Hello! I attended my son's PIR this past Friday. It was WONDERFUL to see him!! No words for the pride and happiness a mom feels! We missed the "meet and greet" as we were running late and my younger children were exhausted (actually all of us). It was definitely worth the trip and this southern mom didn't even care about the below freezing wind chill! We also were able to have breakfast with him and hang out at the airport with him for a few hours before his flight to "A" school.

Just wondering if anyone knows if we can send pictures to our SR along with the letters? I don’t want to get him in trouble or draw unnecessary attention to him. Thanks.

Yes, you can send pictures although my son asked me to please stop sending pictures because the RDCs have to review all pictures to ensure that they're appropriate. He didn't want to be singled out that way.

I can say whether in BC or A school they have to open up their packages in front of the Command. so if he doesn't mind then it should be fine.

I would like to Thank Those who shared about their Experience at PIR this past Friday. Maybe you can share about the places you went out to eat, to give some ideas to those going this Friday. when we went back in Sept. we took our Son to a nice place called Stevens we made reservations for 5pm very nice Steak and Seafood place. it was in a strip mall near Great America. Also we went to a family owned BBQ called Captain Porky's Seafood and BBQ. they give you a lot of food made right there as you wait very friendly people, right next door is a Steak house this Family owns that also. so any experience with restaurants would be nice for others to know and experience for themselves. Oh by the way I found that this pizza place called Giordano’s is a favorite for pizza pie. we also tried it and it was pretty good

Really enjoyed PIR this past weekend although I now refer to the Great Lakes as Siberia. It was SO cold! Make sure you have a good coat, hat, scarf, etc if you're coming this weekend. My heart went out to the families who had to miss PIR because of inclement weather along the east coast. We took my son to Q's barbecue in Chicago for lunch after the ceremony. The food was amazing. It's about 45 minutes away but you have plenty of time to go to Chicago. It's a little pricey but the food and smile on your sailor's face will be worth it. We stayed about 10 minutes away at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort and it wasn't full at all, being wintertime. They gave us an upgrade to a suite at no extra cost. The staff was wonderful. Just an FYI, your sailor will be able to tell you after the ceremony what time his/her flight leaves for A-school and you can make plans to meet him/her at the airport. Ours called us from the airport and we met him there, along with dozens of other sailors. They will walk you to the counter and you'll be issued a pass to go with them to their gate. Bring your ID. Also, to bring them back to the base that evening, bring your ticket you used for the PIR and you might be allowed to drive onto the base to let them off closer to where they sleep. Not sure if this last weekend was unusual but most parents were allowed to do this. Perhaps because it was as cold as Siberia!! Enjoy!

Cindy, I am not a FB person either, nor do I totally know the ends and outs of OPSEC that well, but I do know when my son got to A school the first thing he asked me, was to make sure I didn't have any pictures of him in uniform posted on the internet. I realize there are pictures and I know that isn't exactly what you are probably thinking at the moment, but more trying to help you think further down the line, where people might expect you to post a picture of him in uniform.
Something to consider is at your place of worship, or a group your son was involved maybe you could take a picture of his swearing in and mount it on a small poster board where people could write something they have done. I shared my son's address for BC with our church family and other friends asking them to write encouraging notes, which he really cherished. And afterwards I now have his BC sailor picture displayed on the bookshelf in our youth area so his friends can remember him.

Can anyone tell me or others how was the picking up the tickets for PIR? when I attended in Sept. we were sent with a password and had a pass. that was to get into PIR and onto the base. we were sent with the names of who was able to attend. We didn't have security forms or what not at that time. Not sure if that was a whole lot simpler than the tickets. So just was curious as to the outcome of those dealing with the tickets. any advice for those who will be attending PIR soon would help. Thank You

Good morning Phoenixmom. Picking up tickets was easy. We went to the NEX @ 6:30 pm. A very nice volunteer greeted us at the door, asked for IDs and directed us to the ticket room. We gave the staff our IDs. They gave us our grad tickets with our names written on each and returned IDs. Done in 5 mins. Then spent an hour shopping for NAVY stuff which was FUN.

When should we be getting the "I'm A Sailor" calls for PIR's this Friday. I'm getting nervous/anxious. Anyone else know about Div. 058 and results of BS1 or if its happened yet? Do they usually wait this close to PIR to have BS1? Thanks in advance
Jan 9, 2018
Phoenixmom
The "I'm a Sailor!" calls can come 1 to 10 days prior to PIR on a weekday and usually start around 2 pm Central Time, but can start earlier or later, and can come as late as around 8 pm Central Time. Therefore, it is best to have your phone close by all day. When your Sailor makes that call, s/he will most likely be very tired since s/he will have been up since 5 am the previous day and won't make it into his/her rack until between 8 and 10 pm that night, but you and your Sailor will be very proud and very happy. Please ask your Sailor if everyone in his/her division passed and post that within your PIR group. Some new Sailors may not get to make their calls until later if they have watch, a medical appointment, or other reason,
Jan 9, 2018
Phoenixmom
If you do not receive a call, don't worry, everything is fine. Those who will not have PIR do make a call to let their loved ones know that there is a problem, so "No news is good news."

CamtheNukeMan'sMom - my son did not call us that he had made it through BS until Wed about 2 hours before we were leaving to drive to GL. It was around 3 pm. He was in the last Div, so a lot of it depends on the division number. Another friend of mine didn't hear from her son until they were already in GL on Thursday eve. - Like Pheonixmom said, they will be very tired. My son, was trying to mentally go through his list of things he wanted to let me know. I told him what color clothes we were wearing so that he could spot us easily.
Also, I see your son is going Nuke - just to advise, sometimes they don't have as much free time after liberty, immediately as you would think they would, so I would recommend sitting in the lower section on the bleachers, versus up in the balcony. You want to be able to get to them as soon after as able. You may not have as large of an overview of the hall, but it is something to decide ahead of time. - Also, if you can watch one of the videos of a previous PIR (you can fast forward) it will give you a feel for what the ceremony is like and the layout of the Great Hall.

@Chipmunk why would the fact that a SR is going nuke affect how much free time they’d have?
Apart from the fact that they don’t get the weekend ofc.
Jan 9, 2018

NewNavyHusband I am guessing because they may be flying out to their A school? Ratings, A School Locations & Links to Groups here is a link for ratings and where their A school locations may be.

Yeah that’s why they don’t get liberty for the weekend like those staying in GL for A school.
I was just wondering if there was some reason going Nuke affected liberty on the Friday too. Wondering/ panicking haha!!!
