They were just wonderful to us. so we got as much out of it as they did, perhaps more :) I went with my son, a corpsman, who just returned from deployment on the USS Iwo Jima last week - he & I were even interviewed on TV! http://www.wvec.com/news/military/USS-Iwo-Jima-returns-to-Norfolk-T...

Hi all! New to this group. Has anybody heard about how "The Heights" apartment complex is? It is located right outside the gate to the Naval Medical Center. Thanks for any info..... We have heard good things and terrible things, like loud partys all night and puke in the halls. It seems affordable but....?
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Zipsue, my son lives across the corner at The Myrtles and really likes it. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions, I can tell you about the amenities etc :)

Has anyone ever tried to mail a cake to their sailor in Norfolk? My son's birthday is in a few weeks and I wanted to send him a cake. He was in boot camp last year for his birthday, thanksgiving and chirstmas. He is going to be home for about five days on Dec. 28th YEAH! .

    navywife17800,
this link will take you to a page to send an email to the ombudsmanfor the monty. they might be able to help you find out information. http://www.ombudsmanregistry.org/?m=contactombudsman&r=12&r...

you said you live 6 hours away due to health problems. i don't mean to be nosey, and you don't have to give any details, but why do the problems keep you from moving there? i live in nc (1 1 1/2 hour south) and have seen many doctors in that area. they have several very good hospitals, including portsmouth naval hosital. norfolk general was one of the first trauma centers in the country.

tucker's mom, can you give a recipe for cake balls?
  • jboysmom

I had never heard of cake balls until I read your posts here today. I did a Google search and found this site: http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Make-Cake-Balls Gives great instructions to make cake balls. I'm snowed in today, so I'm gonna make cake balls to send to my sailor son and his wife! Thanks, ladies for the idea!

Hi everyone, I haven't been to this page in a while. My daughter Is at NAS Oceana almost finished with C-school. She will be based there as well. Her husband, also in the Navy will either be at NAS or Norfolk. She is trying to find an apartment that is in a nice area if anyone has any places she should check or knows places she should avoid please let me know. Your help is greatly appreciated. She called a few min ago and was very excited that it is snowing there. :)
  • jboysmom

Lala Ribbon Queen, My son and daughter-in-law moved to Norfolk in April. They live in military housing in a neighborhood called Castle Acres. It's only about a mile from the main entrance to NAS. There are 1, 2 and 3 bedroom houses/units in this area. They really enjoy it there. We visited them in July and really liked it as well.
  • Cindy D

Cake balls sound interesting, I may have to give them a try. I sent my son some Tony Packos hot dogs, sauce and pickles. He loves Tony Packos when he is home!

    @tracy,

it's about 1/2  hour.  the actual station is in newport news.  there are amtrak bus stops, one in norfolk and one in virginia beach.  here's the link to the "stations" in VA

    http://stations.amtrak.com/amtrak/StationSearchResults.jsp

i think you can catch a bus to the station from the 2 amtrak bus stops but i'm not 100% positive.  someone on the base should be able to help you sailor with this.

  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

there is a bus stop at this address:  East Virginia Beach Blvd and Monticello Ave

Bus Shelter at Cedar Grove Parking Lot, Norfolk, VA 23510 (i got this information off the amtrack website).  when he calls and makes his reservation he will need to tell them that he will be taking the bus to the station as the price is included in his ticket.  i'm sure if he talks to his co someone there can make sure he either makes it to the bus stop or to the train station, he isn't the first nor will he be the last sailor taking the train.
here is the address to the train station:
9304 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, VA 23601

My sons flight leaves at 5:50pm and he can not leave the ship until 4pm. I got him bumped to biz class so he gets to go through a seperate lane at security and check in to speed up the process. He is flying SouthWest and although they do not give a discount online if you call they will give a military discount so I am glad I called seeing he did not give me the dates until the last minute...LOL you know how that is. I told him to request a taxi to be at the gate at 4:10 I hope he does this as he is usually too laid back kind of guy...LOL

I just want him to make it home!!! I miss him so much and I just went and saw him last month. I think it is because he is going to be deployed when he gets back and it will be the first time so I am already freaking out.

    Thanks for your replies. Paula

Merry Christmas & Happy New Years to all
  • Jan1

Tucker's mom - Amen and amen!  Christmas blessings to all!
  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

How much snow do y'all have in norfolk? My sailor drive home for Christmas and we got almost a foot of snow here in WNC, I think there is anywhere from 3 inches to a foot of snow for her whole drive back. And. Does anyone know how bad highway 58 is coming from NC to VA? Thanks
  • jboysmom

We are visiting our son in Norfolk and they got 14.3 inches of snow.  We are heading over to Virginia Beach this morning to take pictures of the 18 inches they got at the beach.  Should be interesting to see a beach full of snow!  The main roads are not too bad, but you come up on a lot of icy spots due to all the drifting snow from the high winds.  Side roads and highway ramps are solid ice, but as long as you drive slowly and carefully, it's not too bad.
  • diannep

Theresa:  How are the roads up there now?
  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

We pulled our sailors car out of the driveway here in WNC with a 4X4. She is now on the road headed back to VA Beach. I hope the temp stays warm and she doesn't run into any ice. She has to travel over 100 miles on State rd 58, I sure hope that one is clear.

