For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.
Hello everyone. My Sailor has been home for 2 weeks and leaves in 2 days to be stationed in Norfolk. Any suggestions or tips for him? He will be assigned to the San Antonio. It's been a great visit. Sorry to see him leave but know that it is a good thing for him. Anyone else have a Sailor or know of one on the San Antonio?
Hello ladies! My daughter is stationed in Norfolk and just found out she is pregnant. She is a tad bit overwhelmed!!! She really needs someone in the area that she can maybe meet and talk to when she doesnt know where to turn. She is only 21 and i live pretty far so being there all the time is not in the cards. If there is anyone who can help me out...one worried mom to another...i'd really appreciate it!! you can private message me if you'd like! Thanks so much!!
Patricia thats good to hear that the Medical Staff was alert for your daughters needs, how is she doing now.
Tiffany Congrats and Best Wishes sorry I cant help I live in New Jersey but Im wishing you the best and Im sure someone from the area will be able to help.Good Luck
Glad you're ok Connie! It was a 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered in the town of Mineral near Richmond,Virginia and felt from VA to DC and up to NY. CNN is covering it, and here's the Hampton Roads newspaper story: 5.9 earthquake felt across northeast U.S.
I checked Mapquest and Mineral is about 136 miles northeast of Norfolk.
Ladies, I am in Colonial Beach, VA and our quake lasted for about a minute and a half... We are 68 miles from Mineral, VA.... It was the scariest thing ever.. My life flashed before my eyes because these are things you think about when you live IN California, not Virginia.
My son works night shift and I called him to check on him. We live in NC and felt it so I knew he should have felt it. He said "oh, so that's what shook my bed." He's an MA and already dreading this weekend with the Hurricane coming...now an Earthquake, he is not a happy boy! lol
Hi Janae, wow, that's a long time to be feeling a quake. I lived in Northern CA in '89 and know what you mean. I'm looking at ch. 13 and ch 10, as well as watching CNN. Let us know if you feel aftershocks please!!
Just reading more about Hurricane Irene, too - one of my favorite places is Ocracoke, apparently residents are to be off-island by Thursday. They're predicting flooding up to New England. Thanks for keeping us posted on what's going on!
According to my husband, they will make an official decision this afternoon on if they should stay or go. If they decide to sortie, they will do so tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed that they decide to stay!
Daughter in law just moved into Merrimack apartments and the hurricane news is scaring her. I wondered if there were any others on this site living in those apartments? I'm trying to find a little support for her.
Lynne...so sorry you had to cancel your plans!! As well as the rest of you that had plans to go to Norfolk this weekend! I know how very disppointed you must be.
I would like to ask for prayers for the MA's that will have to pack bags and stay on base if Irene shows her ugly face. While the ships will go out to sea and others get evacuated, our MA's are required to stay behind on base to protect the base. My son is one of these MA's and of course I worry about him. As others get to leave for higher ground, he has to ride it out. Please remember him and his comrades as they will ride it out if it comes to be!! THANKS!!!
To Grasshopper & all MA's and rest of Navy Families in Virginia area Stay Safe and be thinking and praying for all you and hopefully the Hurricane will stay away from your area.Keep us posted if possible
Lynne, I feel your dissapointment. I was supposed to leave Friday to head to Norfolk to see my husband and that is not looking promising at all....This stinks!
Prayers are going up for those who have to stay in Norfolk. Right now I don't know if my son is one who will have to stay or not. He will let us know by tomorrow if he will be staying or leaving to a safer place. GOD be with everyone.
i'm sitting here on the coast in NC hoping Irene goes away. we have the 1/2 way party saturday for the kids and i really want to take my grandson. we went thru this last year and my daughter had to go out to keep the ship safe. waiting to see what Irene does to see if i pack up and head somewhere (last time i evacuated inland the hurricane went inland, lol)
My son and his ship are heading out from Norfolk early tomorrow morning. I guess that would be evacuating. We're west coast folks, so this will be new. God bless them and all in harms way.
Hi Everyone its 2 30am and the weather channel just said the Navy is having all ships in Norfolk VA move out to Sea early Thurs. in a few hours God Please Keep all Our Sailors Safe and all that might have to stay behind at the base.
My MA was off yesterday and is supposed to be off today. However he is on standby and fully expects to be called in today. He works shore side and drives one of the patrol boats. He said originally someone in his Chain of Command thought it would be a good idea for all the "boat teams" to stay on base in the open barracks starting yesterday but someone above said that was not necessary at this point. He was happy about that! He did say that as of this moring all piers but one would be cleared so I knew the ships were heading out. My prayers to ALL in the path of Irene but especially our Sailors that may be in harms way!! A huge Thanks to all you N4M Sisters and your prayers and support!!
