my daughter started working nights and she loves it so far! A more relaxed setting for her... she took test for advancement yesterday, said it was hard but learned alot! Won't know if she passed for 3 mo. Best of luck to her! Does any one know if there is a lodge on base (balboa)! Would love to plan a visit...

  • UFQ202- Ship 12, Div 231

There is not a place to stay on the base. The Navy Lodge is near 32nd street and the rooms are nice.

For those of you who have had loved ones already complete A-school in SA what week did they choose their orders?

Also what day of the week did your loved ones graduate? Did they get to come straight home after the graduation?

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Kathyproudcorpsmanmom, how long did it take to straighten out your son's orders? My son graduated c school. 6 weeks ago - picked orders 2-3 weeks before graduation - he us still in holding company. Thx
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

KathyPCmom. Thanks for the info. My son is getting pretty bored and frustrated doing nothing. He just wants to work. SA really is more of a tourist site and we have done most of what we can. We live within 6 hrs of the base so it gas been nice as he has been coming home to visit at least once a month. Thanks very much for the info best of luck to your son and you.

Thank you so much KathyProudCorpsmanmom! You're awesome. I love the support group that this site has to offer!

Have to shout it out on all my groups.

My daughter-in-law is Sailor of the Quarter on the USS Sampson (DDG 102).  Hurray for her!

  • velvetlace

Congratulations to your daughter-in-law.   Bravo zulu!!!

  • Jana

docsmom--Congratulations!!  That is quite an honor.  I know you are very proud of her!!

  • mamawalrus

Congrats on your DIL!   What an honor

1windhaven...any word on where he will go?  Glad he is at least able to come home or you see him to help with all that waiting around.

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

    Docsmom congratulations to your DIL.

Mamawalrus, nothing yet. We keep waiting. But you are right it has been nice having him so close. Best of luck to N.
  • jennyemt713

    Congrats Docmom!

  • Pam

Congratulations to your DIL, DocsMom!  What a great honor, but from what I hear, a lot of work also.

  • mamawalrus

Woo Hoo.. just bought airline ticket to go see my son in NC///

Could not go another 7/9 months of not seeing that boy, hahahaha

Cannot wait to hang out with him and just be able to hug him!

  • Jana

Just arrived in Pensacola about midnite after driving from Texas today to see my son graduate from AVT C School tomorrow and spend a few days with him.  Next stop for him will be Italy, but he will be in holding here in Pensacola until he leaves for Italy.  So proud of him!!

  • IDCmom#1

Jana, wish graduation had been last week when the weather was really pleasant.  I hope the storms forecasted for tomorrow and the next day don't interfere with your visit.

I hope nothing is "booming" in the sky when my plane takes off tomorrow and I hope California has warmed up because I am not taking a lot of cold weather clothing.

  • IDCmom#1

Oh, and most importantly, congratulations to your son.

  • IDCmom#1

So that song, "never rains in Southern Californa" is just plain false advertising?

I thought I would freeze last year when I was out there in the March time frame but was almost fooled by the warm days my son has been telling me about.  Have my jacket ready to pack.

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Mamawalrus, so glad you will be angle to see N before he leaves. Have a great trip..
  • MomByHeart

Jana...My sailor is in Italy, too.  Where in Italy will yours be? Mine is at Sigonella.

  • Jana

He will be at the naval hospital in Naples.
  • sheryl Navy 2

Hi Jana . My Sr has been in Italy , just outside Naples since early Feb . He loves it there . Got to have his first patients yesterday :)
  • navymomsrock

My son is in Italy also.  He is at Sigonella too :) He helped deliver his first baby yesterday.

  • MomByHeart

@Navymomsrock...that is awesome!  Mine doesn't see patients often.  They have him doing other stuff.  I'm guessing the know each other.  How long has yours been there?

  • navymomsrock

@mombyheart he has been there since February. He graduated A school in early February and pretty much headed straight to Italy with a stop in Virginia.
  • Kahli's Mom

Just had a question for all you experienced moms out there:  My daughter will be heading to A school in Texas and I am seeing on some other places that it would be good for me to get her some items to help her study, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • 1proudmom

Hi Kahlis mom....did you get a response regarding items to help your daughter study....maybe on another discussion/group? I would also be interested in that response since my SR could also use some sort of study guide, books, anything thats going to make it easier.

  • Celina

iproudmom and Kahlis mom. I read somewhere in this site that the Anatomy flash cards and coloring book were helpful. I asked my son and he said to send them since he was on hold for over 4 weeks so he could study   He said he has used them, he just started school last week, so time will tell wether they were worth the money or not.  good luck.

  • TexasDocMom

  • bdmama

There are two coloring books, which one?  Anatomy or Physiology?

  • HM__Mom Ruth

O.K.  I think I created this monster so I will try to tame it.  When my daughter was leaving boot camp, a kind corpsman suggested that she get an anatomy coloring book.  Well being the ubermom I am, I bought her not only a coloring book but flash cards--Kaplan.  According to my daughter, both were useful, but the flash cards more than the coloring book (for those of you that have to pick one or the other).  The bottom line is that they will need to know some anatomy before they graduate,  I suspect that these items will be even more useful if they decide to pursue a nursing degree and need to know a substantial amount of anatomy.

