Jessy, yes, but don't do it. It will go to the Post Office and then get delivered to the Mail Room at the RTC and then delivered to him at Mail Call and have to be opened in front of the RDC. Send letters through the mail in envelopes that do not require additional postage. See Letter Writing & Fun Stuff/Questionnaires to send to your Recruit.

  • lemonelephant

Arrival and What Happens at the RTC will let you know what is happening and what to expect.

  • Jessy

Thank you so much! That information was very useful! I'll include some jokes that I found in the link.
  • snowballsmom

Hi Moms!  I'm so relieved.  Today I received the form letter from my SR.  No personal note included, but he filled out the addy, grad date, and the list of attendees.  I immediately addressed the envelopes for the letters I had waiting and zipped down to mail them out today.  He left on 4/11 and PIR is 6/9.  Earlier than expected.  But better for me and planning a trip.  I had Carpal Tunnel Surgery on one hand 2 days after he shipped out.  2nd surgery is in 2 weeks so I will still be off work at that time of Grad.   God works it out.

  • Fonda

    He sure does!
  • Ellek73

Hey Jessy! When my bf was in boot camp I just sent them all in individual envelopes but made sure to number them especially at first I think I had roughly 16 letters when I finally got his address and he said he was so incredibly grateful for each one! I wrote him every day he was gone. And he kept them all and still re reads them! When I first got his address I sent a few of them each day ( not all 16 at once :P but he said he got most of them at once but besides some people being jealous of how much mail he got no undue attention!
  • Jessy

Hey Ellek73! That's what I'll be doing after all, his peers are going to be A bit jealous haha I think I'll write to those who Noone is mailing anything
  • Ellek73

Such a good idea Jessy! I'm sure they would greatly appreciate it!!

My daughter arrived at RTC on April 17th. I got the short call that evening and I just received the box today. It had her backpack, clothing, cell phone, charger, headphones, airline ticket, and even her birth Certicate and contract was in it. I was surprised they allowed her to keep the make-up that she took with to have for PIR but I was relieved.

Just curious, does anyone else's stomache drop when the new PIR groups are added? My Depper doesn't ship until August. When I first joined Navy Moms, the dates for PIR were in March. Then all the April dates, May, and now we are in to June.

The realization that his ship date is just around the corner has me excited for his new journey, but also a bit anxious about him leaving.

I wasn't planning on him being out on his own right out of High School. The plan was collage and ROTC. He was accepted at all three collages he applied to, and that was the direction I thought he was going. Shortly after the acceptance letters, he let us know that he was set on joining the Navy instead of ROTC.

It was a big decision and he has our full support, but three months just isn't long enough.
  • Bethany

yes. I know exactly what you mean. my son had a ship date of May 1st. and on March 1st he got the call to leave early so he shipped out on March 23. I thought I had 8 more weeks with him then one phone call later and I only had 3 more weeks. but now I'm just waiting til out on May 19th to see him again.
  • 3 boy mom

I have said a number of times that my SR will be gone for a long time, I am very sad by this, I am homesick for him all the time I have been living I a state law anxiety since he left. The time is going by very fast...but very slow all at the same time
  • Teachermomto2

Ohhh, Trueblue! I am feeling the same way! Every week I see the new PIR groups, I become a little more anxious and my Depper isn't leaving until Sept! I'm sooo proud, nervous, anxious and excited all at once for this journey to begin for my boy=)
  • Seahawk

My son is supposed to leave August 7th but is anxiously awaiting a change in his rate which could end up in him leaving earlier. we just found this out on Friday and I'm a little panicked. Thought I would have all summer with him.
  • Michele75

Don't miss them before they have gone!  My son leaves in July and I keep thinking this and taking time to enjoy him being here.

  • 3 boy mom

My SR wasn't going to leave until May,but he got the call and left March 28th it all happened so fast, I was not prepared at all... But everything happens when it happens for a reason
  • ScoutToNavyMom

The flip side of the date list moving along is that once they get into B.C., those dates moving by are indication that their PIR is getting closer and we get to congratulate them!

  • 3 boy mom

I like the Semper Gumby that is a good one....

  • ScoutToNavyMom

I'm really not good at being Gumby. ugh

  • 3 boy mom

and practice we will... I am glad to have so many in the same BOAT!!!! to practice with....

  • Qenime

So, I was so excited that we got our letter today!  I right away e-mailed our son's father and girlfriend, so they could make plans for 6/9/17.  Then, an hour later, our son calls us to tell us he is graduating 6/16/17, and he is in a new division 932, because he joined the choir!  Really?  LOL.  So then I had to send all caps subject line e-mail to father and girlfriend to change all the info for graduation and mailing address.

Choir!! I didn't realize they had a choir. I think my son would totally enjoy that. Thanks for mentioning, I will let him know its out there!!

  • misisu

I don't know if my son would do choir! He did through school, but I think he will try to stick with his plan!

The Page, 800 and 900 Divisions, has info on the performing divisions.

Qenime- When did your son leave?

  • Qenime

AZ2OH2IL2UT, my son left on Thursday April 13 from Amarillo, TX, and arrived at Great Lakes about midnight to 0100 on Friday (we got our call at 0122!).

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

Qenime- Thanks for letting me know. It helps me estimate when we should expect things to arrive. What is his rate?

