Kathy, what is your eBay name so we can help.

Posted by a military support group this morning on facebook, I don't know if it's true or not( it is after all Facebook!) and why on earth anyone would do such a cruel thing to a military family, I can only guess:

TO ALL MY MILITARY FAMILY FRIENDS: BE AWARE!!
Bn XO here. 1 of our deployed Marine's family was called & informed of a false-IED strike on their son. The caller identified himself as a Marine. We have already confirmed this to be false and not a case of mistaken identity. The Marine is fine and has spoken to his family. We believe this may have been an attempt to gain personal information from a concerned family. HQMC has stated that this is not the first phone call of this nature.

That's good news indeed Devil Doc Mom 661!!  I start having son withdrawal when I don't hear from mine.  I try not to stalk my son's FB, but if I don't comment on his status or post something for him, he'll text me or email me and ask if I seen his Wall lately...   Of all the 800+ friends he has, I guess Mom is in the top ten list.  LOL.
  • TexasDocMom

Ladies, on facebook, make sure your wall is locked down so only your friends can see it, as well it's probably a good move to disable any "family" list you have on your profile, so your child cannot be connected to you and your home town. If any information is shared here on identities on any social media, including facebook, linked in, google x, ebay or whatever, please do it by private message. Any one looking to connect to you through your child's ID needs to find that information someplace else besides our support groups, thanks!

Pray's go out to the Riley family...there are never the right words to express how sorry I am about your loss...God bless you and your family, and all those other young men out there...My son is in Doc training as we speak, and my nephew's are out in Afghanistan...

Hey y'all, I am still sort of a newbie here. My daughter is in basic now (PIR 09/23), but will head to San Antonio for A school to become a Corpsman. Just wanted to introduce myself. I am glad to find this group. I live in Montana and don't know any Navy moms here. But, I'll keep looking!

    Have a blessed day!

  • velvetlace

Welcome MontanaMomKandi  !  This is  a great site.  There is also the San Antonio Corpsman site, as well that you should join.   My cub just finished corpsman school not to long ago.    Enjoy the journey!

Is there an A school for Corpsman in Great Lakes and San Antonio?  Just San Antonio?  sorry I thought it was in Great Lakes.
  • Jana

I think there used to be one in Great Lakes, but now the only one is in San Antonio from what I understand
  • UFQ202- Ship 12, Div 231

Just spent the weekend seeing my Sailor at Corps School. I am a retired HM1 and went to Great Lakes. We got to see where they are going to class and where they live. It was very hot and humid. My son's biggest complaint is that the cabs are so expensive there. Just to go to Walmart is around $13 one way. They try to go in groups to save on the expense. I can't believe how young they looked but I guess we looked that young once too!
  • Hilarie

I was wondering if most people take cars with them or not while they are in Corpsman A School?  My son won't have a car with him and I was a little worried about that.
  • Pam

Welcome MontanaMomKandi!  Definately join the A School San Antonio group.  You'll find others to share the journey with you and some that are a week or two ahead that can let you know what to expect.

Hilarie - my son graduated from A School last October and he did not have his car.  He went straight from bootcamp to the A School side.    If I remember correctly, none of the friends that he had during A School took their vehicles.

  • UFQ202- Ship 12, Div 231

According to my son they are not allowed to have cars while at A school. Parking is limited for the Navy. The only ones who are allowed are those who report to A school from the fleet.
  • Tamme

Welcome MontanaMomKandi! Search under group for Montana Moms as well!
  • TexasDocMom

Yes, San Antonio is HOT!! all of Texas is hot and dry, dry, dry....wildfires every where, all around our state! As much as I hate it when we go to humid days, I'd take them just to help get some moisture in the air and help our crispy plants. I'd much prefer RAIN!!!

I think San Antonio needs better bus service from Fort Sam to the shopping areas, that might be something to suggest on the Metc facebook page. I remember my son spending bucks on a cab in GL as well, tho. They didn't go very far, he was in school there during the winter and he's a Texas kid.

For more information on the Corpsman school, see the METC link above.

Hi everyone - so glad a friend sent me this site. I live in Oregon and my HM1 is stationed on the dry docked USS Roosevelt in Newport News. I had the wonderful opportunity to drive with him cross-country when he was transferred there from the hospital at Camp Pendleton.  Glad to see the Navy gave him such wonderful quarters - and it seems he's with a great crew.  Although my husband and I are both former Marines, we have never forgotten our love for the Corpsmen.  Cheers to you all!
  • TexasDocMom

Welcome, Amy!! former Marine mom! you'll have lots of insights for new folks to the military, thanks for finding us!!
  • AmyMac

Thx TexasDocMom.  I am happy to help anyone, any way I can.

