900's division sailors

  • diane {Shawns mom}

Well I am one, my son PIR on 3/21-div. 918 his div. did state flags...I have some answers , since my son has completed BC....
One thing is How are they chosen, well my son had NO muscial experience..he did know how to march! but he said when they got off the bus @ the RTC some lady was there asking lots of questions-they are bascially chosen for how they appear...looks, dress, attitude, whatever reason..it seems to up to a select few..I guess you have to look the part...But over all it is GRAND to have your child in a 900 division.........

5.0 is the best in an inspection!! As far as performing he will perform at two or three PIRs and they perform at their own..They will not march in like all the other DIVs. I believe that it takes several 900 div to perform all the needs at a PIR. My son was in the the front of the Drill hall and opened doors for High ranking officials and Special Honorary guests.

Hey All! My son is in Div 937 Ship 06. He was in his high school's marching band and played the trumpet and now I understand he is in his divisions band. We are so proud of all of this that he is doing. He didn't make a big deal about it in his one letter we have received but now I understand it is a good thing to be in a 900 div. I am so new to all this military stuff I know absolutely nothing and I will probably ask alot of questions. He arrived on 6/3. I am hoping and praying he is adjusting well as I know the rest of you are hoping also.

On the Navy chat I had last night on 'Accelerate your Life', the Navy person said there is no rhyme or reason necessarily to what Div/ship they are assigned to. I was asking since I hadn't found a lot of daughters on PIR 12/5 or in Damage Control like Katie. Thought maybe they were grouped together at BC, but that's not the case.
  • MarianneKT's Mom

Typically they get to write on Sundays. We received 2 letters from Katie this week since Veterans Day was a 'holiday' schedule. I just rec'd a phone call from her today;) Her PIR is 12/5. Katie works in the mail room as part of her schedule. Her Div will perform at the next 2 grads and their own.

Donna - She says she delivers packages to the compartments and sees her letters when she is sorting, so maybe. At PIR she said she will be standing in front of an Admiral or making sure people don't walk in from of others, stay off the rails, or?? We will find out for sure after the PIR on 11/21.

All 900 divisions are performance - band, choir, drill - for graduation - they also have other duties like handing out programs, keeping order, etc.

Gang - each class (PIR) has a "900" division. Division 907 is the designation for the 900 division graduating on 1/2; Division 908 graduates on 1/9, Division 909 graduates on 1/16, etc. These divisions are picked for "performance" experience like band, choir, flag, rifle teams ... plus kids with athletic and/or military experience (like military schools)...plus ASVAB scores. Our son is in 907, and indicated it took about a week to get their division "filled out". They "pick" them over the first couple of days I believe. So each 900 division has their own cadre of percussion, flags, rifles, body snatchers, etc. It will be really interesting to heaer these stories on PIR day! Glen

Donna - for sure we'll post some pix of the 2 Jan PIR - maybe we can catch some of the 908 kids in there. Glen

Have you heard about the "Blue Candle Lighting" being scheduled on Christmas Day? It is a way to honor those Sailors that will not be home for Christmas. What a nice tribute to our Sailors!

Please go to Events and click on Blue Candle Lighting, we are tracking how many candles will be lit in our Sailors' honor and where you are located.

Let's do this in our "Navy for Moms" style - can we get 9000 plus candles lit on Christmas Day?!!

Yes, they can buy phone cards at the Exchange - it's just a matter of when they get to go there. I believe in our son's division, they sent a couple of recruits over to the Ex every few days and they were allowed to bring stuff back for their divisionmates as long as their division mates had cash to pay for it.

Our son left for boot camp with $15 in his wallet, a few weeks before graduation he asked if we could send him a few singles - so he would have some small bills if someone was making an exchange run.

Caress - any pix from your PIR?
  • Vivian and Glen H.

