Glad to hear that your son made it here safely.  We just wanted you to know that we open our home on the weekends for the sailors to come over and eat, play board games, cook if they want to, :), or just hang out. We have several sailors coming over and would love to invite your son-whether he is waiting for the HST to come home or even if he joins her. Let us know if he would be interested in coming over and have some home cooked meals. :)

A plea from Naval Medical Center Portsmouth today -  PLATELETS NEEDED -- In support of a critically ill pediatric patient, the NMCP Blood Bank Department is in desperate need of platelet donors with the Type B blood type. Platelets have a total shelf life of only 5 days, which makes the need for donors even more important. For more information and to schedule an appointment, please call 757-953-1717 or 953-1730. You must have base access to donate.

I have donated platelets there before - it's a different process than just donating blood, as the platelets are removed and the rest of the blood components are returned to you, all in one procedure.  Pretty cool in fact.  

And you get a free coffee mug!  ;)

@ Marcy-Thanks for posting this. I just called and booked a slot for 24 March; they are looking for two donors per day for several months to come. They have a pediatric patient who will be at the hospital for an extended period and are trying to keep a ready supply of platelets on hand for the duration. If you call, the next available appointment is mid-March.  The corpsman who answered the phone said to thank everyone for their overwhelming response!

John and Yvonne Thanks for what a wonderful service you provide for all the sailors.  I was wondering if you are aware of anyone who provides similar services to young married couples with a small child.  My son's family just moved out there with him and they haven't found anything.  I know there is a link for mom's of sailors, but my daughter in law doesn't have a car to use and is shy so probably wouldn't go without her husband.  That is why I thought something in a group with games and possible other kids for the children to play with would be great.  Hope to hear something from you soon.

Hi Trevor's mom - about a week ago, 'Soccer Mom of 3' posted that her daughter took her car to Lee's Auto Service on 837 West 44th Street in Norfolk, phone 757-440-1053. They were reasonable and didn't fix anything until she approved it. 

This is my son's mechanic, but he's on the Portsmouth side.  Says he's a good guy and always tried to save him $. Baucom's Auto Service, 757-397-5911.

Oh my there was just a segment on the news made me cry. a 93 year old man was a spectator for a marathon. He was in his WWII uniform. first one runner ran off the road onto the sidewalk to shake his hand and say thank you. Then another then another till there was a steady stream shaking his hand and thanking him for his service.

My son is in the process of getting a motorcycle and I am scared to death.  How many of you mothers have kids that have motorcycles on the base in Norfolk?  He is staying on a barge during the week, and comes back to the base on the weekend.  He is only doing that now because it costs so much for him to constantly take a taxi. 

So for awhile when he gets the motorcycle he will be riding back and forth between the two places.  All of his family has tried to convince him to get a vehicle and not a motorcycle. I am so worried about his safety because this is his first motorcycle.  I hear the traffic is crazy out there.  Can anyone calm my fears on this one? ha I know motorcycles don't get seen a lot by traffic or at least I hear that a lot.  I know he will be careful, but it is other people that I worry about! :( 

Driving just about anywhere involves freeways, and rush hour can be really something.  To me, the greatest concern is the weather.  You get a good amount of rain and driving rainstorms, and winter gets freezing temps and some snow.  That plus the traffic - not a good idea.  Plus - won't he want to take friends when he wants to go places - or take someone on a date?  :)  You can't always bum rides off other people (who by the way were wise enough not to have just a motorcycle LOL).  

I totally agree but darn these kids can be stubborn.  He has always made wise decisions and has never caused me any major concerns.  But his little heart is set on getting this motorcycle and we can't seem to talk him out of it.  He really does his own thing and doesn't hang out much with anyone yet.  He has only been out there since the beginning of January.  I guess there isn't much I can do.  I was just hoping maybe there were more mothers out there with kids riding motorcycles that will tell me it will be okay. LOL  Also, he isn't much of the type to bum rides.  He doesn't like asking people for a ride so he will either walk or take a cab.  That is what he has been doing all along. I think even after buying the motorcycle, he will probably try getting a vehicle too.  My family who ride motorcycles said he will probably ride it for a few months and then put a for sale sign on it because he will realize it isn't very convenient. :)

I have a son in Norfolk who doesn't drive at all. Never got his license and he doesn't want one. He really needs to get one. He has a permit for Colorado but only drove 4 times. 

I have 2 sisters, a brother-in-law and heaven forbid an 11 year old niece that have motorcycles.  Granted the 11year old's is small but still.  They are big into motorcycles! Love them. Me on the other hand feel that in particular no young adult should have one. My son, not in the military, got into a motorcyle accident in September.  He is lucky to be alive. I just feel no matter how responsible a young person is they are just not ready for a motorcyle. They get too distracted and there are too many things to be thinking about when you are riding. Im sorry I know this does not help you. But my son was lucky and only messed up his ankle very bad all because he hit the front break a little too hard.  Mototcycles scare me.  If he does get one please insist that he takes all the safty classes that he can.  Good luck I know how stubborn kids can be!

Everyone I know in Norfolk who has a motorcycle also has a regular vehicle as well. I agree with the rest of your family HuffyMom, he'll probably trade in his motorcycle in a few months especially as those summer storms will be starting up!

Hey, Everyone!

If any of your Sailors receive a blue Personal Property Tax Bill for 2013 like my Sailor daughter did from the City of Norfolk for buying her car in Virginia Beach, she was eligible for an exemption because she is in the military and a non-resident.  She called the number on the form and qualified for that.  She saved $106.00!!

Got tears in my eyes reading your post. No matter what age, kids never stop needing their moms. So glad you are there with him. Praying that God will sustain and give each of you strength during this time. (((HUGS)))

I am so glad you are with your son, there may be hundreds of Sailors up there but I have watched so many that look so alone. They eat alone, walk around alone talking on their cell phones, It is sad, their only connection with family is their phone. When my son had a blood clot go to his lung he drove himself to the hospital. we received his call and at about 2am and we hopped in the car and drove up there. When our children are sick or having problems they need us no matter how old they are or how independent they want to be. Prayers for your son.

Tell Steven that for every prayer posted, there are many more warriors praying for him that don't post.  So many multiple those by 10 fold? 

I tend to be more of a silent warrior for EVERYONE!  Thought Steven might feel better hearing this. 

Lord, when Steven comes through this, may he choose to stay in your fold and receive your mercy and grace for the other challenges he will face for the rest of his life.  May he recognize that this challenge can change his life forever . . . and forever is why we do what we do right now.

I am also just catching up for the last 2 weeks.  I am always praying for all our sailors.  They face so many obstacles on their own and it is good that you are able to help him and that he felt comfortable enough talking with you.  I wish they all had someone they could turn to in times of need.  God Bless you and your son's journey to be healthy soon.

B-Ready, We will be praying for Steven back to good health and wisdom for the doctors as they treat him. Looking forward to meeting you both.

There are signs in the parking area (towards the back of the lots) that say maximum length of parking is 14 days. Ours would leave his there for short underway periods  without incident.

My Sailor recently told me decals are no longer required on cars.  They just show their ID's at the gate.

Yeah, base decals are no longer required. Just a military ID to get through the gates.

Awww B-Ready, thank you for the update, but, I hate to see you go. I'm so glad that Steven is making progress, but I know it must be difficult facing the discharge. I know that you know, God has a plan for him and he will not let him down. The most important thing is his health and I know you will take care of getting him back in good health. Stay strong and I wish you both all the best in the future. ((HUGS))
