My son got to pick orders today and will be going to Japan if he gets what he picked.  He seems pleased with them.  I just hope he gets  a couple week leave before he is gone for two years.  We haven't seen much of him and miss him...

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

DJFnine, that is the weird thing he was 6 or 7 so he picked Fl from the pool of orders they had to chose from while they were in C school. Everyone else has already received their orders and are gone. I will suggest he follow up with his instructor and/chief. Thanks so much for your suggestions .
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

DJFnine, pd you are right patience is something we are learning quickly :)
  • kimberlydale (corpsmanmom)

Today was a big day for those graduating on May 5. They picked there orders and from the little bit of news I have gotten so far -Oahu, Italy, Spain and Bremerton,WA. went fast ....those were my sons hopes.....but he picked 11th and will be going to Naha (Okinawa) Japan. He will be attached to a Marine unit and will first go to FMTB for two months - then on to Japan. I am very emotional today - I think this should be an exciting time but I am having a hard time with it?!!! He also stated something about hazard pay , needless to say that makes me a little concerned. Well, I hope all the seaman got there orders and best of luck to all !!!!

  • LeysaNavymom

hello again to the group...=) our son John picked Okinawa Japan too.  He wanted Italy or Spain, we also would prefered Europe a closer time zone.    Well now I guess we will have to talk to him early morning Chicago time, it will be evening time for him..   We told him he better start learning to eat Sushi...he smile...or at least Asian cuisine.    they will do all right where ever they go, i am sure.  its good for them to experience other cultures/languages/foods ...its all good stuff.   i think he said he will have 14 days off after May 5.   I am sure he will want to come home and spend time with us and his high school friends.

Thank you to all of you for sharing  your Navy information, so we know what they are doing, what is the process etc...=)

Has anyone stayed at the Spring Hill Suites near Rivercenter Mall in San Antonio?  The SHS we stayed in for PIR was awesome and I'm hoping this one is too.  Appreciate your feedback. (btw - got a really good rate with rewards)

  • brandon'sgirl

Congrats to all the families who finally know their loved ones orders! I can't wait until it's my turn except my sailor hasn't even classed up yet. lol what a longgg process, but the Navy is defintely good at teaching patience.

Hey guys...I need some help ;-). My husband and brother are driving to Ft. Sam Wednesday this coming week, to fix our boy's truck. They have decided against drive 8 hours, fix it and drive 8 hours back home. I was hoping to book a room on base, mostly for convenience and security. However, I don't know which hotel on base is bookable by civilians, or if that is even possible. Does anyone know?  Any recommendations?

  • Tink

Doreen, they are all bookable by civilians. I stayed at the Sam Houston house, very nice, my daughter and her BF stayed at bldg 592 and didn't really care for it. But, if it is only for one night, it will probably work. Bldg 592 is the cheapest

Hopefully my sailor will finally be able to do his indoctrination tomorrow, Woo Hoo! He has been waiting for so long I thought this week would never come. What will the indoctrination consist of?

  • Amac23

Hello, everyone! My sailor graduates boot camp in three weeks and goes on to SA.

I have a question about clothing: do they wear uniforms at any time in SA, or is it all civilian? I am thinking of packing him a suitcase to send with him at the airport, since it's probably cheaper than shipping from CA, but wasnt sure how much he'd need...

  • sheryl Navy 2

Hi Amac .... Don't plan on giving your SR anything that wont fit in his black back pack ! I know cell phone , iPod and a laptop is acceptable . Our HN took work out clothes too as he's a gym rat ! Uniforms till phase 1 or 2 I think .
This weekend we managed more for our newly graduated SR as he is spec warfare and going to Coranado in a few weeks from GL . PIR was as wonderful 2 nd time around this past wkend . Glorious weather in GL . Good luck to you and your SR
  • Amac23

    SO helpful- thank you!!

  • KIM756

Hi everyone. My son just finally started A school two weeks ago. He graduated bootcamp 2-3-12. He was in Ship 7 Div 59. Anyone else here from that division or PIR? I was in a different group but there wasn't a lot going on. Glad I found this one. :) I'm looking forward to getting to know you and swapping stories.

