From what I've been told and read -looks like within the first day of in-process (which is probably the first 24-48hrs).
  • librarianmom

Just got our letter from our SR! He likes his new division. He has a new rate he is excited about and gets to stay in Great Lakes for A school! We will get to see him extra!
  • pkiwi70

Librarianmom how exciting. I am still patiently waiting. What division is your son in? That's wonderful you have extra time with him after graduation. When is is PIR
  • NoNameMom

Well, I finally tried out the Sandboxx app and I wish I would have known about this sooner in Basic.  My recruit goes through PIR on Sept 8, and if I had had this app the whole time would have been great.  Anyone about to go off to Basic of just in the first few weeks, look into Sandboxx.  Super neat.

  • TASM

That is so wonderful, librarianmom!  What was your SR's ship date?  Ours was August 21.  I am just trying to decide when I can start expecting mail.  Of course I have not received anything yet!

  • JennBNavyMom

My son left yesterday and I'm hoping he will hear about this app sandboxx. I downloaded it yesterday. Now I just wait to hear...
  • Proud Parent of 3 Sailors

TASM SR don't get to write or mail during P days. So they will begin writing the following week. They mail out on Sundays only. I usually get my mail on Thursday. So I'm thinking Thursday of week 3 of being gone. Which is actually week 2 of BC because the P days don't count towards 8 weeks.
  • NoNameMom

JennBNavyMom Sandboxx is a letter writing app. You set up an account, write a letter in the app, take a picture and then when you finish they prompt you for his address and you will see just how it easy it is. And there are video tutorials on how to but really easy. Then you choose 1 letter for $3, or like 8 letters for $20. They print it with the picture and send it to your recruit. They also include paper and an envelope to write you back. Super neat. The picture included is so awesome. It's for loved ones to write military members deployed and in boot camp.

@Sunflower, hotels will let you book 2 dates and when you find out for sure, call and cancel one of them. I have done that both the other times I attended PIR.

anybody else's son leave 8/23? I am missing him so bad! I am watching my phone closely but I know he will not call. I got home from work today thinking he would be here seeing his car in the driveway but no

  • librarianmom

TASM - he is PIR 9/15. Henhadm a delay due to a hospital visit...so that is why he moved to a new division
  • JennBNavyMom

NavyMamaB my son left yesterday as well. Missing him!!
  • Timsmom97

My son left 8/21 and I haven't stopped crying yet! I'm so proud of him for doing such an admirable thing however he is my first to leave home and it is a huge adjustment. I write to him everyday just waiting for the box to come with his address so I can send them. You are not alone!!!
  • ncdeb

Librarianmom, I'm so happy for you!

  • Mattsmomma

Excited to report that I am far less crazy than I was yesterday - thanks to the two letters I received from my son.  He admitted he was definitely homesick the first week or so but he seemed like he is in good spirits now.  The letters were cute and funny and I read them about 25 times.  This has been my least productive workweek ever because my level of focus has been non-existent, but I am definitely feeling a bit more like a normal person again.

  • pkiwi70

Mattsmomma how very exciting? When did your son ship out? Mine left August 8. I got the box and form letter but no written letter. Trying to not get discouraged but very hard not hearing from him. Hoping to at least get a call into week 3
  • partyofseven

My son leaves on Monday Morning for BC. Hi everyone, I love reading all your comments it does help. He is my youngest and I'm happy for him but I know I will miss him like crazy. God bless you guys.

  • AnnieJC

We got the "I'm a Sailor"  (TG43 Ship 6, Div 267) call promptly at 3pm EST! He sounded great, but exhausted....said he'd been up for nearly 48 hours.  He was able to call me, his dad, his Grandpa, my sister, and my best friend before he ran out of time!  So proud of our Sailors!!!

  • NickSydmom

Anniejc5 , that is so exciting. My son is 276 so his division will be last to go. Does anyone know if they run battle stations on weekends?
  • Erin

My daughter leaves Monday as well. She goes to recruiters Monday and we go see her Tuesday get sworn in and then she leaves. Will your son and my daughter be in the same group?

    Hey Erin,

They will be there the same it sounds like, but I'm not sure if they will be in same division or not. So exciting. That will be cool if they are.

  • lemonelephant

Nicknukemom, BST is never run on Friday or Saturday night. See the info in Battle Stations-21 (BST).

I sent you a PM with more info on BST.

  • lemonelephant

For those wondering when you will receive a "real" letter, recruits do not have holiday routine until the second Sunday after arrival (third Sunday for some if they arrived at the end of the week and had to wait on recruits to arrive the next week to fill the division).

If you just received The Form Letter, then a "real" letter will be on the way next week.

See Letter Writing & Fun Stuff/Questionnaires to send to your Recruit.

  • belliesmum

Hello All! 19 days left til PIR. Getting very excited to see my daughter graduate! I have not spoken to her since she left Aug.19th I have only received a letter once a week from her but, she is doing well she states the Navy is taking good care of me Mom and " DO WHAT YOU GOT TO DO TO MAKE IT OUT ALIVE AND SERVE YOUR COUNTRY." Her positive attitude in her letters is my peace of mind.

