No we wont be going but Bridgette will be on duty that day so if you see her say hi have your grandson introduce you to her!

I will be there for deployment though to stand on the pier and wave her off as her hubby goes to boot camp on the 16th feb and they dont deploy till after so will be in san diego for about 3-4 days so if you will be there for that then I will see you then so have a great day!

  • navynana

Just returned from San Diego and what a fun day. Beautiful warm weather. We got the tour of the USS Comstock and all I can say is...too many steep ladders to climb. They're all kids and go up and down without using the handrails. I thought it was good that I could do it at all. We certainly had a few laughs. I did meet Bridgete and her hubby in one of the back hallways. She's so sweet. She took my daughter and granddaughter to the "female" bathroom. No guest baths there! Got to meet so many of the sailors and I could tell that those who's families are at a distance hung around us. So that was great. They had a BBQ lunch on the deck. They are all amazing young people. I am so glad we could go. A warm welcome from the Chief and Master Chief. ccNavyMom..I don't know your sons name so maybe I did meet him and didn't know. So Proud!
  • cheffiona

NavyNana glad you had a fun day and that you got to meet  Bridgette and her hubby the sweetness comes from me lol!!!  I will be there when the ship deploys so will get to see the ship then and meet some of the sailors then!  But im glad you had a great time what kinda infor if any did you find out about the deployment I know the countries they will be visiting but am not posting for obvious reasons but did you learn anything!

  • navynana

There was no discussion or mention about deployment. Yes Fionna..I have no doubt the sweetness comes from you! He'll be coming home next weekend and we've got to go down and bring back all the xtra clothes and things he has accumulated. When you are with them you realize how much you miss them. Hearing them laugh and kid with each other does your heart good.
  • cheffiona

The ship has no communications at the moment so you will not hear from your sailor via any way so check on fb where they will post when its back or you get a call from your sailor i think it is probably related to the problem they had the night before deploying where they were talking about not leaving if they could not get it fixed, but I guess they did! Anyway youtube video showing comstock leaving the harbor just google ships name and then where is says 2011 after name you will find the video you can see my daughter on the bridge level 4 in from the right about 1.02 and 1.30 minutes into the video.  Touring the ship 2 different times was awesome!  I had so much fun!

Hey Lehigh, I have a daughter out on the Kearsarge right now, too. She is a CTR1. We have a Kearsarge group on here too that is very informative and that is the group I usually check on. This is a very long deployment and it didn't help any that they left early and some of the group did not get last minute visits with family members that live apart from them. We will have to make up for it when they return. Getting shorter every day!
  • cheffiona

got email from my daughter so something must be working on the ship now new email addy and she is fine it was only one line lol but i know she is ok!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Amphib moms, I was ordering a Navy dogtag today and came across these "Proud Navy Mom" shirts - the company will put any ship on, just have to ask (I emailed and asked for the Kearsarge, and he responded almost instantly!) ~ Proud Navy Mom ship t-shirts

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

$24.95 (two dollars more if you want ladies' fitted style) and $5 shipping.  The owner is Richard Ruth, email rruth@navypictures.net if you have any questions...
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

You can get Navy Wife shirts too.  They also have a sterling Navy locket ($39.95), and a Navy dogtag ($5.95 incl chain, zipper pull or keychain, and choice of silencer color) that you can customize; I'm doing one for a friend, whose son is deploying, with her favorite quotation.  I have no connection with this company, just like sharing cool Navy stuff I find! :)  http://www.navypictures.net

My son has been on the Mesa Verde since early September. He hasn't been home since Christmas. We went up to Norfolk to see him the weekend before they deployed, and then I got to see him for about 10 minutes at the port in Morehead City while the Marines were loading.
  • LindaB

Johanna, Yes, my son wasn't on the Mesa Verde for the last deployment, but many of the people on board were. That was a short turnaround for them. When my son got to the ship, he was told it would not deploy until 2012, and the CO talked about sending him TAD to another ship for a while to get more of his quals. Then they found out last fall it would cover the San Antonio's deployment in July. Then in early March they were told they would deploy March 23. There was a real rush to get ready.

I have an 18 month old grandson running around in NC. Dad is a Marine and Mom is a Navy vet.  I surfe miss not having them closer. Oh well, that's military life.  And my son is in Korea teching English to elementary & middle school age kids. So he is really far away. he has been there since July, so coming up on a year. Our family  says this is a "deployment" for him. Easier to deal with that way.  All of you have a great Easter!

