    What they drive

    How they live

  • DeuceDogMom

Hi All, my daughter doesn't drive so would she be allowed to have a bicycle?

  • DramaSoul

Marcy...LOL!!!!!!! Sheesh...for what they charge you better believe that's where they live!!!!!!

  • Glo Mom of Future Officer

Thank you all for replying to my comment.

  • OmahaRudy

I've been MIA for a while.

NavygirlzMom, my son knew the date his class would start when he went to SA after boot camp, July 28. He only had a week and a half to wait. He now has his book, along with the EMT test book Marcy suggested, so he's studying already. A couple of his boot camp shipmates are with him--a very motivated bunch! Hopefully they will encourage each other!

Anyone else out there have someone starting A school on Wednesday?
  • bobbysmom5812

My son starts on Wednesday.he was suppose to start last week but he was hospitalized with mono for week and half he just got out Wednesday.
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Craig so sorry, I remember you posting about the shooting but did not know it hit so close to home. That was a lovely article. I think the idea of leaving the desk is pretty cool, kinda like the missing man formation you see planes do. So sorry foe your guys loss.
  • DaniHMItalyMom

My son picks his orders on Monday along with three other classes.  I sure hope there are enough billets to go around.  (I guess it's the beginning of the fiscal year.)  I'm not sure that this is a good or bad thing.  Any thoughts?

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

I would think this should be good, but don't really know. Good luck. Hope he gets what he wants.
  • OmahaRudy

Hey Bobbysmom, our sons will be classmates! Cool!
  • alexcmom

@ DaniHMSchoolMom, just spoke with my son and he said he picks his orders (well he hopes to Pick his orders) on Monday. Class 170?

  • Craig

All, above there is a picture that says "Above all else, do no harm".  Can someone explain what that means and where it comes from?  Is it a command logo? or was it something someone made up?

The reason I ask is I want to design my daughter a challenge coin for the time she has spent at Ft. Sam. I want to have the coin to be something cool that she could have forever.  I know the Air Force is really up on challenge coins, and I know us sailors are too.  I have every challenge coin from every command I was at.

I've been designing the boot camp challenge coins for a private company that only does Navy stuff. I've been doing all the ships in Great Lakes and they've been coming out really nice.  I design them, and write the story about them, and they spend the $$thousands$$ to mint them.  Luckily, Fort Sam is a joint base, so I can design the coin for all 4 services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard). Hopefully they agree to making them, even though they only deal with Navy only stuff.  All I'll say is its a joint service base and it needs to be there. Hopefully, I can convince them to make it.

So, where does that symbol above come from? I want find something that Air Force and Navy sailors can remember. Do tell.....

  • alexcmom

@craig... this is orginally from the Hippocratic Oath. Doctors used to have to "swear in" upon receiving their doctorate and they would repeat the oath. The third line is usually what is referenced . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocratic_Oath

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Craig any chance a coin for ship 3 is in the making?
  • alexcmom

Craig.. do you make coins for individuals and sell them? New to you, so forgive me for asking something I'm sure you get asked constantly.

  • Craig

alex - I only design them, and I write the story on why I made the coin the way I did.  I don't sell them.  A company called PIRGifts sells them on Ebay.  When they asked me to do this, I was kind of happy because the Moms kept buying the wrong coins for their sailors.  I wanted the true story told.  Example, there was 4 Navy ships names USS Chicago (CA-14, CA-29, CA-136, SSN-721), but only one was represent the building in boot camp, the USS Chicago SSN-721,

They (PIRGifts) are actually building their inventory so they redirect people to my website because I agreed to make the story about the coins.  The USS Kennedy is by far the best story because all four Kennedy brothers served in the military.  If you're ever bored, go read it.  You will be guaranteed to learn something.

Here is the USS Kennedy story:

    http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2786

Here is the USS Triton story:

    http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2730

Katze - I have to design the USS Hopper.  A number of the deppers (now sailors) on my website have been asking about it.  It just takes so long to design them.  I have to have them perfect.  I don't want the sailors to have some crappy coin that doesn't mean anything.

Rhonda & Alexcmom - Thanks for the info about the oath.  I haven't a clue about medical stuff.  I have my masters in Electrical Engineering.  I have to teach sailors how electronics works.

To give you an example, here is one unclassified course from one of the "A" schools.  I have to get the sailors to understand it.  Every time I explain it I get a different answer, and spend hours  trying to figure out where the calculation went wrong. And I have a cheat sheet in front of me!