PNDad - My son is in 907 and we'll be taking pictures at PIR on 1/2. I'll put them on my page from the hotel, probably on Saturday. If anyone finds pix from 12/24 PIR drop me a note! My son was in that one yesterday and if I can find video I can find him based on what he told me today.

All - our son graduated yesterday (1/2). I'll just say this - it is everything you expect and a lot more. The tradition, military courtesy, patriotism exhibited by everyone in the building is just awesome. As an aside...this morning we were coming out of the Navy Exchange (store) on base around 0800 when all of the sudden, all over the entire base, everyone in uniform stopped, turned in one direction where the sound of the national anthem was being played over a sitewide PA system, came to attention and held a long salute. Evidently the colors were being raised. It was just another really neat moment that reminded my wife and I what our son has become part of. I got chocked up just standing there on the sidewalk. Anyway, here are some details from the PIR ceremony yesterday, listing what the 900 Divisions did who were there. The Honor Guard was from 907. The Drill team (rifles), bands and Bluejacket Choir were from Division 909 and the State Flags were carried by Division 908. All of them did an awesome job. I put a couple pictures on my site and captioned them with the division number so you can search them from the photos tab...but they haven't been approved by the admin yet. Hopefully that will happen tomorrow. You folks ENJOY your PIR weekend!

  • Mari

Melanie I will be praying for your son and all the others graduating this Friday. My son will be graduating April 17th.
  • Mari

Mary Beth Congratulations on your new sailor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So happy to see that your officially a Navy mom. Have a wonderful weekend at PIR, it will be so special. Let me know if you have any questions.

Just a note to new parents on this site. Be aware that we heard when our son was in bootcamp that the RDCs to sometimes check this group to pick up stuff about the recruits in their divisions...so don't say anything or repeat anything on here that you wouldn't want to have get back to them (like real personal stuff). They have their hands full already and don't need any source of special attention. Also a good idea to not have your last name or the recruit's last name on your profile.

Got my first letter today. Christian made band playing saxophone. I'm so glad that he's playing again. He hasn't played last 2 years in h.s. so he's pretty excited. Dad and I are also proud he made it. Don't know about performing at his own PIR, no mention of it, but I'm sure he'll keep us posted. I'm very happy mom getting the first letter. Proud of all our kids! Good evenings and fantastic weekends to all.

Hey thanks April. Letters are short, don't really say much except "doing fine" Hoped for a phone call, but no such luck, maybe this weekend. I"ll have to ask him next time I write when his first PIR performance is. He loved band but you know how it goes in high school, sports, girls, required classes, DEP. something had to be pushed aside.

Ship 06, Div 945 marching in the Labor Day Parade today in Zion IL. If anyone sees any pictures or video let me know, would love to see. I only have 18 more days til my son's PIR, getting pretty excited, can't wait to see him and experience the PIR (I hear so many WONDERFUL things about it) God bless our kids and all Navy families...GO NAVY!!!
  • Christine-OS2 proud mom

Mara, go with address your sweetie gave you...He's there, the recruiter isn't. My son's address changed within a week after he left for bootcamp.
  • Christine-OS2 proud mom

900 divisions are "honor" divisions....they get kids for band, color guard, drill teams. They usually have a couple extra weeks of bootcamp but worth it. These kids work even harder to do well with their Navy training but have extra drill instructions and rehersals so when they go out they represent the USN and RTC with pride!!! It's a wonderful thing these kids do I'm so proud of them! Go Ship 06, Div 945...you're a week away from PIR!!! God bless you and all families.
  • Christine-OS2 proud mom

Ship 06/Div 945 is at battlestations tonight. Prayers for them to do well and give us moms a wonderful phone call tomorrow as USN Sailors...God bless our kids and all Navy families.

O.k. Division 945 is preparing for BS21 as we speak. Please keep them in your prayers tonight. They have worked so hard up to this point and pray that God keeps them safe and they work as one unit for a successful exercise. God bless our kids, God bless ALL Navy families.
