I have a friend whose son is at Norfolk. Her son said that it was not flooded and all is well. He was concerned about his car to, LoL
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Francine, I agree. It seems like every-time my son comes home on leave, it is so hard to say goodbye. My son just left this Thursday and I cried my eyes out after we said goodbye at the Airport.  I explained to my son that I am very proud and happy for him. It is just that saying goodby is hard for me.

I can't wait to see my son again at Christmas.

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Pat, thank you for your advice. You are right. I should try not to cry in-front of my son. I have to think about something to focus my mind on so that I don't.

Don't be surprised if you son changes his mind. My son goes back and forth on whether or not to re-enlist, LoL.  Every-time he hears about the cuts that our government is trying to make on Military retirement. He wants to leave. Then the next day he wants to stay for 20 years.

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Hi mamabeth. Long time no talk to, LoL.  nice to see you here. We need to learn a lot about the Norfolk/Dam Neck area.
  • Philip

My son turns 21 today on the USS Cole!!

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Francine, I just wanted to know if Dam Neck has Liberty Phases like Great Lakes. Also, is it easy to get around Dam Neck base with out a car. My son is planning on picking up just a cheap clunker to drive. He will have to save his money for that.

I wonder how big Dam Neck is compared to Great Lakes?

Is there public transportation outside of the base or do Sailors have to use cabs?

I am sure I will have more questions as time goes on. I know that when my son gets to Dam Neck, he will have lots of questions too, LoL

Happy 21st Birthday Phillips Sailor Son.

Are you not suppose to get sick in the Navy?  My sailor has been very sick with a bad bacteria.  In and out of ER and medical.     My sailor is being pressured by the instructors at school.  I'm disappointed with this.  What can be done..
  • Sandy's_sailor son

dancer, where is your son going to (A)school??  If it is Great Lakes then I know someone who could give you some good advice to pass onto your Sailor.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

(even if your Sailor is not at Great Lakes this person could still help) Friend me so I can send you a personal message.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Thank you Carol. I'm a member of the AECF FC ET group. They are a great group of ladies.
  • Grasshopper

Sandy...not sure how "C" School works at Dam Neck but it is a small base.  Nothing like Great Lakes or Norfolk.  My guess is that your son will have Liberty Phases and even though Dam Neck is a small base the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area is HUGE!!! Oh yeah, and peope drive crazy in Norfolk!

  • Grasshopper

Francine...your Son will need to talk to his Chain of Command.  My son has had 2 speeding tickets coming home on weekends.  Both in VA but not in Norfolk.  Both times he had to wear his Dress Uniform to court and someone higher ranking than him had to go with him.  Once the charge was dismissed and the other it was reduced.  Either way, your son's Chain of Command should know what to do.  They are pretty used to our Sailors getting these tickets...unfortunately!  Good Luck!
  • Grasshopper

Happy 21st Birthday to Philip's Sailor son! (I'm guessing Philip is turning 21)!!  My sailor is Philip and I also spell it with just one "l" but every one else tries to add 2! lol  My Philip sailor will turn 21 in May!
  • Philip

Grasshopper....Philip (me) is an ancient 54 year old. My son is 21. And yes.....spelling "Philip" with two "l's" seems to be very common... incorrect in my humble opinion, but common:). And I like NavyforMoms more then NavyDads because theres more "buzz" about what's going on with our sailors.
  • Grasshopper

Sorry Philip...We love having Dad's also!!  BTW...54 is certainly NOT ancient!!!  I'm as I'm not very far behind ya!!! lol  Anyway, I hope your son had a great 21st Birthday!  I know it's hard not being able to celebrate it with him!
  • ShortBecky

Sandy, My son was at dam neck for C school.  he did not have a car but one of his friends did.  He had more  freedom than Great Lakes.  He is an ET.  he liked Dam Neck much better.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

ShortBecky, thank you so much. I will pass the good news on to him. He is really looking forward to going there.
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

    francine,

glad he got an attorney.  keep us updated on what happens.

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Francine, praying that all goes well with his ticket.
  • Kim

Sandy's Sailor son, I saw your question about Dam Neck a page or so back. My son loved it there. He was there for both A and C school. He didn't need a car to get around base as it is very small and they walked to the school house, mess hall and barracks. There is a bus that runs from base to the mall (shopping) areas. There isn't really anything close by the base to walk to so some type of transportation is needed to get off base. They start with some liberty and as they progress they get more and more time. The nice thing is that they can have their cell phones and laptops, etc with them so communication is easy! My son was there in the summer and fall so got to experience the beach and all the fun warm weather stuff. We went back and watched his C school graduation so got to see the base first hand! It's not far from Norfolk but a very nice place for school!
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Kim, thank you for your reply. I am so happy to hear that it is a nice base. I think my son is going to really like it there. We are from a small town and I think he will feel right at home.  I am getting more excited about him going there than he is. LoL.

I am happy to hear that he won't need a car right away to get around base.

  • Kim

Sandy's sailor son, glad to help! My son is still going to classes there while the ship is in port. They continue to learn! What is your sons rate?
  • Miranda Nicole

Hope all goes well with your sons ticket Francine. VA is serious about their tickets.

My husband got a ticket in norfolk because he hit a patch of gravel and his motorcycle slipped out from under him. He didn't hit anyone or anything and the wreck consisted of only him and the bike and he still got a ticket for reckless driving. We paid almost 200 in fees and they were watching him for a yr. If he had gotten another ticket in that yr they would have took his license.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Kim, my son is a FC. Firecontrollmen.
  • Kim

Sandy"s sailor son, I had to look up fire controlman.Wow! Thats quite a job with lots of training! Very cool. I'm sure he will like Dam Neck!
  • Sandy's_sailor son

kim, you forgot to tell me what your son's Rate is.  I told my son what you said about how nice Dam Neck is and he can't wait to go.

