Hi, I’m new to the site.  I have been searching the internet allot and driving myself just crazy.  I decided to stick to this site, I know I can count on other Mothers, to be truthful and understanding.  My son just signed contract with Navy for 8 yrs., 6 active.  Seems like a very long time for a 19 year old to really understand that.  Contract says: New Accession Training Hospital Corpsman-Fleet Marine (NAT/HMFM) Class "A" School Guarantee.  Then lists: HM8404 Attend Class "C" School immediately following successful completion of Class "A" school.  I'm driving myself crazy with all the internet searching.  WHAT DOES ALL THIS REALLY MEAN?  His recruiter is not very good, enough on that subject.  He leaves for boot 11/22 I know that's in GL, A school is now SA, TX, right?  What about that C school?  Thanks for any and all information. This is really what he wants so I'm trying to be supportive and just understand it all so that I can.

Welcome, ladies!! First I'd encourage you to take a look above the discussion section above this posting area, find those links that might apply to your status...and find the groups on N4M that are focused on the step where your son or daughter is right now. Take a close look at the METC web site, that's the one about San Antonio and all that is going on there for training.
  • eolia (ship 10/div 257)

Elizabeth thanks so much, I do plan on staying on River Walk, I can't wait to go

  • TexasDocMom

Well, hopefully, we'll have better weather for you eolia! and will be done with our 80 days of 100++ weather and no rain...Dry cold front coming in tomorrow evening, hopefully only in the 90's for most of September!
  • mamawalrus

leaglen....A school is in San Antonio now.  IF he graduates the top of his class he will be able to pick which C school he would like to attend,, they usually get to look at that around week 7 I think... Of course as you know there is never a 100% on anything in the Navy....the choosing goes from the top on down.. so he does get to wish for a home base if he does get to pick a C school but certainty he will get it.. My son was not top of the class, he did want a C school,, he picked NC and got it.. He is green side and going to FMTB in October.  He is loving where he is at.  So depending on what you DS will want will depend on where he goes.  Not sure about the FMF part of this.. I believe you have earn that. I am sure someone here will know more.  Hope this helps some..
  • HvnlySno (S11, DIV 276)

I think you're right JLC...sound like Leaglen's son is reserves. My BF is and he already knows where he's going for C school. He still has to
Be in the top 10 of his class, I think mainly to ensure he qualifies.
  • TexasDocMom

If his contract reads "6 active"...that's active duty sounding to me, not reserves. It's my understanding that all corpsmen now go to FMTB before any other C school.  Leagan, please take a look at the links above...see if there is someone on the METC link that you might email or call for more information.
  • eolia (ship 10/div 257)

I have a question what is FMTB school, is this the school that you go with the Marines?  My son hopes to go to C school right across the street from where he is at now, he said his good friend was Gaurnteed a C school  after A School, but we know that can change at anytime, it's the Navy

  • TexasDocMom

eolia, please take a look at the links above the discussion section for more information on C schools (check the METC link) and FMTB. There are two FMTB schoos, both are listed above, one in California at Camp Pendleton, the other in NCarolina at Camp Lajuene.
  • karenmjm

Has the FMTB requirement changed in the last couple of months?  My sailor went straight from A school to C school in May of this year.  I was thinking he might have to go to FMTB after C school, but that won't be until next May, so it's still the "wait and see".

Motherhen6902-   The PIR is a must go.  We also stayed at the Ramada, and we liked it very much.  There was a very nice restaurant right inside the premises that we ate at often.  The Ramada also had a complimentary breakfast the next morning that was fantastic . The Ramada had a Meet and Greet the night before the PIR which we attended, and we thought it was very nicely done.  I met some of the wonderful Navy moms that I would talk to on the PIR site for my sailor.  Book as soon as you can so you can get a good rate.  I booked about 6 weeks before PIR for the Ramada.   I booked my flight about 3 weeks prior to the PIR.  I hope this helps.

We stayed at Days Inn in Libertyville. Isn't there a really reasonable Navy Lodge on the base itself? anybody know? is there a PIR group on NavyForMoms?
  • UFQ202- Ship 12, Div 231

We stayed at the Navy Lodge at Great Lakes. It is 5 minutes from the base and very affordable. We paid $65/night and no taxes. Some of the rooms have a kitchen. The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. There is a breakfast in the morning and the people were really nice. You just have to list your sailor as the sponsor. The number is 847-689-1485.

