Sailors becoming Hospital Corpsmen at A School in San Antonio, TX - best rating in the Navy! The Hospital Corps is the Navy's only enlisted Corps and the most decorated in the Navy. Families, friends and loved ones, join in!
My son's PIR was 10/18. He flew out of Chicago Midway airport to San Antonio and his flight time was 5:20 am. I think he had to be at the airport at about 12:30am and we met him up there shortly after that.
My daughter is leaving from midway Sunday (12:30 am - on bus and flight leaves at 7:00. She didn't know which airport until thurs before PIR . We flew into O'Hair and some if the HM are leaving from there too. Sarge is helping us get to midway , will stow our luggage the take us back to O'Hair . Wonderful guy! Good luck you've got a 50/50 chance :)
To be honest.....all of your Navy experiences will be unexpected and last minute. Whether it is your SR's flight from bootcamp or his/her A school graduation or leave time - you have to learn to be flexible and roll with it. We now have two in the Navy and it has taught us an exorbitant amount of flexibility. I like to know what's going to happen so I can "plan." Rarely do I get this privilege with the Navy. But, it's ALL GOOD! Congrats to all your new sailors! It is a rewarding experience!
Just wanted to second Smile09's comment, Everyone's situation will be different. You have to learn to be very flexible and not get your expectations up, just because someone had it happen for them, doesn't mean it will be the same for yours.
My son left from BC from Midway, they will leave from either of the two airports and NONE of them will know which one until the day (if your lucky a few days) before graduation, mine knew his airport, but not his flight info until the day of graduation. My suggestion is to just plan your flight as late as you possibly can on Sat or Sun so you can have some extra time with them. Also, most fly out on Saturday, but there are some that don't go until Sunday, this is due to having enough available flights for them.
As far as holiday leave, they can not put in a "req. for leave" chit until they get to SA unfortunately, and if they aren't getting there until sometime in December, their chances will be slimmer as to the request being approved in time. It does take time for approval's to go through. They will be told when they get there, during their week filled of briefing's, if they can put in a chit or not. If you can buy a ticket that can be used later, that is a great safeguard.
Best of luck to all. My son was in BC last year at Christmas so I know the feeling, but lucky for us he is stationed at his home port, so I will going home for Christmas. :)
As everyone says be flexible or you will go crazy. It has been 2 years this past April since our son was in BC. It gets better and better as the time goes by. He was in the first corpsman class being held in San Antonio . One day he was leaving on Saturday then Sunday, we decided to return late Sunday and it worked out. He did not leave GL until the wee hours of Monday . Best of luck to everyone
If he does get in to the physical therapy tech program or any other C school that is lined than 20 weeks you are allowed to move. You will most likely not know his orders for after A school til a month before he graduates.
And keep money in mind. It will be difficult to get reimbursed for your move. Fort Sam is an Army base, so their move office knows all of the Army's moving procedures. The school house does NOT set up dity moves like that. They sui have DLA and travel assistance. We had to go to the school house to get a signature for our dity move and they had NO idea what we were talking about.
We ended up paying for me to move to SA for C school and Did a reimbursed dity move from SA to Virginia. Luckily, it wasn't too expensive to move to SA in the first place.
First of all, I would just like to point out that not everyone gets a C school. If you move during A school and he does not get a C school the Navy will NOT pay for you to move to his next duty station. You cannot fool the system, they require tons of paperwork to be turned in from a move. They will know where you moved from.
Secondly, in my personal opinion I would not move there during A school. They are so busy with PT, school, duty, making new friends and there are so many rules that I just don't think its worth it. He would only be allowed to spend the weekends with your family once he reached phase 3, which is 3 to 4 weeks after arrival. And they do have evenings off but they must be in the dorms by 10 p.m. and they are not allowed to have cars in A school so you would be picking him up at 5 p.m. and shuttling him back before curfew. If he does not do well academically they are required to attend study hall after school, so that would affect your time with him as well. Just some things for you to think about.
My husband checked in to his C school two days after graduating A school. He was not allowed any leave in between. But it doesn't always work out that way. Most people in the Navy have different experiences.
You can do whatever you want and move if you really want too. The Navy can't stop you. But it will get very expensive and what happens if he doesnt get a C school? You would move to Texas for 14 weeks to just pack everything up and move again?
Unless something has recently changed, your ASVAB scores do not matter for C school. And all HM contracts (aside from the new FMF ones) are strictly just HM A school is guaranteed. My husband scored a 90 on the ASVAB and was not guaranteed a C school. We did not know he was getting a C school until about a month before A school graduation.
Has your husband signed into DEP yet? It sounds like he hasn't even taken the ASVAB. Which means he hasn't done the physical or met with a detailer. Take a deep breath and don't get ahead of yourself.
