Mykidsmom- Thank you for posting that. I wasn't sure if they were still doing that at bc. Hope you have been doing well.

  • MyKidsMom

Partyofseven — I’ve been doing well. I haven’t been on much lately, but I read all the email messages. Sometimes if I don’t have anything to say, I try not to say it at great length. Times when I might have been able to answer a question, someone else got there first with more complete information.

  • Shortcake

I want to first and foremost say such a big thank you to you all for all of your love and support.  I could not have gotten through this all without you!

I was so anxious waiting for the phone call.  When my son called, I jumped out of my chair and tripped over a package I left on the floor.  The floor went flying across the room.  Luckily I was pure adrenaline and didn't feel anything, so I was able to get to the phone before it stopped ringing. I was literally dancing around the house as we talked.  Poor guy was so exhausted.  Now I'm just waiting for his phone to be turned back on. I texted him everyday he was gone...he may not be to thrilled with me when his phone starts pinging lol.  He told me he ordered pictures!  I can't wait to get them!  All in all he sounds good.  Said he had his orders, wasn't sure when he would leave THU, and that he went through another comprehensive physical with more vaccines.  I feel much calmer now.

These comments may be a little out of order.  There was a lot of catching up to do.

Proudandgrateful - My son was not big on writing at all.  He wrote 2 letters and his upcoming schedule for Nuke school (literally an itinerary format).

I will be the guinea pig for anyone not sure about taking the vaccine.  I believe in the science and there is so much false information out there, but I do respect that everyone has their own opinion. I think for me coming from a medical background and now research, it easier for me to read through the trash and pick out the facts as well as being able to look at the scientific data released and interpret. I will admit, I am a little anxious about the "newness" of the vaccine (not a new technology, just never deployed before).

Shanny - What the what?! That is absolutely absurd that they refused food for your son! I'm really worried now for my son when he goes for ROM.  What do they do if they don't know anyone and food is not delivered and they have to stay in their room?  They need a better system! I'm so relieved to hear he has friends that were able to bring him food.

Pheonixmom - I don't bake often.  I love cooking though.  My mom bakes all the time.  She bakes every weekend for sure and then sometimes throughout the week.  When my son was still here, he would always ask if we could go visit on the weekends because he knew there were treats around lol.

Northwood - I love you festive cookies!

Belovedbyhim - your cartoons had me cracking up.  I will be the mom tackling her kid for sure.

Mom2blondies - Does your son have a lingual bar?  the bar that they cement to the back of the teeth to help keep them in place after braces?  Usually on the lower set of teeth, but I have seen it on the uppers as well.  I made my son get his wisdom teeth removed before he left.  It was his first experience with anesthesia. He was not a happy camper when he came to.  He was upset that he couldn't feel his mouth and he kept trying to take the gauze out.  It was a task the first day, luckily he slept through most of it. My son was not huge on writing either.  I sent him letters with questions and he did not write back, but he did bring the letters with him when he was able to call to answer me then.  Maybe that is something that would work with your son.  I would say keep writing even if he doesn't respond.  I think it helps them still feel connected to home.

Has anyone thought of trying to have a zoom call with all of us? Is that allowed? Kind of a meet and greet?

    Chipmunk - Happy Birthday!!!!

Ladybluefire - I hope you had a lovely birthday!

Thursday morning meeting mania has begun and does not stop until 6 pm PST tonight.  Catch you ladies later.  Have a wonderful day!

shortcake:  my son has been lucky and ended up with a good sponsor. (His first sponsor wouldn’t return emails or calls so they gave him a new one) so when he reached out to his sponsor, she gave him the list of restaurants on base that would deliver with no contact. And ordered him pizza. He got a large so he could keep some in his frig just in case it happened the next day too. It is important to try to establish a working relationship with their sponsor I guess. Because his has gone out of her way to make sure things were ready for him and when they weren’t, she tried her best to fix things. His chief has also been helpful.

I wish I could be a guinea pig for some things. But my broken body doesn’t allow it. I can’t even donate blood and have been jealous of those that can. My meds and medical issues could be problematic for others to receive it. The neuro told me yesterday I was not a good candidate for the vaccine. I have no B Cells-which means my meds are working so it’s a good thing. And I have too many medical and food allergies. I had none until I was like 30 then it was a huge slap in the face with them!  I do participate in research studies for MS treatment when I can. I am in one now where they take blood samples every 6 months. That’s all I have to do. They are tracking any changes in y blood counts and compare it to symptoms and changes. It’s more technical but I’ve been in it for 3 years now and forget the details lol

  • Shanny

shortcake:  I also forgot to say that ROM on base is different than ROM at BC. He has restrictions on that they can’t go into heavily trafficked areas-like he can’t go to the NEX or Commissary or bank. But he is encouraged to go out and walk or go for a run or even talk with his friends that are also in ROM in the same building as long as they socially distance and wear masks.

