I intended to post this yesterday - but well just stuff happened.

    https://media.defense.gov/2020/Apr/05/2002275059/-1/-1/1/DOD-GUIDAN...

I don't know if the DoD guidelines are going into effect at NNPTC or not but I know personally it is at military instillations across the world. If you read closely, it is a "recommendation" if you can't maintain 6' but each command can enforce that as they wish to my knowledge. My husband did send me an image yesterday but I can't find a link and he didn't think to share it, that says when in uniform they have to wear certain colors. I will post more as I have time, but I have to see if my ombudsmen has that information first and then I will try to post back here.

Keep in mind, all accessories with our sailors when they are in uniform is black!  If any veteran mom knows differently feel free to correct me. I was initially told by someone who should know that I could recycle my sailor's retired "blueberry" NWU's and make masks as well as the black ones I am making from a pair of black dress pants. The image my husband shared, did not allow for use of the retired NWU's!!

  • Chipmunk

    CORRECTION:

Okay I just checked my Ombudsman FB page, there is an official statement posted that I am not allowed to copy but it seems they are currently allowing various colors on face masks, until "official ones" can be issued.- Still not entirely sure. The best thing is for you to get direct information from your sailor, for those of you that have current communication with them.

I have also seen a video of how to make a mask out of the short sleeves of a T-shirt that you then insert a coffee filter behind. The T-shirt itself may still be worn as a sleeveless the way it is shown. I will see if I can post that later.

    Good Morning and Happy Tuesday!

CSW - thank you for sharing about your coworker - and glad to hear she's on the mend!

Chipmunk - thanks for posting the info on the masks for the sailors.  There's a company out there - NineLine Apparel that is selling a simple black face mask.  It's a veteran owned company.  I don't know anything about them and am not promoting them in any way - just a suggestion to check them out.....

    Have a great Tuesday!

  • CSW

Confirmed with my sailor black is best and I've found some local people who are off work sewing at home. They've posted on Facebook chats.

  • Chipmunk

CSW - Thanks!! I just posted the discussion above with links to patterns, ideas, and my personal comments. Now, I have to start cutting and sewing! Everyone have a great day!!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNuke Mom - I will look at the company you shared. One of the biggest issues people are facing is lack of supplies to be able to make things with and I just found out yesterday that Hobby Lobby (our preferred craft store locally) just closed their doors last Friday for the safety of their employees!

I have my own stash plus I think I have a lot of older elastic and other sewing notions that I took to storage a month ago till I could deal with it, that I had inherited from my aunt!! So I am making these from stuff I currently have on hand. No out of pocket expense, just my time.

  • Chipmunk

Here is the link to those masks - https://www.ninelineapparel.com/collections/masks/products/nine-lin...

It looks to be made from stretchable material (which I just washed some remnants of black dance material yesterday!).

But NOTE: The mask should not be used ... or (3) in the presence of a high intensity heat source or flammable gas.

My concern and what I don't know until I can talk with my sailor, is are they going to be expected to wear this on the ship and for our Nukes, are they going to need something that is more appropriate for their work environment? For the moment, the only thing I can gather is that the DoD directive is for anyone on the installations to wear masks if they can't maintain 6 ft distance, not sure about on the ship - I am clueless on that one. Good price on the masks and a neat design, not sure of S/H costs.

  • Chipmunk

CSW - I notice that you are not a member on BC Mom group. But they are quarantining a lot of the recruits at RTC. I don't know if your friend's experience would be helpful to them or just make that Momma heart ache for them all the more.

  • CSW

Chipmunk. She was just cleared by the CDC today so this is a good story for all to share.  Please feel free to share with others. She was confirmed March 24 but started to feel ill March 16 and was finally tested on the 19th. The week of the 24th was tough and by 4/3 her fever had subsided and now today she was confirmed recovered/clear by the CDC.  She wasn't feeling well for a few days before the 19th and the fever came in waves.