Like I said before, unless something has changed recently they do NOT guarantee a C school in your original contract. I'm not sure where you are getting that information from. Also, at this point he isn't even guaranteed to get a contract as a Corpsman. I would have him pick 5 jobs he is willing to do in the Navy. My husband got lucky thr day he met with a detailer at MEPS there was a corpsman contract available. Also know that most people who sign a contract now will wait 6 months to a year before leaving for boot camp.
Also, I have heard that they are making anyone with more than 2 children get a waiver before they will let them sign a contract. That can add time to your wait as well. Has the recruiter mentioned that?
My husband had to go to MEPs 5 or 6 times over a 5 month period to even be offered a contract. He had an awesome asvab score, excellent physical and no special waivers were needed. It can just take lots of time to get a contract.
My daughter arrived in San An on Nov 9th and is waiting to class up. She told me she was picking a few differnet C schools but no guarantee she will get any of them. I don't think you are able to pre-choose your job rate prior to corpsman A school. I know my daughter wasn't even given that as an option. She is hoping for FMSS, but she won't know until closer to graduation.
Your ASVAB score has nothing to do with whether or not you get a C school. You get a C school based off of your grades in your A school class and if there are C school slots available. I don't think your husband can get a C school put into his enlistment contractm I have never heard of that before.
Of course besides Dental and FMF... those are the only exceptions I know of.
my son also has no idea what he will be doing after A school heard a rumor most male sailors go to FTMB. He only had to wait 3 months to leave after signing his contract. Does anyone know why it says 19 weeks on his orders? Still confused on that part.
Britt and Maria are correct. C school is based on your grades in A school. No one is guaranteed a particular C school. Some schools aren't even offered when C schools are picked. Depends on billets, needs coming up at different medical bases/facilities both at home and abroad.
My son signed his contract in jan. He was still in HS. Left for bc in august is at a school (corpsman) then he goes in to san dieg for fleet marine training. That is all in his contract. He know he has to do well in All of his classes.
ok thanks maybe he did decide to do fleet marine training in advance, I wasnt sure that was an option I thought the Navy decided for you depending on billets and how you did in class
There are contracts that are specifically for an FMF corpsman where they are guaranteed to go to FMTB training after A school. I believe they started doing contracts like this a year ago.
There are also contracts for dental assistant C school after A school.
These are the only two instances I know of being guaranteed training/schooling after A school when you sign your original enlistment contract.
Now, with all that being said.... if there are FMF/FMTB slots open the Navy will fill them. So just because your sailor doesn't sign their original contract to be an FMF corpsman does not mean they won't be given the opportunity to go to that training. Everything is "the needs of the navy". Everything depends on what the Navy needs when your sailor is given orders. They may or may not be given the opportunity tobattend more school or training.
Britt is absolutely right in what she is saying, They DO NOT sign their contract with a specific Corpsmen job/C School as this can not be guaranteed. There is no guarantee that they will make it through BC, or A School or even have good grades in A School, and C School is much harder. They also can not guarantee that a C School slot will be open at the time they pick or at graduation, and sometimes what they are given "soft orders" are changed when their "final orders" are issued. There are very few C School slots that are open to each graduating class and most Corpsmen are sent to FMTB or to a Naval Hospital and a few overseas.
As she said about less then a year ago they did start putting FMF into contracts, although the only ones I have heard of are for Reservist. Recruiters give false information all the time, mostly to get you to sign. I have even heard of recruiters telling Corpsmen their A School is in Great Lakes, which hasn't been the case for many years.
As far as moving to SA, I would also not advise doing that during A School, you are just adding an extra expense that may be unnecessary. Yes after he gets to Phase 3 you will be able to spend weekends together, but that would be the extent of it.
Good Luck and be patient as this will be a long adventure.
Btw, signing FMF into a contract is also not a guarantee really, it just means that after A School you will go to FMTB (which is not FMF I might add), and if they make it through that they are assigned to a Fleet Marine Unit. To be an FMF Corpsmen they have more training, be deployed with that unit and go through very intense Marine training (different then FMTB) and take several tests, and have recommendations from several top Marine and Naval Officers.
Loielou- that is absolutely right about FMTB and not a guarantee of being an FMF Corpsman. I didn't want to go in to that whole explanation. You gave a great brief overview of what it entails though.
What I have learned as a Navy wife is that things are changed 50 times and writtenin mud. I dont believe anything now until its happening. We are supposed to be going home for Christmas for leave. I won't believe it until we are in the car and headed towards Cali ;-)
Need prayers for healing. My son called and he had to leave
Clinical today because he is sick. He graduates Friday and if
He misses tomorrow he will get rolled back. He has what sounds like the
Flu. Please pray for him to get better.
