If you are looking for a hotel room at really any of the hotels that are booked up I suggest calling them early morning, then again around 11 am. 2 or 3 pm and again around 7 and each time you call ask if they have had any cancellations. They always have some and you may be able to get the room at the place you want to stay.

For those wanting to bring civilian clothes: I would just wait and mail some to them. My daughter packed a whole suitcase before she left for boot and told me to bring it with me. I brought it because we drove and I had room. She looked through it and picked out 2 pair of jeans and a couple of shirts and said mail these to me and just pack up the rest with my other things. Then when she came home after A-school she went through it all and took what she wanted. They really do find that they don't need all that stuff and after they carry around 2 or 3 seabags they don't want anything else to carry lol. The most important thing she wanted was new undies. I guess granny panties are just not her style lol.

Congratulations to Saturday's Captain's Cup winners. Division 939 won in the integrated division competition and Division 247 won in the non-integrated division competition.

  • WadesMoM

Please clarify! BS21 starts tonight RIGHT???? NOT last night?
  • WadesMoM

Thats what I thought, but a mom called me earlier and wanted to know if I had gotten my call and of course I panicked!! I was NOT in a position to keep my phone beside me today.. I had arranged for tomorrow, but not today!

    Thanks Alicia!!

  • diannep

Ok, ladies.  Remember....we can't talk about Battlestations specifically on here!  Just private message.....

    But exciting times are coming!

  • diannep

Thanks, purplegiraffe!  Congrats to 939/247!  HOOYAH!

  • diannep

Christy:  Just know that many stay at the Ramada and are fine with it.  You probably won't be in the room much anyway...except your new sailor will want that LONG shower ALONE!  That is something they all are looking forward too....no more "buddy" showers!  :-)

When my son was there....he took his long shower, put his uniform back on, and had the door to the bedroom cracked.  I could see him leaning over, folding his "dirty" tshirt....ever so carefully!  Quite different from the way he folded his tshirts after washing them before he left (lets just say...they looked like he had slept in them many times!).  :-)

What a week you all are in for!!!!! Early congrats on those who will be receiving a call this week. Safe travels to those traveling to GL in the next few days.

That door opening up on Friday can be a tear jerker, knowing your SAILOR is right behind that door ready to march in, and trying to find them is somewhat of a "Where's Waldo" game.

Congratulations to all of you and your Sailors!!!!! Friday, here it comes!!

  • diannep

    Here's a peek!

  • Christy_Ship07Div242

diannep: Thank you:). I feel somewhat better after reading the post from members that have stayed there. Your comment is the very reason I wanna make sure its ok...I want my son to take a nice long shower in a clean shower. If he just wants to hang out and visit, I want him to be able to without being in a smelly, stale room. Your story makes me wanna hug my son right now!!! 3 more days!!!!!
  • diannep

Hoping to get some I'm a Sailor calls on here today!  939?

  • diannep

It will be here before you know it, Christy!  And that will be the sweetest hug ever!  :-)

  • Kurtmansmom

Congratulation to new SAILORS, we will meet at PIR 8/10.

  • diannep

Anyone heard from 939?  Since 245 went, we know that 246 went also.  Congrats to the news sailors!

  • diannep

Those waiting for phone calls....check your new sailor's FB if you can.  Some purchase computer time while waiting for the phones!

  • WadesMoM

I am just sooooo stinking happy for all of us!!!! I could not be more proud!!! Praying for our remaining SR!

YESSSS I have A US NAVY SAILOR!!!!!

  • SueCasa

I am new here and wish I found all of you in June! I keep missing my sailor's phone calls as he calls at strange times--like when I'm driving and the cell phone is in my purse so haven't been able to ask him questions! I can't wait to see him on Friday! He mentioned in his last message that he might not be going to A School right away-may have a week before he ships out to Florida. My husband said our new sailor should get his orders this week so we'll know more. Does anyone have ideas on if he'll come home or will need to stay at Great Lakes until he ships out?

We are flying into Midway Thursday afternoon and fly out Saturday evening. I have some shorts, undies, and t-shirts to take for lounging around the room. Should I be bringing civilian clothes for when he ships out, his cell phone, etc.? I'm clueless as to what he can have and what I need to bring.

There is a lot of great information on this site and I've already learned a lot! My sailor's name is Andrew, he enlisted in the Reserves, will be returning to college after A School, and should be based in Ventura. He said his bunkmate will be there also. Anyone else with a sailor from Southern California?

    Only a few more days!

  • ellen0502

SueCasa, your son won't be able to wear civies until he phases up to phase II at A School, it usually takes a about three weeks for that to happen. We took a pair of jeans and a couple of t-shirts for my son, that's really all he needed for a while. If you do take t-shirts, and they are white or blue they must have something printed on them, there can be no mistake that they are outerwear not underwear.

I would doubt that your son will be able to leave base for the week he is waiting to be sent to school. He can have his cell phone once he is no longer on the RTC side of the base, I would take it, he will know when he can have it.

I could be wrong on some of this though as I don't know much about the reserve side of things.

  • diannep

SueCasa:  FTLW's son is in the Reserves....PIRed a little over a year ago.  She would have info for you on this.

    Good morning all!

