Anti M
Hi, I am Anti M (Aunty Em) and I've been here forever, but rarely post anymore.
A fullsized laptop isn't needed, but a great compromise is something like a small Chromebook. I got mine, a refurbished one, online for under $100 (sssh, it was Amazon). Works great. I did pay for a warranty for two years, just in case, but I haven't had any issues. I even prefer it for watching shows because it is little and light.
Hey, hi Chipmunk!

Good evening Navy Moms! Thinking about our SRs at Great Lakes and hoping all are resting easily tonight.
I remember seeing some new recruits leaving the Dallas airport on anlate late flight the Tuesday after the total eclipse on their way to GL. I would assume some of those young men will have or will be in PIR during this time!

Hi Anti M - it is good to hear from you. I was thinking the same thing that a Chromebook would probably work just as well as a full-sized laptop.
Congratulations to all of our new sailors.
I am on grandma and hubby duty, but I am trying to check in.

Happy 4th of July!!
If you are wondering, your SR is not likely to have any special 4th of July activities or fireworks. But I do believe today is treated similar to a Sunday with some down time.
Here is a link to our Blue Candle discussion, the poem/prayer and I think some decorating ideas. Blue Candle
For those of you who are staying at the Navy Lodge, I believe they allow you to decorate your doors. If you are staying at a different motel / hotel, you should check with management, or plan to just decorate in your room, if you wish.
Many people light their blue candles when their SR is going to be doing Battle Stations or later on when they are deployed. Some, just leave them lit all the time.

Happy 4th of July everyone!
I really have liked the blue candle and have used it myself since my son started in Boot Camp and after so far.
I didn’t stay at Navy Lodge for PIR but at a nearby hotel and they had doors decorated and let people do that. I remember one family, I had put out several battery powered candles in little votive holders outside the door In addition to their other decorations. I had also brought some decorations, and I brought a cake, that I had had decorated and then we had come back to the room and celebrated there as well. Remember that there was also a lunch in the hotel lobby also available for families from PIR and we participated in that. It was just informal, hotdogs, and chips and cookies, but really nice just to be able to come back from the ceremonies and celebrate with other families that were there at the hotel.
I happened to drive with my family to Chicago, so we were able to bring the cake. if I had flown in and had a rental car , I might’ve been able to go to a local grocery store and put something together too. With all the activity on the PIR day, we ended up eating at a Japanese restaurant relatively close by, and it was really nice, low-key and relaxing. I felt like it was also helpful, to get a sense of what it was like to try to get him back to the base and exactly the right amount of time too Without having gone too far away that Thursday evening. Then Friday, we did more out and about stuff in Chicago.

I hope all are well after the storms yesterday. On a few occasions SRs have been allowed to call home and check on family. I don't know how the cell phone situation is working at RTC now, since they are allowing them to use those to call home. But, if you think you might not be able to answer a call, you may wish to text or leave a voice message for your SR to let them know all is well. Or send a letter.

My son has completed his six year enlistment as a Nuke, but he is married to an enlisted sailor and has joined the reserves. Some things have changed at RTC since my son was there seven years ago for BC, but we all know what the emotions and ups and downs of this roller coaster are like, so don't hesitate to come chat or vent.

Good Morning Everyone!!
Can anyone answer this question? It was posted in the Main Room chat yesterday by a new N4M member and this is the first I have heard of this.
Hello! What’s the purpose of the QR code that a recruit takes a picture of and sends to a parent when they get to the airport (the “I’m here, gotta go” message)?
This was my reply: I have no idea. I am assuming there is something that will show up if you image on the QR code. This is all new stuff from when my son went to BC. He just called me on his cell phone.
If anyone can enlighten us a little more that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

For me, when I scanned the QR code, it took me to the site where I could download the PIR guest form. My recruit wanted me to fill it out and mail to them so they could turn it in.