  • Shanny

Wow just realized I missed a lot of posts..  I’m not getting all of the notifications for posts. Anyone else?  Should I maybe unfollow then follow again?

C’sMom:  woooohoooo!!!!!!  He’s on the move!!!!!

I have been thinking we need to get the Navy Mom Posse on the move!!  Maybe we should have have threatened to storm the gates again!!!  So happy for him!

  • MyKidsMom

Shanny — Once or twice when I wasn’t seeing all the emails, I found that they had been sent to my Spam folder. If you haven’t already, you might want to check to make sure that hasn’t happened to you.

C’sMom — Yay that he is finally shipping out to A school. My son had a little time in THU, but nothing like your sailor.

  • partyofseven

C'sMom-That is awesome that he is on the move. He will love San Antonio.

    Prayers for safe travels!!!

  • Shanny

DallasNavyMom:. First of all.... HUGE Navy Mom Hugs!!!  Have you signed up for informed delivery yet?  You get a picture of the mail that is being delivered each day sent to your email!  Mine didn’t always work for my son...  but he also addressed the envelopes strangely lol but I still have it. I will even look at it and decide to not pick up my mail that day lol it really is worth it to get it. Gives you a warning. Plus if you have one coming you can zoom in on the return address to get their ship and division and potentially mail letters to him before you even pick up your mail.

  • Shanny

C’sMom:  I may have been in your general area on Monday when I went to the airport. I was such a mess on my way home, I got home and thought I should have messaged you to see if I was right...

  • belovedbyHim

C'sMom-- YEA!!!!!!! (Although it's the Navy so I'll believe it when he actually gets there!!!)

  • Shortcake

Shanny - agreed, unfortunately that without B cells the vaccine would not benefit you.  It is wonderful that you participate in research.  That is the only way we can move forward and learn how to treat.  They are very difficult on the patient depending on the study, so I understand that side too.  A lot can be asked from a participant depending on the study. I am relieved to hear that they can move and interact with other ROM Sailors.  Are they automatically assigned a Sponsor?

C'sMom - I am so excited for you and your Sailor! WOOHOO!!! Hopefully things will go smoother moving forward.

Pheonexmom - I am starting my own little cook book with recipes I have tried and liked and made adjustments to.  If you think of something you are looking for, let me know and I'll see if I have a recipe.  How exciting for your kitchen remodel.  I can't wait until I own my own home and can have remodeling projects.  Fingers crossed June 2021.

Vintagegal - I am the most coordinated klutz you will ever meet lol.

  • Shortcake

Question...when did you take your Sailors off of your medical insurance?  I am holding out as long as I can, but if his Tricare kicks in, I don't want him to have issues, but I also don't want to take the chance that he doesn't have coverage

  • Phoenixmom

Shortcake usually when they get into BC they are automatically insured. I actually waited until after BC or when new sign up was available for me to take him off.

  • Phoenixmom

Shortcake sounds wonderful, thank you for wanting to share recipes.
  • Mykenzie

Does anyone have good BC graduation gift ideas? I got my sailor some shaving supplies and thinking about underwear and tshirts. But I don’t know if he really needs/wants more of those?

  • belovedbyHim

Shortcake--(And other new moms)They have been covered since they swore in at MEPS but it's ok to wait till they finish Boot camp just in case. HOWEVER As soon as they finish Boot Camp please take them off!!! It doesn't matter if it doesn't change your rates, It doesn't matter if it's not open enrollment (This is a Qualifying Life Event. Keeping them on after BC Can cause issues. Besides TriCare will cover everything at 100% Not a penny out of their pocket where as private insurance has Co-pays and deductibles that have to be met!
  • Chipmunk

    C'sMom  - WooHoo!!

DallasNavyMom - Let the tears flow and know that the mail is just a bummer right now. I am waiting on several pkgs - one is something I need to repackage, put with other presents and mail to my daughter and grandbaby!!! Ugh! Have a nice dinner with the gf!! It will be good for both of you, even if you sit on the couch and have a good cry together.

Shortcake - I will share some info on ROM and difference between Shanny's son and what yours should face but I have to scoot out the door -- More soon!

Shanny - yes, check spam and maybe stop and start emails. I have some that just don't show up either at times. So, I go back to the site and read.

  • Shanny

Mykenzie:  my son didn’t want anything but before he came home on leave he asked for a Yeti cup. I went on their site and customized a Yeti cup with his symbol for his job on it and had his last name put on the back. I have a picture of it from when I ordered it-it hasn’t arrived yet. I’ll post it

  • Shanny

The back has his name on it

  • belovedbyHim

Mykenzie-- A watch if he doesn't already have one, Cell phone if he doesn't have one, otherwise wait and see what he needs/wants. Right after BC they have most of what they need clothing wise but the bottoms are Tighty Whiteies and some guys prefer boxers. He'll be able to wear Civies after he gets to A school. My sailor grew and his body shape changed at BC so he needed new clothes. He went and bought them himself but we sent $ to his account to cover some of them.
  • DoriBry

Shortcake-I was wondering the same thing about insurance coverage since its enrollment time for next year.  We went ahead and kept coverage for our son since he is still in BC.  Of course I have total confidence he will make it through but its easier to drop a dependant then to add one after enrollment.  But you brought up a good concern in regards to interfering with other insurance coverage.  I really dont know. Does anyone have an answer or suggestion?