  • karenmjm

We also stay at the Navy Lodge. . .I agree, beds were comfortable, rooms and building were very nice.  Plus you are very close to your sailor.
  • Cali-Mom (Beagles)

My son came home again this past weekend. He appreciates the washer/dryers at home than on base.  I'm just glad we get to see him every weekend. He is loving working at the hospital. Last week he was in the ER and Pediatric ward. I can't believe he is doing EKGs, IVs, and drawing blood and getting so much experience in such lil time. He starts FMTB next month and he is looking forward to it.  I hope he can continue to come home after he starts.

Motherhen: I agree PIR is a must. Hope you can go. Don't expect to spend to much time with your SR after graduation. That was a let down. But we enjoyed the sights of Chicago....all in all a great experience and you meet wonderful people at the Meet n Greet.

  • Tamme

Make sure you use your graduation discount code at all the hotels.

  • Kym Ship 11 Div 118

We  stayed at LaQuinta and it was $59 a night plus tax.  Breakfast included.  Clean and very nice stay.  Very friendly.
  • Tamme

We stayed at Homewood Suites because we needed two bedrooms and it was cheaper with the discount to do that instead of two separate rooms.  They serve free dinner, beer and wine every week day night  except Friday night.  They also serve a hot breakfast each morning.  On visits other than PIR, we have stayed at the Navy Lodge and it is very close to the base.

Motherhen-i just got back from my SR's PIR. It is a must. We stayed at the Ramada and it was great. You don't get much time with them but enjoy it. If you can go to the airport with your sailor please do. He can get you a gate pass to go sit at the gate with him til he leaves. I did that and loved it. I also got to say goodbye and good luck to all of the sailors leaving for A school.

    Cali-Mom-

I am so jealous that you get to see your cub so often.  Mine is so far away.

    Mary  :)

  • Cali-Mom (Beagles)

Motherhen, We stayed at the Springhill Suites by Marriott. The rooms are all suites and slightly bigger and have microwave and mini fridge and free breakfast which lowered our costs. There were 3 of us in the room but it slept 5. The hotel was across from a shopping area with a Walmart and restaurants. The staff was great. Hope this helps. Have a great time.
  • medic mom

The ship out time varies. My son flew out early afternoon. I saw others there that flew out later in the afternoon. He had his orders a couple of days before his PIR. Just depends on when they get them. We drove IP also. Stayed told Sunday. I would recommend staying to at least Saturday. Depending on when he flies out.
  • medic mom

I meant drove up. Not IP. Sorry.
  • UFQ202- Ship 12, Div 231

You can always book the extra day and cancel if needed. Just make sure when you book it. I know you can do that at the Navy Lodge. Our sailor left at 2am and went to O'hare airport to wait for his flight at 10am. His friends got to see him at the airport to give him his backpack with phone and laptop. He is at Corps school so we have seen him twice since he left bootcamp.

Is anyone able to explain to me why my son (and others) is not getting his full paycheck again?  He has not been given an explanation either.  I know that a while back this was happening when there was the scare that the government was going to "shut down" but I thought that was over with.

  • eolia (ship 10/div 257)

My son has not said anything about his check being short and I know if it would have been he would have mentioned something.  My son is in A school maybe that is the reason
  • TexasDocMom

My son tells me this was an Austin native, prayers to his family. I hope we can attend his services in Killeen on Tuesday.

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–September 11, 2011.  The Department of Defense announced today the death of a sailor who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Petty Officer Brian K. Lundy, 25, of Austin, Texas, died while conducting a dismounted patrol in Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan, on Sept. 9. Lundy was assigned as a hospital corpsman to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

On the news, Monday night, there was a statement made about our deployed troops should be 1/2 the number of what they are today in about a year.  That is not any conciliation to this Corspman's family.  I pray for the day our military is not actively engaged in any conflict.
  • NavyWife

Our paycheck was short but I think it's because he's in A School and it's $200 for food every month. If it's maybe something else though let me know! I don't know of any other deductions.
  • corpsmanwifeschu

My heart goes out to the Corpsman we lost and his family.