We always joke at work on who's going to teach this, this week.  Everyone hates this course.  I think one of guys actually posted it on YouTube because they send us links "watch this, it's a great video", only to find out it course material.  Gotta love these guys...

  • alexcmom

@craig.. thank you! awesome videos and info on your page. just referred another mom to your bootcamp videos. The info on the ships is amazing. Loved reading them all. My son was on the Triton and I would love to get the challenge coins for both RTC and the Triton. Thanks so much for letting me know where I can purchase them.

  • Craig

My son was on the Triton too.  That's why I started with that coin 1st.  I figured if the company decides not to do them, at least I got my sons coin.  So far, they want me to continue to do them.  I just finished the USS Arizona because I have pulled into that port about 50 times and know the complete history.   The story is done.

I guarantee you don't know the entire history about the USS Arizona too.  Here it is:

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/pir09142012/forum/topics/uss-arizo...

  • DramaSoul

Craig...if you do design one for Ft. Sam, put me on the list.  The Kennedy coin is beautiful.  Pictures do not do it justice.  I love the weight of the coin as well.

I will tell you that at the graduation, when they take the Corpsman Pledge, it sent chills up and down my spine and, of course, made me cry!

  • Craig

Drama - Do you have a copy of the Corpsman Pledge?

What's weird for me is I am also thinking how I will design the coin for the Spec Ops guys in boot camp coin.  These guys want to wack the bad guys.  Then on here you have corpsmen willing to run into the beaten zone in battle to help the wounded enemy.  Both jobs need to be done but talking about opposite ends of the spectrum's... Geez...

So for the Spec Ops guys I might  have to do two coins, one for what the moms want, and one for what the sailor wants.   However, my main focus is what the sailor wants.  It's his coin.

Reminds me of when the Navy SEAL walks into a bar and says..."bartender give me a Bin-laden", the bartender says "whats that?".... two shots and a splash of water!.....hahahahahahhaahaaaa

    how flippen funny is that!!!!!.....

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hi Craig, the Corpsman Oath is in the discussion above "About the Hospital Corpsman rate."  This coin image paraphrases an element from the Oath that echoes the Hippocratic Oath...and since this is a group about A school, it seems appropriate to use as that's the first thing they'd better learn! :)   The flip side is also good, it commemorates the official founding date of the Hospital Corps (1898).

Just curious, but who/what are "spec ops guys in boot camp"?  Up to 80% of those who try don't make it through BUD/S alone; and training to become an elite special warfare operator takes up to a year.  I'm not sure they'd take kindly to a sailor recruit - or anyone who hasn't made the grade -  carrying a "Spec Ops" coin - and you don't want to mess with them!

Challenge coins are great keepsakes; the ones sailors really treasure are the ones that are earned, given to them in recognition of a special achievement - whole different deal. Or they receive from others in like kind as a token of friendship - they may exchange their own command coins when they visit another unit or meet sailors from other countries.  My corpsman in fact oversaw the coin design and manufacture for his last command.

I've seen some nice holders for coins, perhaps you have resources for those too for the folks here?

  • DramaSoul

Marcy, I am going to look into the HM coin.  Having the Oath on it (sorry, couldn't think of the word when I was writing about it...senior moment) is really really cool.

  • Craig

Marcy - Are you saying there is already a coin for "A" school HM's?  I really want one that say "Fort Sam Houston" on it.  I know there is normal HM coins, but I want something special on this time of the sailors life.  Just like RTC Great Lakes, they have a coin, but it just doesn't have the same impact as one that has "your" ship on it.   Beleive me, people pick up my coins all the time to look at them.  It's a story that never ends.  Expecially when you find someone else that has the same history.  Example "You were on the Triton in boot camp?"

Per the special ops guys.  All 800 division sailors contain Navy SPEC OPS, which includes SEAL's, Navy Divers, EOD, & Special Boat Operators.  They have a totally different physical requirement in boot camp. They enter under the Navy Challenge program:

    Navy_Challenge_Program.jpg

So to even pass that in boot camp is special.  The coin would be geared around them getting past that 1st stage, just like all the sailors.  Luckily? I work with a bunch of SEAL's.  Why? Because of those 80% that "ring-out", they end up becoming CT's.  We are the only group that go on missions with them, we just don't have the Budweiser.   If you ever notice, any SPEC OPS helicopter that is shot down has a CT aboard. It part of the job.