  • Qenime

AZ2OH2IL2UT, he is going in as an E-3 because he wuill be going to Nuke School and has volunteered for submarines.  Not sure of his exact job yet.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

Qenime- I just got my son's box! UGH. So happy to have finally gotten it, yet just made me cry seeing the clothes and other belongings in there. My son is also going in as an E-3 because he will be going to Nuke school and also volunteered for a sub.

  • Qenime

AZ2OH2IL2UT, I got my box last week, and my letter on Monday.  The box was kind of emotional.  I cried off and on for 3 days after he left, and I still get kind of emotional.  I am realizing that he is really truly gone to his new adult life now, and will never again be my baby in my house.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

Qenime-Thanks for the information. I am so emotional and feel like I am crazy for feeling this way. I agree the box was emotional. Do you have any other kiddos at home? I am having a hard time accepting that my son is off starting his adult life. Good grief, I think there needs to be a book written about this sort of adjustment. It's hard enough when they leave for college, but this takes the cake so far for me!

  • New navy mom

That is my hardest part is this being my baby that left. It tore my heart out. I am really going to be a emotional wreak when the box comes in. I cried forever when I suspend his cell phone yesterday.
  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

New navy mom- How many kids do you have? I have 3. One who lives in AZ, my SR who is just left for BC, and my daughter who is 17. I can't imagine my daughter leaving yet either. UGH! Do you other kids live near you? It's so hard when our kids aren't nearby. Although it is much easier to adjust when you can email, call, or go visit. I am constantly on this site sharing my feelings. I hope to get through this time knowing others understand what this feels like. I haven't suspended my son's phone yet. I may have to ask my husband to do that. I think I would start crying while explaining why I need to suspend it.

  • New navy mom

AZ2OH2IL2UT I have 4 kids my oldest daughter lives with us. Then we have 2 sons who live about 2 hours away. It is just hard when you can't pick up the phone and call. Hopefully the weeks by fast.I have never had my kids so far away.
  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

New navy mom. That is nice that your daughter is with you during this time. When your kids are two hours away it seems far when you're used to them being around. Now two hours probably seems like nothing, right? Our oldest son is 10 hours away from us now, since we moved to UT. He was 28 hours away when we still lived in IL. When we moved to UT, I was like...Yay, now you're only 10 hours away instead of 28! We have made the drive to see him a few times and he has been to see us a couple times. Our last trip was for spring break and we were all together. We came home on the 17th of April and then our SR left for BC on the 20th. Such an emotional time.

  • Qenime

AZ2OH2IL2UT, he is my only child.  I have two adult stepdaughters, but that is just not the same thing.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

Qenime- Oh wow. Do your stepdaughters live close by? I know it's not the same. Hugs to you!!

  • Proudsailormom

    Qenime
My only son left April 11. His PIR is 6/2 and then he is going Pensacola for A school. I am single and have been out of work for 10 days due to surgery. I am almost crazy. It took me three days after receiving his box for me to open it. I haven't heard from him other than the form letter. We got this! We have raised stronge men!
  • Qenime

AZ2OH2IL2UT, no, they live about 8 hours away in different places.  We don't see them much.  One of them wants it that way, but she has always been a problem child.  The other is on good terms, but just too busy and far away.  They are both single Moms with two kids, so we miss the grandchildren, too.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

Qenime- I am sorry they are so far away. It is hard when you're a grandparent and have to be so far from the grandkids. My kids had their grandparents around when they were very young, but when they got a little older we moved for my husband's work a lot so they weren't around them. It is hard on everyone.

  • ScoutToNavyMom

I just ordered it.  :)  Found it used through AbeBooks.com

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

ShawnMom- Oh good. I am going to order it off of Amazon and hopefully it will be here in a day or two. Thank you so much for letting me know. Normally I would have been searching myself, but I think my mind is elsewhere currently.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

ScoutToNavyMom- I am currently ordering it on Amazon.

  • momto navymat

Hi everyone. My son leaves 5/8 . It's been horrible even before he leaves. I break down at the drop of a hat. my poor husband looks at me and I know he's wishing there is something he can do. I know I'll be ok. He's my baby though. It doesn't help that my two others left the state as well. All in under a year

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

motto navymat- Awe hon. I know the feeling. When may son told us he was joining I was so sad. I felt a bit better when he said he wouldn't be leaving until June. I knew I had some time to let this sink in. Well, he was asked to leave early and he said yes.He just left last Thursday, the 20th. You are fortunate that you found this site ahead of time. There is so much information on here to help you. Make sure you look over the advice on what to do BEFORE your recruit leaves for BC. I wish I had found this ahead of time. We are here to support you all the way. There are milestones that will help you get through each step. Keep your chin up. Sending hugs to you and your family.

How far away are your other children who already left the house?

  • Navymamabear

momto navymat- I was the same way leading up to my daughter's ship date. I was a mess and the tiniest thing would set me off. The build up to her leaving for me was almost worse than now that she's a RTC. She left on April 17 so I'm fresh into it, but I'm doing better than I thought. I tell myself each day, she made this choice, there's nothing I can do to change it. And no amount of my dwelling will help anything. Enjoy the time you have before his ship date! Fun dinners, family game nights, etc! Hugs to you!

  • Navymamabear

I got my daughter's form letter today! I was overcome with emotion and didn't expect to feel like that! Her PIR is June 16, Ship 02 Div 932.