  • navymomsrock

I will pray for the Corpsman we lost and his family.
  • TexasDocMom

The obit is on www.statesman.com That is where I left my comment on the guest book for the family of PO Lundy.
  • Tamme

The poor young man from the RR also lost his girlfriend in a car accident while he was on deployment.  So sad.
  • TexasDocMom

Maybe contact the Navy/Marine Relief? I'm sure they will be working with this young sailor who lost his family.

This mom who was killed was active in a group I belong to on facebook, MMOT...Military Moms of Texas. Those women are just devastated.

One woman is looking for a home for Derrick's two cats.

  • TexasDocMom

MMOT mom is reporting that Derrick is staying in a hotel, and she'll get a secure mailing address from him. It probably will end up being the same one that you posted, mamawalrus, but just want to confirm.

  • Rachel's Mom (Ship 02 Div 929)

My daughter just graduated "A" school on 9/13/11. (170 Alpha)  She is home on leave with us right now :)   She leaves for Naples Italy on 9/30/11...Anyone else have someone in Naples???
  • MomByHeart

Not Naples, but my corpsman is in Sicily.  He loves it there...so beautiful.
  • Pam

Welcome Rachel's Mom!!  My son graduated A School last October and is now stationed in Naples.  He loves it and is getting to see a lot of Europe on his weekends and time off.  Let me know if you have any questions.
  • Rebecca

Hi there! I'm new to this page because my son is new to corpsman school at Ft. Sam Houston. He arrived there on 9/10 but hasn't started school yet. My husband is retired Air Force, and I know very little about the Navy and how school works. Any advice and knowledge any one has to share would be greatly appreciated!
  • TexasDocMom

Hi, Rebecca! welcome...and if your son is responsible for bringing rain to San Antonio, please ask him to visit up here in Austin...drought still reigns here.

Please take a look at the links up above, we've put them together over the last couple of years, should be up to date, and see what information you can read, and what questions you have about any topic.

    and again, welcome!

  • Jana

My son arrived at Ft. Sam Houston on August 27 and just started school yesterday.   This is my youngest son, but my first experience with any branch of the military, so it is all new to me too.   He said he made 100 on his first test.   I am very proud of him!
  • TexasDocMom

Ladies, be sure to check out the link above to the group for moms with sailors in A School, it'll be a lot of help to you. Since most of our kids were in the A School in Great Lakes, those moms will have more up to date  information about San Antonio and Fort Sam. Altho, I can answer most general Central Texas questions. My son is stationed in San Antonio as an instructor but not at the A School, but he'll hunt down some answers if I ask...
  • Rebecca

@Jana So your son waited waited awhile for his classes to start then? My son told me that it could be two or more weeks before they are able to start. I wonder why the wait is so long. Congratulations on his perfect score, that must have felt great! Believe me, even having experience with the Air Force hasn't helped much with the Navy-its all new to me!

@TexasDocMom-I'll see what I can do about getting that rain to you. All kidding aside, I hope you all get some rain soon. How long has your son been in the Navy?

  • TexasDocMom

My son entered the Navy in Sept 05. And we'll take that rain, thanks.

I attended the funeral service for PO Brian Lundy yesterday, it was an amazing service, full of music, love, faith, family and a lot of military folks there, including many other corpsmen that Brian had served with in the last 5 years. The son of a Brig General was a Marine who is serving in Afghanistan with Brian when he was killed, and the General spoke after the Admiral who is Commander of all our corpsmen. The general read the text of the service that the Marines and sailors held in A, and told of a group of Seabees that traveled some dangerous roads to join their brothers in support of Brians Marines in Afghanistan after his death. Photos here:

  • Jana

@ Rebecca-yes, he first thought that school would start Sept. 12--about 2 weeks after he got there.  I texted him on that day and asked him how the first day of class went and he said that they hadn't started yet.  I asked him when his class was going to start and his response was "when they tell us to".  He did finally start yesterday, but had to wait almost a month since he got there for it to start.  In the meantime, he did a lot of watch I think.  Hope yours gets to start soon.  Yeah--we are finally getting some rain in East Texas!!
  • stevensmom

hello ladies..anyone else attending f.m.t.b. graduation sept 30th, at camp pendleton?.do you know if we need a parking pass?

  • Rebecca

Thank you for all the great information. Yes, my son mentions "watch" alot, so I can assume that's what he's doing.

I am saddened by reading of the loss of a Corpsman. My prayers to his family and friends, my gratitude to him for his service.