  • diannep

Ok, hoping for calls today from 247/248!  Maybe 949 too?  I thought they went Monday night, but haven't seen any posts about calls.  So maybe they went through last night.  Anyone know?

Post when you hear from your new sailors!

  • SailorMom92 (DIV 244)

Stressing:::: I am reading that there are some sailors leaving early Sunday morning rather than early Saturday morning. Does anyone know if this is the case for all of the graduating sailors. I know it probably depends on a lot of different things. My son is div 244 and going to Pensacola. Are there others going to Pensacola and leaving early sunday morning? Like everyone else, trying to get the last minute plans made.(2 memorial services, trying to help schedule around)

  • diannep

Jmaries:  Doubtful that all are leaving on Sunday....probably just some of them.

  • diannep

Safe travel for those leaving today!

Remember, get to PIR early!  You won't regret it!

You can take snacks with you and they also have limited items to purchase there.  Plan to be in the car line between 6 and 6:15 if driving; try to be on a shuttle by 6:30 or 6:45 if possible (shuttles bypass car lines).  Check out different seating in your division section....balcony?  Main floor?  Check out camera settings and experiment while you wait for PIR to start..

    But most importantly...ENJOY!

  • NavyMom Maria(Ship07, Div242)

Diannep- thank you during this time till our sailor PIR stay with us, gave us inform to whatever we have in mind, in good time and down time. May God bless you.

  • ellen0502

Safe travels everyone!! You are so close to getting the best hug ever!
  • SailorMom92 (DIV 244)

so now that we all have a Sailor-son/daughter/husband/wife-how are they known as?  Ex: SR Smith, John or SR Smith, Jane

  • diannep

You are very welcome Navy Mom Maria!

JmariesMom:  Depends on their job.  My son went from SR to SN (Seaman) because he was an E-3.  There is also SA (Seaman Apprentice) which are E-2's.  E-1s stay as SRs.  Others will be known as "Airmen".  Others are "Firemen."

    Others are "Constructionmen".

  • diannep

Hoping more calls start coming in soon!  Please post when you get these!

  • Justin's mom (ship9 div247)

My son is a Sailor. Woohoo.. so happy

  • nuclearpoweredmom/ship09Div247

Calls for 247/248 are coming in!

  • SueCasa

Jmarie, My sailor is also 244 and should be going to Pensacola. I'm really hoping for a phone call today/tonight so I have an idea of what he wants me to bring. Does anyone know if they might be able to call? We're leaving at o'dark hundred so need to finish packing tonight. Can't wait! His photos arrived---who is that serious young man?!?

  • SueCasa

I just heard from him. After having a special physical and x-ray, a slight curvature was detected so he is no longer eligible for aircrew. He is really excited to be a Seabee like his grandfather was! He will be in the holding unit for a couple of weeks and then will ship out to Ft. Leonard Wood. Can't wait to see him! Oh, and he can't wait for regular underwear! :-)

  • diannep

    Congrats to 247/248!

  • sam

Got a surprise call, while pumping gas, from my Sailor.  He will be leaving for Pensacola in the wee hours of Mon. Said he is going with a group.  Will work for a couple of weeks there before going to A School. Wants his phone, laptop and boxers!

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

SueCasa - Our son is a Seabee reservist as well...he is a BU.

Since your son will be "in holding" on RTC there is a name for it THU  - Temporary Holding Unit on Ship 5.

He may get the weekend for Liberty with you and will follow RTC liberty policies. Come Monday he will be assigned work to do during the week.
It is a good probability that he will be allowed his cell phone. One of the Sailors in my sons PIR had one on base and he asked him why he was able to have it. He explained that he was "on hold".
I do not know if he will be allowed other electronics...or what his next command allows as he will have to INDOC and then Phase up and all have slightly different policies. I would bring what he asks for and be prepared to take it home with you.

    Congrats and safe travels!

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

    Safe travels to you all!

I know this is late...but I will add a MAPS of RTC DIscussion up above...just in case.

  • SueCasa

FTLW--thank you so much for the great information! I'm still learning all of the Navy lingo--what is "BU"? Also, how long has your sailor been a Seabee, does he enjoy it, and how is it being in the Reserves?

  • diannep

Good Morning all!  Safe travel to GL today and enjoy the MeetandGreets tonight.

Remember, leave early for PIR!  Enjoy!

  • SailorMom92 (DIV 244)

suecasa, did you find out what he wanted you to bring?

  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW

SueCasa - BU is Builder. He just finished BU school last December. Seabees receive combat training along with their individual rating training...but I'm still waiting for that one with mine! Don't know when that'll happen.

As a reservist things move rather slow at times. One weekend a month to get all of the paperwork done. Mine was in Ventura as well...but now has a spot with a unit in Coronado. He was instructed to "apply" (?) for a unit and wait to be accepted...so that took six months. BUT I am glad that he is with a unit! Yes, he does so far...but he hasn't really done anything yet. LOL He had actually looked into SW-Steel Worker but that was not available.

How exciting that your son will follow in his grandfathers footsteps. My Father was a Lt.CMDR in the Navy (before I was born). You know...I don't know what his rating was though! I'll have to hunt that up.

  • ellen0502

I'm so excited for all of you. That hug you get after PIR is the best!!
  • FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW
