So excited!!  My son is coming home Feb 1st!!  He's been in Guam since last March, it's been a long (almost) 11 months for this mom. He is looking forward to skiing, snowmobiling, & ice fishing we he gets here.  HE is going to freeze!! I can't wait to see him!!

  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

How exciting Devins mom!! My son has only been there 2 months and I miss him so bad! He is enjoying golfing and snorkeling. He doesnt enjoy the humidity....he is from the dry desert! Enjoy your visit. How long is he staying?

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

He will be home for about 3 wks!!  One of his best friends from high school who now lives in Chicago is also flying in to spend some time w/him. They haven't seen each other in almost 2 yrs. It will be great having them both home!!  Devin isn't a big fan of the humidity either but he does enjoy the beach life:)When he goes back after leave he will have another year in Guam & then who knows.

  • Irene McClure

How is everyone doing? We are hoping our bunch will be home by June. Which will be ok,then I will be on Summer break from work and be able to spend time with them.

Calling all Guam Moms & Friends!!!! Perhaps your sailor has adopted a pet on Guam or would like to. Or maybe you have a furry loved one he/ she misses at at home and can empathize with this situation.  Well, Continental Airlines is making a change that will negatively affect all pet owners traveling from the Asian Pacific. Please read below and join this effort:

Continental/United airline has announced that beginning March 2012, they will NO LONGER allow pets to be considered as excess baggage from Japan and the Asian Pacific Region, but will have to be transported as CARGO, which will cost from $1400-$4000 PER PET!!! Military families who have already sacrificed so much to defend our Country will now likely have no choice but to leave their beloved fury family members behind, permanently. Please go to both links to read more and sign a petition to fight this price hike. There is strength in numbers. Please share the link on your facebook page and email your friends and families too! If they get away with it for this region, what is to stop them from doing it with all flights? If you have any ideas on how to get the word out, please share your thoughts!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • LivNLrn

Thanks to the petitions and protests the last few days, military families are now EXEMPT from the huge rate hike ($1400-4000) to ship our pets home from Guam on Continental, which was supposed to begin next month! If you helped out with this, thanks a lot! You made a difference! Yay!

It's been a rough couple of days for me. I received a call from my son telling me that he was sick & that the Dr's he works with in the Gen. Surgery clinic had sent him to the ER. Long story short.....he is VERY sick! He picked up some sort of virus (which they have not been able to diagnose yet) & it sent him into septic shock. He is currently in ICU but his condition is improving. I have been able to speak w/him & 1 of his Dr's. I am going crazy not being able to be with him!! I am very thankful for his girlfriend who has been by his side & been keeping me informed. She is also a Corpsman so I feel comfortable receiving info from her. I so just want to hop on a plane to be there w/him. I know he is in excellent hands & receiving excellent care but that doesn't calm my mother instincts. Please keep him in your prayers.

  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Devins Mom....prayers definitely heading your way and his! I am sure he is in good hands! Take care and keep us updated!

  • LivNLrn

Irene, it has been such a pleasure knowing you and being neighbor to your daughter and grand. Everyone on our block that I am close to is moving now and I'll be on my own here from mid April until we leave in Oct.

Devin's mom- I will being praying for your son. I was in ICU here last year for two weeks and can tell you I was very well taken care of. And my husband was also in the base hospital for a week and was also well cared for.

  • luvinmatt

Christmas2006. I would love to have your coupons. I will be here for at least another 2-3 years. We are making it out mission to stay in Guam lol We really like it here.

  • LivNLrn

Wow! Luvinmatt, who knew when you first joined Guam Moms you would end up being so happy here! That is really great! :)

  • MustangMom (Ship03, Div 080)

Hello everyone...I am new to this web-site. My son is going to be stationed in

Guam and will be flying out May 31 assigned to the Frank Cable. He is in Norfolk now in C School. Will be coming home May 8 for 21 days before he leaves.

So, I am getting very anxious to see him but reallly apprehensive about him going to GUAM for 4 years. So, I am trying to learn everything I can about Guam. So, any information or web-sites you can pass this way, I would appreciate it. Is the Frank Cable still in dry dock? What cell phone service

    is available there?

  • LivNLrn

Luvinmatt, you know all the great info you posted about cell phones and other stuff here- do you think you can copy it into a new discussion forum for newbies to Guam?

  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Hi MustangMom.....my son has been in Guam since Dec. 3. He is really enjoying himself. He snorkels, golfs and just got Scuba certified! He had to get a new Iphone when he got to Guam. I forget the name of the Guam cellphone company (lovinmatt knows). We never call each other because we have an app on our iphones called Voxer. It is like a walkie talkie/text messaging app that is free! There is also one called Viber which is free calling. Both apps were free to download. We skype once a week then just text or voice message during the rest of the week. My son is not thrilled with the weather. Always warm and humid. We live in the desert of AZ and he is not used to humidity. My son will be in Guam until April of '15. His rate is IT what is your sons rate? Frank Cable is still in dry dock. I think your son will enjoy himself! :)

  • MustangMom (Ship03, Div 080)

Charlotte - Thanks for all of the good info. I am sure we will skype and I will check out the apps.  I am sure he will have an issue with the weather too. We are from Indiana and he loves the change of the seasons. He is excited to learn to scuba dive and he loves to golf. So, I am sure he will enjoy it there for a while any way. He is suppose to be there for 4 years. So, I am sure he will get bored eventually. I am excited for him,  but sad he will be that far away for so long.

However, I have started a "VISIT GUAM" account to go visit him some time. Right now, just cant wait to see  him in 30 days before he goes.  Thanks again!:)

  • luvinmatt

GTA is the cell phone company with Iphones

  • Irene McClure

I know I really enjoyed visiting Guam. If you get to go,you need to. My Navy Bunch is no longer there, they have been restationed in April. There is alot of American things out there. I know my bunch are glad to be back in the states, but I know there will be parts of Guma they will miss at first.

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

~~Carrol~~ so sorry for your loss.

  • MustangMom (Ship03, Div 080)

My son is flying to GUAM through Tokyo. He is on a tight flight schedule in Tokyo.

Does anyone know...Do you have to go through customs/immigration in Tokyo?

  • luvinmatt

No, if his flight is continuing on he wont have to go through customs/immigration. He will when he gets to Guam.

  • Irene McClure

How is everyone doing? How are your Sailors doing? Mine are settled down at their new station.   I just wanted to stop by and check on the Guam Navy Moms!

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

Hope everyone had a great Mother's Day!  Does anyone know if the Air Force has any type of site like this?  My girlfriends son is joining the  Air Force after graduation & I told her how much help "Navy For Moms" was for me.

  • andy

I just found out my son will be going to Guam. Can anyone tell me a little bit about their child's experiences there? We have been spoiled so far, as for the last year he was only three hours away. Now it is time to pay the piper, I guess. Any words of encouragement and/or advice will be appreciated! Has anyone visited?
  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

My son has been in Guam since Dec. He enjoys it. He hates the humid weather since he comes from the dry desert! He likes to golf and he is scuba diving certified, which he really enjoys. What is your sons rate? Mine is IT. He was recently flown to Portland Oregon and jumped on the USS Frank Cable  and they are currently sailing back to Guam.

  • andy

    Thanks for answering me, Charlotte.

My son's rate is MM.  This will be his first assignment.  He does not play golf, but maybe he will start!  He has previously been scuba diving, and had been certified, but I think it is possible that his certification has expired.  I think he would really enjoy doing that again.

It actually sounds pretty nice.  I hope we can get to visit at some point.

  • momof4 (Ship 02 Div 913)

my Son has been in Guam almost 3 years now, is home on leave right now :) He is also attached to the Cable.

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

My son just received his next set of orders......he leaves Guam in March & then off to Hawaii.. Happy for him, not so much for me:( Just wish he was going to be on the mainland. This year has not been a good one for us & I"m being selfish & want him closer. In March he got extremely ill & almost didn't make it. The Navy sent me to Guam to be by his side for almost 2 wks. Although he has recovered & is doing well, I'm still trying to get over everything. I guess I just need some time.....

  • Irene McClure

Hey Guam Moms!!! How is everyone doing? My Navy bunch are enjoying their new station (Cali). Most of the ones that were in Guam with my daughter and son-n-law have gone now to new locations. I still want to keep in touch with the Guam Navy Moms.

  • CaliMom (Maryann)

My son has been stationed in Guam since March of this year.  So far, so good for him.  As Charlotte's sailor does, my son plays alot of golf and goes scuba diving a bunch.  Generally he likes cold weather and mountains, but is finding that there are things to appreciate about a tropical island as well.

  • wenlower

Trying to find out if my son's cell phone will work in Guam.  He has Verizon.  Anyone have any advice?

    Thank you so much!

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

wenlower~~ Verizon won't work. He'll want to get a cell phone when he gets there.  My son uses GTA.

  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Wenlower.....Verizon will not work. We found this out the hard way. I called Verizon before my son left and they said he would be able to use his iphone from Verizon and just transfer his service but GTA said he had to purchase a new iphone. If your sone gets an iphone and you have an iphone you can download a free application called Voxer and you can text and send voice messages for free. My sailor did take his phone with him so he could stay in contact while traveling to Guam. What is your sons rate? Mine is IT.

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

Saw this quote on fb & just had to share:"I will cry without shedding tears, cringe without showing my fears, pray without moving my lips, dream always of incoming ships...for I am the mother of a U.S. Sailor." ♥

  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Sammie...he will need to get a new phone. My sons plan was to jailbreak his phone from verizon but the phone company in Guam said it won't work. I did send my son with his phone just so we could keep in contact while he traveled. But as soon as he got to Guam he turned it off! He later mailed his phone back to me and I put his phone number on hold with our Verizon account. I hope this makes sense and helps :)

My daughter is reporting to Guam at end of November!  She is so excited.  Can you tell me if it is a good idea to have them ship her car?  We are torn with this decision.  Also, is she better off staying on base or trying to find an apartment?  So many questions!  Is there anywone she can talk with to answer some of her questions?  Thanks so much!