Here's something else to be aware of - Gossip Shuts Down USS Bataan's Facebook Page (NavyTimes.com)

"Loose tweets sink fleets, and as sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship Bataan learned, unchecked gossip can bring down a command’s Facebook page.

The Bataan’s page was shut down May 15, severing a major communication line to sailors’ families as the Norfolk, Va.-based ship continues its deployment in the Mediterranean. A page for at least one other ship may also be removed, as well."

I need a little help here.  I want to tell everyone to bring an item to pack for my son when he goes to SD .
We will have a party when he comes home between A school and his duty station (I guess that is what you call it) I need to know what a typical sailor needs.  HELP

  • navynana

Not much...best to travel light. They don't have much room for anything and have to be able to move it easily. A cell phone if he doesn't already have one. A laptop. movies/games. They have lots of fast food places on the base so maybe gift cards McDonalds. They can go through  $$$ if they eat out, which most of them do. A few casual clothes and tennis shoes. They can buy almost anything at the Nex.  Good Luck.
  • HisMom

thanks, he is pretty set on most of that except the gift cards.  Is there a website that tells about the base?  Can you get a gift card for the NEX?
  • HisMom

    wow thanks for the advice.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Does he have an iPad?  If not, how about contributions to an Apple gift card.  If he does, same thing but for the App Store?
  • Cheryl

There is also a Subway on base. Yes, the lighter the better, the rooms are small, so less is best.
  • HisMom

he does not have an electronic reader but that is a good idea That has been added to the list. thanks

  • Elane

@ HisMom, the dorm rooms in SD are not very big so nothing very large.  Mine shared a bath/laundry/kitchenette with 3 other guys so anything a value, he needs to make sure he secures. In that dorm they had a locking closet but small electronics disappear even when they are looking.  If the ship is headed out anytime soon, he will want as little as possible with him, they have small lockers for their stuff there. secure locks for those are a necessity. He will have to move out of any dorm to the ship when it deploys so the less stuff he has the better. The NEX will take credit/debit cards, preloaded gift cards, cash, etc.
  • HisMom

Elane-the son who knows everything packed a huge suitcase with stuff all the while momma was saying .....I don't think you should take all that stuff.  Let me ship it to you after you get there......  Nope gotta take it.  Got a call last night, went something like this......" mom, my suitcase just barely fit in the locker I may have to ship it home.....I may put some clothes in it as well....."  Wait till he gets the bill for shipping..... A mother is ALWAYS right.

  • HisMom

any news on the missing sailor?  gosh that is sad

  • Elane

Welcome home. (Boxer ARG)  USS Comstock, USS Green Bay & USS Boxer!   Glad you made it back safe and sound.   (Thanks Lee for holding my banner for me).
  • cocojazz

My son is on his way, as we speak, to join the USS Mesa Verde.  Not sure what to expect, but looking forward to getting to know some of you better through this experience.
  • mikes mom

Well let me welcome you to the USS Mesa Verde : ) My son is on that ship as well...

    Helllooooo Kathy : )

    Welcome home to all

  • Elane

I did make the gator Navy banner, myself.

  • LindaB

Cocojazz, my son is on the Mesa Verde also. Welcome. It's been a long deployment, and they have a while to go yet. We met him in Italy in August when the ship was in port at Taranto and he took a few days leave. That was nice.
  • Elane

@marine_navy mom,   Thank you.    I love to craft things, so sewing that was "right up my alley"
  • cocojazz

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.  Can anyone shed some light on a mailing address for the Mesa Verde so I can send my son a care package.  His birthday is next week, and I have no way of knowing where to send a package, or even a card.  :(
  • Elane

If the USS Mesa Verde is deployed ...who know how long it will take to get mail to it.. but this is the Mailing address listed online for the ship..

    USS MESA VERDE (LPD 19)
     FPO AE 09578-1702

you of course want to have your son's name and rate/rank on the top line and IF you know his work section list it on the 2nd line it will speed stuff up to him. ONCE it reaches the ship.  The Ship's name/# as the 3rd line, etc.     sorry to be a downer about the time it might take.   I know it takes 2-3 weeks for my son to get mail when he's IN port.  but he is always complaining about the lack of give a care personnel dealing with his mail.   When it's deployed..takes 7-10 weeks.  :(      I would strongly suggest you also get his email address and send him messages and ask that he get you on the Ombudsman's list of authorized people for them to "talk" too.   Good luck.
