He will meet people in his class and they will form a study group, everyone does. EMT training, the first part, is the hardest and he will have to do ALOT of studying. They have a test on each chapter, but there are two test that are considered the hardest, one is called the Corpsman Killer, they will have this one and two others their last few weeks of EMT. I don't know percentages of fail's, but my son said that there is always a few that will get sent back a week. If they fail a test they are given another try, and I think he said you can only fail twice before you are sent back. After EMT it is a breeze for them (considering what they just went through), but they will still have test on things they are learning.

Can someone on here please tell me what airport your kids flew out of when they left boot camp and went to Texas A School?

  • LisaS corpsman mom

My son flew out of Midway in Chicago when he left bootcamp to attend A school.
  • Momof2NavyFemales

My daughter flew out of Midway Airport when she left for San Antonio for A-School.

  • Rosemary

My son flew out of O'hare ,last Saturday for San Antonio .
  • Momof2NavyFemales

My daughter just texted that she passed her most recent test. Her classes started Wednesday and I think this was their second test. (?)

She is so excited! She posted on her FB for some of those she graduated boot camp with who haven't started classes yet that they really need to study hard!

  • GR8RABsMom

Hello, Fellow HM Moms.  I haven't been on here much since my Sailor's PIR and move to San Antonio.  It's so nice to hear from him and hear how much more comfortable he is than when he was in Boot Camp.  His classes won't start until next Wednesday, but I just ordered the Anatomy flash cards, coloring book, and EMT basic book for him so that he can start his studies.  It's so HOT in Texas that he feels like he's going to melt.  It's frustrating trying to get a decent phone connection, too.  I'm so excited that he's finally getting to his studies . . . I hope that you are all doing well and adjusting well.  I hope to get to know you all better over the next few weeks.

Does anyone currently have a Sailor in the Navy Basic HC A program class #150 and know their graduation date?  When are they done with the EMT program?  Please help, thank you, best wishes to all, m.

  • MintAustin

Hi guys! My husband will soon be heading out to San Antonio. I have a question about the anatomy flash cards, coloring book and anything else that is needed to help him. Is there a specific one that needs to be bought? I want to help him out as much as I can. :)

  • DramaSoul

MintAustin....My son said the flash cards were helpful for the Nursing portion of the training.  He wasn't into the coloring book but others have been.  Some moms have mentioned the EMT book.  We didn't have it when my son went through A school.  I think since the EMT part of the program is the most difficult and the first part of their training, it seems like it would be a good choice.  Any other moms find that to be true?

  • MintAustin

Thank you DramaSoul! I'll get the stuff and give it to him next month. I know he took some EMT courses, so I'll have to find that book.

  • louielou

Hello all,  I personally wouldn't go spend money on an EMT book as they are going to be issued one, that is used by most EMT college courses, called Emergency Care. they can ask around and probably get a book from another who is done using it so they can get ahead, my son did this and so he was able to read the first couple of chapters before they even classed up. The books get tossed unfortunatly when done. I bought my son the anatomy flash cards and that was it. He relied on his study group and the practice mod's online.

Marika, I would suggest reading the above links to get your answers, you will get them faster and will probably answer other questions you have. You can go to the facebook page Basic Medical Technican Corpsman Program and they will list the graduation date there when it is ready to be released, another then that your sailor is going to be the only one with that information. I suggest you try talking to him.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I think that several chapters in this review book (Anatomy and Physiology, Airway, and Trauma Emergencies) are a great way to get familiar with much of the terminology and material that will be covered; it's available on Amazon: EMT-Basic Exam Review

  • Rhody Navy Mom

Due to a significant death in our family, my sailor came home on emergency leave last week for a week; he has now been rolled back into Class 130 (was in class 120).  Does anyone know the date of graduation for Class 130 so I can rebook my flight and hotel?? Thank you!

  • Orange orchids

I am planning a trip to Texas soon and I'm packing a bag for my sailor, are there any ABSOLUTELY pack and DO NOT pack items for Sailors in A school? I have a general idea of basics but any advice would help! thanks!

  • Mia the US Navy wife

Does anyone have a Sailor in class 150 with AF and know their graduation date?  Thank you, best wishes to all!!!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Orange orchids - How exciting for you!  What is your sailor asking for?  All I can offer is - keep in mind that at the end of A school, sailors have to haul everything to their next duty stations in their already-jammed seabags, so it's best to limit what you give them, otherwise they end up having to box up and ship stuff home.  Hope that helps!  (Cookies and brownies to share don't present that problem fortunately LOL)

Regarding graduation schedule - unfortunately the new one hasn't been posted yet by BMTCP on their Facebook page.  Here's the link, keep checking it...BMTCP on FB.

