Sailor4her, I have two sons in the navy. Oldest one in for over 13 years. If there is anything I cando to help ease your fears, please ask. My youngest left over a year ago, and like you I thought I would never survive. Please know that she will be fine and make you a ery proud mom, which I am certain you already are. Again, if you have any questions, please ask.
This is my first time up here! My son arrived at boot camp 2 weeks ago from today. We have received the graduation information with his comments on it, but now "real" letter yet. Just wondering how long it usually takes. This has been a very long two weeks! :)
Ronette - my son LOVED Pensacola!! So much to do....as long as you keep your nose clean. Good Luck to him!! My son is Aircrew..AWV and training on the E-6B Mercury at Tinker AFB in OK!
My son is headed to Pensacola after BC. He arrived to GL on 7/27 and has PIR 9/23. I was wondering when they will be able to drive or have some free time during A school. His grandmom and aunt live close to Pensacola and would like to visit with him.
Michelle_ Most don't have their cars at A school. They have to phase up to get certain privileges.Phase one would be like being able to leave base but have to be back by muster. Phase 2 might be able to stay out later, phase 3 they could go for a weekend, etc. I don''t remember exactly what each phase was.My son was in San Antonio and said it was kind of like college with a uniform. It also depends on how long their school is as to what privileges they can earn.
we live in Pensacola and a lot of the sailors volunteer on Saturday mornings to come to the pee-wee football field and work for the day. I had the job of picking them up from base last year (my youngest son plays). I always get a kick out of talking with them and hearing them talk. It's a good way for them to get easy volunteer hours and all the free food they want. They also volunteer during baseball season. We have a local minor league team that brings them in to work. The Morale/Welfare/Recreation folks do a great job @ NAS P'Cola. Maybe I'll meet some of your sailors in the next few weeks!
My son Corey left about 3 weeks ago for deployment on the USS John Stennis for about 8 months. This is his second long tour and it doesn't get easier. He got married to the biggest sweetheart a month before he left and I know this is so hard on both of them. I am so proud of him the man man he is today and can't wait to talk to him when he ports. My prayers are with all the families of the men and woman that are on there with him. Thank you for all your doing and your service to our country.I Love and miss you Corey <3
My son is also on the Stennis for his first deployment and left behind his wife of 1 year and his 8 week old son, so wishing for time to fly for him to be home and yet time to slow so I can enjoy my grandchild while he is gone.
Pat......sorry it has not been a great experience for your son. I know it's hard for you, too. Just listen to him and let him talk it out....he may change his mind before February gets here. I saw it happen both ways when we were stationed in Norfolk when first married. We even had a couple friends who got out only to re-enlist months or year later. Unfortunately.....our economy is in pretty bad shape. I'll pray for your son...
Pat - my Navy son is 22 and while he has moments of adult behavior.....he still makes some wrong decisions....or some I would not agree with, but his choice to join the Navy has been one of the best he made. I'm not sure there will ever be a time when I don't want to guide my sons or make decisions for them. It's natural when we love them so much.
Cathie - what rate is your son? Does he want to make this a career?
Diane - yep, I'm in Solon. We meet monthly and change the locations to make it easier for everyone. Out picnic was in Canton. We also have an Ohio Navy Families group on Facebook.
We didn't decide on the next get together.....but, I'll be sure to let you know. We also keep a list of our Navy kids' birthdays...we pack birthday boxes to send them. It's been fun for us! I'll let you know about that.
Oh.....almost forgot....we were talking about going to an Indians' game. I couldn't make it last year and hope to get there this year.
We always used Rank for the pay grade. At least when my my first husband was in the Navy. I always think about that when I ask so someone doesn't think I'm being nosy asking how high or low their sailor is in rank. lol! I have not had a lot of luck finding people that have a sailor with the same job as my son, so I'm often asking. But, my son is loving it, so I guess that's most important.
Sue, Hi, our son will be going to the Enterprise soon. The Big E was placed in the ship yard, so all were safe. I am not sure where all the Sailors went, I thought they were to report to the ship. I am sure by now you have heard from him and all is well. We are blessed that it wasn't as severe as first suspected.
Angela, that is beautiful, tell your brother THANK YOU!!! Tears and chills come to me as I watch the photos that I have seen so many times in the past. Wow!!
Had a great time at PIR. Wish I had gotten a little bit better video. Was up in the balcony and people walked in front of me when I was trying to zoom in on the march in. But, I guess it adds character! My son laughed when he watched it. We got him to smile after Anchors Away and got it on video! OOPS! Great moment. It's something I will forever remember!
A sailor was killed Sept. 9 while on patrol in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced Sunday.
Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class (FMF) Brian K. Lundy, 25, died while conducting a dismounted patrol in Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Since March, Lundy had been assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Lundy, of Austin, Texas, enlisted in 2006 and had earned the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He also received the Navy “E” Ribbon for his service aboard the carrier Ronald Reagan, which he served aboard between November 2006 and July 2008.
He is considered "Enlisted" the moment he raises his right hand and takes the final oathe before heading off to boot camp. He takes his ASVAB, signs his papers, goes through medical a few times, signs more papers, goes through medical for a final time, takes the final oathe and he then belongs to the U. S. Navy! There is so much they go through prior to going to boot camp. Congrats all around!!! Enjoy the ride with all of us!!
lol ok, well, He graduated on 9/9 and is now in A school. He is undesignated and is shipping out on Oct 11 for the Iwo-Jima. Hoping to be E3 by next week, he missed it in BC due to 10 sit-ups (pulled a muscle). It's been an interesting and informative, life changing experience so far. So many doors have opened, not only for him but for us as well. Like you all, SUPER PROUD of my son. Can't express it!
What is official title for sailors once they graduate? My son stays in Great Lakes for another month then to Norfolk. Can I still send him letters to the old address?

LOL Suzi... I wasn't sure if you meant rate or rating. Rate is the pay grade and rating is the occupational specialty.
His rating is AWS.
