Hello and welcome, does your son have a cell phone. I text or talk to my son via voxer which is a new app on most new cell phones, you can download this app. Try emailing your son and ask him if he has this. I would send family pictures, anything you know your son likes, cereal, candy, cards of well wishing. He might be really busy at this time, email or fb him and ask when are his off days. I hope this helps Good luck!
My son is not a great talker, he is quiet. I find I do best when I ask him questions. He has a prepay phone (as he wasn't buying another iphone) so I can text him or I have the # and can call him with my calling card. It is hard not hearing from him, but he is happy and that is what I want for him. My son is single and it feels like he is out there all alone, but he isn't, they are a family. thinking of you sethsmom!
We don't know if he has a phone. He did at one time but he might have cancelled it because it was expensive. He contacted us via skype in early january. It seemed as though he was in a booth of some kind. We have tried emails to both personal and navy addresses but get no responses. Do you know if we send him a phone card can he use it to call us. Do you have to have a smartphone to use voxer? The holidays were hard especially when we didn't here from him. Seth isn't a talker either. We didn't expect lots of contact but no contact is very hard. We are so proud of him. It took over a year and lots of tests and patience to get in. He never stopped trying or believing. We hope he is making some good friends. Thank you for the suggestions. How do you know how long they will be there? Seth mentioned being approved for engine school but doesn't know when he will go. He also mentioned "quals" and petty officer exam. Is this a long process? How do you know when that takes place? we saw pics on the facebook page for GW a PO advancement ceremony.
Sethsmom, his phone from the states won't work. They are locked by the provider :(. So my son put his on hold, but wouldn't invest in another. So he just bought a prepay phone there.
Thank you lmnadelady! I do feel a little better. Reading all the posts lets me know I'm not the lone ranger. It's also good to find out about the plane fares and ability to change without fees. With additional info may be able to get better contact if and when he does make contact.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to determine what area/unit/division (idk what they are called) your son is in? Because we have so little contact we feel so blind. We scour every picture posted with the hope of getting a glimpse.
This may be a very simple question, but I don't know. Can I send my son a Visa gift card and would he be able to use it in Japan? His birthday is coming up and I trying to put together a gift. You know how hard it is to buy for these military men. LOL
Your son could use the visa gift card at the NEX - Navy Exchange on the base and hotels in Tokyo. The NEX at Atsugi is a big department/grocery store and has everything. He could always cash it in.
Navy Mom, thanks for the response. He likes to do something special on his birthday, while he was in Pensacola for A-school, he wen sky diving. But is hard to give to plan something special from here LOL. Should be an interesting birthday week. I found out the first week of May in Japan they close everything down and the Japanese go and visit the graves. Now that doesn't sound like something to celebrate to me.
katlanta... that is neat! On fb there is a Japan moms group but some of them said they don't come on N4ms much,if at all. To me that's sad because we ALL need to be there for each other by whatever means necessaryr!
Hi Moms...haven't posted in a while but I do keep up with the postings frequently. Congrats to all who had their sailors home (on leave) recently, and to those whose sailors are heading home soon...I live for that day :)
I have to say I am a bit nervous about the current situation with North Korea and I say a special daily prayer for all our sailors in that part of the world. My husband and I are Navy Vets and never anticipated this when our son (the lil guy - as I like to call him) joined. But I know he is with the finest fleet there is and take comfort that those guys and gals will always have each others' backs.
God bless, protect and guide each and everyone of our sailors and soldiers!
And to all my Navy Moms...hang in there, this too shall pass :) Our kids...they got this!
Hi ladies, I haven't posted in quite a while, but do keep up by reading what has been posted. I would like to tell you about my surprise 3 1/2 weeks ago. Well, Trey's leave was cancelled, like everyone else. So I figured we would see him
when he finished his duty in the fall of this year. Well on March 16th, at 11:30 p.m., the television in the living room came on and started blaring. I went in to ask my daughter why she was in so early from her night out on the town. When I turned the corner from my bedroom to the living room, I started screaming at the top of my voice. Sitting in my recliner was TREY. I couldn't stop hugging him and crying for about 15 minutes. The little sneaks had planned to surprise the family when they found out Trey's leave had been approved later. My daughter drove down to New Orleans from Baton Rouge to pick her brother up
at the airport and came in and surprised us all. We have had a wonderful 3 1/2 weeks with him, and he is headed back to the ship now. I hadn't seen him in 2 years so this was the best surprise I have ever gotten in my life. While he was here, his new fiance' flew in from Oregon and we got to speand a week with her. She is a wonderful girl and we are proud to welcome her into the family.
Trey gets out in the fall of this year, so putting him on the plane today was not as hard as the last few times. Just had to share the surprise with ya'll.
Does anyone know where the sailors are supposed to go to get help with travel arrangements? My son hasn't done this before and doesn't know where to go. Yes - he got his first approval!
I have made both my Sailors travel arrangements for them. Traveling from Japan I have always used American Airlines. If you should make the arrangements for him make sure you allow for travel time. I always ask them when they have to check back in from leave. I usually have their travel back start at least 2 1/2-3 days before due to the time difference. That way they would get back the day before and can somewhat try to get rid of their jet lag.
My son just moved on the ship last week, been in Japan since Feb 28, and he just gave me his address. However I am not sure how to start it. He is a MM and is E1. In BC it was always SR, Last, First. He doesn't know and I want to make sure to have it right. Thanks!