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/milpersman/1000/130...

It good when moms understand what these coins mean.  Most don't. To oversee the design and manufacture of a command coin is extra special.  Your sailor must have been one of the best of the best to do that.  They just don't let anyone have that type of responsibility.

I'm actually not part of what PIRGifts sells, thankfully.  I have enough trouble working full time, and running a depper website to worry about coins.  My job is simple, I just design them and write the story.  Then that company donates a portions of their profits to my website.  If you notice my website has no advertisements.  I don't want them since I deal with young people wanting to be sailors.  The last thing I want is them to get into debt.

Here is video of a Navy Nuke that accidently got put in the 800 SPEC OPS division in boot camp.  See if you can "Spot the Nuke"

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

    SMH.

  • navymom0612

I have started a collection of coins for my son. I would love to have one from Ft Sam. Craig you and I already messaged about a coin for Ship 13 at RTC. Hopefully there will be one of those someday soon.
I would love to find more resources for the coins and holders as well.
Thanks for all of your input.

  • mikes mom

I have to say regarding the coins... I never bought my son any coins, they have been given to him for his achievements... That's when it will truly matter to your sailors.. When it was given to my son it was from someone above him for something he did while he was in Afghanistan .. I am very proud...

  • DramaSoul

txbabydocmom....did you move to Corpus Christi? I almost ended up there when I was going to Sea World.  Fortunately my son realized I was going the wrong freeway and was able to get me back on track.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

NavyGirlzMom, this:  Kaplan EMT-Basic Exam Review

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

....just sayin' ... your sailors will want the coins they earn; their official command coins; and the ones they receive from others in exchange for their command coins.  Had lunch with three sailors and their command senior chief today, and they confirm.  Collecting is nice to be sure, but be aware this is how it works.

  • Craig

All - Trying to understand this.  So bear with me.  Just to clarify, when you say "Above all Else, Do no harm" you say this is the Hippocratic Oath the Doctors used to have to "swear in" upon receiving their doctorate.  What does this mean?  Are they saying Navy Doctors, all Military Doctors, All Doctors in the U.S., or all Doctors world wide?  How far does that saying go?  Anyone know?

Secondly, do the doctors (whomever they are above) get ticked that Hospital Corpsman use that saying?  Kind of like SEAL team members getting ticked if you use their saying?  Or does the doctors respect that the Hospital Corpsman are their "right hand men/women"?

txbaby - So are you guys staying in San Antonio, or will you be moving to Corpus Chrisi?

mikes - One thing that is missing from every sailor’s “shadow box” when they retire is a challenge coin from boot camp. Being a new sailor, you cannot earn a Challenge coin in boot camp.  No CO will "coin" you.

So to me, its the parents responsibility to honor their sailor.  It's a way of showing that you totally honor their achievement as they begin their life.

Believe me, it is an honor to be given a coin, as said, it is awarded for achievement.  A given or awarded coin is of  more personal value than a purchased coin.  But remember, the sailor isn't purchasing it, it's the family that does, so it is given.

I "coined" my own son with a  CT challenge coin I received when I earned my rating back in 1978.  Back then the Navy threw money at coins all the time, now they don't.   I had it engraved with my sons name and the date I gave it to my son.  A couple years later, my nephew became a CT.  My son, then had his name engraved and the date it was given to him.  This coin is now on this 4th passdown.  My other nephew is now the "Keeper of the Coin".

We have now run out of room on the coin for more engraving, so the next CT in my family will have to have the edging engraved.  When I see my nephew, the 1st thing I say is "Where's the coin".  He always has it on him.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

And please I'm not saying it's not great what you're doing with the coins to save as keepsakes if you like.  But here in these groups we really do try to pass on what we know, so we can be informed and keep up with our sailors.  it's a journey......

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Craig, the maxim"primum non nocere" or "first, do no harm" is a fundamental concept taught to medical students and applied by EMS worldwide.  It is a reminder that a provider must always weigh the risks versus the benefits of intervention.

No one is "ticked" at the universal application of this basic principle by medical care providers in all fields.

So many examples come to mind.  For instance, the five "rights" of medical administration could be said to derive from this principle.  Before administering, be sure you "first, do no harm" by answering the five "rights" correctly:  right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, right time.