  • TexasDocMom

Of course. I put it on our group for Moms/Dads with Kids in Iraq/Afghanistan...always good to get the tears out and wash your face and move on with the day...these videos help with that and it helps to know other people are sharing the same feelings and fear that you are when you have a child in a war zone.

  • mamawalrus

    what a beautiful video TDM

  • TexasDocMom

Rita, I'm sorry you're having a hard time with your son at boot camp. But I am going to have to ask you to remove your son's name/address from this public board. We follow OPSEC regs here, if  you are not familiar with those regulations, please just google the OPSEC to read about it. No names, no addresses, no arrival/departure dates or locations, nothing to connect a parent to a sailor, soldier, marine or air man should be put out publicly on any board. It is a huge concern for the Navy, and the admins here will have to remove your post if you do not. Thanks.

  • NanZam

HI Monica,  I  know how you feel...I felt that way when my son left for boot camp...but remember it's only for 8.5 weeks and they go fast...and when you receive the phone call you are going to feel soooooo happy, and proud.  He is learning so much, and is working so hard towards his goal.  Prayer helped me so much and also coming on this site to read all the postings helped me.  My son is now working on his second year.   I see him as a young man, independant, and working toward his goal of becoming a nurse...God Bless, and lots of hugs...It will be alright...

  • Kahli's Mom

Thanks, I ordered from Amazon anatomy and physiology flashcards, a coloring book, and I also found anatomy and physiology for dummies workbook.  lol  They have just about anything for dummies:) OH!  and I found some medical terminology flashcards.  I used those and aced by exam, they worked great!

  • 1proudmom

Thank you Celina & Barbie.I will start looking for those online.Anything to make this whole journey easier!

  • bdmama

We are considering getting him a laptop for his graduation gift (going onto Corpsman school right after).  Some questions:  If he doesn't have his own, is there a computer lab for sailors to use?  We can't decide whether to get the laptop here at home, and bring it, or can we possibly purchase one at the NEX (after PIR)  for him?

  • Tamme

We also bought our son a computer for PIR graduation.  He truly needed it during Corpsman school.  There is a great computer on sale for today's special on Bestbuy.com.

  • tyler'smom88

I am new to this group. You have some great information! My son will be heading to a school soon. Do you know how long they have to be at a school before they are allowed to go off base?

  • HM__Mom Ruth

I think they can go off base on a limited basis almost immediately.  To get the best info on A school, Join the San Antonio Corpsman A School Group.  There is a link under the OPSEC visual on this page.

  • tyler'smom88

Thanks for your help! I have joined the other group also.

"HOW TO SIMULATE LIFE IN THE NAVY"

    1. Buy a dumpster, paint it gray and live in it for 6 months straight.

    2. Run all of the piping and wires inside your house on the outside of the walls.

    3. Pump 10 inches of nasty, crappy water into your basement, then pump it out, clean up, and paint the basement "deck gray."

    4. Every couple of weeks, dress up in your best clothes and go the scummiest part of town, find the most run down, trashy bar you can, pay $10 per beer until you're hammered, then walk home in the freezing cold.

    5. Perform a weekly disassembly and inspection of your lawnmower.

    6. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays turn your water temperature up to 200 degrees, then on Tuesday and Thursday turn it down to 10 degrees. On Saturdays, and Sundays declare to your entire family that they used too much water during the week, so all showering is secured.

    7. Raise your bed to within 6 inches of the ceiling.

    8. Have your next door neighbor come over each day at 5am, and blow a whistle so loud that Helen Keller could hear it and shout "Reveille, Reveille, all hands heave out and trice up".

    9. Have your mother-in-law write down everything she's going to do the following day, then have her make you stand in the back yard at 6am and read it to you.

    10. Eat the raunchiest Mexican food you can find for three days straight, then lock yourself out of the bathroom for 12 hours, and hang a sign on the door that reads "Secured-contact OA division at X-3053."

    11. Submit a request form to your father-in-law, asking if it's OK for you to leave your house before 3pm.

    12. Invite 200 of your not-so-closest friends to come over, then board up all the windows and doors to your house for 6 months. After the 6 months is up, take down the boards, wave at your friends and family through the front window of your home...you can't leave until the next day you have duty.

    13. Shower with above-mentioned friends.

    14. Make your family qualify to operate all the appliances in your home (i.e., Dishwasher operator, blender technician, etc).

    15. Walk around your car for 4 hours checking the tire pressure every 15 minutes.

    16. Sit in your car and let it run for 4 hours before going anywhere. This is to ensure your engine is properly "lighted off."

    17. Empty all the garbage bins in your house, and sweep your driveway 3 times a day, whether they need it or not. (Now sweepers, start your brooms, clean sweep down fore and aft, empty all trashcans over the fantail).

    18. Repaint your entire house once a month.

    19. Cook all of your food blindfolded, groping for any spice and seasoning you can get your hands on.

Velvetlace, I am laughing so hard I can't stand it.  I am at work so people are looking at me strangely.

  • medic mom

OMG Velvetlace that is great. Absolutely love it. Thanx for the laugh.
  • zStratMom

OMG. I nearly pee'd my pants I was laughing so hard. Sending email around the world so others can share the joy and look as foolishly hysterical. Thank you, thank you.

  • MomP(Helen)

Velvetlace, OMG if you only knew how true it all is. Laughing and shaking my head in agreement.
