonnaB - Thank you. My husband was just flabbergasted that if you were moving your stuff yourself that you would have to have your stuff weighed. He figured you would just turn in your receipts. I am assuming it has to do with determining whether or not the size of the rental was needed or not for the stuff. I honestly don't know, so I am glad others replied. My son stuffed everything from his apartment in Prototype into his small car, including his bicycle and drove from GC to Norfolk, VA. To my knowledge he was only paid mileage for the move and I don't know that his sponsor was much help with the answers to his questions. Every situation is different, so I hope Ceej0347's son was able to get the truck weighed after they unloaded it and before they had to turn it in.

  • Chipmunk

SLSNavyNucMom - Well said! As a mom of five children who has always been in control of what plans happened when and who did what, there have been a few other things in addition to the Navy that have made me realize that I have to be flexible, bend a little, and trust God more - so that I don't break in the process.

Keep in mind, your sailor is the best source of information on his actual movements. We might have ideas or experience with how something has played out in the past, but your sailor is the only one that can actually tell you what is going to happen with him. So, keep encouraging that line of communication and help him to understand it as best as you can and then know that even they may have orders or directives change at the last minute. My son's ship left recently and within a 72 hour time span his reporting time changed about 3 times, I think!

  • ProudOfK

Ceej0347 and Chipmunk - when our son moved from GC to BS for Prototype he packed everything in his car as I remember it he needed to get both an empty and loaded weight on his car before he left and then at least a full weight when he got to BS - not sure if he also needed to get an empty weight at that end. My understanding was that this was so he could be reimbursed for the weight of what he transported in addition to straight mileage reimbursement.

  • Chipmunk

ProudOfK - Thank you! This is good information to know, not sure it helps my sailor, but hopefully we can help others in the future.

  • Ceej0347

ProudOfK and Chipmunk and jes12joy and NonnaB

Thanks so much - it truly helps! We found a truck stop that could weigh the truck empty.

  • Chipmunk

Ceej0347 - Yeah! So glad it has all worked out!

  • SubMom

Our sailor was told the weight of the empty vehicle versus full had to be done at a DOT authorized scale. With that said, Our sailor was going to drive to his new command but weather  changed all of that. He ended up flying out over a week early to avoid a massive storm and shipping his car. None of it was reimbursed.

  • Ceej0347

    Submom3

thanks so much. We found one - took us awhile and they are closed until Monday morning. Luckily he doesn’t have to check in until later in the day on Monday.

thanks again everyone for the info and help!!!! Knew I could count on y’all!!!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Sunday.

Ran errands yesterday - hubby and I got our 2nd shingrix shot (and now today he has fever & aches).  We went to our local grocery store and we had to wait in line to get in!  Then many of the shelves were bare - it was crazy!  No eggs, no pasta, no frozen veggies - very little fresh fruit & fresh veggies. No potatoes no onions.  Soup and beans almost all gone.  We didn't even look for toilet paper because luckily we  buy that at Costco and have enough on hand.  It's crazy out there.  All the schools have shut down.  The news was saying the wait to get in to our local Costco was 2 hours!  Yikes!  Be smart people but don't panic!

  • The Hammer

I am super thankful that I live in a small town! Ran to the grocery store this morning and thankfully, they still have all of the essentials including TP and chicken. They are getting low on butter... but as this is a dairy state... hopefully they receive more tomorrow.

  • Chipmunk

SubMom - I am so sorry that your son was not reimbursed for any of his travel. I know that entire situation was difficult.

B'sNukeMom - Sorry to hear that there was so much food unavailable. The store closest to my house, did have a sign up saying they were limiting the amount of certain items, which would have been wise for all stores to have done a lot sooner.

  • Chipmunk

So the ombudsmen for my son's ship posted a comment on that FB page to clarify some things. The most important part to share is that the domestic travel restrictions apply to service members and DoD employees mostly.  I assume this means that if someone wants to travel to see their sailor they may do so, assuming their sailor is able to leave NNPTC for local liberty.

Hopefully this is helpful to someone.

  • Chipmunk

ShipOfDoodles - I meant to comment yesterday that I am glad your sailor seems to be acclimating well and is gaining friendships.

  • Chipmunk

SuzyPWarrior - I am sorry that your sailor will not be able to come home after A School. That is hard.

KayCee - Your schools are closed for a long time! Wow. I understand how difficult it is for your work situation. My husband's work told him not to travel or be in a gathering of more than 100+ people, but thankfully he can still take my son to his TKD practices in the evening. My son's ship left for an underway just prior to a lot of this but I don't know how it will affect their return. I assume they will be doing some evaluation of the sailors with your son before they go on their deployment.

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - I meant to tell you that when I had my 2nd Shingles shot the pharmacist told me that many people will have a reaction that seems a lot like they have the flu and supposedly this means that the vaccination is working. I spent the day after my 2nd shot in bed and just rested, and drank Powerade / Gatorade - It definitely affected me more than the first shot did.

  • Northwoodsmom

The Hammer, my son just got to SC yesterday. I am also from a very small town in northern Wisconsin. People don't seem to panic so easily here, well maybe if there was a shortage of beer it would be worse, they seem to like that more. We seem to feel alot more safe here. All of the shelves at out two small stores are full, it might cost more but at least you can get it.

  • The Hammer

Northwoodsmom... we primarily live in southern Wisconsin but have a 2nd home in Presque Isle. Glad to hear the Northwoods are handling things well! My sailor is busy qualifying at his new base in WA.
  • Northwoodsmom

I will pray God keeps him safe along with the rest of our Sailors, I don't know how all of you stay so strong but I am trying. You all are such great mentors for the rest of us.
