so very true we will always loose sleep, snot dripping with crying days. All we can do is love them and remind them that home will always be there with wide open arms and rooting for them every step their military career takes them!

  • Fonda

I felt it coming and tried to ignore it, but it was just to hard. Three days before my son left I started crying. I had this dread. It was the hardest day of my life. What made it even harder was trying to console my eight year old daughter who is very close with her brother. I was like I can't even console myself. I was never a parent who wanted their kids out when they turned 18. I guess I'm entering a new phase of momhood.
  • Wheatonpup

Hi Fonda,  I hear you.  My son left for Boot camp March 1, 2016.  He told us it was going to be March 21.  I got the call at work on March 1 that he had to be at the recruiter's office in 1 hour to be sworn in!  I didn't have time to cry!  It was tough and I cried a lot when he was in boot camp.  I have to tell you that it DOES get better in time.  My son in in Japan now and the one thing that always consoles me is that I know where he is. When he would go out with friends at night and stay out late, I always worried... So I hope this helps...

  • PeppermintJoeysMom

Wheatonpup- Thank you for sharing i love to read everyones experience and where they are!

  • Gijoesgirl

Thank you all for being here with me through this tough experience! I feel like I didn't breathe for 2 months. After, yesterdays call I am breathing. Also, sitting at the Denver Airport waiting for our next flight. Hooyah!!!
  • Fonda

Wheatonpup Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I'm looking forward to the getting better part. I don't know what I would have done if my son had left sooner than expected. I would have been a total hot mess!
  • Fonda

    Gijoesgirl! Congratulations! How exciting!
  • Gijoesgirl

Thank you, Fonda! God bless you throigh this journey!

The same type of thing happened to me Wheatonpup-my son's "date" was Mar 12. He thought that meant that he would be sent to MEPS on the 12th. He called me at work on the 11th, TOTALLY freaked out.I screwed up mom! I gotta be to the recruiter then to MEPS in 2 1/2 hours! His Dad & I freaked out with him. Left work, grabbed little bro from school. We had to run home & pack him an overnight bag because he had to leave that minute to the recruiter's. One silver lining-we  dodged the other families that wanted to go with us to see him off. So we got to cry in private, haha.

I received my son's form letter his graduation date is set May 19, 2017 his ship is 6 Div 158.  Can't wait for a letter or a call from him.

  • Sunshine

Does anyone know if it's ok to send a colored picture? My little girl colored a picture and wants to send it to my sister that got to boot camp on March 20 and I know they can receive letters but I didn't know about pictures. Thanks!
  • PeppermintJoeysMom

Sunshine- I've sent my SR colored pictures from his little sister and printed pictures, they don't have much room but I definitely would.

  • gonnamissmykid

    My-Son-Bug he left March 21

  • CeCe

Thanks for sharing. Mine left the 21st and I haven't received the form letter yet.

  • ProudRN

CeCe- fingers crossed you get it today... Thanks for the info, it's looking like I could be May 26th.

  • Micheled

My SR wrote in a letter than he got a 4.1 out of 5 on the first of three tests. Does anyone know if that is a good score?
  • nanaO

I've been OOC (out of contact) since I'm drowning (an appropriate word for a Navy Nana, huh? :P ) in school work - grading, testing, posting end-of-term grades, and surviving the week before Spring Break (the 8th graders in particular have 'checked out' of school :P, tho' their bodies remain in plain sight :) ) :D I also teach 6th grade - BOTH math (I'm only good up to pre-Calculus, so no 'nuke' questions, please)  My daughter got a letter from her SR and he's doing well, tho' now totally understands why people say Boot Camp really stinks!!  Apparently he's got himself a job on the ship's staff, so he's not harassed quite as much <3 My sister passed away on the 11th, so that's another reason I was out of touch for so long ... and we still have 1 full trimester at school (which calculates to 57 more school days!!!)  I just pray for my grandboy (so named Baboo by muah!) and know he's in God's hands more than any others',that he'll learn everything he needs to and more, and he'll be okay ... sayonara and adios until another day

  • nanaO

PS -- I've written him a nice long letter, and know that as soon as he can, he'll return one to me <3

squirel69, your recruit is eligible for medical benefits and has been since he was sworn in at MEPS on the way to the RTC. Here is what I have concerning medical insurance in Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for...Although your future Sailor is covered by Tricare health insurance from the day s/he swears in at MEPS on the way to the RTC, I suggest that you don’t drop your Future Sailor’s health insurance until after PIR. If something happens and s/he is sent home, s/he may have trouble getting health insurance, so this is one case where I say to plan for the worst case situation when I typically tell loved ones to plan to attend PIR on time and don't think about the possibility of being sent home or a delayed PIR. Check with your agent to see how easy it would be to add him/her back on if s/he were to be separated and if your policy allows dependents to be added at any time, then you may be able to remove him/her from the policy once s/he has sworn in at MEPS and is on the way to the RTC. Being separated from the armed services is not a qualifying condition that allows a person to be added on outside of the regular enrollment time for many policies.

  • lemonelephant

Micheled, yes, 4.1 is good. The higher the score the better, but 4 and above is good.

pixie'maid - ditto, ditto and ditto....except I only got 8 days notice and our "end of June" became Feb 8th. Love my boy more than life and I won't lie...the unexpected "forced change" hit me hard. On pins and needles now waiting for the "I'm a Sailor" call. I can't even sleep knowing I get to travel to Great Lakes next week to see him after his PIR. Then it's Nuke school in Goose Creek, SC. Best wishes to you all!
  • pixie'maid

GTsMim:  EIGHT DAYS? Dang! That would have traumatized me! I'm so proud of my kiddo and the not being able to communicate with him has been the worst part. I'm used to not seeing him for more or less a couple of weeks at a time but I've always been able to text or call and his bands always practiced at my house because this is where the drum set is! Can't say that I miss the band practices (punk/metal) but I DO miss his face and hearing his voice. Excited for you that you'll be getting his call soon!