  • Johanna

My brother had it for about 3 weeks.  He is a semi pro athlete, like me, very healthy, etc.  Got it from a neighbor that had taken his elderly father to the Dr in Boston.  Turns out the Dr had it.  That same night, he and his wife had dinner at my brothers house.  Glenn became symptomatic 48 hours later, my brother became symptomatic 72 hours later.  My brother had the fever, aches, loss of appetite, severe fatigue and lingering cough.  He was diligent with fluids, foods with protein, made sure he moved  around each day, and most importantly, has not pushed himself.  One day at a time.  It does not seem to discriminate, healthy, unhealthy, young, old.  Please stay safe.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Johanna - thanks for sharing about your brother and so very glad to hear that he is mending.

Chipmunk - your discussion on the masks is very informative.  Thank you for posting that!

  • Chipmunk

Johanna, I also appreciate you sharing your brother's experience. Early on, our news did a piece on a local, healthy, < 50, lawyer who had contracted the virus. Yes, no descrimination.

CSW - Thanks for letting me share your friend's experience.

  • Chipmunk

The following link my husband sent me earlier today and we watched together this evening. It is an interview with a former Navy Seal, Rep. Crenshaw from TX. I am not endorsing his book or a political party, I just wanted to share his comments and ideas on how we as Americans should be going through our current state of things. It is not long, but you will need to listen all the way through to hear the main points of what I wanted to share.

Good morning,!! I feel like I am the last one to bed and the first one up! - I posted my escapade to get black thread in my  "mask" discussion. If not a laugh maybe it will make you smile. I am doing my duty!! And yes, gloves on the ground, Yuk! as bad as dirty diapers in parking lots! (Watch the video, you will understand.)

I got a message from B&C yesterday - the wedding venue has asked them to come up with a back up date for the wedding in case the 7/19/2020 date can't happen.  They went with 10/4/2020.  They will have to make a final decision on 6/1 as to whether or not the 7/19 date is a go....As of now CA is on lockdown until 4/30 and then a decision will be made then as to whether or not it's extended. So......who knows?!?

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom, it's nice that they offered you a back up date for the wedding.  My oldest is getting married 8/29 and we're just hoping that things will be normalized by then.  There aren't any cases where she is, so we're keeping our fingers crossed.  Her ex boyfriend had to cancel his wedding, they ended up going to the court house.  My daughter is friends with his now wife and has really been feeling bad for her.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

A friend of mine shared wedding pictures of her son's wedding with only 10 people there from a week ago. She said the ceremony was moving and beautiful, and they will have a reception at some later date. The couple looked so happy. Life goes on.

Lots of good info sharing. I loved listening to Rep. Crenshaw. Thanks Chipmunk. Very common sense. Emotions are high for everybody. If we can take a deep breath and step back a bit, we'll get through this together. It's hard when we worry about our sailors because we are always mothers first, but there is so much beyond our control. My mantra these days is "Faith & Trust." My sailor goes to work every day and wears a mask. It's a new normal but it won't be forever.

B'sNuke, thanks for the cartoons. Love them!

  • Chipmunk

NancyJo - Thanks for sharing your mantra and watching the video!! Keeping my "MamaBear" emotions in check is my new habit I am working on.

JayDee659 & B'sNukeMom - I feel for you. I am on the other end of the wedding spectrum. My youngest daughter had just received her LLC to start her own wedding coordinator business and was also working on the side with a florist as well, who had a corporate function and 5 weddings cancel in one day! We ourselves were to attend a wedding, but bowed out so that just their immediate family could attend (50 max at that time). They as well plan to do a reception later.

My hope, all of those who went to the court house but really want a ceremony will be able to celebrate at a later time!

  • CSW

    Chipmunk,

Thanks for posting that link. What we forget perhaps that the enemy our sailors face could just as easily be a virus as it could be a weapon, and anything that takes our defenses down is a threat against our country.

An update from my co-worked who tested positive. The CDC released her from having to report daily, but she is still under quarantine for another two weeks. Her spouse who has been in close contact with her during this event has experienced no symptoms.  Praise the Lord.

We need to continue to remain calm and pray. God tells us that during times of hardship we should remain joyful in the Lord.

You all are a huge blessing! Thank you!

  • ProudOfK

NancyJo - my niece’s wedding was last Saturday. It was not the wedding they had initially been planning and most of us were there only by watching the live stream of it. But it actually was beautiful, they are just as married as if they had their original plan and they too figure they will do something complete with the full wedding garments at some later date.

