For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.
Sandra, My son has a 05 Mustang he bought when he came home after A school. Insurance is pretty expensive so far 900 every 6 months. Wish he would have waited to get a sports car till he was older.
Sandra AM, My son's Mustang cost him $4,000,. It is really hard to find old Mustangs for cheaper than that. He would have to look for awhile but he might find one. If my son were here now. He would tell you that mentioning a Mustang in the same sentence as a Subaru is sacrilege.
Sandra AM. My son has been very very happy with that insurance company. He also has a bank account through them. You can even do your transactions through your Iphone if you have one.
We drove our son's car from Montana to Norfolk so he would have it. Watched the ship come in and then all of us flew back home for his leave. He wanted as far away from the ship as possible after spending 24/7 on it for 6 months!
Welcome Timmyswife to Our Group Good Luck with the apt. im sure youll get info on here from some of our Moms/Wifes also once you know which ship he is on you can see if there is a group and ask that question as well. My son is also looking for a place for when he gets married in the near future so then keep me posted LOL.
she is getting kicked out due to her weight and failing the physical readiness tests well 3 in the past 4 years. She has a thyroid problem. I just want to make sure that she can get the resources that she can
Sandy...really depends on where in NC your son is going. I live in NC near Raleigh. My son comes home just about every other weekend and it's about a 3 hour drive. To get here he has to take a smaller back Hwy and is then able to pick up Interstate 85. Going to the beaches of NC he would be on smaller Highways getting there. He'll do fine as long as he obeys the speed limits especially in VA.
Sandy's sailor son, the drive would have been nice if we hadn't done it in three fays! Course we think there is no more beautiful place than what you find in Montana! After driving across it, instead of flying, you truly see how immense and diverse a country we have! Our country,USA, is a beautiful place and well worth protecting! Bless our military men and women!
Thanks for your advice ladies. I will remind him about the speed limit. It is hard to believe that driving over 80 in VA is a felony. There must be lots of felons in VA.
I knew that my Son's 2 years were just about up in Norfolk and that he was going to be looking at orders soon but got hit by a bombshell when he sent me a text yesterday saying "going to Naples, Italy...will call shortly". I texted back saying that I thought a phone call was certainly in order for that news. lol It's a 2 year order and he's really excited. I am excited for him also but it sure caught me off guard! He's currently only a 3 hour drive from home. I told him that will certainly be more than a 3 hour drive. lol Guess I will start saving and planning for my vacation!!
Grasshopper, Wow and double Wow... How lucky your son is. I went to Italy as a teenager and loved it there. He will really enjoy life there. Even though he won't admit it. I know he will get a little homesick.
I heard that it is smart to have your Sailor put you on the Ombudsmen list that way they can give you information about your Sailor while he is deployed.
He has to report no later than June 6th. Fortunately that gives us time to prepare and get things in order. He admits he'll get a little homesick. He would have preferred a one year deployment but that was not available. His first choice was Rota, Spain which was only for 1 year but that was for E-6 and above or something like that. Thanks for the info about the Ombudsmen list. He is very concerned that something may happen to my Mom while he's there. She lives with us and she has serious health issues and he's very close to this Grandma! I'm just putting it in God's hands!
Grasshopper, my sister was stationed over there also back in the day. She is 59 yrs old now so I think she was in her early 20's. She also got to see many places and different countries while she was stationed there. She told my son to be sure and buy souvenirs and have them shipped home on their expence. Most of the countries will do that to get your business. lol
Francine, My great grandmother and grandfather were from Italy. My Grandpa was too. (on my mom's side) It is funny because Italian food in Italy is nothing like Italian food in the USA.
When I went to Italy many years ago. I went up the Leaning Tower of Pizza. I went to Mount Visuvius, and Pompeii. In those days you could still walk amongst the bodies of preserved people form the volcanic eruption.
I love the holidays but this year we will be one son less, Curtis wont be home for the holidays he is on the USS Bataan which has been deployed since March. I just might have to leave my tree up this Christmas till 2012, I wont get a real tree this year. I think he is getting homesick now. Every email I get now says I miss home!! Can't wait to be able to drive a round. lol I miss him too, but we have to keep those sailors spirts up during the holidays expecially! I love those sailors God Bless them!!!
The Holidays wont be the same for Us last Christmas was one of the very best because my son was with us but this Xmas he wont be plus his Bday falls around Thanksgiving and it looks like it'll be the second one I wont be able to be with him so Im not looking forward to the Holidays this year unless something changes in the next 2 months. This is one of the tough parts of being a Parent when they are not Home anymore, A Mom who has to remember he is not a little boy anymore that he is a Man making his own Life and Decisions, Im just a Mom who misses her only son very much and Bdays and Holidays are Tough.God Keep Our Sailors Safe Always and Our Military
Navy25, you are so right! My son will be in Norfolk for his birthday which is around Thanksgiving also. We don't know about Xmas. So our Xmas last year was the last one for our whole family to be together. It is tough but better times are coming. I am so proud of my son & the commitment he has made to our country!