From one sharon to another WELCOME my son just moved to norfolk today. He's on Truman. Being from Texas he's freezing, says its COLD. Told him pull out those long johns lol. Debra> handsome sailor u have there, glad he made it home, n joy.
  • Helomom

We will be flying into Norfolk on Friday night to meet up with our son and his family. They are moving from Jacksonville to Norfolk this week. His sent a text today that the moving truck will arrive on Saturday at the their house in Chesapeake. He just returned from deployment on the Truman, we haven't seen him since last February.
  • diannep

Helomom:  What a treat to see him after so long!  Enjoy!  Sounds like you are going at a good time re: snow.  It is warming up there...
  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

My daughter is with the Ragin' Bulls/Truman. I hope it is okay for me to hang out on this page some. It seems the NAS Oceana page is not very active. I am guessing my sailor is sleeping right now. She drove 9 hrs back to base yesterday then had watch from midnight to 8 am. I know I would be sleeping lol.
  • Helomom

Diannep: It will be fun to hear about the cruise. Didn't hear much from him while he was at sea. Got some neat photos occasionally but I know he has more. We have earned the spot of moving logistics with a specialty in unpacking so we are off to render assistance. They have much to do next week with getting the kids in school, etc. This will be their 4th move in 8 years, second trip to Norfolk. Luckily their renters moved out the end of October so they are able to move back to their house.
  • preston8655

Sharoncede>> we are from Houston where its really warm most of the time.Ms Lala my son just join onto Truman as well made it to Norfolk last nite.
  • Helomom

Hi moms! We are enjoying our "vacation" in Chesapeake. The moving vans arrived on New Years day. I've been entertaining the grandchildren. The house is stacked with boxes. I'm a little sad the snow all melted yesterday. We went to the base last night with our son while he checked in. He's now the OIC for the squadron here while they transition from JAX. The new hanger looks impressive. I'm hopeful we will get through the 17,000 lbs of boxes this week. Cable guy comes tomorrow so if they have cable and internet we will check out of the hotel Tuesday. Saturday we head home, it's going to get here too soon. It is fun being back in the Norfolk area.
  • diannep

Helomom:  SO glad that all is going well...sorry about the snow melting but gathering that the residents are kind of happy about that!  It was pretty treacherous there last week from what I heard.  So glad that you have this extra family time with your sailor's family....and I'm sure they feel very blessed to have you there with them!  Enjoy! Safe travel back to your home!

Cshore and Sharon...My son graduated boot camp last January and has been at Norfolk since last April.  His "C" School was in San Antonio.  He is a MA and does shore patrol.  This was his first time away from home and he's doing great!  It has helped that home is only 3 hours away and so he gets to come home often when he has 3 day weekends.  He's very family and Church oriented and leaving all his friends behind was really tough on him!  He realizes that his next billet will probably be overseas but he feels like he is better ready for it now.  He lived in housing on base the first few months he was there but then found out about housing near Camp Allen (very small Marine base) that was really nice.  It's a two bedroom apartment with each bedroom having a bath.  Has a fully furnished living room and kitchen along with washer and dryer. He even picked his roommate.  Does not cost him anything extra from his pay. At Thanksgiving, we stayed at Navy Lodge and I cooked Thanksgiving meal at his place.  I'm sure your Sailors will do fine!  Let me know if you have any questions.

cshore, is she in the barracks here in norfolk?  when my daughter lived in the baracks she had a microwave and a full size fridge in the room.  she was there for maternity until she got her own place.

    welcome!

    carol

  • Grasshopper

My son lived on base to begin with and it was nice with mini-kitchen and even had a washer/dryer but he was still subject to surprise inspections.  Even though his barracks were new stuff didn't work like the light in his bathroom NEVER worked.   Yet they would come in and take off points because the toilet was not clean.  They also said microwave in roommates room was not clean.  Roommate did not have a microwave in his room. Philip finally went down and told them off the week before he moved.  They finally admitted that the person doing inspections was usually someone put on light duty and they didn't like their job and sometime made things up.  He told them that finding a toilet dirty when there was no light in the bathroom and accusing them of dirty microwave in a room that didn't have a microwave was just beyond outrageous! He was glad to get out of there and off base! Where he's at now is like 2 minutes from base.