Cheryl, Welcome! I'm also in FL and have a son headed to Charleston whenever they can get him out of GL. :)

  • Chipmunk

Cheryl S - Welcome to Nuke Moms - We are glad you are here. My sailor has been out in the fleet since June of last year, he graduated Prototype April 2019 - It just dawned on me - it was Good Friday! My husband and I went to Easter service with him there in GC. This year we are all watching services online, and for us not going to see my MIL out of state. Cheryl S, my sailor is #4 of 5 and our oldest son.

Maestra - have you heard more from your son?

ProudofK - That is so wonderful that you were able to watch a live feed of your niece's wedding!

CSW - Even if our sailors don't think they are in a war (even if it is a virus), I sure feel like we are. From everything that I have read about WWI & II and stories that were told to me by my grandmother & parents -  bare shelves, rationing food, no fabric or thread, no flour or yeast,  trying to make Face Masks! Honestly, COVID-19 is not necessarily as scary to me as chlorine gas!! In WWI, Peach pits were collected by the 1,000s and piled up to burn into charcoal for face masks. (My boys and I read about It, but here is one article I found in a quick search)  https://www.independentri.com/independents/north_east/opinion/artic...

B'sNukeMom - Thank you for the Passover reminder!

  • Chipmunk

Johanna - just rereading your comment in my email feed - You said your brother's friend had taken his elderly father to see his doctor and the Dr had COVID-19. I am just curious, did the elderly father contract the virus? I was just wondering, if you knew or not.

  • Maestra

Chipmunk - we got the I'm a Sailor! call yesterday. :) He didn't have his orders yet but felt like they were going to send them in military transport (maybe C130?) to SC. I hope so! Then he'll be out of RTC and can use his phone. Yippee! Also, we are from OK originally. Duncan, Lawton, Norman areas. And diehard Sooner fans!

  • Chipmunk

Hi Maestra, glad you have a sailor! I am loosing track of who has and hasn't - and I was also trying to remember whose sailor was suppose to leave but got sick. Glad your son is healthy. And hopefully he will leave soon. It is my impression that most of the sailors would rather get to their A schools than have to stay in RTC, or THU (Temporary Holding Unit) Speaking of leaving, it is probably best not to indicate how they are traveling, I know things are different right now, but that is all the more reason to just say leaving or still waiting in GL. - It is okay, we all keep learning in this journey of being a Navy Mom - I suppose I am just becoming more and more conscientious of what my husband likes to remind me, - emails (and this public forum) are no different than postcards, easily read.

You are a long way from home though!! My husband's favorite team is the Chiefs, so as far as college - He likes one of the KS teams but he roots for Sooners and my daughter's boyfriend roots for the Cowboys. My sailor wears orange and his dad and brother wear red, but it only matters to my husband! My sailor doesn't care much to watch football and my youngest is a Bills fan! ( I think they are blue!)

Did your sailor tell you his rate yet? When they get to GC they will "class up" with other sailors from their same rate, so depending on if they have enough to make a class, he may start on a Monday as soon as he gets to GC, otherwise, he will be put in INDOC, where he will hear from other superiors, and learn more things about acclimating to Navy Life, but also be given a job / task to do around NNPTC. My son is an ETN3 and he was INDOC for a month. There were actually advantages to that.

I am going to bump another one of my discussions back into the que above for some of our new members to read about A School Daily Schedule.

    Hi all - Happy Thursday!

I'm smiling under my mask ;-D

Awwww JayDee - little Fiona has grown up so much - I love her! Thanks for sharing the link ;-D

Maestra - woohoo - you have a Sailor!  Hopefully he'll get to Goose Creek soon!

  • Maestra

Chipmunk, thanks for the advice about what to say / not say. You're right - I'm still learning! :) We are far from where we started, but my inlaws still live there, so we do try to visit when we can. We also have a son in TX so that area is special to us. We were just in TX in March, but with the restrictions, we didn't get to see anyone else.

My son's rate is EMN. I know he's ready to get started! When we talked he sounded more comfortable and settled than I think even he thought he would be at this point. I'm glad to know that he is loving this way of life so far.

  • Chipmunk

Maestra - it is good to hear that your son is loving his journey so far!! He has 6 months approximately of A school ahead of him for the first round. And they just keep moving forward.