Our sailor is home! Surprised us a day early, having a great weekend! Next weekend is the wedding, then they go for a week in the Bahamas before he goes back to the G-DUB. Can't believe he's here!
My new daughter-in-law just got back from her 3-week visit with my son. She must have had a good time because she came back PREGNANT! I'm going to be a grandma! lol. (I knew it!!!)
I haven't had a chance to hug her yet, as we live three and a half hours away. But hopefully we'll plan a trip to see her soon, so we can hear all about her travels and see some pictures!
That was the fastest three weeks ever.....my sailor is back in Japan safe and sound.....cried for two days.....counting the days until the next leave!!
I am so happy to read that so many of us have had the joy of having our sailors home for a visit. Ours came home at the beginning of March. What a joyous reunion it was! Even now it brings tears to my eyes to remember how good it was to hug my daughter. Really hug her! For those of you still waiting for that wonderful time, be patient. It will come and be so worth it. We had to share time as most of our family lives in So Cal and we live in Nor Cal but again, that time of loving on our daughter and hearing the stories about life on the GW, working the flight deck and traveling around the world - priceless! As has been said by others we are counting the days until the next leave. Blessings to you all and God bless and keep all who serve especially those on the GW!
TexasSailorMom - they're adorable!!!! Thanks for sharing and congratulations to all of you
AaronsMom - Congrats to you too. A grandchild to look forward to how exciting!
So nice to hear about Sailors getting to come home! My son has only been in Japan for about 5 months now so it will be awhile before he gets to come home but I'm truely blessed that he calls me every week. I just love it when the phone rings in the morning!
Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. It's been raining here for the last two days but suppose to be nice today so hopefully the yard will dry out and I can start mowing.
Put our son on his flight back to Japan today. : ( Intercontinental Airport in Houston was great, they let all seven of us go back to the gate with him! New wife is staying stateside for now. Great visit! great wedding! sad to see him go!

Have a great day all, spring has sprung here...the dafadils and tulips are beautiful and the lilacs and peonies are yet to come :).
Thanks everyone for the shipping information. I can't wait to put my first box together for my son. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for your help. I'm still learning how things work.
I just sent my son and his squadron 3 big brown boxes today. Total 86 lbs and it cost 150.05 for postage. The postage is totally worth it to me. Because I can get more in them. I can't wait to hear of his travels and adventures. Can anyone tell me what they do from the time they land in Japan til they report to their ship? Do they stay on board ship the whole time they are in Japan?
LouisvilleMom - Hugs to ya. We all know how you feel. Watching my son get on that plan was so hard. I tried fighting back the tears because he was so excited about going to Japan but instead I was a blubbering mess! We're here for ya! My son has been in Japan for 5 months now and loves it. He especially loves the food and is always trying something new. He called me yesterday with a cute little story. Him and his buddies tried a new place, the fish was on ice outside the restaurant. The menu was only in Japanese so they couldn't order off that so the waitress took them outside pointed to the fish and then would point to the price on the menu (he's got the yen figured out) Anyhoo, he has no idea what kind of fish he ate but said it was awesome the best he's ever had. He was still hungery though after eating the fish and I said "Well didn't they serve any sides with your meal?" His reply "They probably had sides but since none of us could read the menu we didn't order any, all we got was one fish" LOL
Katlanta - Soooooo how's it been having your son home? I hope you two have been having a great time!
Hope everyone has been having a wonderful weekend! Hugs and blessings to you all.
Joshmom, So funny! Can't wait to hear and share stories like that from my son. Thanks for the day brightener!
Katlanta Thank you so much. This information really put my mind at ease. Hope I hear from him before the week is out. Discovered he left his dress shoes here at home. Tried to let him know before he got on the plane so he would not panic and would have time to buy another pair before he needed them. Not sure he got the message.
The 3 boxes that I sent to my son and his squadron VFA 102 on 5/3/13 he got today. YEAH!!! I think this was the shortest amount of time it has taken any boxes I have sent to get to Japan. There are some happy SAILORS tonight.
Got a question for those of you who have been around here a while. I bought a large world map to keep track of my sailors travels. Since this will be his first deployment are you able to find out where there go (well at least after they been there)? I follow the GW Facebook page. Do they keep you informed of places they've been? My son thinks it's neat I'm doing this he even made suggestions such as different colored push pins for each year and taking string to track each deployment route. So as you see I'm really hoping I'll be able to keep track of him. Thanks for your help!
Joshmom, my son gave me a map the year he left.for basic We framed it and mark each place. Looking forward to the next cruise and hoping to get new spots to mark. They see the world and serve our country well. :)
katlanta, I tracked my son back to Japan at Christmas. Initially he was suppose to leave at noon, but weather interrupted in DC. So I went to bed with him over Toronto and woke up with him north of Tokyo. :) Isn't technology wonderful!
ATTENTION ALL TEXAS & ARKANSAS FAMILIES !!!! A sailor has been severely injured in a motorcycle accident on Saturday night here in Oklahoma City. He is 23 years old tomorrow & had to have 150+ units of blood to save his life. The family has set up blood donations in his name in OK, TX & AR. You can go to the following website to find locations...obi.org .... txbi.org .....arkbi.org Thanks for all your help in supporting one of our own!!!! ... http://www.obi.org/www.obi.org

The family has set up blood donations in his name in OK, TX & AR.