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Devil doc mom, i can't even begin to imagine how you are feeling right now. All I can say is keep your faith that all is well with your son. We will keep him and the others in our prayers.
  • Kym Ship 11 Div 118

    Alsi praying....keep us posted.
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Devil doc mom, it is not lack of faith. I have plenty of faith and i worry about my son and he is in c school still. Don't know yet how I am going to handle a deployment. At least you know your son is safe from his facebook. Have you ever heard of Silent Unity? You might find. The comfort talking to them. I have through some very difficult times. You can find their number under www.silentunity.org. Prayers to you and your family.
  • TexasDocMom

DDM, please go to  our group for Loved ones with Deployed Kids in Iraq/afghanistan and share with the moms there. We have many, way too many, experienced moms (including many corpsman moms) on that group that will reach out to you and there's always someone home there.

I know how frightened you are, I know the shaking won't stop and I know it tears your soul out to read and hear of your son's anguish. I KNOW that feeling. That said, please be very careful what you share on public boards. Feel free to personal message me or any of the moms on the Iraq/Afghan group, they will help you find a little comfort....and we cry with you. That day will come when you're jumping up and down for the joy of homecoming. We'll do that, too.

Send your son a personal message on fb and maybe he can share with you there, experience tells me that it is not good to share this info on an open page on social media.

Please go to our group, there are moms there with kids today in the same situation as your son. Much love to you.

  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

DevilDocMom - I definitely will keep your sailor and you in my prayers.
  • TexasDocMom

Ladies, remember, when your son/daughter shares with you, they could be sharing information that has not been available to the public because of military procedures that are very important...like the notification of next of kin of a casualty injur or loss. We do not want to cause unnecessary worry or pain to a mom or dad reading these posts or have a parent find out on public social media about the loss or injury of their child. Please use personal message if you need to share these types of things with someone. Please.
  • Mamafish

    DevilDoc Mom,

You and your son and those others in harm's way are in my prayers.

  • karenmjm

DDM. . .faith is how you get out of bed each morning, and plaster a smile on your face as you go about your day.  Faith has nothing to do with worrying about your sailor.  For each minute of worrying I try and spend a minute in prayer to my higher power. . .there is peace and comfort in prayer. . .and it's the only other thing you can do beside worry.

P.S. screaming outside and cocktails are sometimes necessary, also! :o)

  • MomByHeart

DDM...I am so sorry for your fear and worry.  I agree with all these ladies...your faith is not the issue.  The issue is that your son is in a dangerous zone and has had one of the most scary experiences anyone can ever have.  And you are his mom and you  are afected.  We  all understand your fear and concern.  Many prayers for you and your son...and praises that your boy is safe.  Bless you!

  • eolia (ship 10/div 257)

I need any info from your wonderful ladies my son just started school last week and it sounded like in his voice that he is VERY overwhelmed.  He even told me if he doesn't pass that his job will be one step ahead of a cook and work on tying up ships.  I told him he could do it and gave him all the encouragement as I could, he did say he was involved with a study group which I think is a great idea, did any of your sailors feel the same way and do you know of anyone that didn't pass.  He passed his CPR class and says he has a huge test on Monday over definitions.  I'm really nervous again, I thought it would get easier after boot camp!!
  • TexasDocMom

eolia, you've done all you can do...encourage him when he calls, the study group folks are very experienced at getting these kids through that course. And I'm sure there are other options offered if corpsman doesn't work besides cook...altho, as a caterer, I have to say he'd come out of the Navy a lot more employable than many of them do...
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

Waiting to hear from my sailor in N.C. Heard from him last night and the winds were aweful and torrential rain. They lost power as well.
  • eolia (ship 10/div 257)

Texas Doc Mom thank you, I told him that most everyone are feeling the same way this is new for everyone, the sad part is he choice pipefitting as his job and after in boot camp was told no room at this time, that's when he chose corpsman and has gotten excited about it, I will continue to pray,
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Eolia, they are all overwhelmed just tell him to keep studing. It is so intense he will get used to the pace.
  • eolia (ship 10/div 257)

Thank you I will tell him, he said he is studing today and tomorrow with his study group, Your right he will get used to the pace just like everything else

  • UFQ202- Ship 12, Div 231

Your son will be fine. Just needs to find a group to study with and then not stress. I am a retired HM1 so I speak from experience. My #3 son is there going to Corps school too. Being a HM came in handy last night when my oldest son called crying because he was in pain. I drove to his house and we ended up going to the ER. He has a kidney stone. He made me laugh when the Dr came in and told him the news. He told the Dr- I knew that because my mom is a retired HM1 and that's what she said it was. Then it turns out the Dr's Dad was a HM during Vietnam and with the Marines.