  • VintageGal

Mykenzie ~ Hello! I bought my son a really nice leather case for his laptop, a yeti, and some goodies. My son’s girlfriend bought him a nice jacket and a couple flannels for when he can wear civilian clothes in A school. Happy hunting!
  • DoriBry

belovedbyhim-Just saw your post in regards to insurance.  Thank you.

  • VintageGal

Shanny ~ I love the personalized yeti! I ought to find a way to get our last name printed up in sticker form for the yeti that I bought for him.

  • Phoenixmom

I found out some Insurances allows you to take them off whenever and some you have to wait until enrollment time. so I think it just depends on your employer. But yes after BC for sure.
  • Shanny

I threw an all out fit with our insurance company. I told them my kid was getting in trouble for having it when he was covered by Tricare. Lol they finally removed him after 3 months of me calling

  • Phoenixmom

When I told them My son was in the Military I literally had to wait for enrollment time But that was my employer. Others are different. And I had to write a statement as to why I was taking him off. Now a days you can have them on your Ins. until 26 yrs. so It was a long process.
  • Phoenixmom

It was no big deal to me whether to leave him on or Off but he rather me take him off. so I did.

  • Phoenixmom

When My Son Graduated we took him shopping at Gurnee mall, we got him an apple Phone but then he paid for the service. Verizon gives them good discounts and apple tablet case for it. One thing I suggest is that the Sailors get New Tennis after BC because the Old ones can hurt/damage their feet. so that was another thing we gave him plus new t shirts, socks pj pants because they can wear them in A school, a New Blanket. so that was some of the things we purchased.
  • Phoenixmom

Navy Flag - Military & Service Flags - Display Sales

  • Phoenixmom

This is a flag that we purchased for him we put his name on the top his Div # and PIR date on the sides and his ship the USS Constitution on the bottom. we hung it in his room wall. pretty big flag. He loved it and it remains on his wall.

  • Phoenixmom

DallNavyMom it is Hard to absorb, these times are very Emotional and it is quite Normal believe it or Not. Just hang in there something is sure to come. And crying is ok, I did a lot of that for sure. keep positive thoughts! Hope you have a nice dinner with GF.

  • Shoosh

So I got an early Christmas gift last evening!! My son invited me up to dinner and of course I jump at any chance to spend time with my granddaughter. When I arrived, I was surprised to see my ex-husband there, but there was a reason! Under the tree, in a wrapped box, was my daughter :) She called her big brother last week and said she wanted to surprised mom and dad. He picked her up at the airport in Boston Tuesday afternoon, she was here for 24 hours before I knew!!! I spoke to her on Sunday, she said she SHOULD be home by the end of the week.

Those of you who know her story, she is doing quite well, looks amazing, and cannot wait to get back to RTC! I'm sure we will have some ups and downs as she adjusts to life back home, but at the moment she's got it together. It certainly helps my mama's heart to have her here.

PS She said she actually enjoyed BC :) Good thing since she is determined to go back!!

  • Phoenixmom

Mama Shoosh How Wonderful! That is so Beautiful! She sure got the best of you and Dad that is for sure! Love it! the surprise and all! so glad she is doing well and has a great outlook on everything! Best wishes to her!
  • VintageGal

Shoosh ~ that has to be the absolute best Christmas surprise ever! I can only imagine the scene! Thank you so much for sharing it with us! So glad to hear that she’s doing well and is in what sounds to be in more than great spirits! Enjoy this time and soak up every second <3 we are all so happy for you!!! Merry Christmas to your whole family!! Tell her that the Navy for moms group has been rooting for her the entire time!
  • Shoosh

DallasNavyMom Your story reminds me of me. Every time I saw my next door neighbor or a woman down the street, they would ask about my daughter and I would burst into tears. I don't know what it was about them asking, but it certainly was embarrassing lol.

Feel all the feels. And stay connected to these ladies :)

  • VintageGal

DallasNavyMom ~ I can completely sympathize with you! There's nothing like finally seeing your SR's handwriting! Do you have informed delivery yet? Wrapping you in a giant mama hug right now!

I would stock our mailman and I think he started to come late just to prove he was in control! jk But now our mail comes early and I don't have BC letters coming anymore.

Phoenixmom ~  I can't wait to see your kitchen pictures! I bet you are overjoyed and relieved that it's going to be done by Christmas. I like the flag idea too! I hope you had a nice day :)