One thing I Learned while I was in the navy you have to go with the flow they will decide what and where you are needed. Planning sometimes is not optional we can only do our best hard for us type A people!!
Thanks for the prayers, he was much better yesterday and on track for A school graduation Friday. I am leaving Chicago tonight to go see him and drive back with him and his car before he goes to Camp Lejeune for FMTB.
I think the thing I learned the most with these first two years is that nothing is etched in stone when it comes to the Navy! For those of us planners, it is a tough lesson. The only constant is change! Have safe travels and enjoy the graduation!!!
We are planning to spend thanksgiving in San Antonio next week with our son. He is in phase 3 right now. Does anyone know if parents & siblings can go inside the base? Is it possible to even go inside and see his dorm/recreation area? Thanks.
Raqi'smom - Every adult with a driver's license and any child in the same car can enter the base for visits. :) You can't go inside the rec or berthing areas (his room), but you can go most other places. There is a bowling alley on base and just about everything else you can imagine within 10 miles of the base. Have a great trip!
Attended class 215 graduation on. Friday. It was a blessing to see my sailor graduate with the rest of his class. We then drove back to Illinois. Nice time spent driving and talking. He will be going to Camp Lejeune after Thanksgiving.
Navywife+3... Sometimes you can get a C-school guaranteed in your contract, it depends if there is a need in that specific school and you can choose to do that job when you sign your contract. For the most part, everyone leaves with out a guaranteed spot for C-school. Usually if they have something specific, it's for reservist also. That greatly depends on where you will be when you finish Basic and school. I know a few other reservist were able to request C-school and it's in their contract that they will go for that after A-school. I wasn't able to pick a specific job, at this time there wasn't something specific they needed for Corpsman in the unit I will be going to after training.
I think your husband might be misunderstanding what the Recruiter is saying. However, if the Recruiter is telling your husband he can promise him a spot for Physical Therapy, he needs to make sure the Recruiter puts that on his package he will take to MEPS. Usually, the job you pick at MEPS will be a general job and you can put in for C-school when you are in A-school.
The recruiter cannot guarantee you anything. My understanding of it is that recruiters don't really know what jobs are available until the day of. Its mostly just chance.
The only instances I have heard of a C school being in a contract is Dental C school. Anf FMF (but that's not really a C school).
If I were you l, I would go talk tonthe recruiter with your husband the next time he goes. My husbands recruiter told him that his A school was in Chicago. I had to find out from this site that it had moved to San Antonio a year earlier. It was even in the info pamphlets he had received when he signed his contract at MEPS. It said A school was in Chicago.
He should also be looking at other jobs he would be interested in also. It is very hard to get Hospital Corpsman because that is a top pick for most joining the Navy. The day I finally got to pick my job and swear into the DEP there was a guy there that also wanted HM, he didn't get it because they didn't have any spots at the time. It's possible they have some more spots open before your husband goes, but you guys should know it is very possible he ends up in a completely different field.
Ashley is right.when my son was at meps a coup,e of years ago they only had 1 corpsman position available. I thought he was going into something with computers but when he got there they offered hi this rate. Things always work out for the best. He is now a surgical tech and loves the work
My son said he had a nice Thanksgiving, they had lunch (traditional Thanksgiving dinner) and he said it was good. Then him and a couple friends took a cab to the mall and the river walk, then had dinner at an Irish Pub (which they said had awesome food) and then went to see the movie Catching Fire. He said it was actually pretty fun, which made this mommy very happy. It was our first Thanksgiving apart.
He put in to come home for Christmas and he still is waiting on approval, I am praying they approve and he gets to come home!
What is your son doing in Italy? My son mentioned that he would love to be stationed there! I am happy he was able to come home for the holiday.
Hi ladies! I had thought my daughter was enroute to Guam...but I was wrong! She was on her way home!! I've had her home for almost 2 weeks! Now she will be headed to Guam(first duty station)... feeling sad but so thankful for this time! We celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas with her. A mini Christmas this week but still her favorite traditions and lots of special time!
Momof2sailors, my son is in Guam as a corpsman at his first duty station and had been there since this past April. In box me and we can see if mine can help show yours the rope. I also know another female corpsman there that my son went to A school with that I think the world of! There is also a Guam's group you can join.
Love the happy news rolling in! Guam will be a cool experience. JoeysMomma and Kat72, your sons' day sound like a lot of fun; it's so great how they are making good friends, and they'll be crossing paths for years to come. My son is stationed at the US Naval Hospital in Naples Italy and loves his work, the area and all the opportunities for travel, which he has been making the most of - all over Italy (Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, Capri), plus London, Paris, Edinburgh, Prague, to name a few :)