  • lemonelephant

squirel69, you are very welcome. He probably has a calling card since most recruits buy on at the NEX. See  Phone Cards and Phone Calls.

All too soon, our liberty weekend with our new sailor is winding down. Just wanted to put this out there for all who are planning your PIR weekends. We went into Chicago on Saturday using the Metra train. I had read on here that our sailors ride for free on the weekend if they are in uniform. On our way into the city, he was not asked for a ticket. However, on the return trip, the ticket agent said he must have a ticket, but it is at a reduced rate.  There was no ticket agent at the Great Lakes station, so I downloaded the Ventra app and bought our tickets. For $8 you get unlimited rides for the weekend. You can pay on the train, we were told, but you must have cash. The ATM at the GL station was also not working. Oh, and when going into PIR, go early TAKE THE SHORTCUT!

  • carleys_nana

Thanks blackbird mom for the info.....what shortcut and where?  I'm beginning to try to get as much info from others for our upcoming 28th PIR.....may use Sarge's taxis for a lot of transportation issues.  Any reviews from those who have in the past?  Appreciate any ideas.....hoping our hotel isn't too far from the GL base

  • thisday (Kristie) PIR 4/7/17

Thanks for the info, blackbird...I too would love to hear more about THE SHORTCUT.  We leave on Wed. to drive out to PIR.  So excited, can't wait!!!

  • Blessed

Just received our first call from our SR!! ship 02 Div 927. So good to hear his voice.

  • ProudRN

Blessed, when did your SR start?
  • Blessed

My-son-bug, Our SR arrived at BC on 3/14. He said they were in a push division, they were in P-days for 8 days. This Monday, April 3rd will be Week 2, Day 1 if we understood him correctly.

  • ProudRN

Oh I see! So happy for you. I can't wait for that day. Do you also know his PIR ?
  • 3 boy mom

My-Son-Bug I wonder if our boys are in the same division as my son arrived on 3/29/17. And would start BC Monday 4/3/17 as well if his P-days went as they should.  We have not yet received his box, maybe Monday!

  • Blessed

My-son-bug, our SR's PIR date is 5/12/17. Do you have a PIR date yet?

  • blackbirdmom

The shortcut takes you in a different way to the ceremony hall for graduation. I printed out the directions for this way from my Facebook PIR group, so look for that if you are on FB. If not, it is on N4M also, I'll have to look for a link. It was easy, and while we still had to wait in line, it was only for about 10 minutes, we got right into the parking garage, and straight into the ceremony hall. It was nice because the weather was cold and rainy/sleet. My other advice is to go early and take something to sit on if you can. Those bleachers get hard after sitting for awhile. It was actually a bit chilly in the hall for us, but not cold. We had our sweaters/jackets. I can see where it would get warm quickly in hotter months. Taxis and shuttles dropped off at the gate where went in to park, so a short walk to the hall. We drove up, and got in the line about 6:15, parking opened up at 6:30, and we were inside the hall by 6:50. That was plenty of time to order t-shirts or buy coins.  After about 7:30, it began to fill up quick.

  • ProudRN

Blessed, no we don't yet but I'm seriously thinking it would be may 26th. Congrats on your date!
3 boy mom, I bet we would be in the same PIR and that would be awesome! I did get his box on Friday.
  • 3 boy mom

My-Son-Bug, Yes I think our date will be May 26th also, It will be awesome if we re in the same PIR, I'm not sure why the box has not yet come only that we are far away maybe it can take a few days longer, I hope Monday. I will be sure to let you know.

  • ProudRN

Yes I'm in Ohio so nitnfar at all plus not sure how much a night makes a difference but he was there the evening before your son. You have to sign for it which I'm sure you know. Oh the box... I balled my eyes out and hugged his sweaty pants for a while. Then cried even harder when his Rottweiler, who I've adopted, oils to stop sniffing his clothes and shoes. Thanks for the friend request, I'm thrilled to know someone is where I am in this process.
  • Momof1

My Son flew in on 3/29. Is that his start date?
  • 3 boy mom

Lucky you are so close... It makes me so happy to have found another mom that is at the same place in the process it comforts me... I hope the box will come on Monday/it is going to his fathers house / he has been waiting for it/  I am sure when I get the call that it has arrived I to will cry my eyes out,

Momof1- my son also flew in on 3/29 , so 4/3 could very well be his start date.

  • ProudRN

    Sorry about all my typos!
Hi Momof1, I'm really just guessing with the PIR date. I've read others who have started the week before ours and theirs is the 19th. There are so many things that can impact the date such as class size and training issues as you know so we shall see. It would be nice to have it on a holiday 3 day weekend :). Where is your son going after BC 3boymom and momof1?
  • PT mom

blackbirdmom, thank you so much for sharing your tips, Bravo Zulu to your sailor and congratulations to you! <3

  • 3 boy mom

I have also heard the same thing as to when the PIR can be, so guessing and if everything went as it should it would be around the 26th , My son will be going to San Antonio after BC. Where will your son be going?

  • ProudRN

He's going to Pensacola Florida for aviation and computer tech
  • 3 boy mom

My son will be an MA.

  • ProudRN

Awesome stuff! God bless and protect them all! Goodnight ladies. I'm thrilled to be chatting with you. I'll check in tomorrow and cross my fingers you'll get the box tomorrow 3boymom and you also momof1 if you didn't already. You both made my day :)
