ProudOfK my daughter took and passed her final board for Prototype on this day 3 years ago. She called me at 4 am while we were driving to GC to let me know it was a "go".
Today is a busy day at our house. Two guys came and took the hot tub early this morning (we foolishly tried to dismantle it ourselves). Now the tree guys are here taking down trees. They'll be here about 3 days. My poor Coco is going crazy, I may have to slip her some melatonin...
Thank you everyone! Memories of graduations, passing exams are all much better than tornados!! (We were at Olive Garden trying to celebrate my b'day a day early, because of the kids activities, too new to OK to know how to pay attention to tornado warnings! F5 - May 3, 1991 - We have sunshine today and I am one happy camper, life is good.
My kids remember my b'day, I can still remember their b'day and even my grandbaby's. I am blessed.
NancyJo - Hopefully your grandkiddos are getting a chance to enjoy that sunshine and play outside - giving Momma some breathing room in the house. I know what it is like to have little ones in small areas all together!
Happy Birthday Chipmunk, I hope you are enjoying your day and that it is filled with special Blessings. I know you hay been a blessing to me and am so glad I got to know you on N4M'S.
Happy birthday, Chipmunk! Hope you are having an awesome day!
Thought I'd share a flower picture to brighten your day. This is our "Navy flower bed" that my sailor helped plant in the fall before he left for BC. <3
Velvetenor - I love the flower picture!! I like the Navy theme.
Northwoodsmom - I have enjoyed getting to know you as well. The greatest thing for me being on this site is the regular interaction I have with others from across the country and sharing with everyone's joys, struggles, pains, & weather. I feel like I am more connected than if I just watch the news.
Your younglings know your voice, And are comforted by your touch. You train up your Padawans in the way they should go, And as Knights they do not depart from the Light. The Masters are Shielded by the Force of your Love, So they may endure the attacks of the Fallen, And spread the Good News of Light to the Dark.
May the Force be with you on your Birthday O Grandmaster of Moms!
@ProudOfK: My son also graduated 2 years ago on Star Wars Day! Our Nukes probably know one another. What rate is yours? Mine is an ET. Electronics Technician, not Extra Terrestrial. Although, I don't know, sometimes I wonder.
I wasn't able to attend the graduation as I was attending to my mother who was recovering from knee surgery at the time. I was pretty disappointed to have missed it, but what can one do.
ProudOfK & Know Weigh - What a great grad date for our Nukes! Know Weigh - it is difficult to have to spread our time between our children and our parents.
SubMom - Thank you! It has been a very blessed day!!
NancyJo - He is so adorable!!
WearsLargeHats - I value my children's words and their inspired gifts that come from their talents or personality more than any tangible thing, but I will take those as well.!!
I got a chuckle out of your comment - in my case it would be Methodist (depending on your local congregation.)
Know Weigh - my son is an ET also. I’m so sorry you missed it. We were so fortunate in that it was absolutely the most perfect weather day - made the whole thing almost magical.
Good morning everyone, just wanted to share the wonderful surprise I received a few minutes ago. Apparently my very thoughtful daughter put me in a contest celebrating essential workers and they just called me and let me know that I was a winner. I am the food director and prepare meals for the kids. They sent me a gift certificate. That made my day extra special. Hope all of you get a bit of appreciation today no matter what you are doing.
Northwoodsmom WOW, congratulations and how nice on many, many levels. You have a great family who appreciates what you do and now the rest of your community does, too.
Velvetenor, "and with thy Spirit" is Rite 1, for more formal seasons. May the 4th is usually after Easter, so we would use Rite 2. My Sailor was an acolyte for many years, so he gets liturgical humor. That was something we emphasized: if you are on the acolyte schedule you will be there to serve. Good training for "15 minutes before 15 minutes before".
We were also band parents for about 6 years. That is good preparation for a future sailor as well. I have a bit of video from about 6 years before he enlisted where he was marching in a Veterans' Day parade playing, of all things, "Anchors Aweigh".
WearsLargeHats mentioned being a band parent and that it's a good preparation for future sailors. I totally agree! I, too, am a band parent. Four years, one year as a drum major. And two of his best Boot Camp buddies were also in marching band. Interesting, eh?