  • Kim

Sandy's sailors son...my son is an Intelligence Specialist. He likes what he is doing so I'm happy for him!
  • navy25

Marine NavyMom that sign is so funny is that all over VA or just by the base, you should send that foto to Jay Leno I bet he puts it on his show thats so funny. LOL I better wash my mouth with soap when I visit in VA lol do you think Ill get a ticket if I say them in Spanish
  • Rebecca4

Will be headed to Norfolk from California for homecoming.  We want to take our daughter (and hopefully our Navy son) to DC for two days when we are back there.  Any suggestions on hotels in DC?  Also, we will drive back to fly out from Norfolk--suggestions on towns between DC and Norfolk where we can spend the night?

    Francine--it sounds freezing in winter!

  • navy25

Hi Theresa, I can imagine how bad it must have been for them to actually post signs I think its a great idea of the signs and for it to be enforced and especially the Tshirts some are ridiculous and sometimes you are sitting in a restaurant or at a movie lobby and the language from some people especially if they are chatting on cell phones its out of hand.

Marine NavyMom LOL Im sure with my luck I would bump to the only Spanish speaking Police Officer

Francine I wish your son the best of luck at the court when he has to go.

Theresa sorry to bother you but is there any way of finding out if there is a specific group for the ship Mahan or who to contact regarding how to send care packages or letters to our Sailors once they are stationed on the ship or would that info be given to my son once he is settled at his ship. This new phase is all new to me, my son was at Great Lakes and we had numerous groups and Navy Staff that were very helpful to Us NavyMoms at GL.Thanking you in advance for any info.

  • navy25

Hi Dancer how is your Sailor doing were you able to get more info or were you allowed to visit
  • Grasshopper

Francne...the attorney will ask for a continuation until he feels that there is a Judge he likes.  In NC they are allowed 3 continuations.  Has your Son told his Chain of Command about his ticket?  He really should because the Navy does like for them to have a higher ranking person with them when they go to Court.  My Son is an MA and his Rank is E3 so an MA1 went with him to Court.  Both his tickets have been in VA and neither time did he hire an attorney but they were speeding tickets not wreckless driving.

Oh, please don't judge all the Norfolk winters by the time you were there.  You were there during an unusual time.  There are days when it's cold but it's not like that the entire winter.  It is nothing like Great Lakes!!! It's usually just a few days a time with temps that cold and then it goes back up in the 40's or so.   Sorry you were there and experienced Norfolk winters at their worst!

  • Grasshopper

Yes, they want us there for advice only when they ask for it! lol  We do have to remember they are adults which can be so hard to remember sometimes with the questions they ask us. lol

I'll be praying for a good outcome for his ticket as well!

Asking for prayers from my Navy Mom Sisters.  My son who is an MA that patrols waterside was going on Duty last night and found out a young man shot himself as he was going off Duty from a ship in Norfolk.  My Cousin is stationed on this ship and was also going on Duty.  I don't know if I should say the ships name due to OPSEC because this ship is not usually docked in Norfolk.  Please just keep this young man's family in your prayers.

I would also like to ask for prayers for all of our Military as we know that credilble information is out there for threats of attacks.  I especially pray for those standing guard and protecting us here on U.S. soil and risking their lives standing vigilantly watching every suspicious thing they see.  I pray for wisdom and strength for them and more than anything safety for them.  I pray for all the Military Mom's worrying about their Sons and Daughters standing watch and risking their lives...I pray for a sense of peace to know they will be safe!

Thank you all!!  I so appreciate all of my Navy Mom Sisters!!

  • navy25

OMG! Grasshopper it wasnt your Sailor who found this poor young Man how sad he took his life my prayers to his family. Is your son OK

.My son just arrived yesterday to Norfolk all new to him for this new phase of his Navy Life on a ship I Pray to God for his safety and for the Safety of All Our Sailors for them to come Home Safe and especially in these next few days coming up that none of Our Military and Police Officers have any problems with these new threats announced last night.God Watch Over All of Us God Bless this Beautiful Country of Ours and Watch Over Our Sailors

  • Grasshopper

Navy 25...My Son is on the Boat Crew which means rather than patroling the piers he's out on a patrol boat so no he was not the one to find him but of course all the MA's stay in touch especially on waterside.  I didn't get the full details from my Son or my Cousin as to who found him.  It is so sad for all involved though!

  • navy25

Grasshopper, Yes very sad that poor family and Mom that God will give them strenght.Im glad it was not your son who found the poor young man for that Im sure would have been hard to bear. My Prayers are with all involved for Strenght and Comfort at this time

Hi Everyone Ive heard on here about Tiger Cruise not familiar with this any info just curious
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

    sissi,

you won't find it on the internet.  when they had one sailor shot (and kill) last july 4th there was a very (and i mean very) small comment in the paper but it never even mentioned he was in the navy.  they keep that kind of stuff pretty quiet.

  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the sailor as well as those that work with him.
  • kellydeedee

my daughter was talking to me about the tiger cruise and I planning on going the next time.  It will be good to see her and meet all her friends.  I am so excited

Good Morning ladies. I am very happy today. My son arrived in Dam Neck on Friday and is looking forward to starting (C)school next week. I think he said he has INDOC for 10 days before school starts.

    Francine. How is your son?