Hi Im new to this site and dont know how to see who is in the same bunker as my son anyone know how to find out he just graduated 3/16 n i know his address and room number is if anyone can help that would be nice

  • mome2jord

Amac23, Unfortunately your Sailor will not have much room to take many things with him.  They travel to San Antonio with all their uniforms, boots and everything from boot camp.  They can take one black backpack, but it is already full of quite a few things.  Our son took his laptop and a few small electronics and of course cell phone with him, other than that I have been shipping things down to him.  It does get a bit expensive, but they cannot wear civilian clothes until they get to phase three and it takes a few weeks, so you have time to ship some stuff down there.  I have found shipping UPS is much smoother than the postal service.  The post office took almost two weeks, where UPS takes three days from Arizona.  This means the cookies get there while they are still soft...lol!

  • Doreen(07/272)

We took our son his laptop, his iPad, his phone, and regular underwear and a pair of shorts and tshirt. That was it. he crammed it in his backpack. You can bring a black bag without any logos on it, and they can carry that as well. Our son didn't want to bring another carryon.

  • Doreen(07/272)

I booked the Foulois House, it was the only room opened for unofficial travel.

  • MomP(Helen)

Same here, only laptop which is getting used as a dvd player for movies. She uses smart phone for internet. Guess they had fun last night, (not) storms and tornadoes

  • Amac23

Thanks! This has all been very helpful, and now I can look forward to making him cookies!

  • proudascanbe

PUSHED BACK AGAIN!!! ='( So he was pushed back again, and it's breaking my heart. I think this is a crazy amount of time to wait. He'll be in holding 8 weeks before his classes start!

  • MomP(Helen)

brandon'sgirl, Welcome to the Navy, hurry up and wait. And things are always subject to change. Fleet first.

Good Morning ladies,   It is a beautiful sunny day here in Ohio.

Anyone elses Sailor have a graduation date of May 7?  My son first said it was May 5th, but they changed it to May 7th which is a Monday, which seems odd to me.  Do they have graduations on weekdays?  I am planning to come, but want to make sure I'm coming for the right day. Thanks

  • Crazy Blonde (Ship 2, Div-925)

My son graduates bootcamp on 05-04-12, a Friday. He will be going to A School in San Antonio as an HM (Hospital Corpsman)

Do you think he will transfer out immediately from Great Lakes??? I'm tying to plan my schedule to see him and don't know how long Liberty will be, or if he transfers EARLY Sat AM.

    Thank You, CB

  • theresawb356

Crazy Blonde, When my son went through PIR we had the rest of the day with him, then he had to be back on base in the evening. My son also went to San Antonio and they usually shuttle thme to the airport around 3am and they dont fly out until later in the morning. He will know after PIR, you can meet him at the sirport and spend the rest of the time with him there until he flies out. Make sure you find the USO at the airport and talk to them, you can get a pass to go through security with him and sit at his gate the whole time with him.(They tell them no one can go to the airport, but you can!) Just an FYI, once they get to the airport, you can give him his cell phone, he can take that with him. Dont forget cell phone charger!!

  • Crazy Blonde (Ship 2, Div-925)

Thank You sooo much! Very helpful! :)

  • brandon'sgirl

Congratulations Celina =) I can't wait for my husband to get his orders either ddsweety, but he just started classes yesterday so it will be awhile.

  • CDMom

Congratulations celinamae it is a happy day when they get to pick orders.  My son graduates May 7th hope he gets to come home for a couple weeks before he goes off to Japan.  We haven't seen him since PIR Jan 6th, so we miss him terribly.

  • LeysaNavymom

cd mom, our son yes confirmed is May 7th for his graduation from A school.  he told us not to make expense to fly to SA for his graduation, since is very short, small and quick.  He will try to fly back home to Chicago that afternoon and stay with us for 2 weeks prior going to Okinawa,Japan.   If you have pictures of that day it will be great if you could share it with us.   He is tall and skinny...6'1", 140#s...=)

I am also curiuos like Kimberly...i would imagine they will have similar doorms as they do in SA.,..but if someone has additional information that will be great.

He told us mom i might flight first class to Tokyo...well I said I really doubt.

He said if first class is not full that they usually give priority to military members....is that true?  if so, he has to be lucky that first class is not full.

it would be nice to fly first class to Tokyo since its a 14 hour flight from Ohare to Tokyo....oh well we shall see that part....=)

  • CDMom

Hi Leysa, It is true that they give military priority to fly first class when seats are open.  Caleb Got to fly first class from PIR to San Antonio, which was wonderful because he had the flu and spent the entire day after graduation in bed sick before having to fly the next day.  So it was a great perk.  It would be great to have the long flight first class to Japan.