It is hard to know what to say and not to say, I am working myself on leaning more toward the less is better - but then I still like to chat a lot!

JayDee659 - thanks for the Fiona link. One of the first comments I saw posted on this group, I think was about Fiona and I was trying to figure out what or who you all were talking about. I had to go look it up myself! Which leads me to my next comment (or because of the scrolling you may actually read first.)

Show of hands - how many of you are still going in to work vs working from home?  Or even been furloughed? I'm still in the office.

Our company is considered essential business (residential construction) so I'm here and our yard (warehouse) is working.  Doing our best to keep everyone safe, social distancing, masks (our county went mandatory masks on Sunday), having employees take their temps before coming in.

Each day I keep thinking they're going to take us off the essential list but nope, not yet.  I did get the paperwork done for the SBA loan for the Paycheck Protection Program and I was told on Tuesday that our application was approved!  Our banker told us we could have the money maybe by tomorrow.

My husband is still working too - he delivers oxygen to the various stores that the company has so he doesn't go into patients homes like he did with the last job.

  • Byron'sNukeMom

I am a teacher in Arkansas.  Schools are closed for the rest of the year.  Working from home means Alternative Methods of Instruction packets (AMI - released items from ACT and general review material for history and science) and being available to answer questions and concerns from parents and students (email, Remind, Google Classroom).  We do have a significant rural population with no access to technology at home.  In our district Wifi hot spots are being created in parking lots of the high school and later the other campuses to be able to download the AMI packet.  Our bus drivers and cafeteria staff are delivering a breakfast and lunch to the parking lots around our district and to several locations for our "country kids".

So I am a Spanish teacher so I am blogging on my Google Classroom about how to plant a garden...in Spanish.  Teachable moments abound.

    Stay safe and healthy y'all.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

B'sNuke, I think the more businesses they can safely keep working the better for the economy which is in very bad shape right now. Prayers that continues.

I'm at work. I work for a school district and they are keeping everyone on payroll even though keeping folks busy is tough. We are a 1-1 district which means every child has technology, either an iPad or laptop. Now, whether they have it at home is something else and has to be accommodated. I am a catalog librarian so I don't have student contact. I tried to work at home but I don't have a lot I can do at home. Plus my daughter with whom I live works for TDAmeritrade and they have moved almost all their folks to work at home. Because of confidential client contact she needs to be alone and we don't live in a place that accommodates isolation for 2 people. So, I rearranged my workplace to give me 6 ft around so people don't get  in my sphere. Then I keep everything sanitized (no one comes into my space) and hand sanitize every time I leave my bubble. Not easy but I'm making it work. Thank God I still have a job.

FaceTimed my sailor and his family last night. Doing the best they can social distancing. They keep cranking out new nukes ready for the fleet.

  • Maestra

Byron'sNukeMom We have a lot in common! I teach Spanish, I'm toggling between my Navy sites and Google Classroom, and a Byron in the family!

  • Chipmunk

Good morning, or mid-day to all that popped on and answered B'sNukeMom's question while I was trying to type up my comment!

I am at home, have been for almost 26 years now, aside from a short stent when I went back to working nights so we didn't have to get child care for 3 girls. The day after I was hired, I found out I was pregnant with our sailor (#4/5). After almost 4 months of working midnight shift, and one at home during the day, we decided it was better for Mom to be at home.

My husband is essential, a civiliarn engineer for the Air Force, his employer has been following DoD orders from the beginning. First thing I bought was two extra thermometers for the kids to take their temperatures 2x / day as well. They are still working on site, but were set up to work from home if need be.

  • ProudOfK

B’sNukeMom interesting that residential construction is considered essential there. That’s great. Here in Washington it’s not and the construction industry in Eastern Washington is very frustrated. Construction could so easily be done while they’re still maintaining social distancing but it is not considered essential in so they’re not allowed to continue. Government construction can go on so schools being built can continue just not residential. I feel so bad for the small businesses I think they’re taking the hardest hit.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

ProudOfK - we are actually a truss manufacturer so we feed directly into the residential construction....and we also do some commercial construction - floor trusses for hotels/apartment complexes.  My dad (who you know is in WA) told me about WA shutting down the construction side and he was worried about us.  But for now we are still good.