  • Orange orchids

Thanks! Yeah he's not asking for anything but me, lol. But that's because he is two weeks from PIR and ready to see me.... Lol. I had already planned the baked goods even though he's been super impressed with the food so far. I'm just going to bring some clothes for him and get him some groceries when I get there. :)
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Would love your feedback on where you stay, restaurants, graduation, all that good stuff :)

  • Orange orchids

Well, I'm doing a weird kind of trip, lol but I'll give a full report when I get back. I'm visiting my best friend in El Paso who just had her first baby! and yes, you better believe I'm driving 7 hours to see my sailor in SA. lol. So I'll let everyone know how it goes. =]

  • louielou

Bring baked goodies for sure, from what my sailor and his friends have said, the food there is not as good as BC.

Marcy, Is there any other place we can find the graduation schedule? They haven't posted an updated one in a while, and we have moms on our fb page who are frantic because they are getting mixed dates from their Sailors.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Louielou, I'm trying my very best to get the new schedule, will keep you updated!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I called and word is being passed along to post the dang schedule, let's hope it gets up ASAP :)

  • louielou

    Hi Mom in the OC,

Oh yes The Corpsman Killer is their biggest, most stressful test. Tell him to not over-think his answers though, that is what really gets them. They do have another kinda big test after that one with two more smaller ones finishing out their EMT portion all in one week. Don't worry, I'm sure he will do fine. Once EMT is over, he will feel like the rest is a cake walk.

  • louielou

    Thank You Marcy!

  • Momof2NavyFemales

Mom in the O. C. - My daughter is also in class #170. Thank you for asking that question because I was wondering myself!

Typical of LHDs, USS Iwo Jima has about two dozen corpsmen assigned to her as part of the 1,000+ enlisted crew.  This Cox Video Diary about the Iwo's homecoming last December is a beautiful tribute to our sailors and their loved ones, especially one mom and her sailor  :)

  • Bobbo

Marcy, I feel like such a fool. I just found your message to me about this board on Corpsman Moms you sent me back on June 20th. I wish I had seen it then. Now I know where all the info was!

I feel like the guy who comes into the party just as the clean-up crew begins their work. However my son is at METC until next week.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Bobbo, better late than never!  Welcome!!  :)

  • Bobbo

    Excellent video. Thanks.

  • Bobbo

I don't know how to answer Alex's Mom other than this way.

I definitely understand your dilemma. My son is the most hard-headed 'thing' I have ever seen. I think its the Korean in him. Can't be from my side. ;-)

Anyway, you are in my prayers. At least you know where he is (Navy, San Diego) and that his options are limited to the downside. It seems our sons are going through a separation phase AGAIN. He will come back. Just let him run (as fisherman say).

I am confused though. How did he become a Corpsman if he just graduated Boot Camp in June? METC takes more than 3 months once you get in and very few get in right away.

Do you mean that your Sailor is in A-school in San Diego??

  • Bobbo

Sorry to be ambiguous. I mean since she sent out a message to all members, I didn't know any other way to answer Alex's Mom except through this webpage's comment wall.

  • Cynthia

My daughter graduates from basic training next week and will go to San Antonio for hospital corpsman A school
  • Bobbo

Congratulations to your daughter, Cynthia. It is a tough school but from what I was told by my son and others, mostly it is studying outside of class. Nothing that they/she can't handle.

  • Alex's Mom

I posted the question to all to see if anyone has some answers for me.  I am not sure how my son can be in San Diego direct from bootcamp as I do not think there is Corpsman A school in San Diego.  I am just trying to figure out where he is, San Diego or San Antonio. He posted a pic on Facebook saying San Diego and perhaps it is not true.  Hoping to figure out where he truly is.

  • kathy

Alex's mom YES. He can be there part of schooling is there as well as SA
  • DramaSoul

As far as I know the only A school for Corpsman is in San Antonio.  There is FMTB training after A school at Camp Pendleton (West Coast) or Camp Lejeune (East Coast).

  • DramaSoul

BTW, my son is a Corpsman and has completed FMTB.

  • kathy

There are some C schools in San Diego
The A school is in SA and it last 3 months once it starts
If he just got out of bootcamp he may have lost his A school
My daughter is also a corpsman.
  • Alex's Mom

Not sure if I am commenting correctly on this site, but what do you mean by "lost" his A school?

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Alex's Mom - Hospital Corps School ("A" School) is in San Antonio only.  The others are correct - not enough time has passed since he left bootcamp for him to have completed A school.

It's possible for a recruit to be offered the chance to choose another rating other than what they enlisted for while in boot camp, so your son could have accepted and be in the Navy in San Diego, but in another capacity.  Another possibility is not having been honest about alcohol-related issues or DUI.  No waivers are issued for those and they will prevent one from going to Hospital Corps School.  Your son's recruiting office may be able to shed light on what's going on, and that's who I would be talking to.  I sincerely wish you the best and that things work out between you soon.

  • Alex's Mom

I know he graduated recruit unit leader in bootcamp so I am thinking he may have switched to another capacity but the caption under the group photo he posted on Facebook said "Wanna be a Corpsman" so I am confused.  Also, he may have put San Diego on his facebook but really is in San Antonio.  Ahh, the torture.  He graduated bootcamp June 14 so wondering if there is a way I can find out where he is.  His recruiter said my son asked him not to tell me anything and so he is not.