  • Craig

Sorry about that Marcy - I totally agree.  There is a challenge coin section here on N4M's.  I got this off topic because I was just trying to figure out the medical meaning of the picture.  It's a hospital corpsman thing and I wanted to figure out what the medical stuff means.

Navygirlz - I just sent you a pm with the info you wanted....

  • Teach

Navy- when my son first saw his orders at about this point in BC, he thought the same thing. I believe they are reading the date classes start, although they never do on that date. At least, that's what it was for him. They ship them out of GL as quickly as possible to make room for the next group. He found out his travel plans after BS the last week of BC.
  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Where can you buy these coins. I don't remember seeing these when my son graduated in April of last year.
  • DramaSoul

I agree with Teach.  My son's birthday was on a Sunday, two days after he graduated from BC.  I ASS-UMED he wouldn't fly out until Monday and we would be able to celebrate his birthday with him.  NEWSFLASH...the Navy doesn't care if we celebrate his birthday with him! He was shipped out the next day (albeit after a 12 hour wait at O'Hare) and went to SA where he had a 4 week wait to class up.  Oh, and they aren't just sitting around on Liberty for those 4 weeks! SmileyCentral.comSmileyCentral.comAnd if I could find an emoticon that shows them cleaning and standing watch, I would put them up!

  • DramaSoul

txbabydocmom....Good luck with the move and the job change.  On a selfish note...how will we get first hand info on what's goin' on at Ft. Sam???

  • mikes mom

Its never easy when you finally realize the Navy Owns your child... That was always hard for me each and every time .. twice with Navy and once with Army..

  • 1proudmom

Couple of questions....Does anyone know if the sailors are recognized for  making the Deans list? and if so....how? Also...What is their title after they graduate?

Another question.... my son will be coming home for about 1 & 1/2 weeks  before reporting to duty station in Pensacola. Does Navy only pay for his flight to Fla. and he pays the difference of cost of flight to Pensacola and flight to Mass.? Does he  then buy his own ticket down to Pensacola when he gets home? When do they get all this flight info.?

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Ok here is what I know. They get their ticket around 3 days before graduation. They pay the difference for the "stop over" or change in the ticket. Also have him get in touch with the recruiter 3 days before he leaves school to see if he can "work off" his leave. If he puts in time at the recruiting office he can get credit towards his leave. Craig knows what it is called.
  • Katze90210 (3/113)

By the way my son grads A School 8/21 and he got his welcome packet last week with info but not flight info. He will probably get flight info in Friday. And get ticket changed then
  • cindylou61

My son graduates tomorrow (soooo proud of him) but has not received his tickets yet.  He's hoping to today; he too plans to come home, Salt Lake in route to Camp P, for two weeks.  He said that the class his buddy was in that graduated 2 weeks ago were delayed a couple of days after graduation before they were released.  Praying this isn't the case with his class.  Can't wait to see him and sad I couldn't go to graduation.

  • cindylou61

Oh and the recruiter program is called RAP...great deal and he hopes to get 5 days leave back working for them.

  • Katze90210 (3/113)

My son said they had to be out by a certain time. If their plane leaves after that time, they have to find a hotel and stay there until their flight. They have to put the money out and will get reimbursed when they get to to their new assignment. Don't know if this is true or not. Hope his flight leaves right away. Can't wait to see him !
  • 1proudmom

Katze & Cindylou.....thank you for that info. and Congratulations to both you and your sons. Thats very exciting. Cant wait for our day. It cant come soon enough!

  • DramaSoul

My son got his ticket at the admin briefing after graduation. Also he had a good time doing RAP duty.
  • Katze90210 (3/113)

Hey anyone know if there is a Fort Sam Houston Challenge coin? While my son may not have been honored with receiving a coin from higher ranking Officers or even  "Coined", I feel if I get him these coins to put in a display case, they would be nice to have as reminders of things he has done, seen or achieved and they will be kept at home waiting for him!

  • OKCsuzieq

My son is in 170 and picked orders today and got AVT c school Pensacola, FL. So, I don't have to go through all the posts would someone mind helping me with AVT C school and what that means?

DaniHMSchool Mom what did your son get?  I think they are in the same class and would luv to find out if they know each other.  Are you going to Graduation and if you are I would luv to meet you!

Thanks everyone! and I luv the emoticons!!!

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Thx so much Txbabydocmom. That makes sense, they should be earned. They mean something. Special. Maria