And yes, this is having a huge impact on so many small businesses.  Unfortunately it's going to be a long time before our economy can recover from this pandemic :(

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Chipmunk - take a look at your links - a few of them aren't working.

  • ShipOfDoodles

    Hi, all! Loving the stories!

I am a bookkeeper in Indiana--my brother and sister-in-law own the businesses for which I keep the books. One was shuttered by the State of Indiana, as it is a boat rental and considered non-essential--we have a contract with the State to rent at the shoreline. That was an especially painful closure. The other is our 52 year-old business which was considered essential because we sell gas, limited groceries and carryout deli foods, along with bait, tackle, ice, firewood, beer and wine, and such. We shut our doors for at least two weeks by choice last Sunday at 1:00 p.m. People are simply not staying put. The campgrounds (closed by the State on Monday), were overrun with people and we had no means ready to control the crush of people entering the store (never thought it would be like that.) Parking is not sufficient for us to handle drive-up/pick-up orders, and not at all conducive to bait sales (minnows)--which were out of sight on Saturday. So, we shut our doors to protect our employees AND the public while we figure out what is next. I still have plenty of work for a while, but with no customers, there won't be much to do after I get everything on the computer and balance the accounts. I submitted the application for the payroll protection program for the forced-closed business on Friday morning, but our bank's lending officer was overwhelmed by the entire fiasco and we have heard absolutely nothing from him. Still, we are counting our blessings! R&J have some reserves to keep people on payroll for at least two more weeks, and we still have the option to go the unemployment route. Such a tough time for everyone. I admit it is hard to see our businesses shuttered--the lakefront empty of all the boats and the parking lot at our main store empty--no one in sight. I was surprised at how emotional I felt over the whole thing.

As for my sailor son, he is enjoying his ten days of base-restricted liberty. He has become really good friends with a classmate over the course of his A-School. At the close of comps they went to their SLPO asking to NOT be placed in the same class for Power School so they could begin to date. The request was granted. I don't think I've ever seen him so happy--and he's always been a pretty happy kid. I find it so interesting that there are so many military romances. But then, why wouldn't there be?

Come Sunday there will be nine of us (people and pets) in my little cabin in the woods--three moving from one quarantine to another. I know there will be challenges with four working from home, but I remain grateful that my sons are gainfully employed and that (at least for now), their jobs are safe. I know eventually I will look back with some affection for this time when we have all been forced to slow down--odd as that may sound.

My doodle fam (Theo, Margot and baby Rossi) send our best wishes to each of you. Stay healthy, please!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

ShipOfDoodles, I am interested in your sharing quarantine with another group. I think that's a great idea and I thought I would see more of that b/c people are social creatures and the isolation is tough. I know people who are rattling around all alone in their houses. I really thought more people would have single kids come live with them, or bring in their older parents, or some such. But actually I have seen very little of that. I guess it's hard to give up "your place" maybe?

I'm about ready to go to my daughter's an hour away and go knock on their windows to see my g-babies. That is the part that is killing me. I think I will on Sunday. :v(

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Also, I am so sorry about your business. So many people do not get isolating. If they did maybe you could have stayed open with some service. Seriously, yesterday our mayor in Omaha had to shut down all the parks because the other day there were literally about 100 people just milling around in a park having a great ol' time, not distancing at all. People do not get it! One of the grocery chains here was talking about their people having to go through the parking lot every day picking up discarded gloves and other stuff people are just dropping rather than disposing correctly. Why should someone have to pick up your possibly contaminated gloves? SMH Nebraska has not been hit as hard as some places but tell that to the families of the 14 we have lost. I'll be so glad when this is over.

ShipofDoodles my daughter and her friend made the same request. They will celebrate their 4th anniversary this summer. I guess no one understands a Nuke like another Nuke.

My heart goes to all of you with small business. My husband's family owned a small business all of his life, until his father's passing about 15 years ago. My husband's biggest concern has been for the economy. Interestingly here, at least at our small park across from our house, we see people out, but not in large groups.

ShipofDoodles, my brother and his family take summer trips up north, not sure where but they love to be at their little trailer and go fishing, etc.

NancyJo - If I was an hour away from my grandbaby, I would be there in a heartbeat. My SIL's company has told them no visitors without paperwork, but I hope that is not the case for your family.