I wonder how many in this group were/are band parents.
Both of my boys were in band in middle school, but my older one, the nuke, went to an early college high school so he could have his associates degree along with his h.s. diploma and they didn't have a band program. It was mostly focused on academics, but he did get some swimming classes and theater. My younger one was in band all through high school playing trumpet. It's a lot of work for sure.
Hand wave here - Band Mom w/ Hubby - however our sailor was not in band, only our eldest and youngest of our 5. Sailor did wrestling, swim team, life guard, robotics, and a church related leadership program that was probably as tough and drill oriented as ROTC. - I also have worn the hat of dance mom, Pompon, cheerleader, gymnastics, and Taekwondo, as well as our church related activities - Sorry, I was just reminiscing.
All of the little preparations in life that our kids receive just by enjoying the things that ignite passion in them whether it be academic, sports, creative, or artistically oriented.
No band here - both my boys ran XC and track & field in HS. Youngest then ran 4 years in college and now coaches XC/T&F at the college level - Big10 - GBR! B was in a band though in high school but it was a screamo band and he was the lead screamer lol! They also played basketball and soccer. They kept busy and I was in charge of the booster club for XC/T&F while both of them were in high school. Those were some good times!
I agree, marching band is an excellent opportunity for kids to learn teamwork, leadership and responsibility. My sailor did marching band and they made the top 5 in state each year.
She was also an officer in ROTC and unarmed drill leader. He Sr Chief was and still is an incredible positive role model to her.
I miss being an active duty band and drill team mom.
Band mom here! My sailor was in band from the 5th grade through his senior year. Then he was Triple Threat in boot camp where he played also. The other son played soccer and wrestled so when they were in school we were very busy. Sometimes I still miss all the running.
Band mom here too,my daughter played sax and my sailor the trumpet. He always did the far off taps for Memorial day and at military funerals. He also got voted prom king and then senior year homecoming king, don't know why because he was kind of geeky but everyone liked him.
My sailor did not do band but has a good ear for music. He is a self-taught guitarist that plays a really sweet blues guitar and can play drums with a little skill. He was a very good athlete though.
I will say that there is a proven correlation between musical skill of any kind of math. My daughter and her ex-nuke husband are both nuclear engineers with beautiful singing voices. She also plays the piano. So, I'm not surprised to see all the band moms here. It all adds up! lol
Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page. Lots of good info there. Also take a look at the Pages (19) to the right under the member profiles - be sure to hit "view all". And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Thanks. I love Disney and Goofy, plus I can be a little goofy myself. My son just commisioned as a new Ensign and going Subs, so he'll be heading to Nuke School soon.
NancyJo - good point on the music and math. Our nuke had years of piano, was in choirs from 4th grade to graduating, and in middle school played the piano in the jazz band. The only reason he didn’t do jazz band in high school is that he was in the Jazz choir, the Chamber choir and Drama.
I simply LOVE that we're "bragging" about your children's skills!
So, I mentioned that my sailor was in marching band. In addition to marching, he was also in the orchestra playing clarinet. Last night I tracked down and listened to some of their performances. Not bad for a high school band. Christmas music in May. In addition to that, he taught himself how to play guitar and piano. We didn't have room for a drum set, so that wasn't an option. When not doing band things, he worked toward (and earned) a black belt in Kenpo karate.
If that wasn't enough, he ran track but mostly focused on pole vaulting. So I was also the pole vault pit Mama. After teaching math, I'd show up to the pole vault pit with snacks. What fun that was!
Working in a school I know the students that were involved in band and extra curricular activities were almost always in the top of their class. Standing right beside or behind them were loving parents supporting and encouraging them, so kudos to all of you helping our Nation to build a smart and powerful Navy by raising amazing Sailors, thank you. I only wish all of our students had the same opportunities with caring and supportive parents to achieve the same. God Bless all of you.

Two years ago today my son graduated from Power School. They dubbed themselves the Star Wars class. Hard to believe it’s already been 2 years.

Chipmunk, that is priceless!
The last few years my Sailor has been sending me texts for my birthday. They are better than anything he could buy.
If someone says "May the Force be with you" and you answer "And also with you", you might be an Episcopalian.