  • karenmjm

eolia. . .remind your sailor the Navy wants him to succeed and will do everything they can to help him in that endeavor.
  • Hilarie

How long is the Corpsman A school?  A year?  And then off to C school?

I'm still unsure of where exactly the A school is.  On the internet it looks like it's in San Antonio, but my son's recruiter thinks it's in Great Lakes.

  • TexasDocMom

Hi, Hilarie...please check the METC link up above these posts for  information on A Schools and many of the C Schools for Corpsman. As of April this year, all Corpsmen are training in San Antonio. As with most recruiters (just my opinion, of course) your son's recruiter doesn't know squat!

I forget how long it is, been a while since my son was in A School. But there are links above to groups with current information and moms who are in your same situation, so please take a look...and welcome!

  • MONICA

Devil Doc Mom - I am new to the Corpsman group but I was just reading some things on here and I just wanted to let you know that I am praying for you and your son.  I could feel how much you are worried in what you wrote and I think you have every right to worry.  Whoever told you that you didn't have faith, can't have a child in the military.  I can tell you have faith but are just a loving mother that needs her son to be safe from harm.
  • karenmjm

Hilarie. . .I believe A school is 14 weeks long.  Twelve weeks of class room instructions and two weeks of clinical practice.  As with everything Navy, don't count the number of weeks and make plans to go to the A school graduation.  My sailor did not do the two weeks of clinicals, instead he was shipped off to C school after his 12 weeks.  Class rank is everything in A school, and they will know their class rank after every test.  Number 1 in the class gets to pick from all the open billets (jobs) available upon A school graduation, whether that be a duty station or open positions in C schools.
  • GrandmaB

My grandson just arrived at A School.  He formally attended Nuke A School in Charleston.  Will he repeat phase 1 again?  His rank is E4 and I am wondering how many other E4's will be there.  It seems like most of the incoming personnel are coming right out of bootcamp?
  • TexasDocMom

For the most part, yes GrandmaB, but I do know another young man who has bee IT for the last two years heading for corpsman school as well. Obviously, your grandson will have a head's up or two on the others, so he'll probably do great!

  • eolia (ship 10/div 257)

My son took his first test and said he scored 85 and he sounded like he had a little more confidence, said he studied a lot and also studied with his study group. I told him one test at a time, he really wants to go to C school right after but we will see, thanks for all the comments and support, does anyone know of a good place to stay when i go down and visit?
  • TexasDocMom

I would check that link above for the A School Corpsman Group. eolia, they probably have up to date information. Or check for hotels around Fort Sam in San Antonio. I think that METC link had some info for families as well.
  • elizabeth

Eolia, I just went to see my son in San Antonia a week ago, I bid for a room on Price Line and stayed at the Hilton on the River Walk for $69.00 a night, you can self park or valet park,  parking is not on the hotel property, about a 1/2 block away.  It's only about 10 minutes to the base from there.
  • GrandmaB

Thanks TexasDocMom.  Hoping we will hear from him tonight or tomorrow to learn more about when school begins etc.  He is looking forward to Corpsman.  This group sounds like it will be a wonderful source of information and support.
  • UFQ202- Ship 12, Div 231

We stayed on the base in the "Army" hotel. We were in the General's house that had been made into hotel rooms. It cost us 106/night. Our room had a living room and two bedrooms and a bath. We got a full breakfast in the morning. This place was amazing especially if you love old buildings. This house was over 150 years old. Next time we go down to visit we are staying at the old hospital which was built in 1860.The number is 210-357-2705. If you go to the web sight they don't have rooms but if you call they usually have some. Makes it super easy being on the same base as corps school.
  • MomByHeart

Hi Hilarie...A school  is about 12 weeks and then they get some time off before they go to their next assignment or school...at least mine did last December.  After A school mine went to train with the marines in N. Carolina.    That was from January to March and then he went to his first assignment.
  • medic mom

Hello everyone! I am new here. My son will be attending school in about a week. Just wanted to connect with others who are in the same boat. So to speak. Cannot wait to get to know you.
