liongirl-my son was a Seabee at PIR and he was not Grad and Go-
  • Kelleypen

What does grad and go mean?
  • LynB

Grad and Go is when a sailor goes through PIR and then is immediately sent to their next assignment (A school). They may only have a couple of hours after graduation before they are packing up and heading to the airport.
  • Kelleypen

Ah, ok. My son had three days, but some of his graduating class had to leave immediately.
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

cudawn I hope the same thing happens with us but all the moms in div 331 and 332 are all saying their SR's are G&G, so who knows but how can you make your return travel plans when you don't know anything makes me kinda mad, if he ain't around I don't want to be stuck up their with nothing to do.
  • Kelleypen

liongirl--don't worry about being stuck with nothing to do. Chicago is wonderful. Spend as much time as the Navy allows with your grad, then enjoy the city. We went to the museum of art, the aquarium, the Sears tower, Wrigley field, the Navy Pier . . . People were really nice too, especially when we had our son with us. Jazz players would see him in uniform and change what they were playing to a hymn or a patriotic tune. Total strangers came up to him to shake his hand and thank him for his service. It was really awesome.
  • LynB

Kelley that's what my son said...I couldn't be there for his PIR but he had a great weekend out and about with his new buddies and mentioned how surprised he was that so many people thanked him for his service etc. Said he figured it would be old hat for people living around RTC!
  • Jaz04

liongirl, you may be able to spend time with your SR at the airport too. So if he is G&G, find out what time they are going to the airport.
  • Jaz04

Does anyone know if students are allowed their vehicles on base after A school? My son wants to take his down there so badly and I am trying to talk him out of it as we know he will be deployed at some point.
  • RobinM

My son was allowed to take his truck down to Gulfport with him after A School. No problem at all. Trust me if he's going to Gulfport, it will be good for him to take it so he can get off base if he wants without taking a cab. There's not a whole lot to do on base really...or places to eat and such. Plus they are so close to the coast...great place to sight see!!
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

My SR did tell us to meet him at the airport and we could give him his cell phone there but what I want to know is can we only walk with him to the security line or are we allowed to wait with him at the gate, somebody please tell me the gate or I will be heartbtroken!!
  • Jaz04

liongirl, I have heard you can go to the gate.

Thanks everyone on the car information. My son will be so happy as he hates the cost of the cab.
  • RobinM

liongirl, we were allowed to go to the gate with our son. He was able to go through like the employees security line or something and we had to do the normal security things, but he just went and got us passes that let us back with him until he left. I would have been the same way if I hadn't been able to go to the gate!!
j'mom...how are you doing? Yeah our son is in Gulfport and doing well. He likes it but his sinuses and allergies have been giving him fits. Otherwise he's good. He's likely deploying in December, so we hope to see him a couple of times before then. How's your son doing?
  • RobinM

j'smom. Sorry to hear about the girlfriend thing. I'm thankful our son didn't have that going on when he left. Hope things get better for him. Dylan had a buddy he met in A school get stationed down there with him in the same battalion. He was pretty excited about that as well.
  • Kelleypen

Son's paternity leave is over on Tuesday, then it's back to deployment. I think it will be even harder now, but I'm glad he had this time with his baby.
  • hotflashes

hello all, my son just graduated BC and is now at Port Heuneme,he arrived there yesterday, is there anyone here with a sailor at the same port? I looked above at the discussion forum but the comments on Port Heuneme are pretty old.

  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

    Nitabee, I love the rose:)
  • hotflashes

ty Lionsgirl & Robin. My son said he has to wait for class to begin until they have enough for a class. He asked me to send his laptap and I did, but I just heard from another group that Fedex is not allowed. Will they
deny delivery? and why isnt that mentioned somewhere or did I miss it?Robin, I am sure I will have lots of questions but it is too early, havent had my coffee yet, LOL I think I will friend you and Liongirl. PiR is great Liongirl! We will both be new together!
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

Nitabee my BD is 8/28 so I missed being a Leo liongirl is just a screenname I pulled out of thin air when I was trying to think of a screen name, I have been looking for a cool decal with the bee but I would like it to say Seabee Mom do you know where I could get one?
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

Robin, Thank's for being on here I will have a million questions to ask as time goes on, the first one is can we visit them at A school and where do they live or stay while in school?
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

HotFlashes, I look forward to our many chats we will have I guess I have a lap top question too, my SR does not have a lap top yet but in one of his letters I told him I wanted to get him one so I told him he had to do some research when he got to A school and pick one out and I would pay for it and have it sent to him but I'm wondering if I should just get one before PIR give it to him at the airport and call it good. I also need to know what kind of internet access do they need he has a Verizon cell and they do have that stick thing (can't remember the proper name) would that work over in Port H?
  • Tobianne

    Good morning ladies...
I am finally able to say that my girl is on her way to being a Sea bee. She leaves Monday morning for Sheppard AFB.
I know she is going to a have a long road ahead of her, once there she will at some point have to have surgery. She is trying to deal with that. She is also excited, a very close friend of hers is doing his A-school there however he is in the AF. This does not matter to her, she says I just get to see him.

Decals, I have looked also. My younger girls are getting the pillow pets (its a bumble bee I think) and they want to get their sister one also and send to her.