Hi Jeffsmom,Oh so both our sons are in Thanksgiving Weekend ,I know we are so Proud of Our Sailor and Yes its a Big Commitment they all make for Our Country. Our 2010 Xmas was so Special Ill really be missing that this Year, I should have left mine up it was up until Feb.Has your son been long in Norfolk mine just got there this month.
im so ecxited i get to see my son this weekend his ship is pullin in an hour from our home...they are pickin up supplies...before goin back home...what a suprise blessing...love where they r pullin in great little seafood resturant right by the base..my husband was stationed across the the navy base at the coast guard base,,
hello mandM99 we are somewhat new to norfolk as well..my sons been there since june, we thought he would be at sea more than he has, i guess each ship is different what ship is she assigned to..and being so new to the lingo...what is sgot..lol...
I am going to Norfolk VA October 20 to see my daughter and go on the day cruise with USS Jason Dunham. I can not wait I am so excited. I wish her dad was still here with us to experience this too.
Hi MandM99, enjoy the trip with your daughter to Norfolk FYI The NavyLodge is right outside the Norfolk Base very convinient and I was able to get a room for my soon to be daughter in law for 68 a night you just have to give your Sailors rank and room is reserved in their name and they have to be there at check in. Its suppose to be really nice according to some posts i ve read plus I also saw some fotos the best is that is right by the base my son went to check it out .Its convinient im sure.Let us know how your trip was.
Hi Everyone if anyone has the Smithsonian channel on cable their is a show called Mighty Ships right now they showed how the USS Peary gases up other ships and brings them food right now they are showing USS IKE real interesting I had seen this MIGHTY SHIPS on schedule before but had not been able to watch it before pretty cool.
Thanks for all the comments and congrats on my Son going to Italy for his next command. Sorry I have not been on here for a few days. My Mom lives with us and has health issues and has not been well the last couple of weeks. Good side was my Son was home for the weekend so we got to talk about his new adventure! I am so excited for him! I know he will miss his sweet tea and Bojangles! He is a true Southern Boy! lol. I'm so grateful for my N4M Sisters and the support you gals give! Thanks again!
Well...grasshopper....two things that CAN help ease things a bit...i sent my spouse a can of his favorite instant lipton sweet tea and a teaspoon measuring spoon so he could it into a water bottle! Now I know it t the same and send a zippy bag spaces are tight in case the can needs to go! Then when it come to the Bos I don't know about regs but I've sent my hubs shaker jars of the fry salt! They sell them in four packs during the holiday season. If they don't have them out yet...ask Home office may send them in early! You are talking to a sorter galmthat can't stand the fact that my closest bos only sells grits in the Morning, and one kind of chicken when I know they have two flavors! Let's just say the trip home will be slow as I'm sure we will get variable aspects to go with our dinner! I have my route planned
my fiance is on the uss bataan and im living in florida =[ i am looking for people to get close with about relationships and life. i miss my sailor so much! ! if anyone wants to chat hit me up <3
I am thinking on moving out to Virginia, my daughter is on the USS Jason Dunham, my problem is I do not like living in the big city so I what I am wondering is there any areas that are more in the mountains I am thinking maybe an acre of land? I also thought about west virginia. Does anyone of any suggestions?
My son just got to Norfolk yesterday! He will stay in the barracks for a couple of weeks, then be moved to apts. He has his other sub mates from Groton with him so he is happy! I'm looking forward to visiting!
Hi ckmom I think about your son everyday, your son replaced ship my daughter was on. the ship is docked for improvements and maintenance. has anyone heard about leave in dec? my daughter keeps getting conflicting answers. she was told one week, then 4 days - that would be crazy it would take her one day each way to fly out so 2 days for christmas won't work. we were hoping for 12 days at least. we always took 30 when my husband was in the army. and 30 during the summer as well to visit family. we were always out of our home state.
Leave in December is for about 12 days. They can either take first leave (16th - 28th) or second leave (12/29 - 1/9). They need x amount of people from each department to stay on the ship during the rotation, so just because your sailr requests leave for Christmas (which, of course, is the most popular request) doesn't mean they will get it. My husband has been in four, almost five years and this is the first year he's getting leave on Christmas. Every other year he's had duty Christmas eve or Christmas day. Who gets what leave depends on when they put the request in and seniority. If this is your sailors first year in the Navy, don't expect them to be home on Christmas. They might get lucky and be able to, but try not to be disappointed if they can't. It just gives you a reason to stretch the Christmas holiday even longer. And your sailor will get to be the center of attention while they open presents (:.
My son will be in Norfolk on the 28 of Oct. He is comiong home today from Chicago, Boot camp, then went to A school, can't wait to see him.. He's supposed to be on the Admirals'staff for his first assignment. We are real excited but not sure what he will be doing. He is enlisted as an Operation Specialist. Navigating, air, land and sea traffic controller?
I am looking for a poem from Mom to son, on this going away party... Does any one have one? I can't concentrate enogh to write my own!!!!
Mel...I couldn't come up with a poem for my Son's going away party either but wanted to do something special to let him know how much I supported him. I memorized the phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta) and recited that to him by memory. He had helped me learn it so it was not a huge surprise when I did this. The one I did surprise him with was I also memorized the Sailors Creed. He had no clue I had printed that and learned it. I did actually personalize it a bit though..Instead of "I am" I said "You are" and did that sort of thing all the way through. Thankfully I had put the packs of little tissues on each table cause everyone was opening those packs after that. Good luck!

veteran's places do so that nothing is missed by VA.
she is getting kicked out due to her weight and failing the physical
readiness tests well 3 in the past 4 years. She has a thyroid problem.
I just want to make sure that she can get the resources that she can