  • belliesmum

oops, I said she left Aug 19th she left July 18th

  • NickSydmom

Pkiwi70, the first three weeks are horrible I cried all the time. I felt like he had been kidnapped. But in week three I got a letter and the next day a phone call. Something about hearing their voice makes it better. My sons PIR is next Friday. I thought it would never come. A few weeks ago I was in your exact position and now I'm giving advice. In a couple weeks you will be giving advice to the next group of worried moms.
  • Erin

I am so excited can I private message you so we can chat while they are in boot camp?

Anniejc5 - I see Lemonelephant sent you some info on BS. She is wonderful!! My recruit was in Div 264, the last one for PIR 8-25-17. We were driving, so I was a little more anxious about knowing exactly when I should hear anything but we did. Be ready to go and stay confident that the call will come.

Different division commanders will give different amounts of time to the recruits to talk, based on many factors. And some divisions may call before other divisions even if a later number.

  • Kraftinkat

This is such a new world of information. I wish I had found this site earlier. My son leaves on Sept 7 for bootcamp. So tentatively he should be graduating Oct 27th, right? There is so much to plan for. I want to be there for the graduation but I don't know if I can money wise. I'm a bundle of nerves. Thanks for all the information. I keep reading it over and over.
  • Christie_Okie

What week does the one division per PIR get to start emailing?
  • ellen0502

Christie_Okie, It is currently only those in Ship 03 that can email. Emails will come on Sundays.

  • Christie_Okie

    Emailing son right now!!!
  • Jocelynn

Me too! That was great. Too rushed though, for some reason he didn't have much time today..looking forward to next Sunday already.

  • Chipmunk

Kraftinkat - I don't know your circumstances or where you live, that is, can you drive or do you need to fly to RTC?  But if you have family or friends, this is the time when you call in all favors and ask for people to support not only your son but also you and anyone else to be able to go to graduation. Start budgeting, ask for early Christmas presents, etc

It may only be a short moment's time but seeing you and you seeing your sailor is worth all the cost to get there. As my husband just mentioned, especially for a young man, this is such a change of life for them, they have gone from civilian life to Navy life!

    All the best to you.

  • pkiwi70

Omg can not even describe the excitement and calm that I now have after receiving the first call from my recruit. Other than a cold he sounds great. 5 weeks and counting til PIR on October 6
  • Chipmunk

pkiwi70 - being able to hear my recruits voice made all the difference for me. Then the letters came every Thursday, except for one. Thankfully, the next phone call was the Saturday after so my recruit was able to explain that they had used Sunday routine to go to sick call for a cough, and had been given some medicine so it was clearing up. Because they went to sick leave there wasn't enough time to write a letter.  I have heard that a lot of the recruits will have some issues with the climate change or all of the immunizations that they are given, so that may be where the cold is coming from.

So Exciting for you!! I can't wait to get my call from my daughter. I think she's a week behind your son so hopefully soon!!
  • NNLori

I know it's early but I'm wondering how much time I will have with my son after PIR. He is in the nuclear program so I understand he will not have any time between boot camp and A school but what does that mean exactly. They graduate on a Friday. Will he have to leave Friday or will he leave Saturday? Will he be able to stay over night with us or will he have to return to RTC? Just trying to plan ahead and know what to expect so I am not disappointed when the time comes. Thanks!

  • AnnieJC

NNLori:  If your SR is shipping out to A school, he will most likely leave on Saturday.  The links below are a great source of information.

My son leaves today and it is so hard to let them go. I am proud of him, but worried and I miss him already. I know this is what he wanted but I am having a hard time and I know I shouldn't. October can't come fast enough.

  • NNLori

Thank you nukemom42 I really appreciate the info. At least it gives me an idea of what to expect. I understand partyofseven. My son left on 8/23 and today is his birthday so today seems extra hard.

  • Mattsmomma

My son's letter mentioned a sore throat - guessing the lack of sleep, change in diet, addition of some pretty major stress, and let's not forget the 80+ new roommates in close quarters probably will have them all coughing, sneezing, and sniffling a bit at some point!

  • Phoenixmom

Good Morning Ladies, when my son arrived at BC he said alot of them had gotten ill due to all the vaccinations they recieve, so a whole division maybe sick at one time, they go thru a series of vaccinations, I know he told me for a whole week it was hard to walk because of the stiffness. for all the mothers that there Son/Daughters are leaving or have left it gets easier when you start hearing from them. its the first couple of weeks that are extremely hard "the not knowing" beleive me I cried the first week my son left. you will be comforted on this site because we all have gone thru it. welcome Ladies and stay strong.

  • Phoenixmom

Moms for those sons/daughters that are just leaving keep your phones by you all night,  you will recieve a call at all hours of the night with the scripted message that they have made it ok and are fine. they may sound tired that is because they are, It will be a couple of weeks before you here from them, I recieved my box a few days later after you recieve the form letter, and then maybe a call or letter after that. there are alot of knowlegable ladies on this site that will answer any and all questions. I think I asked the same questions over a few times so dont hesitate.