So our next journey begins and at the same time, my journey has restarted at GL. My son arrived on Monday to start his BC.
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

Tobianne, prayers for your daughter that her surgery goes well and prayers for your son at boot camp, you will have to tell me if it's easier the second time around because you know waht to expect, although I would think not. This is my first time with BC and I don't know if I could go through it again it has been tough.
  • hotflashes

Tobianne, I hope your daughter gets well soon and I will keep her in my prayers. It is not easy when they are away from home.
  • Tobianne

Understand that. My daughter was suppose to PIR on 8/13!! She had been moved to RCU for a n infection and fever of 102.8 and then they found 2 abscesses. These had to e dealt with, one was removed so it could go to the lab and the other drained daily. Then came the fact she was still having a hard time with her run, she was sick for about 2 weeks with meds daily. Then the jaw cropped up and reared its ugly head. soft diet and a splint, iron pills daily that made her sick, as well as they were having her drink ensure.

Yes I am actually wanting the normal BC this time.... lol
  • hotflashes

liongirl, yes, we will have a lot to talk about. As for the laptop, my son grad on 9/17 and left for Ca on 9/21. He was not allowed to have the laptop so I had to send it. Verizon is good, I already checked because that is what we have, so that was easy, no need to change service. Yes, we can visit. We plan to visit when he has a weekend off, hopefully around Thanksgiving.Right now he is sharing a room , but said his mate is grad next week so he will prob get a new roommate. Maybe they will meet each other because he has to wait for the next class to begin when new Sr arrive. Hopefully we can learn together on what to expect.
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

WOW!! That sounds just horrible, that would have made me crazy, I really hope she does well, and thank God the Navy does have good medical care.
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

Hot flashes if I can pull the $ together I was thinking of doing a thanksgiving trip too it will be his first holiday from home and I would hate to see him spend it alone, he is Grad and Go and leaves the night of PIR, I wish we could have spent the weekend together.
  • Jaz04

Tobianne, my son had an abcess too and waited til half way through A school to get it taken care of. Not a good idea. He said there was no way he was getting held back. But he is doing much better.

Does anyone know what he will have to do to get a military discount to come home after A school? I am looking at tickets now for me to go to his graduation. But would like for him & I to be on the same flight home.
  • hotflashes

my son had to be back early Fri nite for watch and our flt left sat afternoon, but what time we had was great! he was born on Thanksgiving day, the date changes every year, but we still celebrate on Thanksgiving so it will be different this year for us too. We will survive!
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

In November I would love to send him a BD card you can email me @ liongirl352002@aol.com my youngest was almost a thanksgiving baby 11/21 but I still tease him and tell him I found him among the frozen turkeys at Wal-Mart.
  • Kelleypen

If you need a seabee mom bumper sticker, go to www.zazzle.com and design your own. That's what I do to get mine. They aren't even very expensive.
  • LynB

Liongirl - re laptop purchase logistics...he may be able to buy one at a nice discount at the base store. My son is still in GL and went and bought himself one up there.
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

Lyn, Great idea this way he can get what he wants. Thank's
  • hotflashes

Cancer the crab, thank you so much for that info, it does make me feel better. It is a wonderful idea! Do they normally have time off for Thanksgiving? I still hope to get there but just in case... I will look into this.
  • seashnoel60

Hey all I would like to know if there is any seabee moms in Colorado. I live in Aurora would like to know. Just would like to say it is so nice to have a group of people that I can talk about my son being a seabee.
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

  • seashnoel60

just another question I keep hearing a beep when I am in or commenting am I just imagining it or is there something to it?
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

Your not imagining it, I turn my speakers off or it would drive me nuts, I have no idea what it could be.
  • julieb

OMG I was shopping at Target and found a Sailor Nutcracker. They have many different themed ones but I about died when i saw the sailor. He is kind of ugly he is cute. Just thought I'd pass it along.
  • Much Trouble

Liongirl and Seashnoel, it has something to do with a chat feature on N4M. At the bottom of this window, on the right side, there are three little symbols. Click on the one all the way to the right (with a green dot) and the dot will turn red and the chirping or beeping will stop.
  • seashnoel60

    Liongirl3502
You will love PIR we went a couple days early and enjoyed the little town, but when you get to graduation take kleenex. I said I would not but you know how it goes. They sell a Cd of graduation Ait is worth it.
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

    Jean,
I would love to do Holiday cards I am new to all of this so let me know what I have to do.
Seashnoel, I plan on taking a truck load of Kleenex I cry just watching a PIR clip on you tube and my kid isn't even in it.
  • hotflashes

Liongirl, count me in on the cards too! I cant say it enough, PIR is Awesome!! It gets very emotional when they open the doors and the sailors march in! WoW, what a sight!
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

That's the part that always gets me on the you tube clip, he is going to look so beautiful, even though it's not proper to say that about a male.
  • seashnoel60

What is the card idea? What ever it is count me in.
  • liongirl3502(ship10Div331)

JEAN C, do you want to lead us in this? I also belong to a yahoo group called Navy Moms they are a wealth of information I will ask them if there is a way we can get addresses for SeaBees. Seashnoel, if we can pull it off we would like to send holiday cards to SeaBees that are deployed.
  • joj

My daughter and I would also like to be involved with the cards. What a great idea.
  • Much Trouble

I agree that the cards are a great idea, but where do we start?