Once again, Navy for moms, you are here for us. What a resource. Thank you all. No one knows more than this site!! Leave it to a mom to get all the info. xo
We just received new updates for Irene's path and it's taken a turn a little more to the west. They are now expecting to hit Morehead City here in NC and maps are then showing the eye going directly over Virginia Beach. I live in Raleigh area of NC and they are saying we may even feel tropical storm force winds here.
Here in Jersey Our Governor is asking everyone not to go to the shore ,Cape May and Atlantic City and stay away ,not sure what his plans are yet maybe State of Emergency
kathyl, my son is also in Norfolk and part of the helicopter squadron. He talked with us today and said that he would be on watch in a hangar starting tomorrow night. He will probably call us again tomorrow and give us an update. I know lots of the helicopter squadrons were put on ships. I'll post here if I get any info as I hope you will.
Kathyl, I just read your profile and my son is also part of HM14. This is the first time I have actually met a Mom from my son's squadron and I'm excited to have someone to talk to.
My son is stationed on the USS Enterprise. The ship is being moved from its usual dock to the shipyard in the Virginia Beach area. B left the ship earlier today and attended the picnic and is now hanging out in downtown Norfolk until he is able to board the ship later tonight. My prayers are with all military personnel in the Norfolk/VA Beach area and all citizens living along the hurricane's path.
My son is the MO for HSC-7. They are standing by for disaster relief duty. That's all he said. He is expecting flooding at his home in Chesapeake. Not sure if his wife and children will stay or evacuate to the West somewhere. It's going to be a very long weekend ladies and gentlemen...
I am a lifetime S. Floridian. We have been through many hurricanes in my lifetime...and my sailor was 6 when we went through the BIG ONE....Andrew. What is "better" about a hurricane than other natural disasters is the preparation time ahead of it. The Hurricane Center here is wonderful....as a matter of fact, the former director (Max Mayfield) now is the expert on one of our news channels....his wife is in my bible study. He is still doing updates on tv about this, even though we are "safe" down here...just had some squally weather today from Irene.
This is Max Mayfield's blog...he is a non-alarmist but very thorough. Please read to educate yourselves about the storm.
My son is considered "essential personnel" for this storm...I understand he will remain in barracks in the shipyard. He isn't too worried...nor am I...because I know that if this is unsafe, they will move him.
thoughts and prayers are going out to all in the storms path. me, i'm stocked up, gas tank full and gonna sit here on the outer banks and see what she does. may turn and run yet.
Marine...please be careful!! Hurricanes are just as dangerous inland as they are at the coast! They can sometimes be more destructive because there are usually more trues and such around to be blown down. Here in NC they are preparing all of our inland towns East of Interstate 95. I live about 150 miles from the coast and we are expecting troical force winds in the morning. You are correct, NC has a LOT of military bases in the path that will be taking precautions. Everything from Air Force to Army to Marine. Hmm...not sure how we missed out on getting a Naval Base. lol Seriously though, please listen to the news and take all precautions up there and be careful! I will be keeping you in my prayers!!
I don't know. But if they said they were moving all of the cars parked at the pier, then I'm assuming they mean ALL cars that are parked at the pier. But I could be wrong.
So I just got my chuckle. When I spkoke to my son yesterday he couldn't figure out why there were so many cars at the NEX and movie theatre parking lot! Jess, you just explained it. He was like, all these people CAN'T be in the NEX!! lol I'll have to tell him when I talk to him in a little while.
If any one could let me know about the cars being moved . I have a few "kids" that are on thire 6 mouth out to sea (Bush) and would like to know about there cars
My son has watch today/tomorrow on the Enterprise so he moved his car to a downtown Norfolk parking garage last night (Thursday). I hope all of the cars belonging to those deployed, or out to sea because of hurricane, are not damaged by the storm.
Just talked to my son and he said they would not have to stay at the hangar this weekend. They evacuated his barracks and he is on his way to a friends house for the duration. They will have to report at 5:30 am Monday (all hands) and I hope he will be able to get back to the Base (flooding). I feel some better knowing that he won't be so close to the water. I'm still concerned because this is such a large storm. I remember Hugo but Daniel was only 4 years old and has no idea what a major hurricane can do. Kathyl, Daniel said he just talked with Dominic before he left Base. Prayers for everyone in this storms path.
